Piet Cornelis Mondrain - Master PainterPieter Cornelis Mondrian was born in 1872 in Amersfoort a small town in the Netherlands near Amsterdam. Mondrian's father worked at an elementary school as a headmaster and his uncle was a successful painter. The environment that he was surrounded by helped him grow an interest towards painting, although his father wanted him to get a degree in teaching. Since his passion was to be a painter, he ended up becoming an art teacher. While he was teaching his desire to become a painter did not lessen because of this his uncle helped Mondrian pay to study at the National Academy of Art in Amsterdam in 1892. His first paintings are shown to be of landscapes in a calming nature, painted in dark greens, grays, and pinks. In 1911 Mondrian saw his first exhibit that affected his styles immensely and also inspired him. The exhibit had paintings done by Pablo Picasso and other Cubist |

The Effects of Chewing GumDid you know gum was originally made out of tree bark? So how did gum change so much overtime? They added artificial sweeteners and other unhealthy ingredients. These unhealthy ingredients can cause GI problems, which is one reason why gum should not be chewed at school. Another issue with gum chewing is because it can trigger TMJ problems. My final reason why gum should not be chewed at school is that it can trick the brain. The first and main reason why gum shouldn't be chewed at school is it can trigger TMJ. I think this is a significant reason because TMJ or temporomandibular joint disorder can cause cramps and pain in the jaws. Don Atkins, DDS, a dentist says gum chewing can lead to over use of the jaw's muscles, which c |

Mexico's Democratic ConsolidationThe Mexican United States is a democracy. As demanded by Juan Linz and Alfred Stepan, Mexico is an existing state, it holds free and contested elections, and its leaders rule as democratically as they are demanded to by the Mexican Constitution. Mexico's transition to democracy was best demonstrated in the election of 2000 as the people voted out a 70 year-long semi-authoritarian rule by the Institutional Revolutionary Party. Having specified threshold for democracy and determining Mexico meets its criteria, the nest step of determining the status of the regime's consolidation can be considered. Up until the election of 2000, Mexico was not yet a consolidated democracy. However, when Vicente Fox of the National Action Party (PAN) was elected President of Mexico, it marked the end of 71 years of continuous rule of the executive branch by the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). This event finalized a long process of regime change from one-party authoritarian rule to a democracy in |

Civil Rights and Women's LiberationThe Civil Rights Movement in the American South in the 1950s and 1960s was one of the most significant and successful social movements in the 20th century. Millions of African Americans fought for achieving racial equality before the law. A major factor in the success of the movement was the strategy of protesting against discrimination without using violence as an alternative to armed uprising. This movement's success inspired many other social movements, including the Women's Liberation Movement. This paper explores the connection between the Civil Rights Movement and the events of the Women's Liberation Movement, occurring in the 1970s-1980s. The latter of the two was the collective social struggle for equality that aimed to eliminate forms of oppression based on gender and to free women from male supremacy. Throughout the paper, the Civil Rights Movement will be regarded as the precedent that opened the doors for the Women's Liberation Movement. It will be discussed that the Civil |

Assumptions and StereotypesAssumptions are things that we hear, see, think, or believe are true about people and situations that we often have little or no evidence to back up. We make assumptions every day of our lives. For example, as a driver on the roads, we assume that other drivers will obey the traffic signals and laws as we are, but that doesn't always happen. When I go through an intersection with a green light, I assume that the traffic perpendicular to me will stop at its red light. Another example of assumptions can be made in relationships. If our partner is quiet and not talking to us, we assume they're mad or upset. This is not always the case, just because they were upset one time and didn't tell you, doesn't mean they're mad every single time they have nothing to say. Assumptions can be made by simply hearing someone's name or reading it on a piece of paper. This is almost worse than the saying "Don't judge a book by its cover" because you may not have even met this person before. Its ridicul |

A Light Beyond Violet - Ultraviolet RaysA research was conducted to find out about ultraviolet rays. The focus of this was to answer the question: What are ultraviolet rays? In 1801, Johann Ritter conducted an experiment, to prove there was a light beyond violet. Because photographic paper would turn black faster in blue light rather than red light, he exposed the photographic paper to light beyond violet. The paper turned black which proved the existence of light beyond violet-ultraviolet light. A light beyond the visible spectrum. Ultraviolet rays are the sunlight that reaches Earth. There are two types of ultraviolet rays UV-A and UV-B. UV-A is the sunlight that comes down in long waves. UV-A rays dig deep into the dermis, the thickest layer of skin and can cause a change in skin texture, |

Poetry Analysis - Alzheimer's by Kelly CherryKelly Cherry's "Alzheimer's" explores the life of a man before and during the onset of his suffering from the disease. The poem begins with a tone that one could see as harsh and insensitive. This insensitivity is proven when the poet describes the man as "a crazy old man back from the hospital, his mind rattling like the suitcase, swinging from his hand that contains shaving cream, a piggy bank, a book he sometimes pretends to read" (1-5). In the beginning of the poem, he has just returned from the hospital. The poem suggests that, in his prime, that he was a spritely young man. He had a general zest for life that withered away as the poem continued. He enjoyed gardening and dancing with his wife. He remembers his youth as if it were yesterday (15-20). However, he can not recall the |

The Definition of FamilyIntroduction Defining family is difficult because many different people have many different ideas on what a family is, and what a family is not. There is no right or wrong answer and no set definition. It is all about others perspectives. Family is defined by Kaakinen and colleagues as "two or more individuals who depend on one another for emotional, physical, and economic support" (Kaakinen et al., 2015, p. 5). As required, I have attached three photos found in the appendices of this paper which show my perspective on family. The first photo, found in appendix A, is myself, my fiancé, and our two children. The second photo, found in appendix B, is myself and a few of my closest friends. The third photo, found in appendix C, is various words that represent the people I consider family. Each of these photos represent my definition of family because these are all the people who love me, support me, and I know I can always count on. When I think of the word family, I thi |

The Life of Winston ChurchillThere are few ever to walk the face of this Earth that had an impact on the world we live in quite like Winston Churchill. His stand against Hitler during World War II and strong friendship with Franklin Delano Roosevelt are what many Americans know him for today, but he was a fascinating man. Hopefully, after you read this paper, you'll have a much wider understanding of the type of man he was and what he stood for. Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill was born on November 30, 1874, in the Blenheim Palace in Woodstock, England. His father was Randolph Churchill, statesmen from England and his mother, Jeanette "Jennie" Churchill was from the United States. His grandmother, Frances, the Duchess of Marlborough, or as the book refers to her "Duchess Fanny" (Manchester, 111), at first did not approve of Winston's parents and the birth of young Winston, but once Fanny laid her eyes on him, she was in love with young Winston from first sight. She saw that the baby was car |

The Familiar and Unfamiliar - Poems of Sylvia Plath'You do not do, you do not do/ Any more, black shoe/ In which I have lived like a foot/ For thirty years, poor and white, Barely daring to breath or Achoo', is the opening description provided by Plath of her circumstances in 'Daddy'. In this opening stanza, the familiar image of a foot inside a shoe forms the basis of a psychological exploration of the subjugation of women to the power of dominant masculinity. Plath, representative of women, is forced into submission by the notion of her deceased father, the black shoe in this instance. This commonplace simile, combined with the diction of 'black shoe; and 'poor and white' contributes to sense of suffocation in the poems opening stanza. The 'poor', 'white' foot, representative of Plath has been overwhelmed by the powerful 'black shoe,' a masculine image explored in greater detail throughout the poem. Familiar sounds and structures are used in Daddy's opening to contribute to a sense of victimi |

Speech on the Gerard Baden-Clay Murder TrialGood morning Ladies and Gentleman. Today, I want to discuss with you the Gerard Baden-Clay murder trial and how it has revealed a great injustice within the Australian legal system. On the april 20th, 2012 Allison Baden-Clay was reported missing by Queensland Federal police, after her husband, gerard contacted police. 10 days after her disappearance a body so badly decomposed was found in a creek by two kayakers just several kilometers from the baden-clay home. After countless hours of interviews and overwhelming evidence, the Queensland Federal police charged gerard with murder of his wife Allison. Five weeks, hundreds and thousands of taxpayers money later, the jury came to a verdict that Gerard did infact murder his wife, after that decision was made he then asked for the decision to be looked over. However there was not another trial this time, instead the judge ruled that Gerard was guilty of manslaughter. Manslaughter is a five year sentence, two years of which he has already served. So is the au |

The Importance Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP)"Everything you do needs energy to drive it, whether it is running up a flight of stairs, eating breakfast, fighting off an infection, or even just producing new proteins for hair growth. The energy currency used by all cells from bacteria to man is adenosine triphosphate (ATP)." (3)Humans use a staggering amount of in day to day life. It has been estimated that around 1kg is used in the human body every hour and is rapidly recycled, this is shown by the fact that at any one time only 5g of ATP is present in the body. ATP is a vital source of energy in biology. Used in both plants and animals it is vital in actions ranging from photosynthesis to muscle contraction.(5) "The energy is used for all the processes which keep the organism alive". It is essential in all forms of life One of the most important uses of ATP is in Photosynthesis. It plays a role in both stages of this action, the light dependent and the light independent reaction. it is created in the dependent stage before being used in the light independent stage . It is in this stage where the energy released by it along with the reduced NADP is used to convert glycerate 3 phosphate to carbohydra |

Balances of Leadership in the Soviet UnionDiffering visions and leadership conflict, overall played an important factor but only to a small extent, in shaping the history of the Soviet Union. During the first six months, following the Bolshevik Revolution, they led with one vision and one leader, Lenin, despite some minor debates, and followed through the vital civil war period, where survival was she only goal. However, the NEP, led to debate within the party with the power struggle breaking down the party. Once Stalin was in control, part ideology and leadership all came under his leadership. Following the successful revolution, the first 6 months of power was to a small extent shaped by differing visions and leadership conflict, with Russia following one ideology, led by an undisputed Lenin whilst conflict arousing from the peace treaty. Since pre-revolution, the Bolsheviks had direction and a leader, provided through the April theses and was implemented through populist policies including, the land decree and workers' r |

The Ethical Crossroads of UtilitarianismImagine you are on a runaway trolley and you are on the main set of tracks that will hit five construction workers. Now, imagine you can pull a lever on the trolley so it takes the side set of tracks instead where it will only hit one construction worker. Your options are to A.) do nothing and let the trolley kill the five workers on the main track or B.) pull the lever, leading the trolley onto the side tracks, only killing one worker. What should you do? The utilitarian choice is clear – pull the lever. Killing one person instead of five would be the more ethical option and is the option with the greatest utility – it brings the greatest amount of happiness to the greatest number of people. However, one could make the argument that it is also morally wrong to pull the lever because the situation in itself is morally wrong and he or she would feel as though they were partially responsible for the worker's death. On the other hand, by that reasoning, simply being present du |

A Rose for Emily - Compare and Contrast"A Rose for Emily," by William Faulkner, is a short story telling the dark and decaying life of Emily Grierson. The story keeps the reader's attention by having a very suspenseful style of writing. It also portrays how life might have been for many "higher class" individuals in the south during that era, as drastic changes began to take place. Faulkner's writing was turned into a short film in the 1980s. The film portrays the imagery written in the short story very accurately, but also has a few subtle differences. Emily's personality disorders are evident throughout the story, leaving readers curious what goes on behind her closed doors. As mentioned earlier, Faulkner's short story was later turned into a short film in the 1980s. The film gives more incite on Emily's life before her father passes away. It gives a better idea of how Emily got her stubborn personality. Her father is portrayed as an arrogant man who believes no man is quite good enough for his precious daughte |

Moral Hypocrisy in Maggie: A Girl of the StreetsMorals are something that we all have. They are our opinions on the world and they define who we are as people. Not everyone has the same moral code, and not everyone follows their own at times. However, we judge others based on how they act on their moral code. In Stephen Crane's Maggie: A Girl of the Streets, the characters go against their morals all the time, and they publically side with the common beliefs. In his novel, Crane delivers the theme of moral hypocrisy through irony and characterization. Maggie's family publicly shames her for acts they think she has committed when they commit acts far worse than her own. Mary Johnson is a drunken woman who wants nothing more than to draw all attention to herself. She physically and emotionally abuses her children, yet it is her daughter who has "gone to the devil" simply by going out on a date with a man. Mary tells her daughter, "Yer, a disgrace tyre people. Creative Writing on DiscoveryAt a young age I was never fond of the ocean. I was in fact terrified of what laid beneath the depths of the ocean. The salty water always stung my eyes and I couldn't stand being dumped by a wave. Through my younger years i always thought that I would become a professional football player. At the age of ten my parents took me on a holiday to the Maldives. Every morning we would wake up with the beach at our front door. The sun would shine directly in my eyes and briefly blind me. After a few days of convincing I finally agreed to try and overcome my hatred for the ocean. My father rented out a Malibu surfboard and as much as I didn't want to admit it, I had fun. For the rest of the holiday all I wanted to do was surf, it was as if the surfboard acted as a shield and kept me safe from all my fears of the ocean. Once we got back from the Maldives my father bought me a surfboard. It was extremely old, with plenty of dints and scratches, for all I know he probably picked it up from the |

Emerson, Thoreau and TranscendentalismThinkers Emerson and Thoreau were two critical thinkers who valued nature as a big part of their life. In their works, they have shared their experience from their life in society. For this reason, Emerson and Thoreau argue that solitude and society are the most focused topic in their works because of Solitude's ability to give you more freedom instead of living under the rights of unjust laws and Society exploiting you to opportunities with education and grammar. Thoreau argues that living in solitude gives you more freedom instead of living under rights of unjust laws. When living in solitude, you have total freedom to evaluate your well-being and making necessary changes to errors when needed. When in society, you must adjust from your personal nature to the regulations and laws the governments has set. So why live according to laws set by the government. Thoreau says, "Unjust laws exist; shall we be content to obey them, or shall we endeavor to amend them, and obey them until we have succeeded, or shall we transgress them at once? |

Napoleon- The Most Influential PersonBorn in Corsica, Napoleon trained as an artillery officer in mainland France. After a few years he rose to prominence under the First French Republic. He distinguished himself as a military commander fighting in Italy. In 1799, Bonaparte staged a coup d'état and ended up in the position of First Consul; and five years later he crowned himself Emperor of the French. In the first decade of the Nineteenth Century, he turned the armies of the French Empire against every major European power and dominated continental Europe, through a series of military victories – epitomised in battles such as Austerlitz. He maintained France's sphere of influence by the formation of extensive alliances and the appointment of close friends and family members to rule other European countries as elite French states. It appeared that with Napoleon's tactical genius the French were invincible. And this proved to be true as they progressed to win a series of important military victories. Little |

Geothermal EnergyAlternative energy is energy generated in ways where it does not deplete natural resources or use fossil fuels. The common method of producing energy for the human benefit is burning fossil fuels. Burning fossil fuels emits very high levels of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases which damage our home, Earth. If we continue to burn these fuels to produce energy, the structure and surface of Earth will change drastically and be permanently damaged. To prevent these disasters from occurring, or at least to decrease the risk of these disasters occurring, we need to stop using energy sources that emit harmful gases and harm us and our planet, and use alternative energy. One type of alternative energy that should be used is Geothermal energy. Geothermal energy is energy that is stored and generated within the Earth, and it determines the temperature of the matter while originating from the Earth's core. As of 2012, only 0.41% of the electricity generated in the United States came from Geothermal energy. The reason why we should switch to using Geothermal energy to |

Abortion: Supporting and Opposing"Is abortion ethical?" The question that had everyone talking about morality, abortion became a hot topic in 1973 with the case Roe v. Wade. Action groups were formed and the women's rights movement was changed drastically. People everywhere were divided into sides; pro-choice or pro-life. Regardless of the side chosen, the issue demands attention. Controversy emerges from this discussion, some believe that abortion is an ethical procedure and does no harm, while others believe that abortion is harmful and morally wrong. The arguments for this discussion must both be considered in order to reach a valid conclusion. On one side of the abortion debate are those who believe that abortion is not an issue that necessarily needs to be discussed. They believe abortion is ethical on the basis that a woman's right to choose is to be valued and respected. Abortion is defined as the purposeful termination of a pregnancy that is performed (in most cases) during the first 28 weeks of p |
