Mike Rose - I Just Wanna Be Average

In the story "I just wanna be average" by Mike Rose, he tells about his experience through high school education and everything that went with it. Rose started off high school in the "vocational track", kids that the system places in this track have written them off but as Rose proves this system can be tremendously wrong on who they place into these classes. Rose ended up being successful thanks to the help of his English teacher, Mr. Macfarland, who inspired him to care about school, his school work, and to graduate and go on to college where he published poetry, scholarly research, a textbook, and two widely appreciated books about education in America and became a professor in the School of Education at UCLA. The purpose Rose is trying to make is if there were more inspiring teachers in high school today, maybe then students would want to stay in school and reach their full potential instead of being put in vocational track classes and being written off when m

The African Slave Commodity

Slavery was a high demand that affected the coast of Africa, and their people tremendously. There were many factors that contributed to popular slavery commodity, the African culture/society influence of profiting off slavery trade, global environment of agriculture production, disease, famine, and African diaspora. African culture is profiting off this slave market and changing their people into a commodity. In Africa there was the market of slaves gathered to sell to other African slavery trade throughout the world. "The trade of slaves is in a more peculiar manner the business of kings, rich men, and prime merchants, exclusive of the inferior sort of Blacks." Barbot makes this observation when he travels to Africa in 1678 and 1682. It proves that slavery was a high commodity and there were powers, involving kings, merchants, and even production empires in Africa contributing to it. Europe was colonizing in the New World, "Silver and later sugar, and tobacco paid for

Fighting for Rights After the Revolutionary War

In the late 1700's, change was happening rapidly in the United States. A new constitution had recently been ratified, and a large area of concern was the rights it would grant to different groups. Of these groups, the people that fought hardest for rights were women, Native Americans, and African Americans, though women received a few basic rights, Native Americans were driven off of their land, and most African Americans were still abused as slaves. It would be many years before these groups truly received all the rights and freedoms they deserved. Women saw the beginning of their journey to equality at the turn of the Revolutionary War. Many women fought in the war (though they also had to disguise themselves), but their legal status was still not equal to white men. They could not purchase property in most states, and the laws that protected them from abuse were very lackadaisical. They were not allowed to go

Poetry Analysis - Sleep by Kenneth Slessor

Kenneth Slessor is commonly regarded by many to be the best Australian poet of his generation, perhaps all time. His poem "Sleep" can be interpreted mainly in one of two ways. One could see it as a personification of sleep, or depiction of childbirth. The poem's textual integrity allows for both interpretations to be supported through techniques founded within the text. Each stanza within the poem provides evidence to support either interpretation although; Slessor may be using one of the said meanings as an analogy for the other. The first stanza supports the personification of sleep with the introduction of two voices. Slessor starts the poem with a question, allowing for the establishment of two aspects; the consciousness of sleep and its desire for a, "companion," conveyed through the italicised response. The relationship between the sleeper and the sleep is presented as consensual, founded through the question, "Do you give yourself to me utterly body and nobody," and the simple,

Autocratic Leaders - Peter the Great and Louis XIV

An autocrat is a leader who has absolute power. There have been many autocrats within history that have successfully ruled nations. They took complete control over their land and tried their best to make their people civilized. Autocratic leaders have made decisions which benefited their countries, but some decisions have also hurt them as well. A major autocrat in the 18th century was Czar Peter the Great. Czar Peter the Great was known for his Grand Embassy to Europe in 1697. Peter took this trip incognito so that he was able to gain European knowledge and experience their way of life. He then returned back to Russia 18 months later and introduced these European traits to his people. This was also known as westernization. Peter cut off the beards of his men in order for them to appear more European. He then later made his Russian people start to follow the European tradition. The Russian

Legal Case: The Mongols Motorcycle Club

In the U.S. there are about 33,000 violent street gangs, motorcycle gangs, prison gangs each with about 1.4 million members that are criminally active today, (FBI). The majority of these gangs are sophisticated and well organized; they use violence to gain power and control to boost their illegal money-making activities. This growing number of gangs and its members have caused a great deal of concern, many citizens all over the country who want to get rid of them once and for all. An attempt addressing neighborhoods gang problems a gang injunction was created to regulate the gang's public behavior. A gang injunction is a restraining order against a group; it's a civil suit that seeks a court order declaring the gang's public behavior a nuisance and asking for special rules directed toward its activity (LAPD). A few years ago, U.S. District Court Judge Florence-Marie Cooper granted an injunction that allows law enforcement officers to stop and seize any person wearing the Mongols logo. Mongols are a motorcycle club and alleged organized crime syndicate formed in Montebello, California, in 1969. It is estimated that there are 500 to 600 fully patche

Winston and O'Brien's Relationship - 1984

Have you ever heard the saying, "Keep your friends close, but your enemies' closer?" In the novel 1984, written by George Orwell, this is exactly what Orwell has done with two of his primary characters. The character O'Brien has kept a close eye on Winston for many years. He has watched Winston's every movement, waiting for the day when Winston would be sent to the Ministry of Love. Even after O'Brien tricked Winston into thinking he was on the opposite side of the Party, when really he was just setting a trap, Winston did not hate O'Brien. Winston does not hate O'Brien because he is Winston's friend, savior, and hope. When Winston was captured by the Party, it was O'Brien that continued to be there for him. O'Brien remained a friend to Winston. Winston says this while he is being interrogated: "he [O'Brien] was the tormentor, he was the protector, he was the inquisitor, he was the friend" (Orwell 244). Even though O'Brien betrayed Winston and turned him into the Ministry o

Macbeth - Lost Trust and Changing Personalities

In the play "Macbeth," William Shakespeare depicts a thane and his wife who viciously become heads of political power in Scotland through foul behavior and foolish decisions. Throughout the play the couple's personalities change, and diminishes not only their relationship, but their political power as well. There is a vast array of reasons as to why Macbeth falls from power, but the deterioration of their marriage plays an important role. This essay will discuss the reasons as to why the Macbeth's relationship crumbled and how it plays an important role in their political instability. The Macbeths' relationship mirrors their political power in many ways, and with any good marriage or kingship, you need to have trust. At the beginning of the play, Macbeth trusted his wife as he did anything she said even if he didn't want to. Furthermore, Duncan alongside his army all trusted Macbeth as he said, "He was a gentleman on whom I built an absolute trust" (Macbeth,I,iv,1

Abortion: The Best Decision

Pregnancy can be the most exciting time for a woman, to experience a life growing inside of her. However, what if when a woman finds out she is pregnant dread and unhappiness overcomes her? If there was no planning involved for the pregnancy or if it was under conditions beyond her control, she may not have the desire to keep the baby. She can choose to carry the baby to term and be unhappy or she has the option to abort the baby. Abortion is an operation or other intervention to end a pregnancy by removing an embryo or fetus from the womb. To have an abortion takes great deliberation and it would not be an easy choice no matter the situation. Although there are many different views on abortion sometimes it may not be the best scenario for the woman to carry a baby to term, and her happiness would outweigh all consequences. Under utilitarianism theory, the morally right action is the one that produces the most favorable balance of good over evil, everyone considered. With this in mind, what action should a rape victim take when she finds out she is pregnant because of the rape? Finding out she is

Citizen Oversight on Policing - Literature Review

Efforts of public policing incorporate a variety of community organizations and agencies that assume a vital role in overseeing and evaluating law enforcement. These community representatives are most commonly referred to as civilian review boards or committees and serve to generate accountability and promote transparency within their community. In cases of potential police misconduct or corruption, these boards serve to review situations without bias and are representative of civilian opinions. The primary goals of civilian oversight are to enhance police creditability, ensure accountability, and restore the public confidence in the police and law enforcement; however, this ideology is often met with some resistance from police unions and officers. Many officers state their reason for the opposition is that citizens are not qualified due to the lack of law enforcement knowledge and believe police agencies should retain control over "policing the police." The debate on whether civilian

Death Penalty - A Risk Not Worth Taking

Human rights are strongly supported in America. Yet, the government is still depriving people of their rights in many ways. One way people are being deprived of their rights is the use of the death penalty. The death penalty is often used to kill people who have committed murder. But it is not right to stoop down to the murderer's level by killing them. Killing people is wrong, no matter how you look at it. The death penalty can be viewed as cruel and unusual punishment, which is a violation of the Eighth Amendment. For example, some executions have gone wrong and it has taken a long time for death to occur after the lethal injection. In some cases, people have been killed and found not guilty after they were dead. The death penalty is not a surefire way to punish criminals. Another reason to oppose the death penalty is that there is always the chance that the defendant is wrongly convicted and put to death. Jury members may avoid the death penalty for this very reason. In addition,

Robocop - Film Review

"2014's iteration of "Robocop" is a kinder, gentler version of Paul Verhoeven's 1987 sci-fi orgy of violence" (James Berardinelli;Reelviews). That is the shortest and simplest way to sum up all the film's faults, but I will attempt to elaborate on this and give my views on the film after a viewing, and compare it to the 1987 original in terms of quality. In the year 2028, technology has become extremely advanced and with it so has society. As a result of this a world where humans and robots coexist is no longer a pipedream, in fact, Super-Company Omnicorp has turned the very science of Robotics into a whole new industry, exploring the science and applying it to many different uses, namely medical and security solutions. The company has for the past couple of years applied the later mostly in the Middle East, using fully armed units of robotic soldiers to police areas where "dangers to civilian lives persist." Head of Omnicorp Raymond Sellars wants to bring this same sit

Short Story - Eyes Wide Open

"Traveling - it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller," says Ibn Battuta. I have travelled to many places; I have gone to Bali, Borobudur Temple, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand. Every trip brings unforgettable memories that I keep in my mind and in my heart. Though I have had several vacations that bring good memories, none of them compares to the trip I made to China because I was able to experience winter as well as taste authentic Chinese/Mongolian food and view some of the greatest and spectacular panoramic sights in the world. The cold winter air welcomed my group including my mother, my father, my aunt, my uncle, my cousins Grace and Garry, my grandmother, and me, as we walked out of Beijing Capital International Airport after a six-hour plane ride from Singapore. While my father was negotiating with a couple of cab drivers, I looked around, trying to adjust myself to the strange environment and the cold weather. We stayed in Beijing for three days and

The Politics of World War II

World war one caused destruction to human life and property on such a scale that never had been witnessed before. The destruction didn't end there however as the pre-war political system also was destroyed. Thus the post war Europe saw differing political beliefs fighting for control. While the victors accepted democracy of war most European countries saw it as an alien belief and while some countries e.g. Germany flirted with it for a brief period the peoples longing and belief in a strong totalitarian leader soon became manifest. This was due to a number of factors including the post-war economic stagnation, a political polarization and the threat of Communism. Therefore in the period 1919-1939 fascist dictatorships with their promise of a strong nation state employment for all gained support in the inter war years and came to power in Italy and Germany. Economic Crisis During the war years most European countries experienced booms however war strained the limited finances forcing t

Unveiling War Through the Arts

In the Society citizens in, it is tough to find resources that show true detail from war. Politics will bend the truth to get us into battle and suffer the consequences. They do not have warning signs and with that, endanger the lives of many Americans. In John Singer Sargent's art piece "Gassed" and Wilfred Owen's poem "Dulce et Decorum Est", they will reveal the reality of war. John Singer Sargent includes strong images in "Gassed" to show the tragedies War creates. Gassed is an art piece created during World War I to show the outcome from the battlefield. Sargent painted soldiers that have all been hit with mustard gas. The toxic gas has made them lose their vision. The soldiers have their eyes covered with bandanas and are each holding on the each other from the shoulder creating a line. Towards the bottom of the painting, there are soldiers unable to resist with the pain the gas created. Sargent made a strong point when he chosed to make everyone of the soldiers suffer from the a

Portraying Border Lands in Movies

In mass media, Mexican and African American people are usually characterized as funny and stupid people. This issue makes people immediately stereotype these or other races when they see them or get know them - this is a huge influence on people for how they view other races. Many migrants come to the United States to improve themselves, so it is not reasonable how they are critically stereotyped. The concepts of border through the years have change dramatically. The border between Mexico and the Unites States is more than just a limit line between these two countries. This boundary separates the Anglo from Mexicans; the English language from Spanish, technology from basic knowledge, and traditions the border divides to whole worlds. When Mexicans come to the Unites States they face a completely different world. It is dramatic to immigrants when they realize how different these two countries are when they are so close to each other. It is amazing how different it is as soon as you cros

Lack of Motivation in the Education System

With all our educational problems in California, people have been trying to figure out what's gone wrong. Some say it's the funding; the money is not going to the right places. Others say we need to pick better teachers, or pay our current teachers more. Still even more people blame the government and the broken system. But the real problem, however, lies in the students' lack of motivation. Even though great strides have been made to improve California's school system's curriculum, the single biggest thing would be to help students find more motivation. The problem right now is that students can't see or plan for the future, so they feel like they have no reason study or do well in school. In the eyes of a high school sophomore, which would they rather do: study for that math test (why do they need math anyway?) or go and hang out with their friends? Unfortunately, many of today's kids wouldn't pick the math test. Mary Sherry, in "In Praise of the F Word," uses her son as a

A Life Worthwhile in the Domincan Republic

Mahatma Gandhi once said, "The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in service of others." Normally, I'd dismiss a quote such as this as nothing more than the teaching of yet another religious philosopher. Little did I know, this simple quote, unrelated to me in any way when I first heard it, would soon come to define the way I view life and the world around me. As my senior year of high school was coming to an end, a diverse group, consisting of eighteen of my fellow students and three teachers, embarked on the journey of a lifetime into a new and unknown world. We were to build houses for two families in Luperon, Dominican Republic. Geographically, it may not seem like a new world, or even an unknown one for that matter, considering the Dominican Republic is well known for its world class, all-inclusive resorts. However, culturally, it might as well have been a newly found planet, and we were its discoverers. Being the discoverer of a new planet, I naturally ven

Society and Gender Roles

Genderization is a trait that has been part of us since the evolution from the cavemen era. We as human beings subconsciously place others in one of the two gender categories: woman or man. Although this takes place without recognizing it, at times we do it to ourselves as well. Society plays a big role on what is expected from each gender and in many cases they set very distinct standards for men and women. When does society start individualizing us as a certain gender? It may be that it happens in the delivery room or in primary school or once puberty stage hits. Even before a child has been conceived, the parents and family members are already placing gender expectations on that unborn child. The first question in people's mind is, do you want a boy or a girl? From the answer, given gender expectations start to roll out of people's mouths. If it's a boy he will grow up to become a firefighter just like his grandfather or a lawyer or possibly run his own company. But if it's a girl

The Modernization of America

The United States of America has undergone a lot of changes over the years. Before the 1800s the country of 51-states was seen as a land with small opportunity, little power and mediocre wealth compared to the world power it is today, however, the growth and modernization of The United States steadily had an uprising after several occurrences, which I will touch upon and how it has possibly affected the country. The first event to be discussed is the civil war, more known in the history books as The American Civil War, a war in the 1860s that was to determine whether the survival of the union; known as the North, or the independence for the confederacy, which was the south. By the time of 1861 there were 34 states, in which seven southern slave states had declared their separation from the States and formed what was at the time, the Confederate States of America. The confederate states expanded with additional states and western territories. The states that did not separate were known as the Union. The South was once heavily run by the plantation economy and was one of the foremost important reasons to why the population had a slow rate of increase. Plan

The History of Prostitution

What is prostitution? According to the Oxford English Dictionary, prostitution is "a person who offers herself himself for sexual intercourse for money." Prostitution is lawfully the sale of sexual activities for money. The services exhibited by prostitutes may vary from oral to intercourse, and anything in between those lines. Prostitution is all over the world including, Thailand, Bangladesh, Mexico and the United States. Although prostitution has been seen heavily throughout our history, it still remains hard to view it positively. Many cultures have tried to ban prostitution based on religious or moralistic grounds. It is enthralling to note that in spite of an increasingly desacralized attitude towards sexual relationships, such as our society's growing tolerance of homosexuality or sex before marriage, prostitution remains being viewed as a disgrace. Prostitution dates back to ancient times. The first known prostitution was in the Ancient Near East. There were many shrine

The Puritans and Anne Hutchinson

During the time of the Puritans the government was heavily influenced by the church. Two important people questioned the ideas and beliefs of the Puritans. Anne Hutchinson a woman who held meetings in her living room to discuss the church sermons and Roger Williams a man who had a bigger impact on Puritan society. This essay will consider both of their involvements in the Massachusetts Bay Colony and how much of an impact each one had. Anne Hutchinson was convicted for heresy for criticizing the clergymen of the church and the government's authority. Hutchinson argued in her speeches that clergymen had no spiritual authority. She also challenged the role of women in Puritan society. Hutchinson also believed in individual's intuition, the belief that the people could decide for themselves on what was important in the Bible. For these reasons she was accused o

My Experience with McGraw-Hill's Connect

McGraw-Hill connect is something very different and new to me. I have taken English 1301 before and I wasn't approached into the class this way. Surprisingly, starting McGraw was easy and simple to comprehend. Going into the diagnostic I didn't know what to expect, but as I continued to follow through the learning process I learned that the information taught was based on areas where I needed help, or needed work on. I find this very helpful and cannot wait to fully finish the learning goals by the end of the semester. The first step to connect is taking the pre-diagnostic. Having failed English 1301 previously and knowing I haven't worked on any grammar or sentence structures in summer caused me to be a bit nervous taking the pre-test. Even though the pre-test wasn't a grade, I looked at it as a test for myself just to see how much I remember and know. I carefully took my time, readin
