The Vulnerability-Stress Model and Psychiatric Disorders

This essay will describe and explain the vulnerability-stress model with how it identifies and treats psychiatric disorders in a stressful environment. It will also explain how in a real life practise with a client with anxiety disorders symptom fluctuates during the stressful life events. Zubin and Spring (1977) states a highly vulnerable person is one to experience in a life event an episode. The argument is to see whether the client or person develops symptoms from a stressful life event or has a pre-existing vulnerability to develop a significant psychopathology (p.109) Zubin and Spring (1977) published a journal article that outlines the stress and vulnerability model. They construct a graph for clients to have an active role to reduce the vulnerability to stress. The graph describes the concept of the vulnerability to clients when they are exposed to stressful life events. It shows people who have a low vulnerability may react better to another person who has a high level of vuln

Suspense in The House of the Seven Gables

True to its roots as a Gothic novel, the atmosphere of The House of the Seven Gables broods with ambiguity and fear, with this uncertainty culminating in moments of heightened suspense. In these moments, author Nathaniel Hawthorne breeds tension with a terse syntactical style, igniting imagination with suggestive language, and frustrating the reader with a limited perspective. By presenting the reader with the anxious experience of extended mental uncertainty in a mode akin to realism, he calls into question the reader's ability to perceive their world with clarity and confidence, undermining certainty with the suggestion that experience itself is unreliable. Suspense, a state of extended uncertainty, begins when the reader becomes unsure of the events of the story; throughout the novel, we feel this unease mount each time the narrator ceases to provide commentary and begins only describing events as they happen. This devolution into paratactic style manifests itself most maddeningly

History of Cheerleading

In 1880 cheerleading started with a group of men from Princeton University encouraging their football team. In 1884 after one of the original pep club members, Thomas Pebbles, graduated he moved to Minnesota and introduced cheer to University of Minnesota. That same school year two rugby players created the university's first campus "cheer." Cheerleading didn't become the cheerleading that is known today until 1898 when Johnny Campbell, considered the grandfather of cheer, took the yelling from the stands to the field itself. This is when many schools across the U.S. began implementing their own pep clubs. In 1923 the University of Minnesota introduced the first women cheerleaders, also in the 1920s a University of Oregon cheerleader introduced the first signs. In the 1940s cheerleading became a female-dominated sport since most collegiate men were drafted into the war. This was also when stunts and tumbling were added to the sidelines. In 1948 a Southern Methodist Univer

High-Speed Trains: The Future of California Transportation

Can you imagine our country without trains? By the 19th century, the ability to transfer goods by ways of high speed transportation had revolutionized our country. Our vast nation was finally connected. Now, there is a proposal to improve one of the needed prompts that will make our country run more efficiently. A system of high speed trains has been a possibility in America for the past couple of decades. This would be more than just a locomotive on steroids, but a sleek new design or possibly a magnetic levitating train (Maglev). While Europe and Asia have already taken full benefit of high speed trains, America has sat back and weighed the options. California is the hotspot for the idea, yet there are many who find issues with it. Despite its shortcomings, a high speed rail would ultimately benefit our state. It would create new jobs, bring in new revenue, and eliminate the need for other transportation improvements. The main problem of a high speed rail is that it would potentiall

Barriers to Political Transformation and Democracy in Iraq

An important topic in international politics today is if Iraq has the ability to politically succeed. Judging by their present democratic and military standing; Iraq seems to be headed in the wrong direction. The westernized view of political success or democracy is still in reach but Iraqi citizens must overcome a number of problems before it can be effectively achieved. Although a political transformation to a westernized style of democracy may never be fully accomplishable because of the differing culture and social norms, Iraqi citizens still must strive for their government to conquer these difficulties. There are four main problems in Iraq that have proven to be roadblocks in their fight for democracy. Foremost, the ongoing feud between the Sunni, Shia and Kurdish peoples in various regions throughout the country has played a major role in the government's ability to control Iraq. Another problem Iraq faces is the behavior of terrorist groups or organizations such as the infamou

The Presidency of Andrew Jackson

We, the Southern White Farmers, do strongly support President and General Andrew Jackson as we right well do prosper under his strong leadership, he can relate to us farmers, bein' an "ordinary" man and a white southerner himself- unlike those well to do city folk, and he is "a man of the people who works on their behalf." We consider Jackson "A man of the people who works on their behalf"-the people being us american farmers- because he strived and succeeded to remove the issues such as the Native Americans and the United States Bank hindering the good of the "common" Americans. Jackson is personally on good terms with the Native Americans and even has some friendly relationships. But on a more broad perspective Jackson rightly believes that whites are dominant over Native Americans and that unless they assimilated themselves into the white culture and "abandon tribal membership" they should fully move west and out of the way. And the

The Most Excitng Moment of My Life: Sky Diving

When I had just graduated high school, I experienced one of the scariest moments of my life: I went skydiving. Free falling from ten thousand feet up in the air, having my cheeks up to my ears, and screaming "ahhhh!" all the way down made skydiving the most exhilarating experience of my life. Tick-tock, I can hear the time slowly go by as I wait for my turn in the lobby. "When will they call my name?" I think to myself. As my heart races, beating in a pattern of making its own music, I hear what I have dreaded. It was my turn to get ready to jump. The instructor walks in with a bright orange jump suit in hand. I thought to myself, "Am I going to jail?" The instructor sits me down and talks about the jump as I sign the paper giving up my life. The instructor decides to give a joke; "The order of the jump will be squat, pray, leap, ahh, and tada! Also spelled out to be splat." Oh the humor. Now it is time. Walking down the aisle to the airplane, I felt as if I was saying goodbye to the worl

1984 - Symbolism, Imagery and Themes

What would happen if a society was under a dictatorship, which grants no freedom or rights for citizens? Individualism is not accepted under the control of totalitarian government. This issue is clearly represented through symbols in the novel 1984 by George Orwell, such as, Winston's varicose ulcer, Big Brother's existence, and the equation "2 + 2 = 5." Therefore, the total control of the Oceania government covers all aspects of life. The theme of the novel can be linked directly to the image of Winston's varicose ulcer above the right ankle, which indicates Winston's demand and the Party's obsession of thought-controlling. Another allusive symbol that Orwell aims to create is Big Brother, who is considered as a tool to usurp the supreme power by the Inner Party. The image of Big Brother builds up the theme of mind and religion control, which partly contributes to the totalitarian regime. Furthermore, the Party's desire to achieve total authority in Oceania is also seen from

Novel Comparison: The Kite Runner and Fahrenheit 451

People all around the world are discriminated against. The cause can be anything from being an intelligent individual to being born into another race. An individual is not born with the need to discriminate to against another, the root of the cause are influences they are brought up in. In the novels, "The Kite Runner," by Khaled Hosseini, and, "Fahrenheit 451," by Ray Bradbury, both the protagonists face the struggles of living in a life of discrimination and are influenced in different ways. The main characters Amir and Montag are puzzled, and they do not know if discrimination is the right thing to do. Discrimination is present in both novels, "Fahrenheit 451," and, "The Kite Runner." The main character Montag and Amir are brought up in this environment, therefore they learn to discriminate as well. In, "The Kite Runner," there is the issue of ethnic discrimination. In the Sunni (Amir's religion) or also known as Taliban controlled Afganhistan discrimination is everywhere. The Sunn

Genetic Disorder - Haemophilia

Genetic Disorder Introduction Genetic Disease or disorder is a change that occurs in each individual's DNA that makes up the gene. A disorder results when a gene is mutated and the protein product can no longer perform its normal function. They can be inherited because they are a change in the germ cells which passes the genetic information from parents to its offspring. Also it can have changes in the DNA in somatic cells or in other body cells; mostly it doesn't has to be the in germ cells. These disorders are caused by the mutations in the sequence of single gene. Most of the genetic diseases are multifactorial which caused by the mutations in many other genes lead by the environmental issues. Such as heart diseases, cancer and diabetes. Is Haemophilia Inherited? Haemophilia is inherited in the pattern of X-linked. This is because when gene mutation occurs is located in the X chromosome whi

Voltage and Current in Electric Circuits

Abstract The purpose of this lab is to calculate the expected voltage and current in the branches of sample electric circuits. Estimate the error propagation using resistor nominal values and associated tolerances. Verify the accuracy of the predicted branch voltage and current values using instrumentation. And for this experiment I just use the NI Elvis board and NI multisim to calculate the expected voltage and current. In this experiment I just find out about the error and propagation between theoretical and experimental values. The experimental values of all three circuits are compared through their difference in their percent error. However the percent age error of the circuit 3 is impossible and the values of circuit 1&2 are close to each other. It is beneficial of engineers stand point, because from engineers can creat more efficient circuits. Introduction In this lab specifically based on the use of DMM, Elvis Board II, Multi-Sim, Resistors. As we basically follow the ohms law

Longitude Meridians at Sea

Since the dawn of time, lines of latitude and longitude have played a significant role in a sailor's journey. These lines helped ships stay on course and obtain their actual destination. In the time being, Sailors measured their latitude by the hour of the day, or by the position of the sun. However, the measurement of longitude, by comparison, were much for strenuous to achieve. To master longitude at sea, one needs to know what the time is aboard a ship and also the time at the home port at that very same moment. Accurate knowledge of the hour in two separate places at once was unachievable during the ages of primitive technology. John Harrison, a mechanically savvy genius, devoted his entire life to finding a solution. He invented a clock that carried the exact time from one port to any other place within a large distance. His invention forever changed the perception of maritime exploration and paved the way for safer journeys across the ocean. John Harrison is widely known for hi

Planet Taco: A Global History of Mexican Food

In, "Planet Taco: A Global History of Mexican Food," historian and author Jeffrey M. Pilcher argues that globalization has been detrimental, and expanded Mexican food. Pilcher claims that the presence of global influence of America has taken away the authentic Mexican cuisine from their country. 1 It is a struggle to find authentic Mexican food. Throughout history, different cultures influenced other cultures, in this case many countries have taken, enhanced, or made different variations of Mexican food and made it their own. Taco Bell, Old El Paso, and many others have franchised Mexican food. Pilcher claims that NAFTA ruined Mexican labor. 3 Pilcher uses academic history and popular history, to help support his claims. Using the methodology of both popular and academic history in, "Planet Taco," it helps the reader to follow along and truly understand what points Pilcher is making about globalization. The way he helps people to understand globalization is relating it back to someth

The Swedish Model of Economy Development

Politicians, journalists, and economists have used the Swedish Moel concept in an unscientific and vague way, since the 1930s. The Swedish model began in the early 1930s, a period the country was lagging behind the economy of developed industrial countries in the world. The industrial development in the region was not strong enough to provide the growing population with constant employment, which resulted to people emigrating to America. The emigration was seen as a serious indicator that the development possibilities of the Swedish economy were going backward (Woolfson, Thörnqvist and Sommers, 2010). The Swedish model of industrial relations was used to rectify the situation. It was used to control the economic status of the country. It was seen as a successful and progressive model concerning the social and economic development that took place in a mixed economy. According to Lundberg(1985), there are several principle components of the Swedish Model that the model originated

Children, Gender and Socialization

It's usually believed that a person's personality is formed by genetics and shaped by his parents. After going to the store there are many indirect influences that we weren't aware of that changes the mindset of a child and their personalities. Certain concepts and roles are presented by the society as the norm that should be followed as if we all should fit in one mold. Molding is what toys does to children by categorizing them to their gender role First of all, the moment I stepped into the store I automatically recognized the pink and blue lanes that separate the store into half. The "girls" lane was filled with flowery pink colors and majority of the toys in the girls section were dolls. The messages that were sent to the girls on most of the toys weren't "be strong" "be confident" no they were "be pretty" "be you" be unique!" "unleash the inner you" "diva" "glam" . Actually, I find it a bit ironic that they send all these motivational messages however; their toys are all the same

Literary Foils in Great Expectations

The concept of a literary "foil" character is one seen in many a great work of fiction throughout history. A foil is a character (usually a minor one) that, either through direct comparison or through stark contrast, highlights significant traits of a major character (often the protagonist). Through this relationship that showcases the strengths and flaws of various characters, a message or meaning can be gleaned from the book. One such example of this occurs in what is considered by many to be Charles Dickens' magnum opus, Great Expectations. In Great Expectations, Herbert Pocket, Pip's best friend, is a foil to Pip for various reasons like his opposing view on life and his social habits. Their relationship exemplifies the message of Great Expectations, that money and social standing can either make or break a person's life. The primary reason for why Herbert is a foil to Pip is their easily observable differences in their social origins. Pip begins life in a very poor hou

9/11: Is the Government Telling the Truth?

On September 11th, 2001 at 8:46 AM, five hijackers flew American Airlines Flight 11 into the northern facade of World Trade Center's North Tower. 20 minutes later, United Airlines flight 175 flew into the southern facade of the Southern Tower. 30 minutes later, American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into The Pentagon. 1 hour later, a fourth flight, United Airlines Flight 93, crashed near rural Shanksville, Pittsburgh. Within 2 Hours, 2,996 people were dead, including the 19 hijackers that brought down the 4 planes. Because of these events, 9/11 is the largest single loss of American civil life in a deliberate act (Atkins, 2011). When touching the subject of 9/11, many Americans regard it as a tragedy and a unforgettable day; Some will even go as far to say that the attacks on 9/11 were a declaration of war by the alleged attackers, members and co-conspirators of the terrorist organization Al Qaeda. While a great deal of Americans and people around the world believe that 9/11 was an

Issue, Rule, Application and Conclusion (IRAC) for Sexual Harassment

Sexual Harassment is a violation that falls under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 as "Sex Discrimination in the workplace (The Free Dictionary.com, 2014). Explanation of this violation states any unasked sexual favors or request for sex, including any verbal or physical actions that are of a sexual nature that can create a hostile or offensive work atmosphere (The Free Dicttionary.com 2014). Sexual Harassment Law has two primary categories: Quid Pro Quo, a more blatant form of sexual harassment, referring to demands from a position of power (HG.org, 2014). The second category is Hostile Environment; this type of sexual harassment is the one that is most prevalent occurs (HG.org, (2014). Hostile environment refers to an employee that is subject to frequent sexual conversation, storytelling, nude pictures or images and sexual advances to the point that interferes with an employee's ability to work effectively because of the mental stress (HG.org, 2014). Abortion: Pro-Choice or Pro-Force?

Abortion is one of the most disputed topics in the nation. In this world, there are two primary stances in this debate: pro-life activists who believe abortion should be illegal under all circumstances due to the baby's rights, and pro-choice activists who believe women should be able to have the right to choose if they want an abortion or not. The big question in this debate is often: who has more rights, the mother or the unborn child? Abortion is controversial because some people find it to be immoral and may even consider it as murder. However, pro-life activists have not yet come up with a good long term substitution for this practice if it were to be made illegal. Abortion is a needed medical procedure that has many misconceptions but has been proven to be helpful for many women. By taking away abortion, one takes away the mother's' rights to choose how to proceed with their right to choose when and how they become a parent. Furthermore, the decision to make abortions illegal h

Research Paper - Depression

Depression is probably one of the worst feelings you could imagine, and I should know. I struggled with mild to severe depression for about two years in secret, I didn't get help or anything, and I didn't want it. I learned about it on my own, learned the cause and effects and how to overcome it. Research has shown that the levels of young people with depression or anxiety is sky rocketing. And most cases it has to do with schools. The pressure to get things done on time, having too much work is handed to them in one sitting, and the students who pick and bully each other doesn't help, and they don't know how to overcome it. Teachers are expected to help the students going through the problems, but usually don't. They ignore the problem even when they see it right in front of them. More studies show that schools start way too early. This study has shown that the brain is not ready to work properly until about 10:00am. Students today have the same stress and anxiety levels as the mental

The Feminization of Men in Advertising

It is true that feminism has brought a positive change in the world. Women now, at least in westernized countries enjoy equal political opportunity, increased economic independence and lesser social stigma from promiscuity. The resounding motto of today is "what men can do, women can do better" or some derivation of that sort. Technically speaking it is true. Take a man and woman with roughly the same height and weight, train them in, say boxing, for the same duration and have them duke it out in the ring. Chances are the match would go either way. And so it would seem that feminism has it right in this point. It does come however at a price, with the masculinisation of women comes the femization of men. Here, we define feminization as men embracing effeminate values as the status quo. This also includes apparent subordination and appeasement to women which is actually more widespread as it is insidious in its subtleness which allows itself to go under the radar. Here we use

Film Review - I Am Sam

The film "I Am Sam" is a fantastic film about a single father's struggle to keep his daughter, Lucy, because of his mental sufferings. Sam Dawson is a man with the mental age of a seven year old living in Los Angeles as a Starbucks employee. Sam is single-handedly raising his daughter and somewhat struggles with it as Lucy reaches the age of seven. Sam fathered Lucy from a homeless woman who wanted absolutely nothing to do with Lucy and Sam as soon as she was born and took off the day of her birth. Although Sam provides nothing but a loving and caring environment for Lucy, she soon surpasses her father's mental capacity which begins to cause problems. Lucy is aware of her fathers mental problem and chooses to pretend to not be any smarter than he is because she knows her father is "different". This begins to affect Lucy immensely in school and questions begin to arise about Sam's ability to care for Lucy and a custody case is brought to court. Sam's friends recommen

My Experience with Acne and Acutane

When first walking into the dermatologist office, I was nervous. Looking at my skin, wondering if there's even a way to get rid of my acne. When the doctor first took a look at my acne he said it was a rare case. As the only option I had to help my skin was Accutane, which is a powerful drug used in the treatment of acne. The end diagnosis was a severe case of acne, and I was put on Accutane for several months. This drug took me on a very bumpy road and changed my life forever. When I started to take Accutane I was in 10th grade at a public high school. Like any high school kid, I wanted to have perfect skin, but some of us aren't so lucky. High school has many challenges for students, one of mine being on the baseball team and keeping up with all of the other players in this challenging sport. The doctor said to be very careful about getting dirt on my skin and try to keep it out of the sun as much as possible. My response to him was that I'll try my best, because baseball is very
