Fieldwork Experience: Special Needs StudentsIntroduction My fieldwork practice environment was a special needs department at a high school in Dunedin. The department is made up with pupils who have learning disabilities and physical disabilities. My supervising occupational therapist mostly did shopping and cooking with the pupils and assessments at other primary and secondary schools in Dunedin. He worked alongside the head of the special needs department, two teachers, a physiotherapist and teacher-aides. At my placement I gained valuable experience in working with students with disabilities and I also learned how to use the moderate needs screening. The story I have written describes a Moderate Needs Screening for a student from a secondary school outside the setting of my placement. Consent was gained to conduct the moderate needs screening. I had never met the student prior to the assessment and had only read his application form for the assessment. Previously I had taken part in an earlier assessment where I played a mino |

The Trial of Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo VanzettiThe trial of Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti in the 1920s was an important trial for American history. These two men were charged with murder during an armed robbery, and found guilty and executed by electric chair. The entire trial was filled with problems, ranging from biased opinions of the judge to untrustworthy evidence. Because of this, some people still question the verdict today. In Sacco and Vanzetti: The Men, The Murders, and the Judgment of Mankind, Bruce Watson presented his views of the trial. Watson presented both sides of the argument, but it's clear that he believed the two men were wrongfully found guilty of a crime they did not commit. This trial came about during an important and hard time in American history known as the Red Scare era. There were constant fears of anarchists and radicals rising to power, forming unions, strikes, and even assassination attempts; therefore, the general public made irrational decisions to protect themselves. When Sacco and Vanzett |

Charlemagne's Empire and the Balance of PowerCharlemagne is arguably one of the most influential leaders of the eighth and ninth centuries. He called himself King David, as David had united Israel in earlier years. Also known as Charles the Great, he used the great wealth and strong military power that he inherited from his father to grow his empire. Charlemagne was able to unite the various Germanic tribes of the nations he conquered for multiple reasons. With a tall stature, independent attitude, and strong appearance, he gained respect from his people, as well as other nations and rulers. Because of his desire to expand both his and his everyone else's education, Charlemagne was seen as a wise leader that his people could trust. He spread religion throughout his empire effectively, but through political force. Known to many as the "Father of Europe", Charlemagne was large and strong, and his appearance was always stately and dignified (Doc 1). Charlemagne was a very open person as a ruler as well as in his personal life; which is an excellent quality of a strong ruler. He invited up to 100 others into his bath (Doc 1) showing that Charlemag |

Shooting an Elephant - George OrwellGeorge Orwell, Author of" Shooting an Elephant". Began by stating and opinion of the Burmese natives saying," (He was hated by large number of people") Orwell 133. Including the young monks. Orwell was a police officer that hated his job in the city of Burma. And had death in his hands when he decided to kill the poor Elephant which is selfish in his part, all he did was show what kind of a coward he is. In this article we can see how Burma and Burmese politics have been connected to religion. Ultimately we see that Burmese monks were never scared of a little trouble, Just to shield against unfairness, depression and exploration on the country this is the ultimate sacrifice they made for peace on Earth. The monks are gift to society. Orwell says" He was obvious target and was baited whenever the Burman feels it was safe. Lesbianism and Drag Culture: Defined CulturallyVery seldom is there comparison and research on both lesbianism and drag culture. Choosing to research these topics presented a topic that is interesting and not widely discussed in a cultural perspective. In this paper, the two groups will be divided, yet combined to show the comparisons as they both belong to the LBGTQ community. Women are some of the most important beings within the world and society. They are responsible for procreation, they constantly deal with comparison between men and they are often subjugated to conforming to what society wants them to be. So when women are looked in reference to sexuality and their gender preferences, it is very rare that they are accepted as homosexual because society believes that their only responsibility is to procreate and the only way to achieve that is through heterosexual relations. Though times and ideals have changed majorly, in some cultures it is still a major controversy. So to gain a better understanding of the homosexual commu |

Manufacturing, Sweatshops and WagesOverseas manufacturing and production of goods has given rise to a huge boom in profitability and output for multinational corporations. Companies can now make more for less, which is great news to any stockholders or company owners. However, they have also given rise to sweatshops with atrociously low wages and abhorrent work conditions. Again and again we are seeing people question the morality of these sweatshops wondering what should be done. The answer is not as simple as it may first seem. While it seems easy to say "just raise their wages" the actual application of such is more complex. As a CEO you have an obligation to your stockholders and to your job to increase profitability however as a person, you have a moral obligation to your fellow humans to reduce suffering. As a CEO, I would raise wages because morally, it is the right thing to do. The issue at hand here is that, as we know, sweatshops have notoriously low wages and poor working conditions; however they |

Drugs and the Human BrainA big problem in today's world is the habitual drug use by teens and young adults. A 2010 survey shows that by the time kids are in eighth grade about thirty-six percent of them have used alcohol at least once in their life. This number increased to seventy-one percent by the time the teens reached twelfth grade (Matheson, 2014). Drugs is a broad term, but it includes and is not limited to the use of alcohol, marijuana, pain-killers, and over-the-counter drugs such as Tylenol. All these drugs when used constantly can have a huge effect on the brain. Many teens and young adults that use these drugs incorrectly is continuing to grow due to the unawareness of the underlying cause and effects that these drugs can have on the brains neurotransmitters. Squegaulla says the following, "When kids start drinking, the brain works harder to keep up, but over time [the brain] can no longer compensate, and performance drops" (Hopson, 2013). So with continued use of drinking, kids performan |

The Progression of Prosthetic I-LimbsTechnology has come a long way over the past few decades, whether it was in medicine, academics or communication. Educators have more resources and materials to help students learn and teach them in school. Army families can FaceTime their husband or dad and actually see their face and hear their voice at the same time. Although these are all positive things, there is one thing that stands out to me. Bionics have really progressed over the years and can not only give people an arm or hand, it can completely change someone's life. Technology has changed the field of prosthetics and how they have worked. We've all probably heard of an IPhone, but how about I-limbs made by Touch Bionics. Imagine having a bionic hand that can be controlled by Bluetooth or a remote. Prosthetics is the most beneficial advancement in technology because people that were born without or have lost a hand now have mobile apps, grip chips and can even rotate their fingers at the knuckles. A mobile app called "I-limb |

The Crucible - The Way to RedemptionA "crucible" is defined as a metal container used for melting and purifying substances at high temperature or a place or occasion of severe test or trial. The definitions of the word refer to the critical themes of Arthur Miller's play The Crucible. The play depicts the witch trials, sparked by the lies and hysteria of the God-fearing Puritans, in the village of Salem. Their sanity and fear bring the entire community to a melting point, where they are caught up in the deceit and paranoia, and put it through a severe test during the trials. In Act IV of the play, Arthur Miller reveals the absurdness of conformity and value of self-worth when John Proctor, the protagonist of the play, abandons his obsession with maintaining his reputation and believes in his integrity. The corruption of the Puritan society exhibits the absurdity of the witch trials when John Proctor realizes that the judges only need his confession for their own benefit rather than cleansing his soul of guilt. Rules and Regulations of Airport SecurityAirport security is an issue that has been creating a lot of fear throughout the public. After the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001, airport security was reviewed and several changes were put into place in order to keep up with both the spread of disease and the creative ideas terrorists have used, some of the changes reducing the risk to fly. Before the September 11 attack, there were several issues associated with airport security. Airport security was considered a "joke" before the attack due to their ease and lax behavior. Riding an airplane was almost as easy as riding a train. The security at the time was run by the airlines themselves, providing their own employees. It was very simple to bring something that was prohibited onto the plane. All one had to do was just put any of those objects into a bag. They only checked people through metal detectors rather than also checking peoples bags which was a huge mistake. They just asked a couple of questions of what you |

Brave New World and 1984Brave New World and 1984 are two novels that both take place in a totalitarian world; however the two worlds are very different. Huxley explains a world where the only things that are forbidden is having babies, being unhappy/questioning the state, and refusing to do the jobs and duties assigned to them. Contrastingly, 1984 is much more restrictive in the fact that they have complete control over the people, not allowing them to find love, not giving them privacy, nor allowing them to think badly about the government. Furthermore, in 1984 the government puts effort in inducing fear in the citizens by saying that they are in war, and they also use threats of torture if someone steps out of line, even in the slightest. Although both regimes control their citizens through the destruction of social relations, technology and controlling their sense of freedom, Huxley's world state will clearly outlive Orwell's party because Brave New World supports the development of a blissfully ignorant s |

Bone Detectives: Formal Case ReportIntroduction After the shocking discovery of a skeleton in a park, we are here to analyze the remaining bones to find the identity of the deceased person. Summary of Findings The gender of the skeleton was first analyzed by looking at the skull and the pelvis because both have significant differences between males and females. The pelvis was heart shaped, showing the sacrum and coccyx, hinting that it belonged to a man. The notion the skeleton was male was further proven with the examination of the skull, the results were consistent with average male traits. The skull had square eye orbits, the mandible was square or U shaped, and the zygomatic process was expressed beyond the external auditory meatus; this all proved the gender was male. The limitations of these methods show that certain qualitative traits can be interpreted differently, such as a V-shape or a round frontal bone. The subject's race was determined b |

Argumentative Essay - VaccinationsImagine the child that you adore suffering. He or she has contracted a serious disease that could have been prevented. Countless diseases from tuberculosis to mumps, pertussis, scarlet fever and the measles were once thought to be eradicated. Unfortunately these diseases, once thought to be eradicated, are reoccurring because people are not being vaccinated like they once were. Vaccinations should be mandatory since technological advances have made them more beneficial than harmful and will reduce the reoccurrence of eradicated diseases. Vaccinations are the administering of antigenic material to produce immunity, or close to immunity, to a disease. Noticeably, vaccines have had a large impact on our world today. Since they were first discovered until now they have advanced in accuracy and in turn brought a tremendous amount of benefits. To begin, according to unicef, approximately 5 million lives are saved annually due to vaccinations. There has been elimination o |

Immigration Reform in the United StatesSome 12 million illegals reside in the United States. The problems that they have brought with them, intentionally or not, has turned our country and our Congress on its head. Most of our solutions have been misguided in their approach, and have put the cart before the horse. We have failed to follow through on the steps that must first be taken before immigration can be properly addressed: securing our border, and enforcing legislation already written on the matter. Since neither of those things are going to happen overnight though, let me instead explain the background behind the baggage that immigration carries with it, and why illegals should face the same obstacles that legal immigrants do when tasked with becoming an American citizen. The purpose of this is to not only provide more opportunities to newly legalized immigrants, but account for the crimes that they have committed as well. Obama's proposed plan is to make the illegals pay a fine and work over the 10 years to create a pathway to citizenship. Before the first, and supposed one-time only, amnes |

National Security and ISISThe United States has been playing a major role in the world for the past 60 to 80 years. However, the role they have taken on has impacted the US for the better, and for the worse. The views many countries today have about the United States, are not good ones, and that could be in correlation with our military presence almost everywhere. This is one of main reasons why I think that the threat to the United States national security from international terrorism has increased immensely. On page 132 of our book, Controversies in Globalization, terrorist attacks are reported annually, and "Casualties from terrorism soared after the mid-1990s, although the majority of them resulted from sectarian violence with Iraq. The 9/11 bombings in the United States, while tragic, were only a small portion of the total terrorist attacks and casualties." Since the attacks on 9/11, terrorism has attracted a huge amount of attention in the United States, with terrorism being t |

Saboteur - Film AnalysisAbstract The film Saboteur, is not one of many of Hitchcock's classics. Then why wasn't this film successful? There is a very simple reason. The film is one man, Barry Kane, trying to prove his innocence- of two things. He is proud of his country and this is a point touched upon greatly by the film. "But their casual presentation of the FBI as a bunch of bungling dolts, their general disregard of authorized agents and their slur on the navy yard police somewhat vitiates the patriotic implications which they have tried to emphasize in the film. One gathers that the nation's safety depends entirely on civilian amateurs."We got to see the effect of it, which was World War II. This film wasn't very Hitchcockian in it's main actor's abilities." However, the film's lead performances, typically a Hitchcock strength, never match the quality of the supporting cast. Robert Cummings, in particular, lends little finesse to his two-dimensional do-gooder and renders much his more important dialogue ine |

The Founding Brothers - Book ReviewIn Founding Brothers, Joseph Ellis connects six crucial historical events that manage to capture the passion and feeling of the revolutionary generation as wells as its great leaders. Although each chapter can be read separately and completely understood, they relate to a larger, common theme. One of Ellis' central intentions in writing the book was to demonstrate the early stages and tribulations of the American Government including its system. The brilliant author explains the unique obstacles that the revolutionary generation encountered as a result of governing under the new concept of democracy. Ellis descends deeper into the subject by enlightening the readers to true insight of the important participants of the generation. Ellis' work tries to capture the moral beliefs of the revolutionary leaders along with their conflicting political viewpoints. Joseph Ellis presents the personalities of John Adams, Aaron Burr, Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson, James Ma |

Canada and GlobalizationSome Canadian citizens argue that globalization is a positive development because it will give rise to new industries and more jobs in developing countries. Others say globalization is negative in that it will force poorer countries of the world to do whatever the big developed countries tell them to do. Another viewpoint is that developed countries, such as Canada, are the ones who may lose out because they are involved in outsourcing many of the manufacturing jobs that used to be done by their own citizens. Thus, it is essential when we examine these arguments that we evaluate the impacts of globalization, more specifically in Canada. Therefore, in order to have a better understanding we will first discuss what exactly is globalization followed by an analysis of the question, does globalization promote democracy? Third, it is equally important to discuss globalization and anti-globalization in Canada. More specifically, in the last two sections of the paper we will pay particular at |
