Religion and ConfucianismReligion in its existence inherently acts as a solution and in order for a solution to exist, a problem must occur first. In religion we call this the 'human condition' and it represents the unique characteristics that accompany the act of being human. The idea of the human condition is not something that can be specifically identified in every religion, but rather interpreted. In Confucianism and Taoism life is stated as innately beautiful and all the means for spiritual advancement are encompassed within human beings at birth, but the issue now becomes: if perfection is inherent then where does the problem lie? The problem with the human condition in Confucianism and Taoism lies in people's inability to access the perfection that surrounds t |

The Capital Punishment ControversyControversy surrounds many fundamental components of the American nation, one of them being capital punishment, otherwise known as the death penalty. Advocators of the death penalty believe that such consequences will reduce crime, while opponents to the death penalty feel that such a sentence is too drastic within society. If the death penalty is removed, then criminals will feel that the gains of an illegal action will outweigh the risk of consequences. In turn, this lack of fear will result in an abundance of horrific crimes. (PC) The death penalty should be implemented in order to punish certain severe criminals. First of all, the death penalty sentence should continue to be a part of the American legal system due to the fact that it was instated in the nation's original set of laws and continues to be appropriate as a consequence for certain crimes. Considering the Constitution in its entirety has remained relevant since its formation, America should continue to abide by its la |

Pushing Yourself Too HardMost of us want to be skinny, beautiful, and sexy, so sometimes we use different products from TV commercials, magazine ads, billboards etc.., but most of the time they do not yield the same results in real life, yet we do crazy things just to be accepted by others. According to Rachel Drevno in her essay "Pop Culture Is Destroying True Beauty", we live in a society that supposedly prides itself on individuality and uniqueness but then turns around and promotes a popular culture that relies heavily on uniformity and a set of ideal standards. I agree with her because, there should be no standards to follow. If we continue to see beauty as a carbon copy of our cultural ideal, the true meaning of beauty will die. Drevno says that, "Every year men and women spend absurd amounts of money on products that promise to make them beautiful, skinny, or physically enhanced in some way"(69). Some of these have some damaging effects on our body instead of making them skinny and |

Jazz, Ragtime and BluesNew Orleans was a thriving cosmopolitan that cultivated blending cultures to form a merged community. The musicians that arose each developed their own essence to add to the growing culture and fostered the musical scene to what it is today. Through this development, jazz was born and brought out unique musicians who expanded the genre towards regions that further refined the sound. Before that refinement could be made, ragtime and blues collided to produce jazz. These two genres not only influenced how jazz sounded, but also how jazz was played. Ragtime, a syncopated and cheerful form, invoked loose dancing styles from its piano centered music. In contrast, blues conjured emotions connected to the past and brought a more soulful sound to listeners. Despite the differences between ragtime and the blues in their origins, forms, and desired purposes, these differences were vital in establishing the foundation of jazz. Ragtime and the blues emerged from different spectrums in African Am |

The Need for Self-ConfidenceTo psychology, self-confidence is a belief in oneself. It becomes a mental attitude a person takes on of trusting or relying on themselves. Confidence is sometimes equated with freedom from doubt; however, confidence is needed usually when the outcome is uncertain. True confidence can then be defined as an actual feeling of comfort with some uncertainty regardless of what the outcome will be of a situation. Self-confidence is often linked with self-esteem. Artists such as Katy Perry, have a way of expressing ideas, such as self-confidence chosen in their songs. While both deal with confidence, "Firework" explains how to become confident while "Roar" gives a personal experience of self-confidence. In "Firework", Perry demonstrates how the person is trying to express themselves, but the other people do not care about it. An example in the song is, "Do you ever fee |

Stress and the Human BodyWhat is stress? How does it affect the body? Stress is your body's response to certain situations. Stress is subjective. Something that may be stressful for one person -- speaking in public, for instance -- may not be stressful for someone else. Not all stresses are "bad" either. Graduating from college, for example, may be considered a "good" stress. (The Healthline Editorial Team, 201, May 01). Stress is a part of everyday life; it's brought on by harsh situations or perceived threats that carry feelings of anxiety, anger, excitement, or sadness. Stress is considered to be anything that challenges the body's ability to function in its usual fashion. The body has developed complex and associated responses that are designed to keep hurtful or dangerous situations brought on by stress and to keep it in balance. When most of us think of stress we think about is the negative effects, but there are both negative and positive effects of stress. Stress affects us in a variety of ways from de |

The Importance of Gun Control LawsDo you think that carrying guns is a human right or it is just excessive? Should everybody be able to posses guns to protect themselves? In these days, we face a serious and dangerous crisis that affects people's attitudes negatively. This crisis is gun violence. No one can deny how easy it is to kill people with guns; even kids can do that. Nowadays, people live with concern and anxiety from the violent events and brutal situations that have happened recently in the United States of America. For instance, the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School caused by Adam Lanza almost one year ago and the movie theater shootings in Aurora, Colorado are examples. Such things wouldn't occur if our government were a bit more careful about gun ownership. To solve this problem the government should have certain laws that control guns: One would control magazine size; another would require background checks on who is eligible for gun ownership; and there would be certain restrictions regarding what |

Saving a Life Through Organ DonationImagine that a family member has fallen seriously ill. They have a grave liver disease, and the doctors tell them the only way to truly survive is to have a liver transplant. When they hear this they instantly think of all that they will miss and all the heartache it would cause; not watching their daughter grow up, their spouse having to bury them, their parents losing their youngest child, the list goes on. Having the transplant would change their life forever. Due to needing a deceased donor for a liver and the lack of donors, they are on the transplant list for a year and a half. With each passing day, their condition becomes worse and worse. Finally one summer day, they receive the call that a liver has become available for them. They arrive at the hospital as soon as they hear the news and a few days later, they have a new liver. They are no longer in danger of dying because someone took the time to become an organ donor. Donating an organ can help to save the life of a relative or complete stranger. Becoming an organ donor is something that everyone should do. Today there are approximately 121,272 people who are waiting for a transplant and ever |

Tending to the Needs of Juvenile OffendersAre we just warehousing our juvenile offenders, until they can be released to commit more serious crimes that will send them to an adult correction facility? "The rate of US juvenile incarcerations is 300 per 100,000 – the highest in the world" (Intent to Reform: Alternatives to Detention and Incarceration 2008). This is a sad revelation. While in incarceration, do they receive additional education? Do they receive counseling for aggression or anger management? Are we trying to rehabilitate them to be released into the community as productive citizens of society? I am afraid that the answers to these questions would be a weak affirmative. There are programs in place, but with overcrowding and lack of trained staff, they are ineffective and lacking in results. Reform and change for the juvenile detention system is necessary and mandatory. Moving ahead to non-incarceration and rehabilitation is the key to improvement. Throughout history, juvenile offenders were in |

Legalizing Gay MarriageImagine being told that you weren't allowed to marry the person you loved and being denied certain marital rights, for no reason other than because of your sexual orientation. Now imagine you are denied a job, or are fired from one you already have for the same reason. How would you feel? Heartbroken? Angry? Cheated? These are only a few of the many obstacles a person who is homosexual will face in their lifetime if we do not make a change. The legalization of gay marriage is crucial to the progression of the US as a whole, and as long as it remains illegal it will be something that negatively affects the lives of millions of Americans every single day. I would first like to briefly discuss a subject that is very common in debates involving homosexuality: homosexuality as a choice vs. being something someone is born with. According to Tom Head, author of an article supporting gay marriage, some people believe that homosexuality is something that one chooses, or can acquire based on t |

The Letter - Martin Luther King Jr.In the 1960's, segregation was running rampant in the south, especially in Birmingham, Alabama. In 1963, Birmingham was a heavily segregated city and it was full of white supremacy groups. A bit of an overstatement The hite supremacy groups often and killed members of the Negro population and chastised them by hanging demeaning segregational signs. After the prolonged discrimination against the Negro citizens, the black community banned together and began to hold peaceful demonstrations within the city. These demonstrations made many members of the community uncomfortable, and others just objected their tactics. As a direct response, the Eight White Clergymen wrote "A Call For Unity," urging demonstrators to withdraw their support from these activities and to approach this issue through the courts. While in Birmingham for the demonstrations, Martin Luther King, Jr. was jailed and wrote "Letter from Birmingham Jail" to address the charges of the Clergymen. What are K |

Moment in a Novel: Wuthering HeightsIn Emily Bronte's "Wuthering Heights," one of the most important motifs is how nature versus nurture impacts love. In this scene from Wuthering Heights, we are first introduced to the complex and intriguing character of Catherine through Lockwood's observations of the room. Although very subtle, this scene highlights the role that nature versus nurture plays in love and how Catherine struggled to choose between Edgar and Heathcliff. Due to Catherine's corruption through nurture, Heathcliff was unwilling to forgive her and move on from the transgression she committed in the past. In the first part of the passage, we are introduced to the notion that Heathcliff has yet to get over Catherine and the pain she caused him by barring anyone from entering the room. To Heathcliff, the room represents a time when he and Catherine were 'rebellious' towards Hindley. The diary that Lockwood discovers offers an |

Joining the JROTC Junior Reserve Officer Training CorpsGrowing up in a family that has a dominant military background has influenced who I am as a person today. Back in Vietnam, my father was a veteran that helped serve the country he grew up in. The gruesome images of poverty and deprivation during war time had sparked his inner fire, thus, motivating him to further help the less fortunate lives of many others. My father would often tell me stories about his experiences during his service and the heroic sacrifices of many soldiers for their nation. It was those stories about the dedication and self-sacrifice of those real-life heroes, along with the fire of my father's ambition that motivated me to follow his footsteps of joining the military, specifically the United States Navy. Characterizations of the Dance CommunityThe dance community is a tribute to the art of movement. It is basically characterized by having creativity, passion, and the ability to perform movements that the human body can only do through comprehensive training. In general, the people who are part of this community are around the ages of 12 and older. Even though the training can initiate at an early age (6 years old), it is after the age of 12 when a person can professionally go into show business and its different techniques (Jazz, Contemporary, Ballet, Hip Hop, etc.) Each of the above techniques share common characteristics such as discipline. In order to become a professional dancer, many years of practice, hard work, and dedication is necessary. Dancers must give 101 % of their time and have a winner mentality in order to achieve their goals. Another characteristic that brings these different styles together is their love of music. Music must be their passion in order for them to be successful, as writers must love their l |

A Grandfather's LoveLove is a powerful emotion which gives people the strength to go to extremes for one another. The bonds shared between family members are strengthened by love and devotion. I feel that this is especially true with regard to my grandfather, who recently passed away. Papa's passing has made me realize how much he has done for me, and how much of a loving man he was. My mom has been a single mother since we were three years old. Our grandparents took care of us while our mother worked long hours as a nurse. My twin sister and I loved playing sports, and Papa was always our biggest fan. He used to take us to every basketball game, soccer game, and even our cheer competitions. He supported us through our wins and tough losses. In addition to attending all of our games, he also practiced w |

Social Media and World ActivismSocial Media has opened up the world to an extensive amount of knowledge that is easily accessible to anyone. Any question, concern, or source of entertainment that someone wants to access is readily available through the Internet. Social media sites such as Twitter, Facebook, and various online blogs, are famous for allowing people to connect with friends and family, but can also be used as resourceful methods for activism. Some examples of social media activism include the use of hashtags on Twitter and Facebook, pictures posted on various sites, and a way used to manipulate Google's search engine known as "Google Bombing". Social Media is an easy, effective way to start an activist movement anywhere in the world by allowing people to share beliefs and ideas to achieve a common goal. The Kony 2102, campaign is a prime example of how social media can be a powerful tool for activists. In 2012 an organization called Invisible Children Inc. released a short documentary on YouT |

Dr. Schlobotnik's Miracle Memory Device1. What evidence do you have that Dr. Schlobotnik's miracle memory device is based on pseudoscience? Pseudoscience is characterized by a complete lack of hands-on mechanisms of action for the object that's being studied. Even if we were to agree with some of the cases as facts, Dr. Schlobotnik's memory device shows no clear ideas of how these phenomena would work or how they could work. There is no scientific proof for the efficiency or vital principle of this device. When we take a look at what's going on inside the brain, we can see if there is anything that can be done by this device to help improve memory. Lets take a look; neurons cannot be simply activated by some electronic device. The way science clarifies the encoding of memory is by neural memory allocation-- a process that determines which neurons will specifically store a certain memory. Multiple neurons can be triggered by a given set of responses, but there is a precise mechanism that adjusts which neuron essentially goe |

Movie and Book - Flowers for AlgernonCharlie Gordon, a handicapped man that tried to change the world, I believe is a better story told from a book than seen as a movie. You could see Charlie's improvements in the progress reports while the movie had no way of showing them. All of the characters in the book seemed to be more complex while the movie kept the necessities. The book was able to show Charlie's emotional development while the movie had no ways of showing what was happening in his mind. In the book, Charlie could explain all of the flashbacks that happened. The movie skipped over these parts of the book. He was the main character of the movie but you could not hear his thoughts. When reading the book, Flowers for Algernon, you become Charlie Gordon. You read his thoughts as if they are yours. You would feel his pain and his sorrow. You could see how Charlie grew. Medicinal Plants and Their CultivationIntroduction Plants used as medical treatments for is a practice that transcends since the beginning of time. Ancient civilizations, such as the first with written records, indicate their use of plants and herbs for their healing properties. Indian and African cultures are widely known for their use of plants for medicinal purposes. Actually the use of plants to cure and treat diseases and illnesses is far less common in industrialized civilizations, such as North America. This is not to say that the America's did not have their fair share of plant based medicinal practices. In fact the Native Americans that once greatly populated this land have been using plants and herbs for generations. In fact all civilizations can date back to a time where plants were used for medicine. The branch of science, ethnobotany, is the study of the relationship between plants and people. This branch is not as commonly studied as others however, the topic of the relevance of people to plant life is still |

Donald Trump and Warren BuffetThere are two kinds of people: the ones that you want to look up to and the ones you do not. Some of the rich influential people are born wealthy while others work hard for what they have. We are living in a world were money is everything, therefore, if you have money you have power. Some use this power for good while others take advantage to keep gaining power. As an example we are going to se how to powerful men grew up, built their empire, and gave back to the community. In this case, we are going to be looking on how Warren Buffett uses his power for good and Donald Trump takes advantage of it. We can tell many things about a person by the way they grew up. Both Warren Buffet and Donald Trump were lucky enough to be raised in an economically stable family and obtained a high education by attending college. However, they both took different paths. Warren Buffet started saving money at a very young age. At 14, he started delivering newspaper and by high school he was the only student who owned a tenant farm and earned more money than his teachers. Therefore, we can see |
