Feminism and Charlotte BrontëThe true definition of what makes a feminist text remains undecided, but can largely be received in light of strong female characters, social commentary, themes and the political stance taken by the author. For a question devoid of objective answers, I believe that in this instance it is best to take a more general approach. The strength of Charlotte Brontë's position as a feminist in literature is open to interpretation, but the impact she left was certainly a solid one. Liberation was a limited blessing for women in the Victorian era. Natural careers available were rarely more adventurous than domestic roles such as maids, or in Charlotte's case, governesses- an occupation echoed throughout her novels as a testament of her girlhood. Women were objects of attraction; existing to serve the purpose of the male eye alone, and in a time of blonde haired and blue eyed beauty ideals, her often plain protagonists found themselves tested by society in more ways than one. Beauty was the |

The Dark Side of Human Nature: Poe and HawthorneSection 1: A description of the dark side of human nature. Human nature is "the general psychological characteristics, feelings, and behavioural traits of humankind, regarded as shared by all humans." (Oxford English Dictionary). The dark side of human nature is the part of humans that dwells in negative thoughts or actions such as revenge, hate, violence, murder, and all seemingly evil things. But what is the dark side of human nature and how does it motivate evil, and how is it perceived differently? Evil is profoundly immoral and/or malevolent and occurs when someone knows what they are doing is wrong and continue to do so. Dark Romantic authors like Edgar Allen Poe and Nathaniel Hawthorne use gothic elements in order to portray the dark and gloomy undertones of the psyche of the stories' characters, and through the characters, essentially the nature of all humans. Section 2: Hawthorne and Poe consistently revealing the dark side of human nature. The Dark Romantics focu |

The Secret Online Profile You Didn't Know You HadEvery move you make on the internet is strategically analyzed from beginning to end. Just about every website has advertising, and nearly half of these ads belong to a single company, Google. The other half are owned by a small handful of companies who all do the same analyzing and selling of your data. The Evolution of DiplomacyDiplomacy generally means that forming relation with other countries or other non-state actor by using various ways. To do diplomacy one country must have their own representative as a connection from the country to form a diplomatic relation with other countries. Diplomacy usually used in order to manage or to expand the state national interest to other countries. As we know, diplomacy has been existed since the ancient time and has been used successfully by many empires in their territory in order to sustain and protect their countries. Not only that from my observation, ancient diplomacy is actually has been as platform for modern diplomacy in this modern era of globalization. In other words, diplomacy has evolved to become a dynamic practice of diplomacy. Diplomacy evolved to become a dynamic practice of diplomacy because from the ancient time of diplomacy, many empire or many countries has using diplomacy to practice and applied their national interest to other countries. Social Norms and Deviant BehaviorWhat is deviant behavior? Deviance describes actions or behaviors that violate the social norms of a group of people. Norms are social behaviors that are typical, or expected of a group, and are usually predictable. Sanctions can be positive or negative. Positive sanctions give permission or approval for certain actions and behaviors, while negative sanctions are threatened punishments for disobeying a law or rule. To figure out what responses society provides for breaking social norms, I have conducted an experiment and recorded my results. You may find it quite difficult to break social norms and act deviantly, as you have learned very early in life to behave in a certain manner. Deviance is determined by any member of a group. What is considered deviant to one person, may not necessarily be deviant to another. Deviant beh |

War World II and the Atomic BombAugust sixth, 1945 a devastating day for some and a victorious day for others. August 6th was the day the United States government chose to drop the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima and in one flash the world was introduced to the new atomic age. The United States and the Soviet Union were in an arms race to produce nuclear weapons and finally President Truman made the decision to drop atomic bombs on Japan, resulting in countless causalities and serious injuries. With something as detrimental as the atomic bomb it is often hard to be the devil's advocate and see the opposite side of popular opinion. Many were against the use of the bomb and many protested it, but this might actually have be the best decision the United States government could have made and has saved many lives from the very second it was first dropped. Because of our government dropping the atomic bomb we have been able to make military advancements that would never have been fathomed before and we have been able to m |

The Sacred Arts of LifeThe simpler path of life often seems to be the most challenging one for many. In the midst of our individualistic culture we invariably experience deadlines, competition and distractions, all of which have the ability to leave us perplexed enough to blind us from the beaten path we are on. Thomas Moore's The sacred arts of life, invites us on a journey to a place hidden by fast paced, ego driven society, and exposes us to a practical, leisure way of life which he proposes will reanimate the imagination and mystery that each of us seek in our daily lives. Moore himself, spent 12 years in a catholic order as a monk and studied music and philosophy. He earned his Ph.D in religious studies, and later became a psychotherapist. The sacred Arts of life is a representation of Moore's unending spiritual quest, exposing the little growth and transcendence he gained from the institutional religion and it's collective, communal idea of what is sacred. Moore's greatest hope is that we begin to |

Van Gogh: Comparison of Three PaintingsBy looking at three Van Gogh's artworks named "The Potato Eaters," "Sower at Sunset," and "Starry Night," it can be seen how Van Gogh's technique blossomed from a dark bud to a bright flower. These paintings were made at different times. As a result, they have different styles which make them have more differences than similarities. The painting "The Potato Eaters" was made in 1885 and is considered to be Van Gogh's first major artwork. He wanted to depict peasants and their lives truthfully. The painting shows few people – four are female and one is male – sitting around the table at dinner. On the right side, there is a woman pouring coffee and she seems to be the eldest among everybody. She is dressed in dark green clothing and is wearing white cap. On the left, there is a man who is dressed in a dark blue shirt and brown pants. He is taking the potatoes by the fork from a deep dish of potatoes. He is looking at the woman pouring |

The Kurds and the Middle EastThe Kurds are an ethnic group spanning across Turkey, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Israel, Armenia, Georgia and, Azerbaijan. Culture is something that we create, a system of knowledge that we use to survive and satisfy basic needs, we use it to adapt and communicate to other members of our culture and finally, to understand each other. There are five main parts to culture, Language, Marriage, Family, Art, and Religion. Language is a system of public knowledge used to send and receive precise messages that are understood by both the sender and receiver, and can be written or spoken. Marriage is the socially approved sexual and economic union between at least one man and one woman. Family is a unit consisting of a family and their kids. Art is play with form, producing some aesthetically successful transformation-representation. Defining the Emotion and Actions of EnvyIn 590 AD, Pope Gregory the Great wrote, "From envy arises hatred... joy at our neighbor's misfortune, and grief for his prosperity," [ CITATION Tar09 l 1033 ]. He also named envy a deadly sin along with pride, greed, anger, lust, sloth, and gluttony. The Christian faith teaches that to indulge in envy is to tempt eternal damnation. In contrast, members of the Jewish faith believe envy can motivate growth, and it only becomes a sin when envious people seek to take what the other person has. These contrasting religious views may result from two different kinds of envy: one benign and one malicious. Envy is a distinct emotion; it can spur progress, but it can also consume a person with resentment. The meaning of the words envy and jealousy are frequently confused, but they are different and distinct emotions. Envy inv |

Misuses of Simple Notification Services (SNS)If we were to list the factors that characterize this modern world, the use of the Internet would surely come up at or near the top. Of particular interest recently is the increasing popularity of SNS, with its ever growing impacts on our society, while presenting new challenges for us. In my opinion, the main problems of exchanging information through the Internet include the possibility of privacy violations and other misuses, and the long-term damaging effects on the quality of human relationships. The efforts to address this issue should include social movements and practical steps taken to reduce the chances of misuses. The main side-effect in the processes of circulating information through SNS is that many people can use them anonymously, and thus abuse the services for wrong purposes while violating the privacy rights of others. The problems of cyber-bullying can shed light on this point in |

Outcomes of Manifest DestinyThe idea of manifest destiny was one of the most significant factors in expanding America. Manifest destiny was the belief that the United States goal was to expand westward. The Americans wanted to expand from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean. Since Americans wanted to accomplish this goal of manifest destiny, they had to improve their transportation system, which in correlation ended up improving trade. Although many people see westward expansion as a positive thing, there were many of negative outcomes that came out of it. To get to where America is today they had to kill many Native Americans. There was also the question of slavery in the new states as we expanded westward. The Americans' desire to achieve manifest destiny increased transportation and trade, the extermination of Native Americans, and the question of slavery in the new states. To achieve the goal of reaching our manifest destiny, it was crucial for Americans to improve their transportation sy |

Comparison of Love in Annabel Lee and The Raven"It was many and many a year ago, in a kingdom by the sea that a maiden there lived whom you may know by the name of Annabel Lee." "Annabel Lee," is a tale of two lovers separated by death. "For the rare and radiant maiden whom the angels name Lenore-Nameless here forever more." "The Raven," is a poetic story of a man who is separated from his love by death and he is trying to accept her being gone forever. In Edgar Allan Poe's works, "Annabel Lee," and, "The Raven," both narrators have lost their beloveds by the hands of angels, but in contrast Annabel Lee's lover is happy and in denial not believing she is dead, on the other hand Lenore's lover is trying to accept her death. There are many similarities in the narrating men of these two works by Poe. In both the men are barely described, they only speak of the women they love. In both works the narrators believe that angels above are the cause of the deaths of their lost loves. From, "The Raven," "For the rare and radiant maiden whom the angels name Lenore-Nameless here forevermore" and in, "Annabel Lee," "The angels not half so happy in heaven, we |

Advantages and Disadvantages of TechnologyAlbert Einstein once said, "It has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity." Even though he was referring to atomic bombs, his point is still valid. We are becoming slaves to our own technology and it is happening faster than we can comprehend. Technology has now became an essential part of our lives and we cannot live without it. Our rapidly advancing technology is limiting and crippling our society's inhabitants. We live in a high tech world, and the more advanced technology becomes, the more it seems to have control over our lives. It is difficult to imagine a world without technology. Technology have a lot of advantages but it has a lot of negative sides and the negative side can have serious and long-term consequences. As now technology is everywhere, surrounding us, it is stopping us from being ourselves. People who use technology have lack of bonds with others leading to isolation. Technology also leads to depression, diseases and wrapp |

Stealing Secrets by H. Donald Winkler"The truth is indeed stranger than fiction," says H. Donald Winkler, author of, "Stealing Secrets: How a Few Daring Women Deceived Generals, Impacted Battles, and Altered the Course of the Civil War." Winkler is right, especially pertaining to the topic of his book, which focuses on female spies in the Civil War. Women such as Rose Greenhow and Sarah Slater hid secrets in their dresses and hair and brought them illegally over enemy lines despite the risks. Winkler makes reading about the Civil War interesting and exciting. One would recommend this book to others because it is well researched, well organized and presented and it is predominantly objective. One cannot write a historical nonfiction book without doing at least a little bit of research. H. Donald Winkler did that and more with his research of female spies during the Civil War. He read many books on Civil War spies but could not find a lot about female spies, so he had to look many different places to piece toget |

Female Characters in The OdysseyIn, "The Odyssey," Homer includes many female characters, which orchestrate key roles in the epic poem. Athena had Odysseus' back throughout his journeys and offers him assistance when he needs it most; Calypso and the Sirens attempt to taunt and entrap Odysseus and distract him from his goals; and Penelope is a clever and cunning woman who represents Odysseus' entire journey and what he is fighting for. Female figures play an important role in The Odyssey and reflect a complex, broad view of womanhood on Homer's part. Athena always has Odysseus' back. When Zeus questions Odysseus, she asks, "Are you not moved by this, Lord of Olympus? Had you no pleasure from Odysseus' offerings beside the Argive ships, on Troy's wide seaboard? O Zeus, what do you hold against him now?" (Book 1, Lines 1-4) Athena attempts to protect Odysseus from the many dangers he faces, such as the wrath of Poseidon, which he receives after he taunts the Cyclops. Even when he does not know it, Athena is |

Joe as Pip's Father Figure - Great Expectations Everybody needs people in their lives. We need someone to support us, to guide us and to get us through the hardships the world throws at us. Whether that person is a parent, sibling, or a friend, despite how strong and independent of a persona some let off we all need that one person to act as a parental figure in our life. Pip was not lucky enough to find this off the bat. He never had that father or mother figure with him but whether he saw it or not there was still someone there. Through Joe's actions of support, trust, comfort, and letting Pip know he would always be there for him, Pip looked up to Joe as the father figure he never had. Throughout Great Expectations, it is shown that Joe has a heart full of love for Pip and supports him and because of this Pip saw Joe as the father figure he needed in his life. Joe continuously shows Pip that he is there for him and supports him throughout the book. One of the examples of this action is in chapter four, during Christmas dinne |

Media's Stereotyping of Women and the PoorWhether it be billboards, movies, magazines, or books there are so many stereotypes of women and the poor but many have chosen not to notice them or to point them out. They remain in fear of seeing their favorite movie being sexist or their favorite book a starting grounds for bullying the less wealthy. Perhaps, people are just reading and watching for entertainment rather than moral lessons. Media chooses to project offensive and mind-controlling stereotypes of women and the poor, thusly, hiding the truth from these and all people and provoking unhealthy results. By uncovering the underlying sexism, objectification, and absurdity in the social class system in the following Media, one would hope that after this essay more people would be encouraged to realize and stop the stereotyping of women and the financially inclined. Most movies and shows about women contain a plot line where woman's life revolves around a man. In The Leap Year , Anna (the main character) has no other real life |

Khmer Rouge and Current Cambodian SocietyConflict has a general impact on the development of society and is based off certain aspects by which can be measured statistically and/or analytically. There are many examples of this idea that has played true consistently during the course of history, one of which being Cambodia. The effects of past conflict on the development of Cambodia has had, and still has, a noticeable effect on many aspects of the current Cambodian society. Cambodia is a nation which is well known for the atrocities committed by the Khmer Rouge in 1970s and would, in effect, have a detrimental impact on the development of the country. Hence, this paper seeks to explore the lingering effects of the Khmer Rouge's party on current economic, social, and political components of society in present day Cambodia. The Communist party of Kampuchea (CPK), formally known as the Khmer Rouge, took control of the Cambodian government in April 1975 (Gottesman, 2003). This siege of government occurred when the Khmer Rouge ove |

The Time Scale of Global WarmingElizabeth Kolbert once said, "Global warming is all about scale" While it would be ideal to solve today's rising climate change problems expediently, there are many factors in society that instead prevent us from implementing positive solutions in the environment. When you look at climate change on a global or geographic scale, it is difficult to pinpoint one country, region, continent, or even hemisphere as the main source of conflict. Collectively, our global society has contributed to global warming, each in our own rights. Furthermore, when you look at climate change through the scale of time, it can be difficult to recognize the serious changes developing in our everyday lives. Due to time scale, climate change is usually never considered a priority in a person's life because they cannot tangibly experience it in their lifetime. The challenges produced by both geographic and time scale in the search for a feasible solution to stop climate change illustrates the influ |

Pyramid Architecture and ConstructionOne of the greatest architectural achievements would have to be the construction of pyramids. The prospect of building a pyramid today is now less daunting than back when the Egyptians undertook the challenge. The ingenuity required to accomplish such a feat back then is just astonishing, and there are several resources that give an account of how exactly the Egyptians succeeded. While there are many topics I could have researched about regarding pyramid construction, I chose to research both the history behind pyramids, and the means by which the Egyptians moved the stone blocks in to place, especially as the pyramid got taller. More specifically, I will be focusing on the first Egyptian pyramid, and the Great Pyramids at Giza. The first source that I found is a book that gives a detailed account of both the Djoser's pyramid (the first Egyptian pyramid), and the Great Pyramids at Giza. Djoser's pyramid was the first pyramid of its kind and was engineered by Imhotep, the first recorded architect. Both Egyptian Pyramids and Art History, describe Djoser's pyramid as a six step step-pyramid with the burial chamber laying under the pyramid. Th |

Career Goals - Learning to Teach OthersLooking back at the times where I fought to stay at home instead of going to school, I laugh. I laugh at the idea of me scowling at my parents because they were making me go to school. I now thank them for pushing me to make good grades and go to class; I am lucky to have them. Others do not have the luxury of motivating parents to help them finish school, so either they help themselves through school or they drop out from school. Living life on the streets, selling drugs, joining gangs, robbing and stealing. I have seen these things happen in the community I grew up in and disliked it. I vowed to further my education to earn a degree to become an educator. With this degree, I will become that motivating role model to encourage kids to stay in school to best their chances later in life. Every kid in school faces choices and peer pressure. Choices are especially dangerous for kids because that do not know the consequences that will come with the choice they will choose. Kids lack positive role models to go to in time of cr |

Defining Great LiteratureGreat literature can fall into many categories and can be written about a wide range of topics. According to Classical Literature, a classic or piece of great literature can be defined as, "literature of any language in a period notable for the excellence and enduring quality of its writers' works." This is true, most literature holds lasting recognition either from critics and/or other people who are in a position to be able to influence such decisions. It must also have a universal appeal. Great literature usually has to deal with its time period, yet the message is so timeless it can apply to any generation. In most cases this is true but in some cases, for example if a book was written in the 1600's it may have nothing to do with today's time period. It may have no reoccurring themes of the two time periods. Most importantly all great literature has symbolism in it, no matter if it is poetry or a novel there is always a deeper meaning. All literature that is considered gr |

As You Like It and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's NestJourneys are inherently a transformative process, with opportunities taking the form of new understanding of both a character's self and the context surrounding them. Both Shakespeare's comedic play As You Like It and Ken Kesey's post-modernist novel, "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," portrays the transformation of its characters throughout the texts, via a close examination of the gradual evolution of character that occurs within the protagonists of each text. During the process of the journey, characters encounter certain obstacles which act as a conduit to personal evolution. This can be seen in Shakespeare's, "As You Like It," which explores the growth of characters throughout their journeys through an examination of personal adversity. "Why, whither shall we go?" In this, Shakespeare employs alliteration and evocative imagery so as to highlight the adversity of Rosalind's situation and her abject helplessness as a result, which serves to introduce the journeys transf |
