Popular Protests and the Reform Bill of 1832

The issue of parliamentary reform was a recurring issue through the late 18th century and early 19th century, and it is argued popular protest was central to the Whigs attempt to make Parliament a fairer representation of what was a changing demographic, with events such as the Bristol Riots epitomising unrest at what was viewed as an outdated, corrupt system. Other factors included the weaknesses of the Tories, as well as the Whigs commitment to reform. However it was popular protest that was the key reason behind the Bill's passage – E.P Thompson claimed that before its passing, "Britain was within an ace of revolution." A fundamental reason behind the passing of this legislation was the industrialisation of Britain. The population of towns and cities throughout the country was growing exponentially – in 1801 Leeds had a population of 53,000, which increased to 123,000 by 1831. The increased concentration of people stimulated a demand for a more representative syste

Romanticism and Realism in The Scarlet Letter

Abrams (1999) defines Romanticism as how we believe it should be rather than what it actually is, creating heroes who completely lack human shortcomings and villains who are completely evil. While Realism is just as it sounds. In other words, Romanticism is concerned more with idealistic views of the world along the lines of optimism and opportunity. On the other hand, Romanticism emphasises the story and the plot. Whereas, Realism is more about the development of characters ("Romanticism versus Realism"). Moreover, Realism emphasises more on morality and its place in the community ("Romanticism, Realism and Naturalism). That being said, Nathanial Hawthorne, in The Scarlet Letter, straddles the line between the two realms and creates a 'grey area' with characters that can exist in both realms by means of using ideas from both Romanticism and Realism. The Scarlet Letter can be considered as Romanticism in several different aspects especially when it comes to exotic settings, symb

Political Debate - Chris Christie

On the latest Republican Presidential Debate, Governor of New Jersey, Chris Christie, made an argument to support why he should be the next President of the United States. He stated that during his time as Governor of New Jersey, "We balanced an eleven billion dollars deficit on a twenty-nine billion dollars budget by cutting eight-hundred programs in the state budget". This statement is proven to be false because of the structural deficit he was referring to, a few programs and tax cutting, and the credit ratings of New Jersey. Dustin Racioppi first started working as a Mechanic Mate Second Class for the US Navy from November 2001 to August 2006. He then decided to go back to school and finished general education at Three Rivers Community College for a year, before he went to the University of Connecticut. He was working for the Norwich Bulletin in Connecticut, covering six northeastern towns in Connecticut. On October 2008, he moved to Vail, Colorado and worked for the

Educating Traumatized Children

All parents have dreams for their children. They want their children to be happy, healthy, and successful in life. Parents of traumatized children hope for the same things; however, the steps needed to become successful are very different than the steps needed for a non-traumatized child. These children, because of their complex histories of abuse, neglect, and pre-natal drug/alcohol abuse, have difficulty concentrating, bonding, and fitting into a school environment. It is for these reasons that children that have been subject to extreme trauma are best suited to Homeschooling for at least a short period of time, because it allows for more parent, child attachment and bonding opportunities, and allows the combined age of the child to be addressed, thereby helping to minimizing PTSD reactions better than an IEP or 504 educational plan in traditional k-12 educational settings. Children adopted through either the foster care system or from institutions often have special requirements

Student Characteristics: Good and Bad

The Good: Itś all about actually wanting whatś best for yourself, -Jordan Sams. As long as you have a mindset that you're going to pass an exam, studying for it will easy. I took a minute to think about it after he said that. I would have to admit, part of me really doesn't agree, only because even though I have my mindset that I really need to pass an exam, it still doesn't make it any more easier to study for it. Although, I do agree, that part of it does have to do with wanting what's best for yourself, because I know that if I don't have any motivation to do something then I won't do it. I had a few answers that were all in common. Organization. If you stay organized, it sure does help out so much more than what you think, says my girlfriend Ondrea Busch, Imagine trying to type your paper, then realizing you lost the rubric for it. That takes up so much more time looking for the rubric to start your paper, when you could be already almost done with it. My mom also said somethin

Children and the Challenges of Starting School

In early childhood, children require some considerations to growing socially, emotionally and intellectually. One of these considerations is to evaluate each child individually and create activities appropriate to his or her developmental level. The most important areas of development that must be emphasized are social, personal and emotional skills, as well as academic skills such as mathematics, literacy, expressive arts, and design. In this essay I will be discussing the E219-15J module themes in relation to the Telegraph article written by Liz Bayram. I will be discussing some of the challenges that children face when they start school, I will find and use relevant material and relate this information to Liz Bayram's claims in the Telegraph article. I will discuss how separation anxiety can affect both children and parents when beginning school, how peers and teachers play an important role in shaping children's personal, social, emotional and academic development. I will expla

Gender Roles in the Novel Speak

Readers view texts in perspective, to enable them to understand the books they are reading. Gender roles have been prevalent in our communities for centuries now and they are unfortunately still common; in today's society. The novel Speak , by Laurie Halse Anderson paints a vivid image on gender roles; in today's society. Anderson's work is appreciable at using characters to portray the modern day relationship between men and women. Characters are the central point in the novel and are the personality in the book. Characters are also helpful in developing the themes of the text. Themes are used in stories as a central topic, in the storyline. In the novel Speak, there are many recurring themes such as: mental health, communication, sexual abuse and violence, to name a few topics of discussion. In order for the reader to fully understand and relate to such themes, symbols are introduced analytically. Objects represent a theory or idea. The text focuses on many dark themes and symbols, s

Paying College Athletes

Imagine being a student-athlete in college for four years. There you are sitting in your dorm late at night trying to finish your homework when all of a sudden you get hungry. Now most restaurants on campuses close at ten or twelve o'clock, but you had to skip dinner to go shower after practice. What does a college athlete do in this situation? Many of them simply go to sleep hungry until the next day. College athletes have a heavier burden on their shoulders than regular students. They have to keep up their attendance and grades in the classroom while being present for practice. Student-athletes do not have the luxury of being able to work during their sports' season. Scholarships are not enough to compensate for what student-athletes bring to the table. College athletes deserve to be paid for their efforts and the value they bring to their respective universities. Student-athletes have no choice but to keep their grades up. If they fall below a ce

Hysteria in The Crucible

The Salem witch trials caught the interest of playwright Arthur Miller; he saw relevance in the themes and was inspired to write The Crucible. The characters were drawn from a conglomerate of primary accounts, and based on reality. The play begins with a flustered Reverend Parris praying for Betty, his daughter, who is in a state of comatose. Earlier, Parris had heard a commotion in the forest and discovered his niece, Abigail, and her friends: Betty, Mary Warren, and Mercy Lewis, and Tituba, his Caribbean slave, swaying and dancing in the forest to Tituba's Barbados songs. Parris is shocked by their anti-Puritan actions and sinfulness. He reprimands Abigail, but the situation escalates once Betty's state is attributed to witchcraft. Reverend Hale, the walking encyclopedia on witchcraft, is called to quell the panic-stricken Salemites of their suspicion of witchcraft, but he cannot determine absolutely whether or not there has been some witchery. Busy-body Mrs. Putnam is convinced the

Digital Technologies in Education

Digital technologies form an important part in the education of a majority of the current student population – whom Prensky (2001), as quoted in Gu, Zhu, and Guo (2013), referred to as digital natives. It is imperative for instructors to infuse best practices with digital technologies into the teaching-learning process in order to cater to the needs of millennials. According to Prensky (2010), majority of the current students are digital natives who find traditional teaching methods, such as 'tell and test', not interesting. Although digital natives concentrate on technology-infused activities, such as video games and films, their concentration in class is motivating. This makes it imperative to revise current teaching-learning activities and infuse them with digital technologies in order to motivate students to learn. Best practices with digital technology include project-based learning, individualized instruction, focusing on skills and content, shifting the role of the i

Life Lessons in Big Fish

The movie "Big Fish" is more than an old man's exaggerated tales told to his son of his earlier years in life. It is about the way Edward told these tales to his son, Will, and how these tales have a deeper underlying meaning. His son does not truly realize how these stories teach valuable lessons until he approaches his father and question him why he has told all of these "lies" to him for so many years. His stories are about how long ago as a young man he searched for life in a world that could never satisfy him. Due to his decisions, he was never live in the beautiful and perfect town of Specta. "Big Fish" tells a tale about a man's decision to leave society's dull expectations and chase his own adventure. In todays society we are drawn to a lifestyl

Characteristics of Workaholics

Moderation is a very beneficial characteristic to practice throughout life. Everything you do should be moderate. Even things that are essentially constructive can be dangerous in abundance. Exercising is a very healthy habit to recite daily, but in large amounts can lead to harmful side effects. In this same way, work is an obligation that most people complete daily but too much work can cause negative repercussions. Most of the American population work five days a week just to sustain. Working day after day for a minimum wage job is what society has made us accept. The world revolves around money, and to have money you must work. Some take this a little too literal. These people are called workaholics. Have you ever met someone who every time you see them they're always on the computer working? And if they aren't working they are just talking about working? It seems that society has just become so obsessed with materialistic things that we forget what life is actually about. Expens

Millennials, Accountability and Spirituality

Every generation is unique and known for different things. They are remembered for their accomplishments, major events, and styles of their time. Millennials, who are now either teens or adults, are making a name for themselves. Growing up in a time of great technology advancements defiantly has its pros, but it also has repercussions. In my opinion, Millennials do not possess the same level of accountability and spirituality as older generations. A big issue with Millennials today is that they are simply the least religious generation in America yet. Many of them will say that they are "religious" and "spiritual", but the research results prove otherwise. One study showed that "Millennials are significantly more unaffiliated than members of Generation X were at a comparable point in their life cycle (20% in the late 1990s) and twice as unaffiliated as Baby Boomers were as young adults (13% in the late 1970s)" (PewReligion 1). Religion is becoming less &qu

Themes of Shame in The Scarlet Letter

Shame is a painful sense of having done something wrong, improper or immodest. In Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel The Scarlet Letter, Arthur Dimmesdale struggles to overcome sin, guilt, and public shame in Puritan society. Arthur Dimmesdale reveals his guilt and shame towards the end of the novel when Hester and Pearl stand with him on the scaffold while he confesses his sin to the townspeople. To feel shame or guilt, one must have a clean conscience. Dimmesdale is a good example of this because he is loyal to God, and his shame affecting him physically, emotionally and mentally represents that he is a good person. One should not feel shame if one behaves according to one's own beliefs or instincts. Dimmesdale's mentality is affected severely by shame. Mentality affected by shame is caused because when the conscience constantly reminds one what has been done, and remorse is felt. At one point, Dimmesdale goes to the scaffold during the night to confess his sins, shows signs of his state

Discovering Literature, Finding Me

Literature links all lives together across the globe simply through a story. This story is about pain, love, family; it's the idea that people can express themselves though black ink on paper. Growing up, I loved to read. I have read everything from every golden book as a kid to every Mortal Instruments and Nicholas Sparks novel to date. The letters of each book, each page, each sentence, seem to dance around the page, leaping and twirling into the basis of my secret drawer of bundled imagination. From my earliest years, literature has always had a big influence on my life. As a little girl I read book on princesses in towers waiting to be save by their knight and shinning armor, waiting to sweep them off of their feet. Those stories have influenced my idea of a future husband. I read my first chapter book in third grade and never slowed down after that. Whatever chance I would get during the school hours of Pre-school I would find a nook and read until my teacher found me, and

Composition of the Earth's Atmosphere

The early Greeks considered "air" to be one of four elementary substances; along with earth, fire, and water, air was viewed as a fundamental component of the universe. By the early 1800s, however, scientists such as John Dalton recognized that the atmosphere was in fact composed of several chemically distinct gases, which he was able to separate and determine the relative amounts of within the lower atmosphere. He was easily able to discern the major components of the atmosphere: nitrogen, oxygen, and a small amount of something incombustible, later shown to be argon. The development of the spectrometer in the 1920s allowed scientists to find gases that existed in much smaller concentrations in the atmosphere, such as ozone and carbon dioxide. The concentrations of these gases, while small, varied widely from place to place. In fact, atmospheric gases are often divided up into the major, constant components and the highly variable components, as shown in Table 1 and Table 2. Table 1

The Chancellor of Great Britain

The Chancellor of Great Britain, Sutler, orders the crush of anyone who will speak against the government that is a clear indication of fear and terror. The fact that Sutler is willing to do anything, to capture V, who is the one injecting dissent in Great Britain, even to the extent of having his party scolded every time especially the party leader-Mr. Creedy is also an indication of fear. The high chancellor ordered Gordon Deitrich's execution after a satire tv show that made fun of the high chancellor. The government prohibits the Qur'an, as well as subversive paintings and homoerotic photograph which are forbidden by the government. This prohibition of certain materials are examples of how the government uses censorship to limit deliberately what the public will see to maintain power. Denial of basic human equality is when Muslims and other people of the society considered as "undesirable" were sent to concentration camps. The promotion of hatred to a particular group in

Short Story - Delta Flight 9466

"Don't cry, I will be back sooner than you think." "What if you get shot or get seriously hurt, then what huh?" Alexis, my girlfriend snapped back instantly with. I reached over and held her hand, trying to reassure her more that everything was going to be ok. But as I caressed her hand, I began thinking and wondering in my own heart and head if it was going to be ok. Who in their right mind volunteers to do this? As I stuck my hand out the window, the morning's cool, humid air struck my hand lacing through my fingers like a cool mist of sunshine rays, the stars gleaming down on us as we drove closer. I remember thinking and telling myself, "This is really happening," taking a large gulp and exhaling hard again telling myself "today is the day I leave for war." As we pulled up to the airport my stomach instantly sank, I suddenly began to feel horribly ill inside, as sweat began to form on my forehead. My stomach gurgled like an erupting volcano,

Advertisement Essay - Daihatsu Motors

A lot of individuals are familiar with motor vehicle ads that tend to depict women as sex objects or subjects to men. An ad ran by Daihatsu motor vehicle Company, which features a man driving a Hijet MPV clearly depicting the picture. The ad has a headline saying "Picks up five more women than a Lamborghini. Daihatsu Company believes that a man loves having women around and will do anything to make that happen. The ad as illustrated in figure 1 suggests that having the Hijet MPV, a man can be able to pick more women than another man who has a Lamborghini which is known to accommodate a one passenger seat which is not friendlier to a group of women. The target audience in this ad is clearly men. With the Hijet MPV van, a man will be able to drive around picking more women as one wishes like a magnet. This depicts women as subjects. In this case

Discrimination at Its Worst

Prejudice and racism are often used interchangeably, however, they are not the same. Although racism is the form of prejudice that gets the most attention, there are other forms of discrimination that are equally insidious and pervasive. In Willa Cather's novel, My Antonia, Cather creates several groups with distinct characteristics and values in Black Hawk, Nebraska- the town in which most of the story takes place. Citizens of Black Hawk discriminate against other groups by criteria other than skin tone, holding them in contempt and less deserving of basic respect due to their differences. The behavior of the well-established groups toward those they considered inferior reflected the levels and types of bias and prejudice they practiced. By focusing on the behavior of the citizens in Black Hawk, Cather drives home the notion that there are other forms of prejudice beyond racism that need to be understood. The primary form of intolerance depicted throughout My Antonia can be best desc

Cultural and Educational Inequalities

There are many times in our life it happens that we completely change our mind just because we get so much influenced by our surroundings. Cultural influence, social expectation, plays a huge role in people's growth and development. Now a day's television medium also plays a very important role when it comes to educate general public, because this medium is the easiest way we can put our point of views about anything and everything in front of everyone plays biggest role in influence big mass of people. We read many articles about gender inequalities in which because of social expectation image of women is way different than men onscreen and of screen which is very sad. This whole stereotypical mindset about women, poor people and people of different color has immensely affected our educational system. Even female characters onscreen are questioned all the time just because they female. Wh

Loving Your Neighbor

Matthew 5:43-48 states, "Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbor, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; that ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? Do not even the publicans the same? And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? Do not even the publicans so? Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect." The saying "love your neighbor" is commonplace in the world around us today. It is supposedly the duty of all men to love one another, thus making the world a better place. There have been books published that promote the love of the neighbor by God's love for them. To
