Parenting Styles of Atticus and Alexandra Finch

Many people claim that there is no such thing as a perfect parent. Alexandra Finch is a character in Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird that can be described as old fashioned and traditional as she believes whites are superior to blacks and ladies should be feminine. Atticus Finch on the other hand, is quite modernized and accepting of others as he treats every person with respect and does not lack compassion. Though Atticus and Alexandra Finch were born and raised of the same mother and father, they are complete opposites in their personalities which plays a key role in their diverse parenting style. Firstly, Atticus and Alexandra Finch both parent the children in a special way. They both believe they are helping them succeed to the best of their ability but that may not always be the case. Alexandra Finch is racist and prejudice. Through her grandson Francis we learn that she calls her ow

Othello: Notes and Study Guide

1. Iago's speeches indicate his true malicious intentions and the true nature of the reasons for his relationships with the other characters. He is manipulative and is a wicked person with the facade of a friend. He is motivated by his own lust for power and selfishness. 2. Iago is a manipulative villain. Much like Richard II and Don John, his primary goal is power. He manipulated the others around him in order to amass influence and manipulating them to fuel his own selfish desires. 3. Iago's speeches make the other characters appear to be fools only falling for his manipulation. Iago is such a masterful manipulator due to his ability to convince others that they are right and telling them exactly what they want to hear. For example, he falsely confirms Othello's suspicions of Desdemona's infidelity and weakens their relationship as a result. 4. In the beginning of the play, we see Othello as a man who is somewhat rejected by the Venetians based on his background and race. He is exceptional due to the fact that he is highly ranked as a warrior and commands respect from his lieutenants. However, he still sees himself as different from the Venetians although he has become a par

All Things Wise and Wonderful by James Herriot

James Herriot's book "All Things Wise and Wonderful," is a collection of his memories as a vet in the English countryside. As he is serving in the Air Force, he is having these recollections. He is a good vet with good virtues and good humor, and he really shows the connection between man and animals. It also shows connections between man and man, because of different characters he mentions and how he sees them. Herriot's book is almost like a bibliography of his life because it gives us an insight of what he went through in his head, preferences, in life, and how the time he lived in really shaped who he was. James Alfred Wight, known as the pen name of James Herriot, was born on 3 October 1916, in Sunderland, County Durham, England, to James and Hannah Bell Wight. He moved to Glasgow, Scotland, where he took work as both a ship plater and pianist for a local cinema, while Hannah was a singer, as well as a dressmaker. The couple had two children, James Alexander, born 13 F

The Atlantic Slave Trade in Brazil

Over the period of the Atlantic Slave Trade, some 12.5 million slaves had been shipped from Africa, and 10.7 million arrived in the Americas. An estimated number of 4.5 million slaves disembarked in Brazil, the largest slave population in the world (Slave Trade Database). Brazil was the last country in the Western world to abolish slavery. Slavery lasted so long in Brazil because it became central the economy with the production of sugar, there were racial ideologies about slaves procreating, Europeans believed Africans were constructed for this kind of work, and they believed it was benefitting the colony as a whole in terms of agriculture and industry (Conrad 428). In spite of this, slaves used diverse tactics to resist the oppression they faced by forming communities called quilombos, attempting to seize power in armed uprisings, and resisting European culture. Europeans were against slavery for numerous reasons, but the main one being that the country's p

The Legalization of Same Sex Marriage

In discussions of "Should Gay Marriage be Legal", one controversial issue has been that, marriage is defined us a union between a man and a woman. On the one hand, the church argues that the Bible even states marriage is a union between a man and woman. On the other hand, the Supreme Court contends in 'Loving V. Virginia' that marriage is "one of the basic civil rights of man" (US Supreme Court, Loving v. Virginia, law.cornell.edu, June 12, 1967, Sept 16th 2014.) My view is that all peoples should be allowed to marry regardless of whether it is man/woman, man/man, woman/woman or transgender. We should not base our argument in opposition on laws passed nearly 50 years ago, or a book written thousands of years ago. We are in a new era and people should be able to make choices based on their own beliefs, wants and desires, without The Radical Right, The Church or anyone else telling them what to do. While the opposing side is certainly entitled to their opinion,

20th Century South African Art

The South African Society of Artists was initially founded in May 08, 1897, but was somehow buried and disappeared during and after the South African war, which took place in 1899. A reemergence of the establishment was brought about in 1902, which is now reasoned to be the appropriate official date for the Society. The South African Society for Artists was created exclusively to serve artists that were practicing their craft in South Africa, and was actually the first kind of organization to so in South Africa. Giving off a feeling of a close community rather than a divided and unstable group, the SASA made sure to bring the South African art form and its artists to national recognition. Popular members of the age consisted of Nerine Desmond, Robert Gwelo Goodman, Ivan Mitford Barberton, Nita Spilhaus, Desiree Picton Seymor, and Anton van Wouw, all in relation with the SASA. The SASA was indeed crucial in the beginning of the South African National Gallery, during which it promoted a

Feminism, Positivism, and Radical Victimology

Victimology refers to the scientific study of the "extent, nature and causes of criminal victimisation, it's consequences for the persons involved and the reactions thereto by society". (World Society of Victimology, cited in Goodey 2005, pp.10) Various perspectives of victimology have been put forward since the mid-twentieth century when it first emerged. The main perspectives include; feminist victimology, positivist victimology, radical victimology, and critical victimology. Each of these perspectives offer different theories of victims and crime, some more controversial than others. Nevertheless, this essay will critically appraise what feminist victimology has offered to the discipline, and further go on to discuss what it has offered that positivist and radical victimologies have not. Founded in the 1970s and significantly influenced by radical feminism, feminist victimology primarily recognises victimisation as the product of unequal power relations, sexism, and o

Bacterium - Treponema Pallidum

Treponema Pallidum is a bacterium called a spirochete. This was meaning that it is in a corkscrew shape. This happens because of the axial filaments of the flagellum which grow lengthwise along the bacteria. This is possible because spirochetes have an outer membrane and an inner membrane. The axial filaments grow between the two membranes causing it to rotate in a corkscrew motion. The corkscrew shape allows it to "swim" or move through your bodily tissues, being very harmful to one's body. Treponema Pallidum grows anywhere between six and twenty nanometers. For Treoponema Pallidum to grow, the ideal temperature should be between 30 and 37 degrees Celsius. Treponema Pallidum also requires a neutral pH environment. Treponema Pallidum is considered to be a gram-negative bacterium. Because of how thin it is, it is difficult to classify its gram stain (1). The disease was first recognized in 1494/1495 in Europe. There are two hypotheses as to why it showed up in Europe. The

China and Government Intrusion

On January 1, 2016, China's citizens got news most have been waiting to hear. "The state advocates that one couple shall be allowed to have two children," according to the newly revised Law on Population and Family Planning. Meaning, all couples are granted rights to bore two children without the consequence of fines or penalties such as forced abortion. Many of China's citizens were astounded with the news of now being able to have two children. Meanwhile, some new they were financially unable to provide for a second child. The government should not be able to regulate the family size, force abortions or sterilization among citizens, or require citizens pay a fine of $12,000 or higher after meeting the two-child mark. China's government should not be able to regulate some children within a married couple. The reason seems clear. The population is beginning to age, and jobs are shrinking. The New York times says, "China's working-age population, those 15 to 64, grew by at least 1

Childhood Obesity - Who's to Blame?

I see advertisements everywhere about fast food and that's not funny whatsoever. Every corner you turn there will be a fast food advertisement. The fast food companies advertise their products to children by putting their products in TV commercials and implementing them in TV shows. The possible negative health effects of eating fast food is getting diabetes, heart disease, andor even death. In the article "If You Pitch It, They Will Eat" by David Barboza talks about how fast food places market their products to people and how much they spend every year on marketing as well how its peoples fault for eating the product they are promoting. In "Its portion distortion makes america fat" By Shannon Brownlee talks which means that the more you eat at fast food places, the more obese you will become. Some kids are suing fast food companies, because they feel that they are making them fat. Fast food companies are havi

Diffusion and Osmosis Lab

I. Introduction II. Materials and Methods III. Results IV. Discussion and Conclusion Introduction: Background Information In the permeability lab, I gained an understanding of the principles of diffusion and osmosis. Diffusion is the net movement of molecules from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. Osmosis is the diffusion of water through a selectively permeable membrane from a region in which it is highly concentrated to an area that has a lower concentration. Selectively permeable membranes allow molecules with the correct molecular size to diffuse through; some molecules do not have the molecular structure that allows them to flow through. Osmosis is important because it helps distribute nutrients and discharge metabolic waste products. Cells use diffusion in order to perform simple tasks. Without osmosis, organelles would have a hard time carrying out duties; such like distribution of minerals and releasing waste. Molecules of all matter are in contin

The American Civil War

The American Civil War, widely known in the United States as simply the Civil War as well as other names, was a civil war fought from 1861 to 1865 to determine the survival of the Union or independence for the Confederacy. Among the 34 states in January 1861, seven Southern slave states individually declared their secession from the United States and formed the Confederate States of America. The Confederacy, often simply called the South, grew to include eleven states, and although they claimed thirteen states and additional western territories, the Confederacy was never diplomatically recognized by any foreign country. The states that remained loyal and did not declare secession were known as the Union or the North. The war had its origin in the factious issue of slavery, especially the extension of slavery into the western territories. After four years of combat, which had left around 750,000 Americans, Union and Confederate, dead and had destroyed much of the South's infrastructure,

Film Review: The Mona Lisa Curse

Robert Hughes is an art critic who has been around long enough to see the drastic changes in the art world. He has seen art go from something to appreciate and to mean to a popularized lucrative business. According to Hughes, this change began around the time the most famous painting in the world, the Mona Lisa, made it's way around the United States. In the film "The Mona Lisa Curse," talks with his friend Robert Rauschenberg, art collectors, and museum curators about the state of the art world today. There were two comments in "The Mona Lisa Curse" that particularly stuck out to me. One of Hughes' issues with the world of art is how little money the artists are making and how much collectors are reselling the artwork for. "We support this artist by promoting them by buying them at auction, by buying them priv

Global Business Cultural Analysis

Abstract This paper gives an opportunity to take a deeper look into a Global Business Cultural Analysis of the nation of Ireland. In writing this paper, there are four research areas and questions were analyzed: The major elements and dimensions of culture in Ireland: how these elements and dimensions are integrated by locals conducting business in the nation of Ireland, a comparison of culture and business of Ireland and the United States, and lastly implications for US businesses that wish to conduct business in Ireland. Introduction Ireland is the third largest island in Europe and the twentieth largest in the world. Ireland is situated in the Atlantic Ocean and separated from Great Britain by the Irish Sea. The Irish are the citizens living on the Island of Ireland. Their culture is not that big as many people believe. This is due to the prominent disagreements that are there among city and country people, between the Roman Catholics and the Protestants and also disagreements amon

Organized Crime in America

Organized crime in America began shortly after the immigration of Italians coming over to America during the 1880s and 1890s. In 1910, the number of Italian Americans was roughly half a million, and there simply weren't enough jobs for the influx of immigrants. The majority followed government and state laws, but gangs began to form all over New York - the largest becoming the mafia. The history channel has valuable evidence at the beginning of the mafia mainly in Brooklyn, New York. It originated as a consequence of the 18th amendment which banned the sale and manufacturing of alcohol in the United States. The mafia still remains in business today even with the government's plans to stop them such as the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act passed in 1970. The Lufthansa heist of 1979 was carried out by the Lucchese crime family and representatives of the Gambino family. Mrs. Clifford cites information on a mafia member by the name of Vincent Asaro - a fellow member of the Bonanno crime family. He was found not guilty of involvement i

Globalization and Economic Growth

Globalization is the trend toward greater economic, cultural, political, and technological interdependence among national institutions and economies. (Wild & Wild, 2014, pg. 7) Through this process, countries are given the benefits of reaching new countries and new markets and expanding their economy through the increase of production. By sending their product overseas, companies can reach untapped markets and generate new revenue for themselves. Because of this increased production and new surpluses of revenue, jobs are created, there is more opportunity for wealth for all people, and smaller countries that have uncommon resources can compete with larger companies on a global market. Through globalization, countries are gained access to a product they may not have access to in their domestic economy. For example, a country

The Fatal Effects of Blind Hatred

In Shakespeare's tragedy Romeo and Juliet, the plot focuses on the astounding and intense hatred between two prestigious families. The Montagues and Capulets have had a fierce family feud for generations and the reason for it has been lost and forgotten throughout the years. Being born into either of these families subsequently will be prone to manipulation and conditioned in such a way that eliminates rational thought. Shakespeare conveys that blind hatred is self destructive to oneself and others, that nothing good comes out of blind hatred, and leads to irrational, regretful behavior and in this case- tragedy. Shakespeare stresses in the play that neither family is sure of the cause or reason behind their seemingly never-ending rivalry, yet both sides fight to keep it alive. New additions to the family are conditioned to think the same way in that they must fight to hate the other side, eliminating rational thought to the process of rational thought thinking that there. Switzerland and the UK: Foreign Policy and Constituions

Since World War 2 the Nations of Switzerland and the United Kingdom have undergone many changes when it comes to security (foreign policy) and reforms of political institutions like civil rights and liberties in their Constitutions. Like many nations how they went about this and to what conclusions they came to on policy have many similarities and differences. It is these comparisons on a governmental action on a policy that will ultimately determine the fate of these nations and their roles in this highly interconnected world. With this, neither State can be objectively determined better or better off than the other in whole. Rather, it can be determined in these two categories that the active role that the United Kingdom plays in foreign affairs helps create a security needed for the nation when it comes to economic, world political power and respect, and national security is superior to that of Switzerland. While the foundation of a specific Constitution by the Swiss, according t

Stalin and the Halt of Collectivization: March 1930

A. Plan of the Investigation This essay aims to explore the question 'For what reasons did Stalin suspend forced collectivisation in 1930?' In order to understand what drove Stalin - a man known to be uncompromising and callous to his people's suffering - to temporarily backtrack on his policy of collectivisation, the essay analyses the conditions in which collectivisation was undertaken and how peasants reacted to it. The period investigated is from 1927, when mass collectivisation was brought to the table of the Communist party, to 1930 when Stalin called for a temporary halt of the policy. To reach a balanced conclusion, I have used a wide range of sources, including secondary sources consisting of works published by western scholars, and textbooks on Communist Russia, as well as primary sources from the prominence within the Soviet government of the time. The subjectivity of the sources was assessed, with the knowledge of the prevalence of propaganda diffusion by the Party ap

Lord of the Flies Analysis

"Lord of the Flies" by William Golding, is a novel about a group of young British boys who are stranded on an island after their plane is shot down. The group encounters countless problems during their duration of being stranded on the island, resulting in multiple disputes between the boys. Conflict is apparent all the way through the novel, whether it's being man versus man, man versus himself or man versus nature. One of the ways that Golding portrays conflict is through two of the main characters, Ralph, leader of the civilized group, and Jack, leader of the savage group. Golding reveals the growing tension between civilization and savagery in three key moments in the rising action: when the signal fire is let out and a boat passes by the island when Jack leaves the civilized group to create his own, and when the savages steal Piggy's specs to make their own fire. If these events did not happen, th

The Right to Die - Euthanasia

The Right to Die: The Legalization of Euthanasia Christiaan Barnard, a South African cardiac surgeon, once said, "I have never seen any nobility in a patient's thrashing around all night in a sweat-soaked bed, trying to escape from the pain that torments him day and night" (Walker 18). Should an individual with an illness and no hope of returning to a normal life be kept alive against his or her wishes? In the final phases of a disease, a patient's life quality may decline, and he or she may be awfully miserable until death. "The idea of euthanasia is the concept of respecting the sanctity of life so much that a quick death may be a better alternative than living in a devalued state" (Frost-Knappman 243). A survey was sent to students at Lexington High School, and an overwhelming amount of students agreed with the underlying principle of euthanasia: that people have the right to choose when they die (Berke v). "The Right to Die" movement is influenced by cases that l

Empathy in Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

In the novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, by Phillip K. Dick, empathy plays a large role. Throughout the novel, the plot revisits empathy and how humans and perhaps even androids are capable of it. The humans in the novel believe that lack of empathy is the main difference between the androids and themselves. The androids are thought to have no empathy or feeling towards anyone like humans do. However, with the release of the new Nexus 6 androids, which have the ability to learn empathy, the distinction between human's and android's empathy is difficult to understand. Knowing this, the question that comes to mind is whether or not androids can feel empathy or if it is purely a human trait. Empathy plays a role in Mercerism, which is the most popular religion after the war. It includes followers looking into a virtual reality device that allows the user to share an experience walking up a hill with Mercer himself while being bruised with stones and getting cuts that appear in

The Hardships of Education

In the narrative essay "Indian Education," Alexie brings us into the life of Junior Polatkin. In this narrative, Alexie talks about the hardships of Junior's life growing up as an outcast that differed from the community he lived in. In the narrative, Junior Polatkin struggles growing up because he was different from the rest of the white community he went to school with. Throughout his life, Alexie shows what it was like for him to grow up as an Indian and the diversity there was between him and his peers. It shows the reader how being an Indian affects many of the different aspects in his life and how it really has a toll on him. Due to his circumstances, there are many times in which the child acts out just because of how much the diversity affects him. For instance, in second grade Junior acted out: "For Halloween I drew a picture of her riding a broom with a scrawny cat on the back." The Bullying Epidemic

Bullying is a problem that is not specific to any age gender or color. Everyone has been bullied before in their lifetime, and most will admit it that it's not very fun. A few decades ago, bullying meant stealing someone's lunch money or spreading a stupid rumor around the school. Getting a note taped to your back was about the extent of it. Bullying back then was face to face, all the bullying went down in front of you. Now we have the beloved internet to do the bullying for us. Posting rumors, pictures, or insults about someone is easy to do over the internet. The internet masks you and turns you into something you are not, making bullying a much bigger problem than it used to be. Bullying these days should be made a big issue because the internet makes it is too easy, too hostile, and too brutally common. The current methods of bullying are extreme due to the internet. Before social media, bullies would spread a rumor about you to about fifty other people, the bully was capable of making fifty people taunt you an make you feel insecure. Fifty isnt all that bad if you compare it to the massive audience on the internet. Once a
