The Motivation to Become a SurgeonMy best friend, Tanner, made the best impact on my decision to attend college. He also gave me the motivation and direction I needed to make my decision. Tanner and I call each other brothers even though we are not. No matter the situation we got ourselves into we have always been there for one another, and have done everything in our power to help no matter the cost. There for the advice and guidance we give one another is taken above all others. Early April 2012, I'm sitting in a chair inches away from the doctor's desk, my head in my hands looking at the cold white floor of the exam room. My legs shaking with a million thoughts and fears running through my mind at the speed of light. As the doctor begins to open the door to the exam room I feel as though everything is going in slow motion. My thoughts suddenly turn to the one thing I most fear she will say desperately praying she won't. She sits down with a saddened look upon her face, and rolls over close to me she puts her cold h |

Body Art and TattoosTattooing is becoming a trend nowadays and has become very popular to adolescent and adults in their early twenties. There are many forms of body modification, but tattooing is the most common of all. There can be multitude of reasons why someone may choose to modify themselves. For some, it is a way of expressing their thoughts, beliefs, experiences and their past-all of which make up of who they are at a fundamental levels. The method of modification that they use can become just as colorful as the individual. A tattoo is a form of body modification, made by inserting indelible ink into the dermis layer of the skin to change the pigment. The English word tattoo is adapted in the Tahitian word tatau, meaning 'marking something,' but also has obvious affinity with Polynesian word ta, which means 'striking something.' There are good reasons that tattoos goes back to Bronze Age. In the 1990's, between Austria and Italy, a human body was recovered with lots of tattoos; it i |

The Confinements of SocietyIn today's world politics impact everything whether people notice it or not. This big role that politics plays in life gives many a narrow-minded view. The people within the parties of politics have their views, some being more extreme then others. Most have an unwillingness to see further than their own vision of ideas. The mindset of only having one view, one thought, or one opinion about a topics leads to very little consideration of others. People need to be able to advance past their own ideas and see the views that have been left unknown in order to discover all the possibilities. Stories are much like life when considering interpretation. A few people may read the same books, poems, and articles but end up with a different result of their connections to one another. For example, John Krakauer's story Into the Wild displays the resistance of fitting into society and all of its confinements by the main character Chris McCandless. This character's decision to forget the ideology of |

Shooting Stars by Carol Ann DuffyWhen people learn or think about the Holocaust, victims of the tragedies of the time are often grouped together as one, as are most groups of people in historic events; consequently, each person's individual story and feelings are not deeply enough pondered. To change this common understanding, the speaker tells how he or she feels when taken to a concentration camp, discovered alive, raped, and the witness of a child being shot and what happens afterward. Carol Ann Duffy, the author of Shooting Stars , builds the theme of individuals' suffering as victims, especially of the Holocaust, through the use of symbolism, imagery, and structure. Upon hearing or seeing the words 'shooting stars', the brain will usually compose a portrait of a small meteor zooming across the stars and possibly a child making a wish underneath the sky, which will give the reader a pleasant and purposely false vision of what will follow. This misleading original thought is given to the reader to symbolize that bullets fly through the air as shooting stars fly through the sky. Duffy demonstrates symbolism in the title by stars' representing the Star of David, which Jewish people during the Holocaust |

Malory set them as the ones who align paths for men to reach their knighthood, becoming end goals themselves and even objects within a system to be feared. Women in this story are the sign of power in Malory's eyes. They are the Holy Grail in which men would die for unconsciously. Thomas Hardy - Background and The GoingIn 1870 Thomas Hardy travelled to Cornwall, where he met and fell in love with Emma Gilford, his first wife. Emma's death, on the November 27th 1912, inspired some of Hardy's most raw and best work. "The Going" by Thomas Hardy is one of many poems written by Hardy after his wife's death. Between 1912-13 Hardy wrote many poems addressing the loss of his wife with whom he seemingly had a tough and strained marriage. There were a number of conflicts in Emma's marriage to Hardy. Firstly, while Emma was of a reasonably respectable social standing, Hardy was distinctly working class. Emma it would appear firmly believed that she was superior to her husband in every way, particularly due to her birth. In addition to this, there was a religious divide between them. Emma was always a devout Protestant; yet Hardy increasingly lost his religion as he grew older. Their marriage was a very unhappy one, partly due to their lack of children. She also did not approve of some of his novels, in particular Jude the Obscure. Emma Hard |

Shooting an Elephant - Ethical DecisionsPeople struggle when they are making choices which are related to ethical dilemmas because it is hard to define what is really right when someone's decision isn't pleasing to others. The dilemma that George Orwell faced in "Shooting an Elephant" is similar to one many face in his or her life because people are facing different challenges all the time during their lives. In "Shooting an Elephant," the author, George Orwell contends with imperialism. Orwell was 20, and worked as a British police officer in Burma who was helping the British Government to spread out British imperialism among the Burmese. Although Orwell believed that, "I had already made up my mind that imperialism was an evil thing and the sooner I chucked up my job and got out of it the better" (141), he participated in spreading it. When he faced with the issue of shooting an elephant or not, Orwell was forced to shoot the innocent elephant to satisfy the Burmese who isolated Orwell mentally. In our lives, people are facing different ethical decisions. A friend of mine, Jean found out that her best friend was cheating during a final exam. Jean hesitated between |

America and State SuccessionShould countries be able to break away from their state to form their own? Secessionists across the country are rising up to do so. The government has denied their movements multiple times. It's time for them to face this issue and approve these movements. The county's opinions aren't being heard, they are in disagreement with the changes in beliefs and laws, and secession has been occurring since the United States was formed. Why stop now? Joey Beuer of Colorado answered with this when asked why they should be able to secede: "Because we are not getting heard." It's as simple as that. Everyone has a say in the government, correct? But these people are not being able to speak out for what they believe in among the state, they're always getting pushed aside. At Rice University, this |

The Dangers of CrossfitEver since I was fifteen, I have been following the most popular fitness trends ranging from pure body building to the world renowned P90X, but I have never encountered a more polarizing fitness trend than CrossFit. Having gone from 250 gyms to more than 10,000 gyms, CrossFit has definitely made a name for itself over the past couple of years and has caught the attention of a wide variety of people including elite martial artists, professional athletes, and even military special operation units. So what makes CrossFit so special? Aside from it being a cult of its own, CrossFit is an extremely intense exercise program that incorporates a mix of dynamic and functional exercises such as plyometric box jumps, kettlbell swings, and advanced Olympic lifts. These intense workouts are usually only 30 minutes long but require maximum physical exertion. In fact, functional movements combined with maximal intensity are the cornerstone of CrossFit and that's what makes it unique. Despite CrossFit' |

Child Labor and the Progressive Era: 1900-1920During the Progressive Era from 1900 to 1920, the reformers and the federal government were pretty successful in bringing reforms at the national level. This reform movement had the most influential reformers and worked closely with the federal government.Obviously not every single reform of the movement made significant gains, the regulation of corporations, the fight against child labor and the rights of women were three movements that were particularly aided by the government, pushed achieving success. For the first time in American history the US government was willing to try and work with public complaints towards the regulation of American corporations. This movement was pushed by new journalists who were known as muckrakers. Among these muckrakers was Henry Lloyd, who exposed the corruption of the powerful Standard Oil company. Other reformers, similar to Henry Lloyd, exposed the corruption of these companies to a large audience of citizens and furthermore put the politicians under great stress to serve the interests of |

Trying a Vegetarian DietFood nourishes our body to be able to accomplish out daily lives as what air and water's important in our lifestyles. Speaking of lifestyle, there is a trend nowadays about how we intake food and later be benefitted by this. This is the idea of vegetarianism. Vegetarians in this modern age is gradually increasing. It is not because they can't afford meat but because they have the courage and belief to do it. But what do a person made him a vegetarian? What it feels like to be one? Does it really have a lot of benefits? I experienced it in just few days out of curiosity. And I will call this the carnivores' fasting. My meatless experience. Start from the very first announcement, "be a vegetarian for a month", I really think it was impossible. What will I do with my "yeah I'm a meat lover"? But for the sake of my paper, okay I will try. I will go try hard. I know it is difficult not to bite on a teasing bacon on the dining table. But I need to conquer the veggie movement so again I will try hard. Honestly, I don't do it regularly although I decided that every weekend will b |

Non-Violent Communication in Addiction CounselingPeople who suffer from addictions can be described as people with a heart-at-war. In counseling those who abuse or have dependency on substances, it is therefore essential to be able to communicate with clients in a way that ministers love and healing to them; helping things to be corrected rather than creating further hurt, distress and objectification. In its book on resolving conflict and bringing peace, the Arbinger Institute (xx) reports that "home and workplace casualties are everywhere". The book points out, "bitterness, envy, indifference, resentment-these are the hallmarks of the hot and cold wars that fester in the hearts of family, neighbors, colleagues, and former friends the world over," (Arbinger Institute xx). These conflicts are already an issue in clients with addictions, and the method at which I communicate with such clients will either provoke more battles or can begin a process of resolving these conflicts through nonviolent communication (NVC). Lasater and Lasater (11) go so far as to say that, "...what we say changes the world," adding, "Th |

American Struggles of the 1800'sThe 1800's were obviously pretty rough. In the 1800's, there was barely any knowledge of medicine or treating wounds. The sicknesses and infections took over the body and killed so many in a few days Influenza, polio, smallpox, typhoid fever, yellow fever. Even mental illnesses could get you killed by the treatments for them. One of the earliest treatments was to drill holes into the patient's head. To treat coughs, the doctor just suggested smoking tobacco. Because of the awful working conditions, pneumonia was a very common sickness as well. In 1830, The Second Cholera Pandemic, which is an infection of the small intestine. It started in India then continued to spread overseas to the Oregon trail and killed almost 150,000 Americans alone. Malaria started in during the Civil war as well. Malaria used to be referred to swamp fever, chill blains, and the shakes. The health was so poor, people started dying from tooth infections even. Now we have studies, medicines, and miracles all of the time. During this time period, we have vaccinations and drugs for almost anything patients come to hospitals with. Tobacco is |

Insanity in One Flew Over The Cuckoo's NestThis novel presents the reader with, at the beginning at least, a clear line that is drawn between those who are "sane" and those who are "insane." However, what happens as the novel begins to progress, especially with the introduction of McMurphy into the asylum, is that these supposedly secure and discrete categories become gradually more and more confused and blurred so that terms such as "sane" and "insane" lose their meaning and it becomes very difficult to determine what importance these terms actually have any more. An example of this is when McMurphy leads the patients in watching the TV even though he knows Nurse Ratched had turned it off: And we're all sitting there lined up in front of that blanked-out TV set, watching the gray screen just like we could see the baseball game clear as day, and she's ranting and screaming behind us. If somebody would of come in and took a look, men watching a blank TV, a fift |

The Importance of a Good Night's SleepAs humans we need sleep. For almost everything in our lives. A good night of sleep improves memory, increases thinking skills, and keeps us alert (Goodman 2011). Sleep and stress are said to go hand in hand, as does stress and higher blood pressure (Goodman 2011). The higher the stress, the higher the blood pressure. So an average adult gets about eight hours of sleep a night, children get nine and a half hours.(National Sleep Foundation 2014). When a human is deprived of sleep, the entire body and emotions are shifted for the worse. We feel less aware, disconnected from our bodies, almost out of body and focusing on even the most basic things is a challenge let alone learning or teaching material (National Sleep Foundation 2014) In a normal life, adults and children kid alike there are certain if not many days where we are not able to get a recommended amount of sleep, and the next d |

Antigone - The Intersection of State and Family LawThe play Antigone is one of the few Ancient Greek dramas that showed the conflict of the law of the land and religion. Creon is the ruler of the land and thus, has power to enforce laws that he thinks is beneficial to the people. However, in exercising her power, he is faced with a conflict when he decides to not give Polynices, a traitor to his land, a proper burial. In the ancient times, the ruler of the land is the protector of traditions and family law and also the superior person that decides what is good and beneficial for his people. Antigone is right for standing firm on her decision to give Polynices a proper burial because it has been a tradition in the family and Creon should have respected it. According to Beuhausen (2008), the play Antigone presented a "conflict between two different legal sy |

Reasons for Changes in the UK PopulationThe UK population has experienced many changes. In the early 1900s the population was calculated to be 37 million, this rose significantly to 61 million by 2007 and is estimated to rise to 71 million by 2031. There are many factors which have contributed to the changes in the UK population over the years such as birth rates, death rates, immigration and emigration. Although there have been fluctuations in the UK's birth rates due to three baby booms, overall there has been a long term decline in the number of births. There are numerous suggestions as to why the birth rate is declining in the UK, including that the position of women in society has changed, the infant mortality rate has decreased, people are now living significantly longer and immigration patterns have changed. Over the years the position of women in society has changed. Previously the position of women in society was simply to produce children and to take care of them and their husbands, however due to improved laws on |

Ethnography of Merengue DanceFor my ethnography project, I chose to study how dancers express social and cultural communication and the different meanings of Latin Dance with a focus on Merengue. The themes for this study are based on ethnicity, regionalism, generation, and gender. I am interested to see the social and political meaning behind Latin American dances, which include Merengue, bachata, and salsa. Merengue is sometimes called the national dance of the Dominican Republic. Merengue music shares similarities with the Haiti's Mereng music, which is sung in Creole while Merengue is sung in Spanish. Salsa grew out of Mambo and Cuban Son roots. Mambo dancing was already very popular, then Salsa soon became popular in Puerto Rico, Cuba, and Columbia. Simultaneously, the popularity of Salsa music and dance spread across North America. Today we dance for various different reasons. Dancing gives many benefits. Some of these benefits are that dancing allows one to express oneself, a sense of unity is found in the |

Biography of Florence NightingaleOn May 12th,1820 one of the most influential women in the history of Mathematics was born, Florence Nightingale. The uncommon name, Florence, was given to her due to the fact that she was in fact, born in the beautiful city of Florence, Italy. Nightingale came from a family of young, ambitious, and strong-willed parents. In her youth, Nightingale's parents , William and Frances Nightingale, and sister Parthe Nightingale moved back to England, where they were originally from. She always received the best education. At first she was taught by the family's governesses, but later on her father took on the role of taking care of his daughters' education. The early introduction to the intellectual world would later have great, positive effects on Nightingale's life (Armentrout, David, and Patricia Armentrout). As a teen, Florence was very normal and popular, |

The Great Gatsby and the Valley of AshesThis is a valley of ashes--a fantastic farm where ashes grow like wheat into ridges and hills and grotesque gardens; where ashes take the forms of houses and chimneys and rising smoke and, finally, with a transcendent effort, of men who move dimly and already crumbling through the powdery air. Occasionally a line of gray cars crawls along an invisible track, gives out a ghastly creak, and comes to rest, and immediately the ash-gray men swarm up with leaden spades and stir up an impenetrable cloud, which screens their obscure operations from your sight. (Fitzgerald 27) The valley of ashes mentioned in this quote from the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald refers to a long stretch of land between West Egg and New York, which is soiled by the dumping of industrial ashes. The valley of ashes symbolizes the moral and social decay that results from the pursuit of wealth. The rich have misguided values and have no regard for the less fortunate; and the poor who live among the ashe |
