Structuralism in The Princess BrideHumans are a very interactive race and each person is part of at least one group, personal or public. Structuralism is the idea that everything that we do and know are determined and classified by structures, and it is used in psychology and literature to analyze the thought processes of people and interpret texts, respectively. It can be used to analyse the movie "The Princess Bride", although detractors may say that the structuralist lens cannot be used effectively, or even at all, to analyse this movie. This film is very popular throughout the world and is said to be among the greatest comedy films and love stories of all time. Though comedy plays a big role in "The Princess Bride" and true love advances the story, the main focus of this film is on the ideals of structuralism and talks specifically about heroes. There are two reasons for this: a pattern, specifically the hero cycle, is followed and is a significant element of the narrative and there are character |

Wind and Solar Power SystemsOn a national and global scale, humans have developed growing and life threatening addiction to energy in order to provide electricity and heat. As a potential solution, natural gas is highly abundant throughout the world and can help nations like the United States become less dependent on fossil fuels. Despite relentless talks of a global energy addiction, it seems that too few of actions are actually being taken toward weaning the world off of its fossil-fuel addictions. The questions involve how we interpret the term "energy crisis". Two essential questions are, Is the energy crisis really the environmental issue of safer and healthier means of mining and utilizing energy resources and how has energy crisis affected us now as well as has it been predicted to occur in the future at our global rate of resource consumption? The true energy crisis is that of an ecologically sane and stable means of obtaining sufficient energy without destroying our environment. The energy |

Research Paper - MemoryThe brain acts as a codebook for the human mind: regulating the essential functions of the human mind. Every brain displays unique and special characteristics. Having more than 100 billion neurons that form an estimate of 200 trillion interconnections, these variations initiate the way each brain thinks, learns, and behaves. The ability to learn from our past experiences allows a person to adapt to this complex world. Neuroscientists have attempted to unravel how the brain manages to make these vivid memories that replay through our mind as we continue to grow. A conclusion has been reached that our brain help us transform experiences into ideas and knowledge in a person's life. We all have vivid memories from our childhood, or a recent as yesterday, that still remain in our hearts and mind. Why is it that we can remember unnecessary things that torture our mind and forget those that are special and heartwarming? Memories serve as a guide of our past that helps a person through every p |

Concert Review - University Jazz EnsembleI had the wonderful opportunity to visit Pacific Lutheran University to attend their University Jazz Ensemble's final performance of the semester. The concert was Wednesday, April 22 at the Karen Hille Phillips Center which was a really nice venue, seating was great and everything was really easy to see and hear. PLU's Professor of Music and Director of JAzz studies, David Deacon-Joyner was directing the jazz ensemble with one performance being guest conducted by incoming Professor, Dr. Ron Gerhardstein. Overall the performance was very concise and very entertaining. Dr. Deacon-Joyner started the evening off with a tune called Hindi Gumbo by Fareed Haque, arr. Joe Duran. This is a song you just want to jam to and it almost doesn't even feel like a jazz song with the electric guitar riffs and funky bass line. It almost felt like Oprah was directing the show with all the solos be tossed in left and right |

Poetry Analysis - The White Man's BurdenRudyard Kipling, one of the most famous poets of the Victorian age, wrote The White Man's Burden in 1899, at 34 years of age. Kipling was born and raised in the English colony of Bombay, India, a place he later recalled in his memoirs: "My first impression is of daybreak, light and color and golden and purple fruits at the level of my shoulder" (Kipling qtd. in "The Poetry Foundation," 2014). As a white child, raised in one of England's far flung colonies, the young Kipling began to adopt a "Euro-centric" perspective of the world, in which Europe was seen as the seat of power and cultural superiority, while less advanced societies were labeled as poor and inferior. The term "white man's burden" came into existence during the Spanish-American war, and came to represent the magnanimous and charitable attitude of white society toward "less-civilized" cultures, which were seen as the economic burden of the white race ("History Matters |

Theme Essay - The Gift of the MagiThe Gift of the Magi By O. Henry takes place on Christmas Eve. Traditionally, one gives presents at this time of year, and Della and Jim want to buy something very special for each other. As they have little money, they both sacrifice their most valued possessions that ironically cannot be used. O. Henry calls these two "wise" rather than foolish for doing this, and uses the setting characters and events to develop his theme. The narrator calls attention almost immediately to the two most important details of the story's setting: it takes place on Christmas Eve, and its two main characters live in an unassuming flat. O. Henry sketches the flat with just enough detail to convey an image of its squalor: it's cheap, sparsely furnished, and has a broken mailbox and a broken doorbell. The couple, however, does not think of life this way. Della, is depicted a poor woman with few good garments, hardly getting by. Although, O. Henry makes you feel that Della is excited at each new |

All Marketers are Liars by Seth GodinMy job as a student is to persuade you that not only did I read "All Marketers are Liars" but am able to use the techniques the book was trying to teach us. In the next few paragraphs I am going to talk about what exactly I learned and how to tell a great story compared to an average story. After reading this paper you should not only be able to tell a great story but be able to make a great story that people are willing to hear and spread. So sit back and relax while I tell you what I learned. What's the point of telling a story right? They are all the same right? Why tell a story if the product is extremely good and people are going to buy it anyway. The point of telling a story is to convince you the buyer that their product is not only worth buying but it's a matter of norm. You thinking the product is good without actually using it or needing it is effective marketing. Ask yourself this, is a cell phone that's worth hundreds of dollars more really worth the extra coup |

America and the Revolutionary WarAmerican values, such and freedom and democracy, are hardwired into every American citizen. These values were created when British citizens sailed across the vast Atlantic looking for new opportunities such as religious freedom. From 1607 to 1763 these values of freedom and the right to do virtually what ever they wanted were left unchecked by the royal crown. This caused a sense of isolationism that grew on the Americans and once the British became checking these rights, a revolution occurred. The Revolutionary War was not a culmination of change in a span of 150 years, rather it was a struggle to conserve American values that were brought over with the colonies that existed up till 1763. In addition, the British were Revolutionary by asserting authority on a tradition of freedom. One can make the claim that America values were practiced without due interference by explaining several key events prior to 1763. The creation of colonies in the New World gave lower class citizens in Gre |

The Economic, Social and Political Progression of WomenNancy Pelosi once said "Women are leaders everywhere you look-from the CEO who runs a Fortune 500 company to the housewife who raises her children and heads her household. Our country was built by strong women, and we will continue to break down walls and defy stereotypes." As seen today, women have made significant advancements toward equality by being able to vote, holding the same job positions as men and being paid and treated equally in most aspects of life. These advancements are acknowledged as advancements because it fits the definition that they are acts or instances of moving ahead. Woman have strived to make advancements and in many cases they came out victors. Although women are still fighting for equality in some aspects today, their relentless fight most notably began in the early twentieth century and for several years thereafter, they won several battles. Since 1914, women have made impeccable advancements in political, social, and economic aspects in Canada a |

Behavioral, Cognitive and Constructivist Learning TheoriesWhile the world continues to grow and develop, education is becoming more and more important each year. With teaching, there is no exact answer to which way is most effective, every child learns differently. It is the teacher's job to investigate the ways their individual students learn and adjust their teachings accordingly. A learning theory is the framework that describes the way information is going to be absorbed, processed and then retained. Three different learning theories are Behavioral, Cognitive, and Constructivist (Koch 94). Behaviorism is the theory "that learning takes place in response to reinforcements from the outside environment," (Koch). With behaviorism, observable behavior is the main focus. This means behaviorists focus on the behaviors that can be seen, such as body language. They believe the nature of reward and punishment (stimuli) are factors that influence learning. Behaviorists see the role of memory as hardwiring of repeated experiences. Memory |

The Biology and Psychology of Drug AbuseWhen a person uses a psychoactive drug and the affects that drug has also depends on the person's expectations, the social setting, and cultural beliefs and value. Addiction is known to be a brain disease or disorder, which affects multiple brain functions, including those involved in sending signals for reward and motivation, learning and memory, and inhibitory control over behavior. Being that drug abuse and addiction have so many dimensions and disrupt, this is not so simple to treat. The biological theory holds that psychological disorders are caused by physiological malfunctions, for example, the nervous system or the endocrine glands often stemming from hereditary factors. The biological basis of behavior has research in the area has also contributed to our understanding of abnormal behavior. As stated "The advances in the field of behavior genetics have begun to identify specific genes that are involved in the development of complex disorders such as schizophrenia" (G |

Maintaining and Protecting Marine LifeProtecting marine mammals and other marine life is solely dependence on human efforts and conservation. Marine life is put in danger of humans every day and need rescuing to save them. In the United States there is a couple of laws that protects marine life, the Marine Mammal Act of 1972, The Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act, and the National Environmental Policy Act but this is only set in the United States. Anthropogenic effects are the ways humans interact in the world either good or bad. . Although we have laws and acts in this country to protect marine life, things like dumping, overfishing and disobeying boating safety for the environment is still going on. Then by advancing education and expanding the acts it can better protect marine life all over the world. Dumping hazardous waste in to the ocean has never help anything but keeping it out of sight, making it harder and worse for more things in the end. For some people a can of oil down the drain won't |

On the other hand some patients have experienced hell on earth due to the treatment they have undergone from Christians who preached sermons of doom to them. Research on the Stroop TaskAbstract This research investigated the underlying causes of interference in the Stroop task. The participants involved in this research were the 131 students of the PY1101 at James Cook University. They consisted of 90 females and 40 males with a mean age of 23.63 years, and unfortunately, one participant did not contribute to the result due to an unknown circumstance. The participants were given three tasks: word task, coloured block task and the Stroop task. Errors and the amount of time it took the participants to response for each task was recorded along with their gender and age. The overall results of this research supported the two hypotheses which are: the word task would be completed faster than the coloured blocks task and that the Stroop task would be done slower than the coloured blocks task. Once in a while, people encounter distractions or information that are difficult to ignore when attempting to focus on a specific task. Previous research has suggested that these dis |

Gothic Properties of Bram Stoker's DraculaThere are many Gothic properties in Bram Stoker's Dracula. These properties are created by a combination of the desolate settings, dysfunctional narrators, the supernatural occurrences, plus the sexual undertones. These techniques contribute to the success of the novel throughout its lifetime, Dracula being one of the few books in the world that has not been out of print since it was first published, and has become a cornerstone in the modern vampire legend. Dracula shows its Gothic settings by using techniques such as symbolism, personification and imagery to create a dreadful atmosphere. The ruined abbeys and the decrepit castles are symbols for the collapse of religion and aristocracy, being destroyed by scientific advances, a common theme in the time the book was written. The main setting in the novel, Castle Dracula is castle located in the most remote location possible, requiring a special carriage to visit, this creates an isolated setting, which adds to the already dreadful atmosphere created by the novel. Another key property which makes Dracula a Gothic novel is the supernatural elements that it contains. These elements are fundamental to the Gothic novel, even if the |

Science Research Lab - BiomassBiomass is organic material made from plants and animals. Biomass contains stored energy from the sun. Plants absorb the sun's energy in a process called photosynthesis. When biomass is burned, this stored energy is released as heat. Biomass is a renewable energy source because we can always grow more trees and crops, and waste will always exist. Many different kinds of biomass, such as woods chips, corn, and some types of garbage, are used to produce electricity. Some types of biomass can be converted into liquid fuels called biofuels that can power cars, trucks, and tractors. Leftover food products like vegetable oils and animal fats can create biodiesel, while corn, sugarcane, and other plants can be fermented to produce ethanol. The production and the use of biomass also bring additional environmental and social benefits. Some good reasons to use biomass as a sustainable fuel: correctly managed, biomass is a sustainable fuel that can offer a significant reduction in net carbon emis |

All the Small ThingsI am a firm believer that everyone should enjoy all the small things life has to offer. We often get lost in all the day to day routines. I am just as guilty. We wake up and rush through the early morning fog of waking up, getting coffee, getting dressed, waking up kids and spouses. We all go through it. Then once we have reached school or work, you rush through the day of trying to get everything done that has to be done by the time that bell rings or it's time to hit that time clock. But for me, when my little girl started preschool, it was a major eye opener. There I sat in my car in the parking lot, sobbing my eyes out. How did four years pass me by so quickly? That's when it hit me to stop everything. I had to take a moment to just recollect back over the years, when she walked, talked and even that time she ran through that backyard in only her socks, trying to catch a butterfly. I finally gathered myself enough to leave the parking lot and go on about my day. But that day has |

Liberated by the Love of Christ"For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes" (Rev. 7:17). It wasn't until I realized that Jesus' love brilliantly shone from within me that I could recognize that the horrors that defined my childhood did not need to continue defining my life as an adult. My journey has been heartbreaking and tumultuous, but in the end I was able-through God's help-to find a place of healing. This is not an overnight transition, but rather one that has taken me a lifetime and will continue to occupy the rest of my time on earth. My journey moves me forward, away from the mundane and into the realm of the extraordinary. And each new revelation brings more healing. The truth of God's love liberated my soul. After years of darkness and solitude, I began to hear Creation sing in the morning. I started to see the heavens as whimsically dancing to the choreography of God as he la |

The Chemical Decomposition of RocksWeathering in general refers to a group of processes by which surface rocks disintegrates in-situ into smaller particles or dissolve into water due to the impact of the atmosphere and hydrosphere. According to Waugh weathering is the first stage in denudation or wearing down of the landscape; it loosens material which can subsequently be transported by such agents of erosion as running water, ice, the sea and the wind. However it should be noted that no transportation of the weathered material (regolith) is involved. Weathering processes are often slow, taking hundreds to thousands of years. The amount of time that rocks and minerals have been exposed at the earth's surface will influence the degree to which they have weathered as well as the structure and mineral composition of the rocks, local climate and vegetation. Furthermore, decomposition and disintegration are interacting processes. For example, disintegration greatly promotes decomposition by reducing large intact rock ma |
