Food, Culture, and My Family

Culture is defined as: the beliefs, customs, arts, etc., of a particular society, group, place, or time and food is defined as: something that people eat. We can connect to our culture by the foods that we eat. We use food to bring our family and friends together for different types of celebrations or just for the Sunday dinner. We take great care into what ingredients we use, how we prepare the foods, and how we enjoy eating all the food that has been prepared. Connecting to our culture is an important aspect in how our families continue to share traditions and it teaches our children about where their ancestors came from. Culture usually starts with where our relatives lived and how they grew up, what was important in their families becomes important in our families. In this chapter I would like to share with you how food and culture are incorporated into my family and can easily be incorporated into an event. I'm going to give you a taste, with no pun intended, of our Lithuani

A Dystopia - Richard Brautigan

On May 25, 1960, John F. Kennedyvsaid: "I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth." Many of his dreams came true, and this was not an exception. On 20 July 1969, Apollo 11 landed in the moon, fulfilling the American goal of that decade. These two events were crucial for the history of America, and we can assume there were many groups fascinated about the space, and technology. This changes were blossoms of new possibilities for the future. However, there was a different type of people; those who expressed a struggle towards these changes through literature, such as Richard Brautigan in one of his many poems called: "all watched over by machines of loving grace." In 1950, Richard Brautigan was part of a movement started in San Francisco, called "The Beat Generation". In a book published in 2003 called "The Beat generation in San Francisco, a

Summary of Michael Kimmel's Guyland

In Michael Kimmel's story of "Guyland," he offers a view into the minds and times of America's sons, brothers, and boyfriends, and why so many of these guys seem to be stuck between adolescence and adulthood. The passage from adolescence to adulthood was once clear, consistent; in their late teenage years and early twenties, guys seemed to mature faster and enter their futures as responsible adults. As in today's era, it seems as growing up for these young men has become more complex and confusing as they drift casually through college and beyond. Most of the guys tend to hang mainly out, party, play video games and watch sports. The average young American man today is moving through a new stage of development, a buddy culture untroubled by the demands of parents, girlfriends, jobs, kids, and other annoyance of adult life. To understand this world and this life stage, that these young men go through can be very challenging and quite annoying. Some might just give up on them

Is Marriage a Thing of the Past?

In today's society, couples are getting married for many reasons, but when they hear the word marriage for many it can't even be pronounced. A lot people feel that getting married is for older people and not for the young ones, although we still see young couples compromising more than before and taking that next step of living together without any compromise. Marriage is out of date in today's society because people are scared to compromise, it is based on beliefs and they see getting marriage and some couples although they are together for years they still feel they are not ready to get married. Marriage is something you have to work at to keep it alive which is something that not many people who are in a relationship don't understand and end up breaking up. Couples prefer to stay out of a commitment and the effort that it takes to stay in a healthy marriage. Many go to that next step of compromise and end up going back home to their parents. Those who are in an open relationship believe that to build a relationship and stability they do no need to sign what

Poetry Analysis - The Blue Dress

Children often put themselves in adult situations wanting to feel and have a sense of acknowledgment by adults. This is something everybody at some point in their life dreams about; being a grown up and being acknowledged. However, sometimes if that acknowledgment is absent it may be easier to tell yourself a lie and believe a false reality rather than face the truth and risk being alone. In the poem The Blue Dress, by Sharon Olds, the speaker is an enlightened young woman remembering and reflecting back to a time when she was caught up in an ever so loving lie created at the hand of a gift from her divorced father. The speaker reminisces on her longing feelings for a father figure and comes to the ultimate conclusion that she has past that longing point in her life and has moved on. In The Blue Dress the speaker remembers feeling enthralled when she receives a birthday gift, for the first time, from her father. The gift comes with no card and is described as being from an adult clot

Perfume: The Story of a Murderer by Patrick Suskind

Abstract The resulting essay answers the following question, 'In what ways does narrative perspective reveal author's message in Perfume: The Story of a Murderer by Patrick Suskind?' Multiple parts of narrative perspective are examined: how the narrative perspective is used to surprise the reader in different ways and how the irony, symbols, and emotions are used to help the narrator explain the characters and events throughout the story as well as understanding the psychopath himself. In order to address my research question I conducted a careful analysis of Grenouille and the influence his perspective of narrator has on his portrayal as a psychopath is essential. Minor research into the significance of narrative symbolism and motifs, and third-person narration of the reader into a novel is gathered to inform my understanding of the significance of narrative perspective. I have realized that the perspective on narration causes a certain reaction to the psychopath or protagonis

How to Learn to Speak Chinese

"Americans have never been particularly interested in learning other languages and are even less interested today." (Will Americans really learn Chinese, the New York Times) It seems to be a common sense that U.S people don't like to learn foreign language, this may be a little bit Anglo-centric, but this is not weird since English is the world language. However the article then tells us "Chinese instruction is no passing fad, what with 1.3 billion people to talk to." What makes the U.S people turn out to be a passionate language learner? Through reading the article, we may know the reason is the development of China. China is now considered one of the most powerful and greatest economies, has a great impact on American people; we never imagine Chinese would be the most popular language to be learned in U.S before. In fact, President Obama announced a new initiative by 25th September 2015 aimed at having 1 million American schoolchildren learn Mandarin Chinese over

Symptoms and Treatments of Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder is a very common disorder, as there are more than 3 million reported cases every year. This type of disorder does not affect any single group; therefore, it is not predominant in amongst any race, sex, or age. Bipolar disorder is categorized as a mood disorder, which is usually, "characterized by a loss of the sense of control and a subjective experience of great distress" (Sadock 527). Some research suggests that highly creative people such as artists, composers, writers, and poets, show unusually high rates of bipolar disorder and that period of mania fuel their creativity. Famous artists and writers who might have suffered from bipolar disorder include poets Lord Byron and Anne Sexton, and novelists Virginia Woolf and Ernest Hemingway. There are many symptoms that may signify if a person is bipolar, but many are over-looked because they are seen as normally occurring human behavior. The two main types of bipolar disorder are Bipolar I and Bipolar II. D

Psychosocial Factors of School Bullying

I chose this article because I have been a victim of bullying. I believe that bullying, to a certain degree, can have a negative effect on a person's childhood and later in their adult life. I believe everyone, at some point in their life, is either a victim of bullying or a bully themselves. The article defines bullying as: when there are repeated acts of unprovoked aggression that are damaging psychological or physically for the victim, and where the strength of the aggressors and the victim are unequal. Scientists define three types of bullying: verbal, relational, and physical. Bullying and victimization are declared physical and psychological symptoms. They can lead to a higher prevalence of self-destructive behaviors such as smoking and alcohol use and an increased risk of psychopathology and depression, which can lead to suicidal behavior, especially among girls. Victimization in childhood is related to poorer social adaptation, unhappiness, and behavior-related problems at scho

Essay on the French Revolution

The French Revolution was a period of significant social and political changes in French history which had major impact on the political, social and cultural developments not only in France and Western Europe. Many historians studied the French Revolution and while they often disagreed over the relative significance of specific changes or developments, they agreed that the French Revolution is a very important event in modern history, and more radical than either the English or American Revolutions. This essay will argue that the French Revolution is the "dawn of the modern era" and that it inaugurated a new, modern period in Western history in France, Europe and other Westernized countries worldwide. Specific examples will be cited to demonstrate how the Western civilization was influenced and changed by the French Revolution. Civil Disorder and the Right to Protest The storming of the Bastille in 1789 was the spark that ignited the French Revolution. Civil disorder actions ag

Crime and Criminal Justice

Discuss the ways in which reporting can effect audience's perceptions of crime and criminal justice using examples. Crime reporting comes in various forms, but comes mainly in print and broadcast media. Nowadays, we can add the internet, facebook and all other forms of interactive communication technologies. They all play a critical role in shaping public perception of crime and criminal justice. Stenson and Croall (2001) analysis of the media 's role is that "it can shape and reflect our deepest fears about crime and insecurity." I will start by looking at the various models by which we are being fed information and how we perceive them. • Although the mass media may communicate the same message to large numbers of people, it should not be assumed that the message is interpreted in the same way by those receiving it. This is reflected by the two-step flow model. The message conveyed reaches the audience, the audience in turn interprets it any which way they want and th

Early Italian Renaissance and Late Italian Gothic Art

1. St. Francis was a saint who had many religious and spiritual insights. He believed that intellect achieves truth and faith, and that personal experience is very important. In order to understand God and be truly converted, Francis believed that God needed to be experienced for oneself. He also had a strong connection and passion for the beauty of the natural world which caused him to have a futile mindset towards formal philosophy. His views and ideas of the natural world left a significant impact on young Giotto, a young Italian painter. Giotto looked at how nature was. In his works, he portrayed a direct observation of nature as he modeled with light and shading, used human emotions, and attempted to create linear perspective. Giotto had received this inspiration for his works from St. Francis as he tried to continue the observations and beauty of nature in his paintings. In both Giotto's and Francis' renderings of Madonna Enthroned, it is clear that both artists tried to gathe

Discrimination in Health Care

There is an old saying which says "Health is Wealth," and for many individuals, this is true. The great Mahatma Gandhi subscribed to this notion and claimed that "it is health which is real wealth, and not pieces of gold and silver". The author of this paper maintains that both health and wealth are vital in life, as they decide the quality of life persons lead. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. Hence, health is a level of functional proficiency and overall state of one's mind, body and spirit. Thus, the modified saying now states "a healthy nation is a wealthy nation." However, why are some nations wealthier than others? Do we all have equal access to health care? Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to delve into the inequalities faced by certain groups in society in relation to access to health care. Firstly, the autho

Women, College, and a Better Life

"As you educate a woman, you educate the family. If you educate the girls, you educate the future" (Queen Rania). Life as a girl in my culture is not so easy when it comes to being independent and getting all the education needed. For example, many girls are not allowed to go to college after graduating high school, that is if they finish high school. One of the main reasons I have worked so hard during prior years of education is because no one in my family has their high school diploma. I will be the first one to graduate with a diploma. I would also like to accomplish the many goals I have set for myself for the present and the future. However, most of my goals cannot be reached without a college degree. When I get the college degree, I will be an independent woman. I will also be able to care for my family and be an inspiration to others. The past couple of years were life-changing for me. I got a taste of how life could be in the future. I became more responsible. When

The Rise in Police Brutality

Almost every week, it feels as if another man dies at the hands of the police. Many think police brutality has overcome the nation of America. Left and right, there is coverage shown of a shooting that killed another citizen. Statistically, the number of deaths caused by the police skyrocketed in the last few years. However, the statistical experts deny this claim is true. The specialists announce, "Citizens rely on hunches because real numbers do not exist: likely because no one thought it important to keep a tally until recently." (Minority Threat 34). Furthermore, much of the public does not realize the fact that statistics have not been created until the past few years. While many people think that police brutality is present in this country, they do not consider everything the law enforcement handles. First of all, many deaths are caused by self-defense from the task force. The public see the deaths of the american citizens as murder. However, they do not take into cons

The Ongoing Problem of Cyberbullying

Growing up is hard, whether one has grown older and knew from experience or if you are dealing with it right now, you know that those years before you enter adulthood can be the hardest times of your life. When you are a teenager, you deal with an abundance of stressful things on a day-to-day basis, bullying is a very common aspect for a teenage. Whether you like it or not, bullying has been around in one way or another, especially in modern times, is it harder for teens to deal with the stresses of being disliked. Bullying has spread to the internet, making it easier for a "bully" conflict the teen, even in the comfort of their own home. The internet can be a bully's salvation; it takes away from the face-to-face confrontation, making it less of a possibility to be caught. Social media is the way teens stay connected in modern days. When a teen posts a picture on the internet it's open for the public to see, one can comment on the post and say what they chose to about the p

Abuse Leading to Multiple Personality Disorder

Miller, Mark, and Barbara Kantrowitz. "Unmasking Sybil." Newsweek. Jan. 25 1999: 66-68. SIRS Issues Researcher. Web. 08 Jan. 2016. Mark and Barbara, by writing this magazine article, were trying to take apart the story of Sybil, or Shirley Ardell Mason, and to inform the reader on the life of Sybil and how Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD) affected her and those around her. It mainly focuses on the books' affect on the world, North America in general, as most of the reported cases of MPD since the book's release, was in North America. And Mason's upbringing and her life after she met Wilbur, her psychiatrist and life long friend. This magazine article debunked some of the things that happened in the book Sybil as it was "A Re-Examination of the Most Famous Psychiatric Patient in History". And find out how true the book actually was. For instance, the article put in a quote that said that the worst abuse in the book, most likely did not happen. The article presented facts

My Experiences with Reading

Born in a household where English is not the prominent language, my childhood experiences with reading are scarce. It was not until those magical high school years when my affection toward readings begun. The affair wasn't that spicy, but I was surely dating my random readings in the library. Each day, I would randomly pick a copy and open a random page to read. The school library used to be my lunch table for half hour. In addition to my passionate reading sessions, I had some great teachers throughout who have encouraged me to enjoy reading and till date, my best read is "The Kite Runner" by Khaled Hosseini. In these college years, I do not have much time to read, because of my schedule. The only reading I am able to do is on the internet. Some of the pages I like to follow on social media are "Terribly Tiny Tales," and "The Anonymous Writer." These pages post both fiction and non-fiction stories written by amate

The War with ISIS

Quickly taking after the savage terrorist assaults on New York and Washington, DC, on September 11, 2001, the United States set out on a war on terrorism. At first, the primary center was on the worldwide terrorist system known as al-Qaeda. Be that as it may, global jihadist terrorism is show in different gatherings, and today, a standout amongst the most prompt dangers to the universal group is the one postured by ISIS. Despite the fact that ISIS, at first, kept up an association with al-Qaeda, ISIS has utilized such severe strategies against both non-Muslims and Muslims that al-Qaeda has upbraided it. ISIS's announcement of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria has made a hazardous locale in which the Yazidi and other ethnic and religious gatherings are as a rule violently focused in what the US government has portrayed as genocide. The consequence of ISIS's activities is a philanthropic emergency in the area. The United States, alongside whatever is left of the global group, has rightly perceived an enthusiasm for a steady Middle East. The perfect, from the American point of view, is that

A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings: Elder Abuse

With advances in technology, people are living longer and thriving, sometimes living into their 90's and 100's. While most people would think that this is a tremendous breakthrough, and some would not. Many treat the elderly as 'trash', and simply consider them as people who are out of their prime years. The abuse of the elderly is a serious predicament in today's society, and is growing precipitately. All people should have the right to live their lives without abuse, neglect, and being exploitations. In Garcia Marquez's story "A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings," the treatment of the old man is a metaphor for the way many societies treat their elderly. In "A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings," the people in the story assume the old man has no usable skills whatsoever. People come only to see the old man in hopes that he will help them because they believe that the old man may be 'supernatural'. When Pelayo and Elisenda first come in contact with the angel, they simply leave him in the chicken coop, without even tryin

History Essay - The Atomic Bomb

In the early morning hours of August 6, 1945, the American bomber Enola Gay dropped a five-ton bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. Four square miles of the city was reduced to rubble and more than 80,000 innocent civilians were killed on impact. The second bomb was dropped on Nagasaki three days later. Another 40,000 civilians perished in the disaster, not to mention the many more who died later from injuries and radiation poisoning. Japan had no choice but to surrender at this point. I believe that the atomic bombs dropped on Japan were not justified. Even though President Harry S. Truman was trying to make the right decision and end the war as quickly as possible, I think it was unnecessary to drop the powerful and destructive nuclear bombs on Japan. In a letter to a journalist Truman stated, "I knew what I was doing when I stopped the war. That would have killed half a million you

Short Story - If Not for Her

As I looked above me, the light shined down on me as if it were going to encase an angel, a misty light blue with smeared streaks of darkness. The sun reflected off the water making everything seem brighter. As I stared into the light, I could feel the rhythm of my heart weaken with every second that went by. I struggled for air as I sunk deeper and deeper into the water. My limbs had gone numb as I started to shake. I felt like I was having a seizure, but I knew I wasn't. Chlorine filled my mouth; there was nothing I could do to stop the flow of negativity and chaos from flooding in. My thoughts were spinning as I questioned if this was the right decision or not. The sharp burn of the chlorine that filled my nostrils was overwhelming. I picked through my brain, trying to remember why I was here. The irony; going from a happy kid to this state that could even make the toughest of people crumple unde

A Look at Gender Differences

Gender difference is an issue that has been the interest of scientists in the last few decades. The psychologist Dr. Lawrence Cohen has explained the gender differences and its effects in his article hunters and Gatherers in the Classroom he concentrated on the young children and how gender role starts in their life and affect their life by using certain words and behaving in a certain ways. He also showed the importance of the environment around young people which can affect the behavior of the kids because it is either construct or deconstruct them. It can be shown as aggression or bullying from the peers, but these environmental effects are not the origin of the behavior and values of both genders which controls them for the whole life. The human nature and instincts have main effects on the behavior and the choices of young children. The physical differences between males and female restrict their choices. Males are able to deal with physical activities more than women because the

Literary Analysis - Wuthering Heights

As readers, we try to relate to the characters we read about. We are always more intrigued with a book when we have something in common with one or more characters. When Bronte created the main character of the book, Heathcliff, she had no interest in creating a character we could relate to. Yet we are still intrigued with the character she created. Bronte's development of the character was done in such a way to ignite our hope to understand Heathcliff; it is the one unifying feeling everyone has experienced. I, and many other people with whom I've conferred, would consider Wuthering Heights a romance novel. In romance novels, there is always, at a minimum, one antagonist. In Wuthering Heights, a lot of people would consider the antagonist to be Heathcliff because of all of the bad things he does throughout the novel. In literature the antagonist either has a sliver of goodness deep down inside of him/her or a relatable reason that explains their behavior. Readers almost always get

Strategic Management Case Study: Tesco PLC

Introduction The Human Resource (HR) is viewed by many organisations as concerned with the administrative function and as such ignoring the need and opportunity to align or fit it with the strategic plan or plans of the organisation. In areas where HR is aligned to the strategy of an organisation, it hardly goes beyond forecasting function. The main explanation for this scenario is that HR in an organisation has never been given room in the planning section of the organisation. The irony of this is that many corporate executives and even boards leave out HR simply because by its design, HR is about, which is the core of any organisation and its strategic plan. Hypothetically, it is difficult to measure the success of HR as many consider it soft and not vital in the development of an organisation's strategic plan or strategy. Accordingly, what is measured in most of the firms must be done and has to receive the authority to contribute to the strategy. It is therefore clear that most org
