Steroid Use in Professional SportsSteroid use in professional sports has been an issue as early as the 1960's. Anabolic steroids work by helping the body's muscle cells produce more protein when athletes work out. This increases the muscles size, strength, improves tissue repair, endurance and allows the athlete to achieve heights heshe more than likely couldn't have reached naturally. There are many cons when it comes to steroid use and even more when we speak of performance enhancing drugs (PED) in professional sports. While I do not fully condone the use of enhancement drugs, I do believe that in certain circumstances the use of steroids is accepted and is a vital need in the entertainment that fans gain from super athletic players. Steroid use has been existent in professional sports and the Olympics for several decades. My biggest issue with steroid use is that it provides the athlete with an unfair advantage. In the past, when a majority of professional sports didn't have steroid policies I would not have had |

Gittany and the Equality of JusticeThe criminal justice system balances the rights of the victim, offender and society to a considerable extent. The case of R v Gittany (No 5) [2014] NSWSC 49 exemplifies this. This case involves the murder of Lisa Harnum by her fiancé Simon Gittany, who unloaded her off the balcony of their 15th-floor apartment in Sydney's CBD on 30 July 2011. The sentencing and bail imposed on Gittany show how offenders rights are balanced with those of the victim and society, and a fair trial has ensured the achievement of justice. Sentencing and the discretion exercised during this within the criminal justice system enable the competing interests of society, the victim and offender to be balanced. Gittany was charged with murder, in violation of The Crimes Act 1900 and sentenced to 26 years' imprisonment, with a non-parole period of 18 years according to The Crimes (Sentencing Procedures) Act 1999 (NSW). This has upheld Gittany's rights as, while he could have received life imprisonment, |

The film is about Ramón Sampedro who is quadriplegic after a diving accident that occurred when he was young and how he is trying to finish his battling after 30 years of being in this condition. Of course, Ramón cannot do anything on his own so he needs someone to help him do everything from bathing to eating to reading and writing. The movie focuses on his story and how he keeps up his journey to take his life and not live in the paralyzed state. The moral issue that this film presents is that of assisted suicide and autonomy. Throughout the movie, both sides of the argument of assisted suicide are presented and both sides are very set in their opinions. Despite that many people believe that the person who helps is a murderer, assisted suicide should be legal. If the patient wants to commit the act but cannot do it themselves they should be able to have someone to help them. |

The New Avenue for Reaching Unsaved YouthIn the early 1980's Christian Hip-Hop burst onto the scene, only to be greeted with rounds of laughter. It was referred to by some as the "nerdy little brother" of Hip-Hop. It was the epitome of pathetic and quickly became the butt of all the music related jokes. Look no further than artists such as Carman, who produced a song titled "The Resurrection Rap" in 1993. The beat was horrible and the lyrics, while they may have been trying to send a good message, are made impossible to listen to by both their cheesiness and the terrible rapping job. In the early 2000's, perhaps the most popular Christian Hip-Hop was being made by a man called KJ-52. He is most widely remembered for a song about his Mtn. Dew addiction. At that point in time, popular Christian artist TobyMac was just getting started, also doing Hip-Hop. He enjoyed some success as a rapper, but most of his recognition was limited to the Christian music industry. I actually regularly listened to TobyMac's Hi |

Criminal Justice and InjusticeThe Declaration of Independence states, "All men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights". But how much of this is true? Since the very beginning of the legal system in the United States, there has been inequality. Appearance has held such precedence for Americans. Now, with the threat of terrorists, many use racial stereotypes to determine who is accountable for our unsafe environment. Color remains a powerful instrument for discrimination in the criminal justice system. Discrimination has always been a large part of our society. But how can we overcome discrimination while the forces that protect us are one of the major causes? Aside from biased views, there are also many flaws that exist in our justice system, such as the appearance of racial inequality in court, problems of the public defender system such that it is based mostly on the socioeconomic concept, and the involvement of police abuse and misconduct. One of the main reason |

My Personal Story of WarQuestions. Society. Duty. It is my duty as a Korean, who lives in a country that values equality and freedom, to serve and protect my country. However, the thought of being away from my home, my family and friends, for so long frightens me. These very thoughts might as well condemn me to a life of seclusion and solitude. South Korea, the Republic of Korea, split from the North in 1945 after the Allies' victory in the 2nd World War. With the help of the United States and the Allies, the South experienced a great boost in their economy. Furthermore, the United State's belief in equality influenced South Korea's beliefs and helped to create a stable and clear foundation to build upon. While it continues to remain democratic, the North has dissimilar values and principles compared to its other half. It took on a communistic approach in their choice of government and the 1st leader of this undeveloped nation was Kim Jong-il. With technological advancement such as the nuclear bomb, the No |

Analysis of The Old Man and the SeaThe Old Man and the Sea Literary Essay In numerous literary works throughout history, heroes appear in a multitude of manifestations. They materialize as mythical heroic figures such as Hercules, a demigod endowed with strength beyond that of all mortals; they come forth as classical conquering commanders in the manner of Alexander the Great, defeating nations and building empires; they emerge as youthful superheroes such as Superman, saving entire worlds with extraordinary superpowers; and they are seen as ordinary people, with no divine assistance or physical prowess, overcoming seemingly everyday obstacles to bring positive change to their world. In Ernest Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea, the novel's aged protagonist, Santiago, a humble old man living a simple and uncomplicated life, may appear to be an unlikely hero when contrasted to other literary and historical heroic figures. However, while Santiago lacks some of the advantages and characteristics of more celebrated her |

Gratuities in Europe and the United StatesImagine being able to go out to dinner without the stress of configuring your server's tip at the end of the meal. Citizens of Japan are granted this privilege. Tipping is very uncommon there and can even be seen as an insult. This is a polar opposite view compared to how Americans treat gratuity. In the United States the tip percentage given reflects how well you believe the waiter or waitress has performed, the quality of the food, and your dining experience overall. The difference with these two systems is, restaurants that don't encourage tipping have a service charge included with the meal price, so that there is still money being made and everyone pays the same price for each meal. In most American restaurants where tipping is expected, meal prices are lower and tipping is optional. This leaves the amount of money servers make up to the generosity of their customers. This controversial topic effects me personally because both jobs I have worked since the age of sixteen have bee |

They both have a lot of issues with each other. Desiree and Armand start out to be true lovers, but at the end race breaks up their romance. He comes from a family that is well known, and he uses his family name as another way to feel like king besides owning slaves. His pride comes first before his family because he feels he has to protect the name of the family and history at all cost. He did not want anything to destroy who and what he is which was a well known slave owner. Armand tells |

Michael Pollan's Eat Food: Food DefinedMy process in doing my revision started out by reading all the comments made on the peer review sheet. I started with one sheet and looked at my paper at the same time to see where she recommended making some changes and then looked at the same place on the other peer review to see if they suggested something similar or if I needed to look at correcting both items. I was a little confused at one point because one said I had great topic sentences, and the other said I needed to work on them and after rereading it, I did need to work on those, so I did. I then next looked at my sandwiching and added some to that, I think my top bun needed some work, and so does the bottom bun. I am not sure if I still have those correct. When reading my paper, please look at that, can it be better or do I have it at all? I worked on my punctuation and thought I have this all worked out, but please double that that as well. I feel confident that I have all the evidence that I need to support what Pollan w |

Joy that Kills -The Story of an HourHow would you react to discovering that your beloved was killed? One moment you're a wife and the next, a widow; all alone. In "The Story of an Hour" we have a character named Louise that suffers from heart conditions, and receives news from her sister Josephine that her husband was killed in a train accident. Louise discovers all the new possibilities that await for her now that she has all this freedom. Three major points that I will focus on will be how Louise handles the news of her husband's death, why does Louise find comfort in her husband's death, and the irony that comes into play at the end of the story. How does Louise handle the news of her husband's death? "Josephine who told her, in broken sentences; veiled hints that revealed in half concealing." (Chopin) Josephine is only telling her sister fragments of the truth of her husband's death, because she doesn't want to overwhelm her with the heart condition she has. "The people closest to her have gone to great lengths |

Charter Schools - Education MattersAbstract Charter schools are relatively new and are not without controversy. The purpose of this study is to understand how the people most affected by the development of charter schools (the students) feel about them. After a literature search and hypothesis development we created a self report measurement instrument based on the Likert scale asking about the education experiences of recent high school graduates from public, charter and private schools in our local area. 47 surveys were distributed using eight questions in four major areas: Perceptions of education quality, preparation for college, ratings of academic challenge and ratings of satisfaction of experience. Data was subsequently entered into SPSS software, coded and statistics were generated using a 3 way ANOVA to complete analysis. Our results indicate that the educational experiences of high school students we interviewed were similar in ratings for life/college preparation, academic challenge and overall satisfaction |

Into The Wild -The Journey of Chris McCandlessIn the book Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer, he explains the long journey of a young adult named Chris McCandless. McCandless was a man who felt the need to live an unconventional and joyful life. Learning from philosophers like Jack London and Henry David Thoreau, he developed his ideas about living his life to a joyful extension. His perception of the meaning of life and ideas about how to find true happiness are easily misunderstood by many. McCandless felt the need to journey on into the Alaskan wilderness and live off of the land with just a bag of rice and a poorly packed backpack. A man named Shaun Callarman stated that he did not find McCandless's journey respectable at all. Poor preparation and a few big mistakes ended up costing McCandless his life, and Shaun Callarman thinks he is "just plain crazy" for even trying. Although there are many things that McCandless could have done better, it is poor judgement of Callarman to call McCandless crazy simply because he didn' |

Let's Put Pornography Back in the ClosetSusan Brownmiller is an author and a strongly opinionated feminist. She is the founder of Women Against Pornography and author of the book Against Our Will: Men, Women and Rape (1975) and several other books and essays. In Let's Put Pornography Back in the Closet, Susan is contending the extent of rights bestowed by the First Amendment of the Constitutional Bill of Rights of the United States about what she terms as obscene sexual exploitation, dehumanizing and degrading of women through pornographic productions. While she feels the First Amendment has delivered a fairly enormous success in freedom of speech and expression, particularly in the minority unpopular ideas and dissenting political voices, she has a problem with the extent of application of this law in the production of sexual literature, particularly the commercialized pornographic sector. However, in the wake of vibrant civil societies and democracy and personal freedom deeply enshrined in the constitution, Susan fails to |

Learning Competencies of 7th GradersTHE PROBLEM RATIONALE High performance in every test is one of the major goals of every teacher and every learning institution. But most of the mathematics teachers, especially the researcher, failed to achieve these goals. During the seminar, the researcher had an informal interview with the other mathematics teacher, teaching Grade 7, in the district. Based on the interview, the researcher found that most of the students, especially those who belong to lower section, perform slowly and poorly in mathematics. Students do not have mastery even in fundamental operations. The same is true with that of the experience of the researcher. The researcher had encountered many students who obtained low scores in periodical test. Specifically in grade 7 class of SY 2015-2016, during the first periodical test, out of 89 students 39 got a score of 20 and below from 50-item test. This simply shows that the students had difficulties in learning mathematics that leads to their poor performance in t |

The Effects of Social Media on TeensIn today's world social media has entered teenager's lives in positive and negative ways. In both situations social media has had an effect on the teens of today. According to Common Sense Media (2012, "Introduction" section, para. 1) Adolescence is a time of life that is both exhilarating and daunting. It can be fraught with excitement and disappointment, self-confidence and insecurity, camaraderie and loneliness. In the teenage years it's about exploration and finding out the person you are. Because of this teens face long term and short term effects from social media, because it is shaping their lives. Their online lives are merging with their real lives and it's getting harder to separate the two as the social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter continue to rise, and control teenage lives. Social media has risen in today's society like a whirlwind, everyone seems to be a part of some social media site from adolescence to adults. However, social media seems to have i |

The War on Drugs: Time for Change!President Richard Nixon declared a "war on drugs" in 1971. The expectation then was that drug trafficking in the United States could be greatly reduced in a short time through federal policing and yet the war on drugs continues to this day (Kleiman WSJ). It has become a liability for the government which seems to have no answer in dealing with the issue. Indeed, the problem is so complex that it has produced not just one clear, simple, wrong solution but two: the "drug war" (prohibition plus massive law enforcement) and proposals for wholesale drug legalization. Fortunately, these two bad ideas are not our only choices. We could instead take advantage of proven new approaches that can make us safer while greatly reducing the number of Americans behind bars for drug offenses (Caulkin,WSJ ). Remember the quote by George Bernard Shaw "Those who cannot change their minds, cannot change anything. Can we overcome our stubborn attitude, and chose a different path to achieve our goal?&quo |

My Happy PlaceBefore I was born, I was fortunate enough to have loving parents who crafted a bedroom for me. A beautiful wooden cradle, a comfy rocking chair, a hutch, and a toy box with bears painted on it were just a few of the things I was blessed with having as an infant. Over the years, my bedroom has not only evolved, but has also become my sanctuary and a huge part of my life. Everyone needs to take a break from the stressfulness of their own life, once in a while. When I ask myself where the best place to do this is, I do not have to think for more than an instant. My happy place is my bedroom, its comfortable vibe, memories, and frequent visitors give me a sense of happiness like no other. Many people, including myself, do not find comfort in many things or places around the world. The thought of escaping to my room after a long day of work, school, and socializing is such a relief. The quiet atmosphere gives me a sense of calmness, peace, and happiness. As I lay on my flower filled comforter spread across my queen sized bed, I almost feel as if I am a queen in this mini kingd |

English Paragraph for BeginnersTopic 1: Write a paragraph about the importance of music in our life. Music has become part of people's every day routine and is significant to people for a number of reasons. First and foremost, music is an effective stress management tool. As long as people like the music they are listening to, they are likely to be absorbed in it; therefore, music grabs their attention away from stressful scenarios, helps them forget the burden of their work and promote their optimism. Secondly, thanks to music, ones' social relations can be developed. Tunes connect people of the same taste together, give people chances to meet new friends who may be lifelong companions standing by them in the future. Finally, music enhances the atmosphere of ceremonies. It is music that adds solemnity to formal conferences, joyfulness to happy events and mournfulness to funerals. In conclusion, music produces many positive effects on our life |

Zoos - Cruelty Behind Closed DoorsEveryone has been to a zoo at one point in time in their life. We pay money to see and watch animals walk around and sleep in cages while looking depressed. As stated by Corrine Henn, "For thousands of years, humans have put wild animals on display for the sake of our entertainment." There has never been a proven point for the existence of zoos and animals do not exist just for our enjoyment. Animals in the wild have been declining drastically since zoos have been in existence. With the number of zoos, illegal and legal, increasing so does the number of animals endangered or threatened. While many people find zoos to be fun and entertaining, the animals in the zoos do not, and hope and dream to be free one day from what they feel compares to a prison. The prisons zoo animals have to call home, compare nothing to what their natural habitat could provide for them. Zoos spend thousands of dollars to create extravagant habitats for the animals to live in, but the problem still |

Misunderstood: Immigrants in AmericaAmerica is sometimes referred to as a "nation of immigrants" because of our largely open-door policy toward accepting foreigners pursuing their vision of the American Dream. Recently, there has been a clamor by some politicians and citizens toward creating a predominantly closed-door policy on immigration, arguing that immigrants "threaten" American life by creating unemployment by taking jobs from American workers, using much-needed social services, and encroaching on the "American way of life." In fact, immigrants actually enhance American life by creating jobs and bolster social service funds through tax payments and they bring valuable technical knowledge and cultural diversity to our country. A common argument among those opposing further immigration is that foreigners take U.S. jobs and cause unemployment among the displaced American workers. In the July 13, 1992 , a poll states that sixty-two percent of non-blacks and sixty-three percent of blacks agree that "new immigrants t |

The Concept of Positive PsychologyChapter 3 discusses the topic of subjective well-being which brings the question of "what does it mean to be happy?" For self-report measures, there are two assumptions that are made, one being that the amount of happiness someone feels can be translated into a numerical number, and two being that if two people both scored a "6" on the same test then they have the same level of happiness no matter what societal level. There are empirical results that actually affirm the validity of these two assumptions (Diener, 1984), which is a little a questionable to me. I do agree that people from different societal levels can have relatively the same degree of happiness, but what about all the factors involved? There are different kinds of happiness, such as someone can have an overwhelmingly happy due to the love they from their family and friends even though they have a crappy job as to someone who is the same level of happiness with no family or love but lots of money and wealth. There has been scientific evidence that one's average level of happiness and life satisfaction are both rel |
