The Dangers of Social Media

I remember it like yesterday. I was waiting patiently for my father to come home from his office. He promised to bring me to the playland on that weekend. I had a lot of fun there. I still remembered the moment when I took the super roller-coaster. We also captured every moment when we ate chocolate ice cream, sipping the fresh air and watching the birds flew above the blue sky. Nature! Ever since the computers and the internet have become widely used in our society, most people have addicted to them.People prefer to spend their time on online games, rather than to play real outdoor games.I can say that social media have many benefits but every coin has its reversed side. There are actually dangers associated with social media such as exposing users to cyber crime, causing health problems and increasing relationship issues. First and foremost, the dangers of social media is exposing users to cyber crime.Cybercrime is an everyday problems that threatens business

Water Quality and Stream Ecology

Introduction Agriculture has great impacts on water quality. Water quality is important because organisms depend on it to survive. We were sampling the organisms living in a stream. It can give us a broader picture of the quality of the water in a long period of time. The water quality of any ecosystem cab is determined by looking at the chemical characteristics, the biological characteristics and physical characteristics (Kleski, 2004). The purpose of this project was to collect data from Dug Run situated in Lima, Ohio, behind the tennis courts of the University of Northwestern Ohio (UNOH). We collected data on 22nd of January, 2015. The goal of this research was to determine the water quality by observing the characteristics, chemistry and animals that live in Dug Run. Discussion During the time we were testing the stream, it clear, there was rainfall before and signs of erosion were seen in some parts of the stream. The width of the stream was 3 m, and the depth was 10.5 cm. The

Movie Analysis - The Black Stallion

The Black Stallion is a movie about a small boy and a black horse that communicate to an extreme level. The horse saved the boy's life when the cruise ship they were on sank. In doing so, the horse paddled its way to shore, and the boy held on. They were stranded on an island all alone, just the two of them. The movie The Black Stallion demonstrates a deep, dark, and sad mood through music, dialogue, and setting. Music plays a key role in the deep, dark, sadness of the movie. As the ship sank, the music started to rumble, and the beat was very low-toned. The music started to beat faster and faster, which as a viewer of the movie, made my heart beat faster as well. When Alec and the horse were stranded on the island, it started to rain and he looked very scared and sad. The music that is bei

American Citizens - Continuing to Harm the Environment

Everyday, Americans waste everything from time, fuel, food and money in every facet of their life. Every time they fail to car pool to work or school, throw away the last half of their cheeseburger or spend an extra five minutes in the shower they are wasting something. Every American has a daily routine they go through to get ready for the day, and this routine almost always involves water. Water is quite possibly the easiest to save yet most wasted resource in the every day life of the American citizen. Americans use water to shower, do the dishes, wash their clothes, wash their hands, dispose of waste and even water the lawn. There are many simple, easy and very cost-effective ways of saving water, most of which can be done while sticking to one area in the house: the bathroom. The largest household use of water can be attributed to the common household toilet. For the average American household, toilets contribute to a 28% of total water usage, and the possibility of an additional 5% of water being lost due to leaking toilets (Weinzierl 283). One of the simplest ways to lower water usage

Movie Summary - Gone With the Wind

Gone with the Wind, a 1939 American epic historical romance film, was adapted from Margaret Mitchell's Pulitzer-winning 1936 novel. It was produced by David O. Selznick of Selznick International Pictures and directed by Victor Fleming. Vivien Leigh gives a magnificent performance as a Georgia southern belle with a quick-tempered, selfish, yet determined personality through the character known as the protagonist, Scarlett O'Hara. Overall, Scarlett is viewed as a narcissistic and shallow spoiled brat, though her unceasing and determined need to survive is most respectable. Throughout the movie I often frowned upon the countless selfish acts she committed, such as kissing her friend's husband, marrying her sister's fiancé, and flirting with every man accounted for in town. Yet, when it comes to the things that matter most, she gives it her all demonstrating devout loyalty and hard work. She alone survives the terrors of the Civil War losing many friends, family members, and even he

Overcoming Global Conflicts

Doing business overseas is not as easy as it seems, there are a lot of different aspects in which we have to be careful to not offend someone or give off the wrong vibe. Some countries like the United States are always in hurry and rushing to get things done, while other countries take the time to make sure that they come to the right decision. In this paper I will be explaining how to overcome some obstacles that stand in the way of doing business overseas. In this paper I will be explaining how different locations mean different things, how to help gap the language barrier that might exist, and how to create and build a successful partnership with an overseas company. Foreign Barrier The hardest part about doing business in a foreign country is the cultural barriers that need to be overcome, ranging from the customs of the country to the language that they speak. If we are unable to breach the gap that separates us in these instances then we have no chance of creating a lasting rela

College and the Benefits of On-Campus Living

When applying to universities, there is always the big question; are you going to live on campus or live off campus? There are the people who already know whether they are going to live on or off campus and then there are the people who have no clue about which one they want. Living on campus has many benefits. One of the main benefits of living on campus is proximity to classes. You won't have to worry about relying on the bus or driving to campus and wasting time looking for parking. Better yet, if you don't have a car, you won't have to pay for parking at all! All you will have to do is walk or ride your bike to the right building. Who wouldn't want such an easy commute? Being able to get to and from classes more quickly means students living on campus can also devote more time to their coursework. Students who live on campus have easy access to tutors, libraries and the student union at almost a

Short Story - The Smell of Spaghetti

I was in my kitchen, age nine, year 1994. I was all arms, legs, and freckles. I had dark chocolate hair halfway down my back with ruler straight bangs to my eyebrows. I remember that if my pants fit me around the waist they were too short in the legs and if they were long enough in the legs I could have fit two of me in them. I cannot recall the time of year but it must have been autumn because it was the beginning of my second grade year and it was not yet snowing. As you walk into the kitchen, the washer and dryer were on the right side of you. Next to them there was a space for access to the basement door, but next to that space the cabinets and countertop began. I loved to stand between the counter and the dryer, push myself up with my hands, lift my feet, and swing. One this day my five year old cousin Chrissy, who looked just like me but in mini size, stood behind me and while in mid swing, she shoved me. I can still remember her little hands slamming into the middle of my ba

Economic Growth in Indonesia

Economic growth is one of the economic development aspects that emphasizes the growth of aggregate national income or output annually. It can be defined as the changing process in a country's economic conditions to improve and also to show an increase in the production capacity of physical goods and services within a certain time (Cornwall, 2014). The Indonesian government has had economic growth as their primary concern for many years because it is the important part for country development. The lack of external factors and internal factors such as competitiveness, inovation, and the quality of labor cause low economic growth. In research about real and monetary sectors, the position of Indonesian competitiveness is at a bad position, same with Cambodia and The Philiphines. Different with the position of China, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore which are good for both sectors(Firdausy, 2008). According to Ahmad (2014), low economic growth is not only caused by export and impor

Government and a Free Market System

Under a free market system, the task of achieving the most desired economic or social outcomes is relatively complex. Therefore, government intervention is required for an ethical and financial balance. Government becomes a crucial facet of running an efficient economy, as when it fails to do so, the disastrous result is market failure. Markets alone decide the demand and supply required for equilibrium. However, this is partially based on private economic interests failing to regard social factors. The main responsibility of the government during intervention includes reallocating resources, redistributing income, as well as stabilising the economy. Reallocation of resources is achieved for the purpose of directing resources for more desired outcomes of goods or services. This is an effective use of resources when they are scarce. With free markets, there is also a potential failure to provide necessary goods and services since they might not be provided by the private sector. Examples of these goods includes national defense, or street lighting. In addition, merit goods are sufficiently provided by t

Medicine and Death - Round 3 and Victory

A fever of 110 degrees just hit me like a speeding semi-truck, and my body wasn't ready for it. In 2010 my sudden and severe bacterial pneumonia attack, made me incredibly grateful for modern medicine. Little did I know that I would be face-to-face with death. I was putting away groceries when suddenly I started shaking like a leaf, and I couldn't stop. My mom checked my temperature; I had a high fever. I went straight to bed, and not even my electric blanket, heater, or our wood stove could warm me up. When I woke up the next day, my kidneys had started to shut down; therefore, I had an uncomfortable pain in my lower back. It felt like my lower back was really sore, like after a large workout, but I hadn't worked out before. By this point, my fever had settled so I wasn't shaking as much, but it was still high. Because of the back pain, my mom took me to Skyline Hospital in White Salmon, but the doctors couldn't figure out what was wrong with me. After they checked where the pain wa

Sacrificial Rituals in the Odyssey

Acts of sacrifice have been prevalent and reoccurring in practically every culture or religion around the globe, both in history and the current day. On an international level, some of the most ruthless of which have involved offerings of human life. Other cultures hold more limits on their brutality, yet are still considered significantly violent in today's terms, such as bloodletting. Often times, these sacrifices are as common as sparing a favorite food or recreation as Catholics do during the Lent season, this method perhaps more widespread as it provides a humaneness that several of other approaches lack. All of these practices, however, share a collective purpose in worshipping and honoring a higher being, in most cases, a god-like figure. In The Odyssey, Homer elucidates how abiding to the demands of Ancient Greek sacrificial rituals may grant approval by those gods, often engendering their assistance or support in life's excursions. Initially, a god's confirmation for a mortal may be solely based upon the quantity of contributions they have made to the immortal community. As Zeus clarifies his opinion of hero Odysseus to his daughter Athena, who is seeking his

OSHA 1926 Subpart X – Stairways and Ladders

OSHA 1926 subpart X applies to all ladders and stairways used in the alteration, construction, and repair of workplaces that are covered under 29 CFR 1926. The subpart also specifies circumstances under which ladders and stairways must be utilized (OSHA, n.d.). This part acts as a guide to construction companies on how to ensure the safety of their employees at construction sites. The subpart also serves to protect and uphold the safety of construction workers. The subpart gives the definitions, scope, application, and general requirements relevant to it. Application and Relevance of the Subpart The subpart has two general requirements. The first requirement is that the employer must provide a ladder or stairway at all employee access points where there is an elevation break of 48 centimeters and no runway, ramp, personnel hoist, or sloped embankment is provided. The ladder or stairway acts as a link between the two points. The subpart also gives several instructions under the firs

Long-Term Consequences of World War II

At the end of World War II the effects were everywhere. It affected every country, and every family in some way or form. Ukraine is one of the countries who had suffered the most from the war and the consequences of it. From the ruling of the Germans (1941–1944) and the Soviets (1922- 1941, 1944 - 1991) Ukraine is considered to be "the greatest victim of World War II" (http://www.infoukes.com/history/ww2/page-01.html, Andrew Gregorovich) due to the fact of having the greatest human losses and greatest material damage. From the actions of World War II the Ukrainian nation had to rebuild their economy, population and find a way to still maintain their culture under the influence of the Soviet Union. Ukraine was the country who had suffered the most material damage in World War II, meaning that they were left in an economic crisis. The military occupation of the Nazis and the "Scorched Earth" policy enforced b

Logical Fallacies in Othello

According to Vincent Ruggiero's Beyond Feelings: A Guide to Critical Thinking, the term logical fallacies refer to the concept of, "making errors that impairs reasoning and thinking," (87). The concept of recognizing when one is making errors in thinking may be difficult or unclear to see, so it is common for some to make the mistake of committing logical fallacies. An example of illogical reasoning and thinking is present in William Shakespeare's play, Othello, where Iago, who is Othello's most trusted advisor, plans and acts out his revenge on Othello, who is the good and noble general, because he is jealous over a promotion he did not get. Iago helps initiate Othello to commit logical fallacies and think uncritically by making unwarranted assumptions, automatically rejecting others, and making hasty conclusions when presented with the issue of his, "cheating wife," Desdemona. Due to Othello's unwillingness to recognize his illogical reasoning and errors in thinking, for he

Tragic Heroes of The Iliad and Oedipus Rex

Calvin Coolidge once said, "Heroism is not only in the man, but in the occasion" (brainyquote.com). Heroes are among one of the most popular literary figures of all time. A Greek philosopher, Aristotle, wrote his notion of classic from of heroism called tragic heroism in his work entitled Poetics. In Poetics, Aristotle explains that there are certain qualities that a tragic hero has that can qualify him or her as tragically heroic. Two Grecian literary legends, Achilles from Homer's Iliad and Sophocles's Oedipus Rex, fit the description of an Aristotelian tragic hero. Achilles, from Homer's The Iliad, is a tragic hero. Achilles's quick rage coincides with a key characteristic of a tragic hero. Agamemnon, the king of Mycenae takes Briseis, Achilles's prize, or woman. This act is an insult to him, as it is betraying Agamemnon as a more powerful figure, which makes Achilles seem like less of a man. Achilles is enraged by this act of self-righteousness; Homer writes, "Shou

My Greatest Weaknesses

I possess more strengths than weaknesses but even those few weaknesses have a huge affect on me. A few of my biggest weaknesses have always been my shyness and my lack of confidence. As far back as I can remember, there has never been a time where I have done something confidently without being put down and this has been the biggest factor behind my weakness. My shyness has been one of those things that came along with my lack of confidence. Over the years as I have gotten older, I understood things better. I feel as I understood these things better, the less confidence I had. It wasn't until my junior year of high school that I finally realized there is something about me that I must change. It turned out to be exactly one of my biggest weaknesses, my lack of confidence and my ridiculous amount of shyness. Lacking confidence has always affected the way others view me and what they think of me. The first thing people usually ask me is why I'm so quiet and shy and to be honest I could never exactly come up with a good enough response. The worst part about lacking confidence is that it get

Western Influences on Thai Food Culture

There are a million different reasons why fast food, processed food, or food that has been produced with artificial flavors, should be avoided or minimized. One of those innumerable reasons is Obesity. Obesity is a rising epidemic that has spread, and is still is in the process of spreading, all over the world. The cause of this epidemic, as I mentioned earlier is, our food. So what is wrong with our food system? A better question I would say would be: What's not wrong with our food system? Genetically modified food, As Birke Baehr says in his Ted talk video, is not wrong, "but when a fish's DNA is put in a Tomato, its just creepy", and yes, I completely agree, and no matter how much the scientists and the food industries claim or proof for it to be edible, it is not natural. And call me old fashioned, but I do believe in the saying "Don't eat anything your grandmother wouldn't recognize as food" (Pollan). The food we are eating now, in the fast food culture, it is

Play Summary - Educating Rita

Is the play "Educating Rita" a humorous or a serious play? In this essay, I will discuss the distribution of comedy and seriousness. The main theme is that Rita in the age of 26 decides she wants to be educated. "Educating Rita" also deals with serious themes as in: alcoholism, suicide and relationships. But in this play the writer have been able to make it exciting to read by making the characters humorous. Rita's ignorance and eagerness to learn makes her say things, which educated people find funny and sometimes stupid. For instance, the way Rita simplifies expressions from the technical language without being incorrect. (Rita says that assonance means gettin' the rhyme wrong). Later in the play, when Rita starts changing her voice and clothes, she appears rather comic. It is important to notice that she does not put on this amusing voice b

The Rebellions of 1549 and Royal Authority

Rebellions were not uncommon during Tudor rule. Henry's radical moves towards Protestantism and his foreign policy revoked uprisings such as 'the Pilgrimage of Grace'. Yet, the authority of the Tudor monarchs was never endangered for none were ever abdicated or assassinated. Nevertheless, the rebellions still remained a serious matter, in the rebellions of 1549 100,000 people died. However, a paradox between the nobility's perception and the reality of the situations was formed- the rebels only wanted to attack local government whereas nobles saw them as a threat to the monarch's authority. This essay will access whether these rebellions did threaten to compromise Edward VI's rule or if they were a misconstrued perception. The rebels became a national threat when they initially couldn't be contained and controlled by local gentry. In Cornwall and Devon, the 'Western' rebellion spiralled out of control as gentry men lost authority- one called Hellier was killed and Peter Ca

Iran and the Effectiveness of Sanctions

Iran is a nation surrounded on all sides by some of the States deemed most threatening to World order in recent years, its decline from democracy to an extremist Theocracy earning strict UN supervision, economic sanctions and a place among George W. Bush's "Axis of Evil." Iran's path to peaceful Democracy was interrupted by a Coup in the 1950's, following the occupation of the Allies during World War II. The Prime Minister was deposed by the Shah, and with backing from the CIA and British Intelligence forces, a new Prime Minister was installed with close Western ties. In the face of the aggressive West-oriented autocracy of the Shah's ministry, the people of Iran turned to conservative Religion, establishing a Theocratic Republic of Islam via Referendum through the 1979 Revolution. Relations between the US and Iran became strained from this point forward, the Iranian Hostage Crisis and Iranian relations with Islamic Fundamentalist groups such as Hezbollah indicating the direction in

The Illuminati - Past and Present

Many of our nation's well-known presidents, late and more recent, are known to be Free Masons, and also members of the Illuminati. Illuminati founder, Adam Weishaupt, said that the Illuminati will in silence possess themselves of the government of the states (Howard). Weishaupt wanted this new society to make its way into our government for a reason. John F. Kennedy said in one of his speeches, "The very word secrecy is repentant in a free and open society, and we are as people, inheritantly and historically opposed to secret societies, to secret oaths, and secret proceedings" ("Statue of Liberty"). Nevertheless, Kennedy was telling the world that there are governmental secrets and secret societies. Was he warning the world, or was he giving away one of his deepest secrets? That he was then a member of some secret society. Some believe this speech may have been the reason for his assassination. Other well-known and confirmed Illuminati members in addition to Free Ma

Economic Factors of American Foreign Policy (1890-1914)

American foreign policy changed drastically between 1890 and 1914, from isolationist to interventionist. This change was due to economic factors as well as several other important factors. Foreign Policy is the way a certain country deals with other countries. The Panama Canal was built (and completed by 1914) once the US had acquired a strip of land in Panama so it could build a canal. This would have been economically beneficial for America because it would have allowed trade with other countries more easily. It would have allowed the transportation of goods trans continentally in a much quicker time, between the Atlantic and Pacific. It would also have been a lot cheaper to travel through the canal then have to go all the way round to the bottom of South America, as less fuel would be used. Furthermore, the US could charge states to use the canal o

The McUniversity - Organization, Management and Academic Subjectivity

In their article, Parker and Jary discuss the New Higher Eduction reform within universities in the UK. Throughout the article, the authors are focusing only on the university teachers labour and their managers. New Higher Eduction has grown from a need in efficiency and improvement in university management and structure. Likewise, there were also financial matters. Budgets were too big and needed to be reduced. This reform (NHE) caused changes in the structure of the universities systems - they have become more bureaucratic. From the authors point of view, governmental and financial changes have decreased the academics independence and raised the management competence. Parker & Jary suggest a solution to improve the high education in the UK. They have come up with a three-layer model called an  'ideal type', in order to create changes in three different levels: The first one is national-structural. At this level the authors are interested in making a financial ch

Soils: A Frontier of Science

The Soil Science Society of America was created 75 years ago during what came to be known as the American Dust Bowl. The Dust Bowl was one of the worst environmental disasters to happen to the United States. When the SSSA was created, scientist knew very little about the science behind soil, and to be more specific, top soil. It is no doubt that the Dust Bowl could have been prevented if more was known about the soil in the Midwest at the time. "Greed on the part of land developers, ignorance on the part of many policymakers, and probably also the carelessness of many land managers unfortunately resulted in short-sighted decisions." (Baveye p. 10) To this day farmers and scientist alike still do not fully understand the science behind topsoil and it is very much a frontier science. There are many countries around the world which are experiencing the same difficulties as the United States did in the 1930's as a result. Baveye reports that soils play a huge part in the carbon c
