Concussions - Changing the Face of Sports

Just recently on March 16, 2015, Chris Borland, a 24 year old linebacker in the National Football League, retired after just one season due to concerns about the long term effects of repetitive head trauma. Borland believes that it isn't worth the risk because of the health problems that can occur. The thing is, he may be making a good choice; there have been more than 70 ex-players that have been diagnosed with progressive neurological disease after their death. Studies have also shown that brain damage issues like depression and memory loss have been connected to repetitive head trauma occurrences (Farinau – Wada). With this recent news, it could bring more attention to concussions and their effects on people's health. A concussion is a brain injury that is caused by getting hit in the head or a violent shaking or the head and body. That means that in some way your brain gets bruised and the nerves in your brain become damaged. According to Medical News Today, even after the s

Carl Marx and the Communist Manifesto

Carl Marx, 1818-1883 was a philosopher, social scientist, historian and revolutionary. He was mostly ignored by scholars during his lifetime, however, after his death, his social, economic and political ideas gained acceptance in the Socialist Movement. (Kreis) Friedrich Engels, 1820-1895 was a German philosopher, social scientist and journalist that founded the Marxist Theory with Karl Marx. In 1848, he co-authored the Communist Manifesto with Karl Marx (Lenin). The Communist Manifesto is divided into four (4) sections. The first section discusses the Communists' theory of history and the relationship proletarians and bourgeoisie. The second section explains the relationship between the Communists and the proletarians. The third section addresses the flaws in previous socialist literature. The final section discusses the relationship between the Communists and other parties. Marx and Engels argue that all changes in society, political institutions, and in history are driven by a process of collective struggle on the part of groups of people with similar economic situations in order to realize their mate

Ways in Which Literature Reflects Life

Literature often has themes and lessons about life. It's all around us, and whenever we read a story, we often relate to it. Three stories that I've read that relates to life are The Interlopers written by Saki, The Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allen Poe and The Necklace by Guy de Maupassant. These short stories depict many life situations people may face. Jealously, Rivalry and Greed. It may be between family, friends or even strangers. In the end, one can hope that it all gets worked out in the end. These stories turn out to have ironic endings, but the feud in it does get worked out; in a bad and dark way. In The Interlopers, this story is between two families who hated each other. The court tried to settle this feud, but neither one of them wanted to settle it. Both of the men; Ulrich and Gradwitz try to plot and pray that misfortune would fall on the other. One night as the men came upon each other in the woods, t

Anabolic Steroid - Dianabol

Methandrostenolone, or Dianabol, is an orally-effective anabolic steroid that was introduced in the early 1960s by Ciba specialty chemicals. It has been very popular amongst body builders as it is very effective for increasing body strength and helps gain muscle mass. It is also referred to as "Dbol". In the market this steroid is also known as methanol, averbol, methandienone, etc. It exhibits anabolic(tissue-building) and androgenic(sex-linked) properties. It was designed to convert to estrogen but ended up a lot more estrogenic than it was thought to be. It converts into potent estrogen which causes usual bloating in the body. It is an addition to the bulking steroid cycles which help in acquiring the "puffy look". Dosages of Dianabol are based on how much muscle mass a body builder wants to gain. Dianabol is amalgamated with enanthate, cypionate, and sustanone; which are injectable testosterones. It is also an oral testosterone, but it has 17 alpha-alkylated. This means that when the steroid passes through the liver, it will not be destroyed.

Canines and Police Work

I disagree with the statement that dogs should be blamed for making mistakes while helping the police on investigations. Dogs are natural hunters and are known for having an acute sense of smell which is why they are used to help police catch bad people. Sometimes dogs do make mistakes; it isn't like they have a conscious mind to figure things for themselves the way that humans do. Also, they aren't perfect, and neither are we, so both dogs and humans make mistakes while on the job. There are places where people want to remove dogs for doing certain things and let machines do them. Canines should be allowed to be used as evidence in the presence of a court case the same way that humans are. "They are fallible, just like a person," says Charles Mesloh speaking on behalf of the canines. Humans expect to be allowed to do what they are supposed to do but on occasion, they do make mistakes for what they were supposed to accomplish. I am astonished as well at the fact that the fir

Term Paper - My Left Foot

The film, "My Left Foot," examined at length, explores the relationship of the disabled character Christy Brown to his Mother and Father in order to identify familial ideology and its role in the construction of disability. Because of his handicap, he saw the world from a different perspective. Christy Brown is born with Cerebral Palsy into a poor, working-class Irish family. His mother, Mrs Brown, recognizes the intelligence and humanity in the boy everyone else regards as a vegetable. Eventually, Christy matures into a cantankerous writer who uses his only functional limb, his left foot, to write with and paint. He wrote this great book about his life and I believe now, he inspires with his motivational life story. As a social worker and as a human being, I see his struggles and it let me look at my problems in a whole different light, and it inspire me to try a little harder. As for the scenes that impacted me the most, I could mention more than ten (10). Yet I would talk about tw

Disobedience: A Moral and Psychological Problem

In the essay, "Disobedience as a Psychological and Moral Problem," Ericc Fromm discusses the seductive comforts of obedience, and he makes distinctions among varieties of obedience. Adam and Eve were believed to be the start of history. They started in the Garden of Eden. This garden was their home. They were in nature as the fetus is in the womb of the mother (2). They were human, and at the same time not yet human (2). Their lives as humans was believed to have started by the first act of disobedience. This bond broke their connection with nature and made them the individual humans they became. Historians have supported the idea that man had been right to disobey. Another example given, is when Prometheus stole fire from the gods, laying the foundation for the evolution of man (4). If Prometheus had not disobeyed there would be no human history. When he was punished he refused to repent and confess his sins. On the contrary, he proudly says: "I would rather be chained

Deconstructive Criticism: Beauty and the Beast

The sweet, unselfish and loving daughter named Belle can be turned into someone who we never thought when we're young that she can be. According to Derrida (1960's) Deconstruction is a method of reading which is based on the assumption that language is unreliable. The goal of a deconstructionist reading is to seek out the contradictions in the text to prove that the text lacks unity and coherence. So in the story of Beauty and the Beast we are going to find out the things that don't match with each other and the scenes that do not fit with the situations of the characters. Before the ship of Belle's father disappeared they have plenty of money because her father was a merchant, but in the story Belle is the one who do the house chores because her sisters are lazy and very demanding. If her father is really a good one and love his daughters, he could get a maid for them and let his daughters feel easy about their lives. Another thing is when her father let Belle sacrifice her own self

The Beginnings of Pop Art

Art was a reflection of the war. That was arguably until art styles like pop art were born. People of today's world look at that art and wonder, "Why/how was this considered a work of art?" As art styles change, so do mood changes. People can say that the world and what it consists of is what makes up the art of that generation. The mood was changing in this era and it was becoming more vibrant. Pop art was emerging and people endured it. Avant-garde artists, the style and feeling of the art, and the culture of the art are three of the many attributes that structure the evolution of pop art. The new era had begun Avant-garde artists were the artists that were leading an era of art into a new era. Among this time period, there were many avant-garde artists. A few of the popular people were Yves Klein, Piero Manzoni, Joseph Beuys, and Andy Warhol. Yves Klein was one of the more significant and prominent artists of this time. One of his more recognizable pieces, the "Blue Monochrome," was very influential and proven in changing the art era. A simple blue painting, but it was more than that. The vibrant and big piece of art was making a statement.

Children and Harsh Discipline

Many people would agree that physical punishment by a parent, as long as it is not severe, is necessary for a child's wrongdoing. Others would argue that parents should not use violence or public shaming to discipline their kids. There are many various methods and strategies parents use to discipline their children, yet they all have the same goals: teaching the kids to know right from wrong and showing them what is and isn't acceptable behavior. Parents should not enforce violence and harsh punishment when they are disciplining their children. However one after another, many stories are published on the media about tragic endings after kids received extreme punishments from their parents. The most recent was updated on June 5, 2015 by Nina Golgowski, about a thirteen-year-old girl named Izabel Laxamana, who jumped off a bridge after her dad recorded a humiliating video of cutting off his daughter's hair as punishment. According to New York Daily News, after the dad's friend posted th

Planned Parenthood Research Paper

The videos are everywhere. Hours of footage from an organization unknown. Scenes from undercover cameras that show doctors and staff people selling the body parts of fetus' they remove during abortions. An act that is illegal and punishable by very large fines. It became the thesis of a very heated argument over the legitimacy of an organization called Planned Parenthood. Those were their doctors and staff in the videos. Planned Parenthood is a government funded company that provides health services to those who, for a multitude of reasons like extreme family circumstances, a lack of money, etc., and cannot receive them. One of the services that Planned Parenthood offers is abortions. Due to the fact that it is government funded, when these videos came out many people who were against abortions in the first place, argued for the defunding of the organization because they didn't want their money being used to pay for something they don't support. Their executives vehemently denied the

The Hardships of Immigrating to America

"But then I came to the conclusion that no while there may be an immigration problem, it [is not] a serious problem. The really serious problem is assimilation" (Samuel P. Huntington). The late Samuel P. Huntington was a political scientist who had attended Yale University, University of Chicago, and Harvard University respectively and was awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship for Social Sciences of the U.S. and Canada. Huntington developed a clash of civilizations theory where the future international conflicts were anticipated to come from cultural disputes. "Living in America: Challenges Facing New Immigrants and Refugees" by Katherine Garrett and Robin Wood Johnson Foundation is a focus group study that explains the common challenges immigrants encounter when they come to America. "Aria: A Memoir of a Bilingual Childhood" by Richard Rodriguez is a narrative of the author's childhood as he and his family learn to speak English and become more comfortable

American Exceptionalism in the Cold War (1947-1961)

Introduction When I first sat down and researched into American exceptionalism I discovered an idea that was complex in not just its definition but also its understanding. I quickly learned I was researching something that spanned political, historical and religious backgrounds and tapped into the heart of the American attitude most recently seen in Obama's election victory speech of "yes we can".1 Despite this, the president recently appeared to be hesitant to proclaim views of support for exceptionalism. Asked by a reporter in Strasbourg, France, whether he subscribed, as his predecessors had, "to the school of American exceptionalism that sees America as uniquely qualified to lead the world," the president began by observing: "I believe in American exceptionalism, just as I suspect that the Brits believe in British exceptionalism and the Greeks believe in Greek exceptionalism."2 His words were a far cry from a "Lincolnian" rhetoric depicting

The Lottery - Tradition Symbolism

Normally when one thinks of winning the lottery, they don't think their entire community, including their family, will brutally stone them to death as a human sacrifice so their town can have a plentiful corn harvest. "The Lottery" has many ways of symbolizing different ideas; out of all representations, tradition seems to be the most important. Throughout the story, tradition is symbolized and shows us how sticking to tradition can actually be quite pointless and cause unnecessary problems in society. Seemingly the most prevalent symbol of tradition is Old Man Warner. Old Man Warner, the oldest in the village, has witnessed 77 annual lotteries in his lifetime. Throughout the story, Old Man Warner shows his dissatisfaction with the modern lottery. He represents how unwilling people can be when they have grown up with a certain tradition, and he views it as an absolute necessity for the town to partake in this outdated and ridiculous ceremony. When Mr. Summers tells him

Verdant explain that these two families have the same income, they live in the same neighborhood, and they have a similar housing situation. As many know, diabetes is nowadays a very common disorder consider as the seventh leading cause of death in the United States (American diabetes Association, Statistics about Diabetes). Cinematography Techniques

Camera Shots The director and the director of photography in a film set are the ones that are responsible for where the camera is placed. This is probably the most powerful decision that they make, the most boring thing they can do is just set the camera up and start recording. They generally don't do that, they put the camera in two interesting positions to try to create a meaning. Establishing Shot The purpose is to show the setting, the camera's usually a long way away from what's actually being filmed, to establish where we are, what we're looking at and what the setting is. Long Shot Little bit closer than establishing shot, shows the entire body of the actor and often a lot of the surrounding environment. The reason it is used is to try put the character in a setting. Full Shot It shows the full body of the actor, trying to show the entire character, showing the costume, what sort of body type they have or what sort of stance they're using. This one keeps the audience out of distance. Mid-Shot It shows the top half or half of the actor, mid between long shot and close-up. Closer to the actor. Close-Up Focuses on just one part of the body, usually face

Film Analysis - Psycho

Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho released in 1960 was one of the films that shocked the audience in a way that was never done before. Hitchcock shocked the audience by showing them nudity, the amount of money that was involved on screen and Norman Bates as a villain. The writer counts Psycho as a classic film in my film library. The film involves key aspects that make it the film that it is today. Some of the key aspects are cinematography, editing, sound and mise en scene which make the film extraordinary. The writer will be mainly discussing about the cinematography aspect of it but the writer will be inter-linking with mise en scene, sound and editing since all of them form a sort of a web that relate to each other and one cannot exist without the other. "The point is to draw the audience right inside the situation instead of leaving them to watch it from outside, from a distance. And you can do this only by breaking the action into details and cutting from one to the other so that each

Novel Summary - Tar Baby

"Tar Baby," by Toni Morrison, manages numerous issues and subjects. However the focal point of the novel is the contention between its fundamental characters Jadine and Son. Really, the author has figured out how to portray an incomprehensible circumstance when two persons adore one another, or they say they do, however they cannot generally be together as one due to the emotional contrast in their perspectives and impression of the world. Truth be told the distinction in their philosophies turns into the principle issue that isolates them and make their affection essentially unimaginable and bound to fail. Keeping in mind the end goal to better comprehend the essence of the relationship of Son and Jadine and the primary driver of their contentions, it is important to altogether break down what sort of identities each of them were and what makes them so diverse that they cannot be together. Above all else, it ought to be said that Son and Jadine are completely distinctive individuals,

My Career Goals - Athletic Trainer

Throughout my life, I've always wanted to be an NFL superstar; one of the best players on the field. My friends and I, when we were kids, have always dreamed of it and the experience. About going to the super bowl and making the clutch plays to put your team in the lead and how great it would feel on draft day with fans cheering your name in the crowd. Just a couple years ago football was my life, I started on the football team as a wide receiver, but before the season started in practice, I got blind sided by my teammate. This isn't the first time that this had happened because the year before that the same thing happened and I ended up with a concussion. So whine happened this time around I knew that I had another. I went to the doctors, and they told me that throughout the course of 6 months I have had five concussions and another blow to the head like that I could receive serious brain damage maybe fatal. The doctor told me that I could never play football again so from there on I changed my w

A Monster in the Mirror: Mary Shelley

During her stay at the Villa Diodati, Mary Shelley dreamed of a "hideous phantasm of a man stretched out... on the working of some powerful engine... [it shows] signs of life, and stir[s] with an uneasy, half-vital motion" (Buzwell 2, Shelley 19). This was the beginning idea of her world-famous novel, Frankenstein. In the nineteenth century, for a young woman to choose the hideous science fiction idea of using dead body parts to create a living being was unheard of (Franklin 2). Society would view her as "abnormal;" however, Shelley's persona differently because of the intelligence implemented into the novel. Shelley received astounding education in science, literature, and philosophy from her father (Discovering Authors 3). She used this knowledge to write breathtaking essays, diary entries, and novels at a young age, including Frankenstein. Published in 1818, Frankenstein follows Victor Frankenstein's triumph as he reanimates a dead body, and then examines his guilt for creating it.
