Government Regulations and Internet RestrictionsAs the internet grows and more users become part of it the more restrictions we seem to have. The new user may never have the benefit of experiencing the internet as it was intended to be. There are many organizations that want to stop and restrict many usages that the internet provides the world with. Some of these organizations are controlled by the government which implies that our very own government wants to restrict our usage of the internet. Is it right for the own government wanting to limit something like the internet from its citizens. For many the internet is a form of privacy they have, and a way to have an opportunity of making something out of their life. The reasoning behind the government wanting to implement restrictions on the internet is a very controversial topic due to the fact that American citizens feel like it violets their rights. Too many making a policy that would limit what people can or can't do is considered unconstitutional. The reason being is that it would violate many things such as freedom of press and freedom speech, as well as right to privacy. "Many experts warn the 'Net' may fragment into &a |

The Life of Ha JinAuthors don't come up with unique and elaborate plot lines without any form of inspiration. Often times this inspiration comes from real life experiences and troubles. This couldn't be more true with Ha Jin, author of The Bridegroom and many other novels. The Bridegroom spans three short stories all with commentary by the author on social issues he underwent in China as well as in modern day America. Ha Jin's experiences as a youth in the People's Liberation Army and as well as a foreigner in America inspired his anthology of The Bridegroom. The first story in The Bridegroom is so appropriately called "Saboteur". The story depicts a newlywed couple, Chiu Maguang and his bride are enjoying a nice day at a train station after their honeymoon. A police officer throws tea at the couple, and Chiu is arrested after being verbally and physically assaulted. Chiu and his lawyer Fenjin are tortured while being held in prison for no crime. However, Chiu contracts his recurring acute |

The Glass Castle by Jeannette WallsWith the development of society, people are paying more attention to children protection (COLL). Government plays an important role in preventing children from abuse (COLL). A government agency, Children Protection Service (CPS) will perform an intervention if children are abused or neglected. The goal of CPS is to keep children with their parents if children are safe, and to take actions if children are at risk. However, the situations they come across are not always black and white, and they may face some dilemmatic cases sometimes. For example, her childhood experience that Jeannette Walls describes in her book, The Glass Castle, is a complicated case(adjective clause). Since their parents didn't shoulder the responsibility of raising them, Jeannette Walls and her sibling learned to take care of themselves. Always moving around, the family didn't have stable income, and sometimes they encountered starvation.(particip. phrase) Although the Walls children received good education from |

The Metal Oxide Semiconducter (MOS) TransistorHuman history can be divided into many distinct ages, including the Modern Age. The Modern Age is hallmarked by three industrial revolutions, the third synonymously known as the Digital Revolution, Information Age or quite simply the third industrial revolution. The origins of the Digital Revolution stem from the advent of the transistor, an electronically controlled switch. The transistor is arguably the most basic and essential component in any digital device. The Transistor was invented in 1948 by William Shockley. It was a bipolar transistor, a configuration that today is non-existent due to the subsequent advent of the MOS (Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor) transistor. The reason the MOS transistor surmounted the bipolar transistor was due to the fact that it was smaller, easier to build and improve, and generally simpler. The final compelling advantage that would lead to its adoption by Intel was that it was easier to put on integrated circuits, commonly referred to as microchips, it co |

On top of the ad is the text "Cannery Row/ Stay Here. Play Here." On the bottom is a dark blue box with the text reading: "When was the last time you had time to just watch your kids play? Come to think of it, when was the last time you joined them." The thesis for this advertisement is: Consume our product, or "Stay Here. Play Here." The purpose is to convince the audience to come to Cannery Row. The intended audience for this advertisement is mothers. The woman is smiling and happy, with her hair pulled up, and a cup of coffee in her hand. She looks relaxed. The image implies that Cannery Row is a place mothers can relax and enjoy time to them. Furthermore, this advertisement is aimed at the upper-class. The woman is not only |

The Greatest Yankee Captain - Derek JeterIt was July 9th, 2011, and fortunately, I was able to witness a small part of baseball history first hand. Derek Jeter had come up to bat in the 3rd inning while the N.Y. Yankees were facing the Tampa Bay Rays at Yankee stadium. He had gotten his 2,999th hit in the first inning. The crowd, of course were mostly on their feet. The count was 3-2, the pitch was a hanging curve ball by pitcher David Price and in return, Jeter crushed a home run into the left-center stands. With that being said, he became the 28th baseball player in history to reach 3,000 hits. A milestone, in which he is the first to achieve at Yankee stadium, old or new, as well as being the fourth youngest player to do so. This, along with a few other great achievements, guarantees his place in the Hall of Fame. His career statistics contend with those of baseball's all-time greatest players, as well as having five championship rings, with three of them being in a row. Overview of the Renaissance PeriodImagine moving to a different country after living in the same one for your entire life. The people are different, the language is different, and most of all, the culture is nothing like you've ever seen before. Around the mid 14th century, this feeling of massive change occured in Europe. From the collapse of the Roman Empire to 1350 CE, Europe went through a time known as, The Middle Ages where technological advances were exceedingly slow. During this time, the church held a firm grasp on society, causing many people to be illiterate. Although the majority of people were illiterate, the monks of the Catholic Church were some of the only people during this time to be granted with the gift of literacy. But at the start of the mid 14th century, Europe would never be the same again. What began is what we now call, The Renaissance. The renaissance was a time of rebirth, the attention of the European's slowly began to shift from the Church to man himself. Art, Creativity, and Humanism spro |

John F. Kennedy and Hope for BerlinIn the 1960s there was a lot of political stress between the United States and the Soviet Union. Due to the fear of the spread of communism around the world, John F. Kennedy delivered his "Hope for Berlin" speech in Berlin in 1963 to ease those fears. This was in response to the raising of the Berlin Wall dividing the city and the attempted spread of communism throughout Europe. In June of 1948 the Russians, who wanted Berlin, closed all the highways, railroads, and canals from west occupied Germany into western-occupied Berlin. They believed this would make it impossible for the citizens who lived there to get food or anything else they may need and would eventually be able to drive out Britain, France, and the United States. In response to this the U.S. and its allies delivered supplies and food from the air through air drops. These air drops carried more than 2.3 million tons of cargo into West Berlin, during the Berlin airlift an allied supply plane took off or landed eve |

Plurality of the Term CosmopolitanismAccording to A. Pollock, H. Bhabha et al. (2000), cosmopolitanism is not an easy term to define. Harvey (2009) contends that "cosmopolitanism has been reconstructed from a variety of standpoints as such, meanings have become complicated". Despite the difficulty to define the term, the basic ideal of cosmopolitanism dictates that every individual is a citizen of the world (Appiah,2006). Since the definition dictates that every human being is a citizen of the world, the fact that the term 'cosmopolitanism' is often used in a pluralised form is quite ambiguous. To this end, this paper draws upon from Malcomson (1998) and Robbins (1998) to discuss the pluralism of the term. The term cosmopolitanism is increasingly evoked in debates, be it economic, political, social or cultural. Initially founded by the Stoics (Malcomson,1998) and later revived by Kant, cosmopolitanism upholds ideas of responsibility, duty and concern for mankind, irrespective of one's own socioeconomic and political affiliations. However, scholars like Pollock et al. (2000) discredit the whole concept as being white, patriarchal and of catering for only upper class people. They (Pollock et al. 2000) a |

The Death of Ivan IlychIn this essay I will be explaining how the three standard forms of literary discourse, which we have studied in our class apply to the narration of The Death of Ivan Ilych, and allow for the transitioning between the dialogues of characters. This essay will cover excerpts of discourse from pages 39 and 82. These excerpts will enhance focus on the conversations between characters both minor and major by showing how Tolstoy uses these characters in order to transition from one form of discourse to the next. I will begin the essay with brief descriptions of the three forms of discourse, and then transition in to explanations as to how they pertain to the change in characters dialogue within the story. Discourse is the presentation of language in its entirety. Foucault gives what is possibly the best description of discourse that I could find as it pertains to our course. He says, "Systems of thoughts compromised of ideas, attitudes, and course of action, beliefs and practices that s |

New Deal Programs and the Great DepressionAfter the disastrous Great Depression struck in 1929, the country was in frantic need of a leader who would stabilize the economy and improve the declining situations of the U.S public. Elected in 1932, Democratic Presidential candidate Franklin D. Roosevelt was the answer to America's economic and social issues. Roosevelt had a concrete plan to end the spread of poverty and create opportunities for the unemployed and disadvantaged. His new policy, "New Deal" was founded on the ideas of recovery, reform and relief. With a supportive Democratic Congress, he was able to pass 15 major legislative acts in the first 100 days in office. Roosevelt's plans were unique in many ways, especially because they called for excessive government spending and involvement. Although Roosevelt's programs were in some cases controversial and unorthodox, he responded appropriately to the disaster. His programs proved to be relatively effective in accomplishing their goals of reviving the economy |

Islam and Negative StereotypesPrejudice of the Islamic faith is continuously growing as many Americans refrain from widening their education and understanding of the difference between the terrorists and perfectly humane members of the Muslim culture. Beginning with the terrorist attacks of 9/11, many Americans are quick to accuse all Muslims of terrorism, instead of picking out the people that acted on the reality of the matter. Many Muslims struggle to live in our country without constantly being judged by their visual appearance which is similar to the select men and women belonging to the Islam faith who are categorically labeled as terrorists. Unfair treatment of all Muslims is resulting in many of these men and women turning away from the Islamic faith because they are ashamed of the actions performed by those with similar visual representations, which have gradually been created as a standard for a present day terrorist. Muslims have been a part of the American society since they were first brought over |

Macbeth - Doomed to DownfallIn this tragedy, the reason for Macbeth's death seems to be because of the misleading predictions of the witches and pressure of Lady Macbeth. However, I think the main reasons for Macbeth's downfall and eventual death come from himself. He blindly followed his wife, he constantly alternated between his split nature, and his rationality was overthrown by his superstitious beliefs. Macbeth didn't analyze his wife's word and accepted all of it without any consideration. After Macbeth met the witches, although the witches said he will be king in the future, he never thought about killing king Duncan. When he spoke with his old friend, Banquo, he still felt loyal to King Duncan, (Act 1, Scene 3, Lines 128-158). After, he met King Duncan, he was really mad that King Duncan established his eldest son, Malcolm, as the prince of Cumberland, (Act 1, Scene 4, Lines 48-53). When he went back to castle and calmed down, in his mind, he still didn't want to do the evil thing, (Act 1, Scene 7, Lines |

Educational Functions and Reforms"The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education." Martin Luther King, Jr. There are many problems with the education system in America. As country's from around the world start to reform and rethink how they educate their youth to better suit the progression of science and technology in the world economies, the United States is falling sorely behind. With the global economy ramping up competition in almost every field it is more important than ever to prepare students for the future. The problem is that all students don't get an equal education as Malcom X argues, "When you live in a poor neighborhood, you are living in an area where you have to have poor schools. When you have poor schools, you have poor teachers. When you have poor teachers, you get a poor education. When you get a poor education, you are destined to be a poor man and a poor woman the rest of your l |

Historical Causes of WWIIHistorians are quoted as saying that although World War I was not inevitable; World War II was due to the unresolved tension between nations. Countries stopped trusting one another only sharpening existing rivalries. World War II officially began in September of 1939 when Britain and France declared war on Germany following its direct violation of the Munich Pact by invading Poland. While the outbreak of war was triggered by Germany's invasion of Poland, the causes of the world war are much more complicated. Due to unresolved anger with the Treaty of Versailles, the rise of dictatorship in Europe, and United States isolation countries around the world took part in history's bloodiest and most widespread war, World War II. The 1919 Treaty of Versailles was one of six treaties that ended World War I. Of the six treaties, the Treaty of Versailles was by far the most prominent. It was written by the Allied powers, including Britain, France, Italy, Japan and the United States, and Germany. |

Mining in MongoliaThough it has had a myriad of negative impacts on the environment, mining is a vital industry completely necessary to our economy and lives. Nearly every item we use in our day to day lives is mined or contains products that are mined. Without excavation and mining such materials things like computers, televisions, electricity, and cars would not be possible. Virtually every technological and medical advance uses minded materials, without which millions would suffer. Mining in Mongolia has boomed in the recent years, with the finding of deposits of gold, copper, coal, and iron ore. With the finding of these deposits and the mineral boom in Mongolia, the government has already planned to triple Mongolia's GDP. Although mining in Mongolia is effecting the environment in a negative way, mining is crucial in Mongolia's economy for many reasons. Mining has always been crucial in the economy of the world and in the everyday lives of people. Without mining technological items such as the com |

Fahrenheit 451 and A Raisin in the SunFiguring out who you are as a person is tough enough, let alone having to be a teenager in high school trying to figure out how to be themselves. Sometimes people can feel like they're drowning in the expectations they're held to. In Ray Bradbury's book Fahrenheit 451 and Lorraine Hansberry's play A Raisin in the sun, characters in each story go through some tough times figuring out who they truly are, with community and appreciating the little things characters figure out who they are. Community is a huge part in Bradbury and Hansberry's stories. Characters in both story lines use the community and people around them to help them discover who they truly are. Bradbury writes "And then, very slowly, as he walked, he titled his head back in the rain, for just a few moments, and opened his mouth" (21). This quote shows |

Black Slaves, Oppression and FreedomAfter China and India, the United States of America is the most populated country in the world. The world's census states that its population is over 319.000.000 people, 31% of which are "non-white people"; their president itself is black. In 1860 its population ranged around 31.500.000 people, 12.1% of which were represented by slaves. Why is it important to make a comparison between nowadays United States' population and 1860's ones? In fact, in April, 1861 started the American Civil War, which ended with more than 500.000 dead men. Due to the American Civil War, the whole world perceived the American investment in arms industry and the Industrial Revolution's advances. The war also meant the end of slavery in the United States of America. Although several authors, such as James McPherson, support that "the true issue was the morality and future of slavery" (187), the real reasons were due to economic motives. Other authors defend that "So far, slavery itself |

Courage and Tolerance in To Kill a MockingbirdSome ideas never get old and the truth is eternal. Atticus Finch is wise beyond his time. His words and ideas transcend his time period. This essay will argue that the words and ideas expressed by Atticus Finch are just as true today as when he spoke them and that they have much to teach today's adolescents about courage, tolerance and decency. Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird is seen through the eyes of perhaps the worst period of time in the United States, the Great Depression. The country was stricken with a massive economic downturn, which brought with it severe job loss, food shortage, and adverse feelings. Our current time period is similar in some ways but different in very many more ways. Today we are faced with difficult economic problems, but the social problems that affect my life as a young adult are quite different than those faced by Scout and Jem in the book. I doubt they were concerned with how many "likes" their Instagram picture got. The words of |

The Relationship Between Art and the ViewerIn many cases, contemporary art must turn to shock value to challenge and engage the audience in the modern world. It has become apparent that the impact made by art has lessened dramatically in recent times, as audiences become used to the traditional forms and features of art. The audience that the artist strives to challenge and engage in modern times, art critics, have become the media and the general population; this shift in audience from the traditional role of the critic, is caused by increased education levels, and the more widespread use of art in the media. The use of contrasting imagery, and of graphic depictions, as well as photographic techniques and the application of digital imaging or other special effects, are often used in creating shocking contemporary art. Some artists which use these techniques within their works include: Julie Rrap, as is seen in the work Overstepping (photograph mounted on lexcen, 2001), or in her Camouflage Series, in particular, Camouflage # 1 |

Mockingbirds in MaycombHate, poverty, violence and mockingbirds. All of these resided in the small town of Maycomb, Alabama during the 1930's. The mockingbird is a peaceful, beautiful, and innocent bird, it goes throughout its day singing and scavenging not causing anyone harm. Yet, it is still pursued by young children in the town. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee utilizes the innocence of the mockingbird and the turmoil in Maycomb to symbolize how the world's evil effects every one of our lives and the initial judgment, we pass on others; causing the unfair judgment and pursuit of innocent people, she uses Boo Radley, Tom Robinson, and Tim Johnson to do so. Boo Radley is overall an innocent and peaceful character. Yet he is ridiculed, bullied, and pursued by both adults and children of the town. He is pursued by Jem just as the mockingbird. Boo is Maycomb's most talked about mystery. Why such a mystery? Boo was rarely seen due to all of the town's hate towards him, though teeming with innocence he was |
