Traditional and Digital Art

With the development of modern technology, digital art has been playing an increasingly important role in daily life since the 1990s and therefore, it also has triggered many discussions about its effects. Digital art, which is based on the traditional art, refers to forms of expression and transmission of the art form with digital form. (Weiming Du, et al. 2010) Nowadays digital art is stronger and more popular than traditional art. This paper will examine differences between digital art and traditional art in three aspects, ways of creation, novel display experience and propagation speed and efficiency, respectively. Referring to ways of creation, digital art uses digital technologies as a tool to create art objects and their aesthetic effects. There are more and more artists who work on various kinds of art, drawing, painting and sculpture apply digital technology in their field of art. Additionally, the revision of digital art works can be easy. Traditional art, in contrast, it uses traditional painter' s paraphernalia such as papers or canvas, pencils, brushes and inks. And it is easily predictable that revisions can be a pain. Art material

UK Governments and Media Spin

In this essay, I aim to prove that current government "welfare reform" policy set out to influence the public to support its ideas. As part of this, I will demonstrate how certain sections of the media were influenced to demonise the poorest in our society. Recently, the impact of reforms has been broader and deeper than those made several years ago. I will argue that this has the potential to change public opinion and reduce government support for the welfare reform agenda. The Conservative Party's policy has promoted individualism and sought to reduce dependency on the state. Thatcher, in particular, was a Conservative leader who believed in this policy. In the late 1970's the Thatcher government thought providing generous collective provisions for unemployment and sickness would sap some of the wills from working class peoples' drive to work (Florence Sutcliffe-Braithwaite, 2013). The current Conservative government continues with these policies. Arguably, recognising it

Economic Power: Past and Present

American society has always been powered by the saying "Whoever dies with the most toys wins." This saying had been around since the early settling periods when America had only begun to expand but not just in America as Laurence Shames beliefs. We the people have always had the need for more things; in the past, it was land and wealth, and now it is everything else. In "The More Factor" by Laurence Shames makes connections with America's frontier history and today's modern consumer behavior. However, in his writing I do not believe he takes it far enough, wanting more has influence humanity throughout history and not just in America. There are many connections between the sayings of "More is better" and "frontierism" in American history. Laurence Shames describes the "More Factor" as the acquisition of things such as more land and more money (Shames 81). While Shames is correct in his theory of how modern day capitalism emerged, I do

The Dark Snow by Brendan DuBois

"The Dark Snow" is a short story by Brendan DuBois and it was published in 1996. The story revolves around a man who moves to Nansen in New Hampshire, after retiring from the army. As he slowly settles in, he starts to see a psychiatrist named Ron, but he faces a rough time opening up about his past as well as trying to adjust to his new civilian life, while being harassed and excluded by the town's inhabitants. The main themes in the story are letting go of the past, harassment and exclusion. The main character is trying to adjust to his new civilian life, and he goes through a hard time where the inhabitants of Nansen expose him for harassment, and while he tries to handle the chicane, he only meets people who recommend him to move away. Another main theme in the short story is about leaving the past behind and letting go. The narrator is definitely dealing with some very big life changes, and he is facing a lot of dissimilarities compared to his old life. He has a hard time fittin

Health is Wealth

Mahatma Gandhi, a great Indian philosopher, once said: "it is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver." However, people seem to neglect these words. People are too busy building up their money, working so hard to the extent of losing and forgetting one most essential thing that is health. According to the World Health Organization, health is the state of complete physical, social and mental well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. Every individual desires to live completely free from illness. It is very important to be aware of what we put it in our body. Moreover, it is a golden rule that every individual should take good care of his or her body. Hence, if you think of the body like a car, you can only use the required gas. If the ca

Who Are You Calling Underprivileged?

Natasha Rodriguez, in "Who Are You Calling Underprivileged" says that "[s]ocial research has found that those who are negatively labeled usually have lower self-esteem than others who are not labeled in that way" (207). As you read her story, you notice that she does not agree with being called underprivileged by others, or at all in that matter. Since the studies are not sited, it is hard for Natasha to win over her persuasive argument. In the beginning of her story, Natasha states that she has lived a happy life. From her reading, you can see that Rodriguez sees being called underprivileged a major issue. She states that the definition of "Underprivileged" refers to "a person who does not enjoy the same standard of living or rights as a majority of people in society" (207). The st

The Fluidity of the American Civil War

The American Civil War, widely known in the United States as simply the Civil War as well as other names, was a civil war fought from 1861 to 1865 to determine the survival of the Union or independence for the Confederacy. Among the 34 states in January 1861, seven Southern slave states individually declared their secession from the United States and formed the Confederate States of America. The Confederacy, often simply called the South, grew to include eleven states, and although they claimed thirteen states and additional western territories, the Confederacy was never diplomatically recognized by any foreign country. The states that remained loyal and did not declare secession were known as the Union or the North. The war had its origin in the factious issue of slavery, especially the extension of slavery into the western territories. After four years of combat, which had left around 750,000 Americans, Union and Confederate, dead and had destroyed much of the South's infrastructure,

The Value of Archetypes in Literature

Archetypes are prevalent throughout literature similar to the way they have been since the beginning of time. There are countless numbers of myths, legends, and novels in the world today, however all pieces of literature have the same way of implementing archetypes. Similar images, characters, and symbols reappear in literature throughout different periods of time and represent different aspects of the change in human culture. Taking elements from The Odyssey and The Once and Future King, this pattern can be spotted. Although these masterpieces are from different authors with different styles of writing, the literary archetypes are strangely similar. The reason archetypes have continued to persist throughout the progression of time is so that readers can get a better understanding of a piece of literature in terms of human interaction, the conflicts in it, and relate to the characters. Odysseus from The Odyssey and King Arthur from The Once and Future King are the best character exampl

Interviewing a Mortgage Broker

In 2011, the National Housing Survey of Canada confirmed that 69% of Canadians own the place that they are living in. Out of the 69% who are homeowners, 25.2% of them are using up more than 30% of their household income to pay for their mortgage and household expenses. Therefore, it is quite obvious that buying a house is one of the biggest purchases in our lives. However, not all people educate and familiarize themselves with the mortgage market before purchasing a home. This is the main reason why I chose to interview my mentor, an experienced mortgage broker; to explain to new or aspiring mortgage brokers the importance of educating our clients and capitalize on the continuous growth of real-estate market as well. Regardless of his busy schedule, Jeremiah, mortgage broker from Mortgage Alliance Winnipeg, allotted his time to provide helpful information for this interview. He has been an insurance broker and a mortgage broker for almost 10 years. His knowledge for the business is

After Largo and Rodrigo tell Brabantio about the marriage, he immediately rushes to Desdemona's room to discover that she was missing and because Othello is a moor he assumed that Othello must have tricked Desdemona into marrying him and plans to kill him. The next day Lago is with Othello and they are talking about Othello'

John Donne's World

John Donne created a metaphysical world where everyone is connected, eternality is different from immortality, and where death has no power. In his world love is metaphysical meaning that it is out of our understanding of our physical world. In Holy Sonnet 10, it talks about how death has now power over us. The meditation starts off with "Death, be not proud, though some have called thee mighty and dreadful, for thou art not so". That means people say that Death is powerful but that is not the case. It continues to say how death cannot kill him. In line nine its says "Thou art slave to fate, chance, kings, and desperate men,". That is saying that death doesn't choose who to kill, death is a slave to fate. The sonnet goes on to say that we give death its power. Holy Sonnet 10 also talks about that death

Tabula Rasa and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

John Locke's book, "An Essay Concerning Human Understanding," presents the concept of Tabula Rasa or blank slate, which states that the human mind receives knowledge through the experience without any pre-existing innate ideas when they were born. In Mark Twain's "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn," the notion of Tabula Rasa can be seen through Huck's character. Huck shows that his experiences have guided him through the evilness of society. For each "adventure" he went on, he can recognize what is immoral and corrupt in society from the previous experiences he had. Huck's independence makes him a good person in an evil society. Twain uses Tom Sawyer's childish ideas to show how it affects Huck's morals. Tom is a middle-class boy who received religious teaching and was indoctrinated with social values. He is also Huck's friend, who has an assertive nature and acts as a leader to his friends. As Tom tries to adapt his life and others to the books he has read, Tom had led his

Novel Analysis - Beloved

Tackling the task of reading Toni Morrison's "Beloved" can be quite daunting. A thick, thoughtful, and often circular novel on the trials of new life after slavery, Morrison's book is a hefty and challenging read for even the adept. It's hard enough to simply grasp the twisting story of this book, let alone to understand the underlying themes and insights Morrison hides between her powerful descriptions. In standing strong against the torrent of information and confusing literature, one can find a very powerful and emotional message about the lasting legacy and shackling destructiveness of slavery and its wide reaches into the time after emancipation. As one reads through the story of Sethe and her family, Morrison's very powerful thoughts on the period after slavery are revealed. In Beloved, Toni Morrison uses the recounting of Seethe's experience in being milked and Paul D's description of his experience with the bit to convey a message of the horrible unjustifiability of slavery. Ozymandias and Death Be Not Proud

Percy Bysshe Shelley's "Ozymandias," is considered to be one of the finest sonnets of all time. It has given us an excellent lesson which teaches us that possessions don't cause immortality. Even though we may try to overcome our mortality by leaving behind our footprints of our existence, it is not that easy. To Shelley, no one in the world lives forever, but their great works continue long past the individual is gone. On the other hand, John Donne's, "Death be not Proud, though some have called thee", addresses the facts that "Death" is not the end of the life but in many ways a new beginning. Donne points out to the fact that whether we are afraid of death or not, it doesn't matter because we have to face it ultimately. He uses his creative styles and own techniques to show us how different "Death" is for him. An author's view on some aspects of life is often reflected in their literary works. Sometimes various thoughts, feelings or mood of

The Consequences of Remedial Education

Remedial education or basic skills is education designed to help students gain academic skills, needed to be placed at a college level. Providing students with remedial education has always been a widespread problem. In 1849, the University of Wisconsin was the first school to offer remedial education programs. In the twentieth century, remedial education was only offered at junior colleges. (Breneman and Haarlow,10) In community colleges today, over fifty percent of students are placed in remedial education courses. Students are often required to take more than one basis skills course since they are underprepared. According to the U.S Department of Education, only thirty-two percent of students leave high school prepared and qualified for a four-year college. (Greene and Forster,3) Students are leaving high school with out the basic skills needed for college. When students enroll in college unprepared, the college must provide remedial education. However, the consequences of remedial

How the Industrial Revolution Impacted the World

The 1700s and the rise of Industrialization as a whole changed agriculture and the general culture of the world incredibly, in a way that's still visible today. "This process has continued during the twentieth century" (Cranny 129). From then on, the Industrial Revolution has changed productivity by using more efficient tools and methods. This revolution has changed horticulture in multiple ways. First, mankind has always been influenced by their inventions, it allows them to grow and increase productivity; this is especially prevalent in the Industrial Revolution. Second, new inventions weren't the only aspect that shaped the Industrial Revolution, culturally the world and society became more accepting of a career orientated lifestyle, and this allowed for more productivity. Lastly, with a cultural acceptance of hard-work, comp

The Weaknesses of Women in Hamlet

In many of William Shakespeare's works, it is evident that Shakespeare is alluding the lack of intelligence and weakness of women. "Frailty, thy name is woman" (1.2.146), quoted by Shakespeare in Hamlet is an example of this. In Hamlet, Shakespeare depicts characters like Ophelia and Gertrude as demonstrating weakness and being tools of manipulation by the males in their lives. Their actions and fates are greatly influenced by the men's decisions and are led by the men in their lives, which gives them a weak image. Women in the Elizabethan era were reliant on men to make their decisions as they were oppressed and disregarded in society. As Alex Gilbertson states, "this was not a glorious time for most women because they were looked down upon and faced oppression from the men of the society." (1). To begin with, Gertrude being used by male characters and how she reacts to tragedy portrays her as weak-minded. Claudius deceives Gertrude and uses her as a mean to gain

The Moment that Changed My Life

Like every family, my family has always had ups and downs, happiness and sorrow. My family has always been united and a whole. Unlike other unfortunate children, my parents are together and have always shown me appreciation. My parents have always been very traditional and have taught me manners and how to be talented and educated children. My mom has always been home for me when I need her. She has always been less strict and firm than my dad, but she still demands respect. Both my mom and dad have given me full trust in return for my respect and behavior. But I was not prepared to receive such news, it was the beginning of 2005 and my father seeing that my mother was for several days complaining about a pain in the belly, they both decided to go to the hospital and ask a medical opinion of what could be that pain. On the day that they went, my parents left early, and I was home alone despite my young age, only 10 years old, I knew how to take care of myself. I awoke up and since it

Interpretation on I Stand Here Ironing

"I Stand Here Ironing" is a short story written by Tillie Olsen, a famous writer. Olsen is best known for her works of fiction, high-lighting the lives of working-class Americans. "I Stand Here Ironing" is about a young mother, trying to make ends meet by using all her time towards her job. By doing so, she ends up, unknowingly, shutting out her daughter, Emily. Emily is known for being understanding, which sometimes causes her to be left out of the spotlight. Due to Emily being considerate, she eventually started to feel left out and forgotten. After numerous failed attempts from her mother and others to help Emily feel wanted and loved, she becomes closed off and finds herself not wanting her mother's affection no longer. Also, the story outlines many themes throughout the story. Two main themes that are widely exhibited are poverty and absence. Both are heavily contributing to the big idea Olsen is trying to emphasize in her Mother-Daughter story. In the very be

Periodic Table of Elements and Light Spectrums

Introduction The periodic table currently contains over 100 different elements that are known to this universe. Each element exhibits both chemical and physical properties which make them unique from one another. To get a closer look of things, everyone used a spectroscope to examine the patterns and colors of the elements based on the rainbow. Essentially, it separates light into waves that we known as colors. A complete mixture of all wavelengths of visible spectrum is known as white light. Spectrums are formed from white lights and frequencies. A white light can be generated by both artificial and space sources (Joshua E. Barnes, September 2015). For example, an abundant source could be the sun and fluorescent light bulbs. One type of line spectrum was a bright line spectr

Helen Keller and the Deaf Culture

Helen Adams Keller was born June 27th, 1880 West Tuscumbia, Alabama, which is now a museum and sponsors a annual Helen Keller day. She was an American author, political activist and lecturer. Helen was not only the first women but the first person who was deaf and blind to earn her Bachelor of Arts degree. Even though Helen was deaf and blind she did not let that stop her from being the great women that she was. She not only campaigned for the women's suffrage, labor right and socialism but she was also inducted into the Alabama Women's hall of Fame in 1971. Helen was like any other child growing up she had two younger siblings and two older half brothers. I believe she was influenced by her father when writing since her father too was a writer. Well to be exact he was an editor for the Tu

Hillary Clinton and the Dark Side of the Internet

Should we regard advancements of the internet? Nowadays, people can find information that they want to know from many sources such as internet, news, libraries. However, they usually use the internet as a fastest choice to access information because of its convenient. Beside this advantage of the internet, its is also dangerous to the users because of anti-political groups, human traffickers, child pornographers or hackers. Hence, the Internet users and governments should have methods and regulations that can prevent them from these effects. "Internet Rights and Wrongs – Choices and Challenges in a Networked World" (Comley 570) is the article that Hillary Clinton wants to expand her thought about the negative side of the internet to the world. In the article "Internet Rights and Wrongs – Choices and Challenges in a Networked World" (Comley 570) Hillary Rodham Clinton gives a question about whether the internet is a force for liberation or repression. In the beginning, she mentions about the dark side of the internet was caused by the conflicts of the Egyptian government. Their gover

Social Justice and Teens Who Volunteer

We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics stated during the year of 2009, approximately 63.4 million people recognised the importance of volunteer work, and gave their time through an organisation at least once. Community services provide support to sustain and nurture the functioning of individuals, families and groups, to maximise their potential and enhance community well being (Australian Council of Social Service, 2009). Throughout this campaign, it is discussed Why every young person should volunteer? To ultimately understand the significance of community service as an aspect of working towards social justice and shaping the community. Today I am promoting the Riding for Disabled campaign as a volunteer option for all students to participate in, and by being involved with this great program will strongly reflect the importance of why every young person should volunteer. Volunteering is referred to a person who freely offers to take part in an enterprise or undertake a task with no monetary benefits (volunteeringaustralia.org, 201

Letter to Myself: First Semester of College

Dear Future Self, Today is my first day of classes at New Paltz and it has been a good day. My roommate and I were worried about classes and what would be required of us, but so far, we are fine. Within the next four years, I am hoping to walk out of here with the knowledge and skills to be able to get a job in the education field. The one course that I know I will have to really focus on and put effort into is English. One thing that I have always been told is that I have to expand my thoughts and ideas in order to improve my writing. I am hoping I will learn how to do that in the course. One of my greatest weaknesses is waiting until the last possible moment to complete an assignment just because I do not want to write the paper. This year I am going to learn how to manage my time and try to have the writing assignments done day before they are due, that way I have time to read the assignments over and make any changes that it may need. One way I will balance all my workload is by setting as
