Biography of Charles Edward Spearman

Many psychologists have influenced thoughts and given an insight into the psyche. Charles Edward Spearman was a psychologist in London, England born September 10, 1863 and died September 17, 1945 in London. He spent some time as a British officer, and during this time, Spearman came to believe that any vital progress in philosophy would be linked to psychology. He spent ten years at the University of Leipzig, working with others like Wilhelm Windt, the founder of experimental psychology. Spearman tried to start general fundamental laws of psychology. It was supported through his work in determining correlations among mental abilities. He spent time interpreting correlations among lots of variables on the foundation of a specific factor for each variable and a factor common to all. By 1912, he and a colleague developed an order of correlation coefficients separating the numerous acts into the general factor, g, and varying particular factors, s1, s2, and so on. School Uniforms and Dressing for Success

Thirty or forty years ago school clothing was not as big an issue as it is today. While some students argue that uniforms strip their individuality, some parents and academic professionals believe that school uniforms benefit public schools tremendously by solving some of the behavioral problems and creating a better learning environment. Every parent wants their child to grow academically. By enforcing uniform standards, students will distinguish better between "Play time" and "Learning time." [THESIS] Although everyday clothes allow students to create their individuality, all students in public schools (K-12) should be required to wear uniforms because school uniforms would save parents money, create social equalization, and help curb school violence. Student individuality is the most frequent objection to school uniforms. It is interesting that the people that argue about the individuality are not that concerned with more controversial problems. For example, if

Stephen Hawking and the Black Hole Theory

There are many different theories out there of how the universe began and many believe in different things. Many different physicists have tried to prove the beginning of time or the existence of black holes, but none is as acclaimed as Stephen Hawking. He has had the most widespread acceptance of his theories. The question of where, when, and why the universe exists is a commonly pondered question among scientists and average humans alike. The thought of creation comes up in many religions, while at the same time some philosophers believe in evolution and hope to cancel out the thought of a creator. Of all the theories that have been brought forth, none have been proven to be correct. Some modern scientists believe this is because of how long the universe has existed and the possibility that small changes could have taken place. Stephen Hawking himself has brought forth theories of the beginning of time and then later went on to disprove himself. The history of the universe is one of

Racism and Current Events

When you turn on the TV each afternoon there is multitude of news thrown at you; ranging from the war in Iraq, what The Kardashians ate for dinner, or anything else America considers a crisis. If you would have turned on your tv on Sunday March 8th you would have seen a story that sent chills and anger across the nation. That morning a video was aired on Good Morning America that was leaked from a charter bus that transported members of University of Oklahoma's Sigma Alpha Epsilon chapter and their dates to an event. The chapter was then banned from the University of Oklahoma's campus and other Greek chapters were also being investigated. If you Google this story you will find numerous blog posts and webpages expressing their outrage about the whole situation, many of them pointed out greek life as a whole rather than a specific person or chapter. The blame of the negative press is not on the people delivering the news or writing their opinions, it is on the few people who made a decision in which they would talk about it. I understand how it would look to someon

Good Muslim, Bad Muslim - Book Analysis

Mahmood Mamdani's book, "Good Muslim, Bad Muslim," reoriented my perceptions of the Muslim world due to his discussion of Afghanistan. Before reading this chapter, I didn't understand why violence was being associated with Afghanistan because of what was being brought on by the United States. Before you know it, I learned and had no idea how much harm the United States has done to the Afghans. The CIA played a big role in the Cold War because it intervened in the Islamic world by creating an Afghan Jihad. The CIA even made Osama Bin Laden leader of this Jihad, back when he was an ally for the CIA. I can't wrap my mind around the fact that the man who was said to have enforce the 9/11 terrorist attack, is the same man that was once an ally of the CIA. Basically, they funded and helped Bin Laden for what he had accomplished before he betrayed them and became one of our biggest enemies. In United States camps, future Jihadists were taught deadly skills, how to deal with explosives and aut

Graffiti in 1970's New York City

When you go to New York City, you may observe the tall buildings, or the diverse population, or the abundance of McDonalds, but there is one part of the city that is impossible to not notice: graffiti. From huge tags across walls and buildings, to tiny symbols drawn on signs along the street; it's everywhere. With the help of New York's subway system, new art materials, media attention, law enforcement, and vibrant social scene, graffiti erupted in the 1970's and '80's. New York City's graffiti can be traced back to an emergence of two writers in Philadelphia named, "Cornbread," and, "Cool Earl." Throughout the 1960's, these two underground graffiti artists were known for using black markers to display their nicknames all over walls in the city. It wasn't until 1970 that the practice of graffiti was brought to New York City. Graffiti writers, TOPCAT-126 and JULIO-204, are often credited for carrying the art from Philadelphia to Washington Heights, a neighborhood in

The Gothic Style in Old English Literature

Edgar Allen Poe did not invent the gothic mode of writing, but from the first few lines of "The Fall of the House of Usher" it is evident that he completely adopted the style. Although always descriptive and colorful, nearly all gothic stories provide dark themes such as despair, death, and loss. Even where the mood of these stories may seem gloomy or depressing, gothic literature also adds a unique dimension for readers, as it speaks of dark historical themes, such as slavery and aristocratic decay. Poe's style in literary magazines played on this same concept, where the past haunts the present and stories don't have fairytale endings or pleasant, perfect characters. Edgar Allen Poe's application of gothic in "The Fall of the House of Usher" perfectly shows the many ways gothic can be used, as he uses it to make implications on both the theme and setting, and also the historical and cultural aspects of the story. Just as the term "gothic" refers to the

Easter and the Meaning of Lent

The season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and ends with a vigil for Easter. It starts out as a 40 day season of instruction for Christians. Most churches and religions have moved away from the true tradition of this season and a lot of the practices aren't followed today. There is a significant loss of spirituality in the church. While Lent is supposed to be about penance or repairing damage done, people live according to the time they're in and have made season of the Lent more about fun and vacation. Even Christmas and Easter have lost most of their religious affiliation. Lent is supposed to prepare us for the deliverance event of the resurrection. We have lost the true meaning of it and made it about Easter outfits, Easter baskets, and Easter egg hunts. Now the season starts with Ash Wednesday, whose focus should be on our sinful human condition and God's acceptance of us. The week is often begun with a celebration leading up to abstaining from certain foods and activities, but we're more concerned with the cele

Sin - Transgression or Human Nature?

The doctrine of sin unequivocally permeates the Holy Scriptures. Copious declarations about the sin include, "all have sinned and have come short of the glory of God," "your iniquities have separated between you and your God," "whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin." (Romans 3:23, Isaiah 59:2, 1 John 3:9 KJV) However, probably the most notorious of passages in the New Testament must be Romans 5:12 "Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned." Romans 5:12 has been the center of much debate throughout Christendom. Many including Augustine, Luther, Calvin, and protestants today use Romans 5:12 to defend original sin. With this in mind, this paper will then seek to address the true cause of sin as referred to in Romans 5:12, whether propagated from Adam to all his descendant or individual transgression. First, time will be given to demonstrate the importance

After the Cold War

After the cold war had ended, the world had transitioned from bipolarity to a world of many independent nations fighting for hegemony. The United States and Russia had stepped down from their leadership positions and left the world without a true hegemon. To compete with the United States and Russia, smaller nations began to assert their power through "hard power," an approach that involves military power. Therefore, smaller states began developing and researching nuclear weapons. As a nation bordering the power hungry Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea, the delegation of Korea would like to see nuclear deterrence and ultimately disarmament, in hopes of a world free from nuclear use by non-state actors. According to the Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI), Korea has allied with the United States ev

Europe Between 1850 and 1950

Although life in 1850 was very different than life in 1950, many of the events that occurred in or after 1850 helped spark the events that occurred in 1950. Life in 1850 was filled with revolutions, advancements in medicine, technology, economic growth and imperialism. Life in 1950 was filled with war, economic and political change but also improvements of the advancements from 1850. By 1850, Europe had shifted from agriculture to industry. One of the most essential causes for the industrialization of Europe was an increase in European population, better known as Mass Society. One of the causes for this population increase was better health. The public became aware of the unsanitary conditions in Europe like unregulated food and dirty cities and they sought to improve it. Vaccines and advancements in medicine were thus introduced which caused the European population to nearly double. Throughout the 19th century, Europe went through the Second Industrial Revolution. The Second Industr

Increasing Prevalence of Gangs

In today's modern time, not only can you find gangs in inner cities but you are able to find them in suburban areas, rural communities, and basically anywhere around the world. As the years go by, people are seeing an increase of gang violence all over the world due to multiple reasons. For example, based upon the findings done by the FBI, "gangs are morphing, multiplying, migrating and entrenching themselves in order to sell drugs to our kids, shooting up our neighborhoods, invading our homes, robbing our banks and stores, stealing our identities, our money, and instilling fear and violence everywhere they go." From that statement alone, gangs are known worldwide because they are all interconnected. "For some it becomes a mechanism for surviving deprivation and trauma," according to Donna DeCesare, and there has been a dramatic increase number of youths who join a gang over the years. Gangs are recognized as a world issue because they are all interconnected, it becomes

The Effects of Childhood Cancer

Every year there are 13,500 children that are diagnosed with cancer. That is about a classroom full of students every day. Several may think that cancer does not affect many children, but it is the number one disease in children in America. Childhood cancer effects the child more than one may think; it effects them long term, short term, and psychologically. Childhood cancer does not stop affecting the patient once treatment is over. There can still be health complications years after treatment; this is called late effects. They are usually not life threatening, but can cause serious affects in health and quality of life ("Late Effects of Treatment for Childhood Cancer"). Late effects can range in severity and where they affect you. There are three main factors that affect the risk of the late effects. Tumor related factors would be what type of tumor, where it is in the body, and how the organs are being affected by it. The second factor would be treatment related; this all

Branwell Bronte as the Byronic Hero

Tragic events such as Charlotte and Emily Bronte's mother dying before either child had reached the age of five, followed barely three years later by the passing of their two eldest siblings, Maria and Elizabeth, shaped both Bronte sisters' lives drastically. Because of these tragic events, both canonical authors became known for their depictions of a chronically lonely, tragic and devilish character known as a Byronic hero. In Charlotte's "Jane Eyre" the part of Byronic hero is played by Rochester and in "Wuthering Heights," Emily's literary work, Heathcliff is nearly the definition of the Byronic hero. At one point in "Jane Eyre," Blanche Ingram even references a song from one of Lord Byron's famous poems Corsair. This particular poem is about a corsair, or pirate, named Conrad who is one Lord Byron's own Byronic heroes. Many critics have tried to figure out who in the Bronte sisters' lives, could be the motivation behind their Byronic heroes. This essay

Compare and Contrast European Monarchies

King Charles and Oliver Cromwell fought against each other during the English Revolution. One cause of the war was disagreement over religion, specifically that one side was Catholicism, and the opposing side was Puritanism. King Charles and Oliver Cromwell's similar ruling styles despite their different religions show that religion does not have an effect on the way monarchs rule. King Charles was the son of King James. His ruling style was very similar to his father's, in which he ruled as an absolute monarch. However, in England, there was Parliament, which limited the power of monarchs. Parliament was there to make sure that the people of England had a voice. King Charles made it possible for himself to rule as an absolute monarch because he did not allow Parliament to meet with one another (Morgan 42). Charles raised taxes because he desired more money and power. When King Charles hit the point when he could not raise taxes anymore, he went to Parliament to obtain funds that were

The Importance of Play for Preschoolers

The Importance of Play in Preschoolers The role of play in a child's social, cognitive and physical growth is an integral part of development. Playtime helps a child establish a sense of self, how to interact with other children, how to role play and problem solve; the necessary norms of acceptable behavior in society. Researcher Mildred Parten (1932) suggested there were two categories of play; functional and constructive. The aspects of play Parten defined as; parallel, onlooker, associative and cooperative play. Cultural factors also contribute to differences in styles of play. (Feldman, 2014) During functional play, children use toys or objects according to their intended function. A child can pretend to give a doll a bottle, like her mother feeds her baby brother or a car can be driven on the floor. Children choose this activity to entertain themselves and look for new ways to discover uses for a toy. Typically, the play is repetitive and requires movement. This play st

My Stand on Abortion

Abortion is an important social issue, as it would encompass a woman freely giving up on her baby by killing the little creature. Is abortion a choice or is it immorality? Different people have different opinions over it. Few might think that we do not have the right to abort. We do not have by any sense the right to "kill" an unborn baby. Others would like to point out that abortion it's not really a "crime" if it's committed when the fetus has reached 12 weeks. I believe that abortion is wrong, when women commit it for a selfish reason. There are different solutions that a woman might take, so she doesn't have to go through abortion. Abortion is a real alarming problem. Every year all around the world are more than 50 million aborts, and this is a huge moral problem. My standpoint about abortion is developed by a big "No". I would approve abortion only when the pregnant women is facing a miscarriage, or unfortunately has been raped. Abortion is not jus

Master's Degree Letter of Purpose

To Whom it May Concern, My name is xxx and I am interested in pursuing a Master's degree in Secondary Education at my alma mater xxx State University. My journey to my decision to return for graduate work has been shaped by five years of life experiences that have revealed my true calling of being an educator. During my final semesters as an undergraduate in xxx, I realized that while I enjoyed the idea of physical or occupational therapy, I did not enjoy the daily monotony of those careers. I found myself essentially surviving each day of my preceptorship rather than relishing my experiences. As my time as undergraduate came rapidly to a close, I began to look for careers that would not only accentuate my service-oriented personality, but also provide me with daily challenges. Upon my May 2011 graduation, I explored entrepreneurship by owning t

Comparing Christianity and Buddhism

Religion is such a broad subject; however, it's very relaxing to talk about. I believe that religion has a role in creating a sense of belonging. As we have looked at so many religions throughout the course of the semester, there has been one theme that sticks out the most and that's having faith in a deity to acquire salvation. Whether it's in God or Buddha, a person needs to have full belief and commitment to whomever deity they have claimed. My argument is that religion can impact one's life in the way they live their lives and treat others around them, whether it's Christianity, Buddhism or Confucianism. Christianity is definitely an underrated religion. I believe there is a negative connotation that we can get from reading the Bible and it may even seem like a book of rules. He says in Deuteronomy 29:2 that, "Moses summoned all Israel, and said to them, "Hear, O Israel, the statutes and the ordinances which I speak in your hearing this day, and you shall learn them and be

Ownership and the American Dream

The classic "American Dream," is often characterized by home ownership. People memorialize the day they purchased their first car or invested their own money into the stock exchange for the first time. All of these monumental events stem a uniform theme of ownership. The notion of purchasing items to gain, either social class or material objects, is a highly controversial topic. This determination to find out a relationship between ownership and sense of self has troubled philosophers for centuries. Ownership marks certain goals in human society, but can also lead to an individual's downfall. Every eight-year-old has walked to the local toy store, pockets overflowing with jangling coins from their weekly allowance, and has spent hours choosing the perfect object to commemorate their hard work. That glistening new doll or lightning fast car

Marketing Gatorade Propel

One channel issue that Gatorade Propel might face would be the difference in inventory management. While in the United States do a majority of our shopping for a weekly or even monthly basis, other countries might do most shopping on a daily basis. If this is the case, this might skew the distribution channel as to people that purchase products daily could tend to not buy in bulk. This could change the way Gatorade has to distribute their product. Another issue that Gatorade Propel will face in its distribution channel would simply be the lack of highway systems. Shipping in places such as here in the United States, England, or Germany would all be fairly easy due to having a well-established highway system. Gatorade would be able to deliver their products in a timely manor and be able to do it efficiently. However, if they have to deliver their products say, somewhere in South America, certain places within that continent could lack a highway system. This could make it potentially difficult to deliver their low calorie sports drinks. A good highway system allows for a reliable distribution channel,

Education Philosophy Statement

Every student can succeed in the classroom and life, no matter their struggles or initial reluctance and misgivings. Giving a student the right environment for success, and allowing that student to prosper and grow is the most important variable in their journey. A classroom needs to safe, structured, disciplined, respectful, culturally diverse and all-inclusive, and caring. If a classroom has all these attributes, then students will want to come to school, will strive to do their best, and will ultimately succeed. I believe the three tenets that will ensure success for students are allowing their dreams to prosper and grow, supplementing the curriculum by applying and discussing real-world events and situations, and ensuring students show respect and manners to the teacher, faculty, and peers. A student's dreams are what motivates them to strive for success and knowledge and become interested in assignments. If a student is interested and engaged, they will put more effort and time into those assignments, ultimately getting more out of them. Incorporating their dreams into different assignments is what I will strive to accomplish. This takes establis

Family is Like a Senate

"When everything goes to hell, the people who stand by you without flinching - they are your family." - Jim Butcher, Proven Guilty. The purpose of a family is to join a group of human beings by a bond so strong it functions as a whole. Family is a never ending system of support and rejection like a senate in a federal government. In the senate a bill is rejected several times until it has the qualities that will allow it to be passed. In a family a person is rejected until a member possesses the strength, independence and confidence to excel. Being forgiving and loyal to one another are also the characteristics that would qualify a person to be considered family. There is no rules committee to set boundaries for family members. A family is a continuous body. The goal of a family is to pass a favorable "bill." The goal of family is to take a single member, as if a member is a bill and work together until that person is as close to perfection as he/she can get. To achieve this, family

High Fructose Corn Syrup

What is high fructose corn syrup? Why is it in the news so much? Can it really be that bad for our health? These are all questions that are asked frequently by our culture and not too many people actually know the answer. It has come time to get to the bottom of this controversy and separate the facts from the fiction. Back in 1977 a sugar tariff was passed by the Federal government increasing the cost of sucrose otherwise known as table sugar. Because businesses like to save money they tried many different ways to find alternative sweeteners for their foods. One of these other sweeteners was corn syrup. Corn syrup was cheap because of the government subsidies, abundant because of the amount of corn grown locally, and easy to use because it could be mixed with just about any product to give it a little more sweetness to attract consumers. As you have this rise in high fructose corn syrup and fall in table sugar the nation has increased their yearly intake of sugar by about twenty pound

Sevant Leadership in the Christian Church

Leadership is a vastly important trait throughout the various relationships human beings have in interactive structures and progress in various organizations from career plans to church life. All the way through scripture, both Old and New Testament leaders were exhibited as experimental subjects who were successful while also dealing with failures, personal problems, and violent actions from adversarial forces. The fundamental point in all areas of biblical leadership is the dynamic that God is at the foremost pattern of all leadership and that submission to His leadership is the defining line before any additional area of leading can happen. The next important factor in biblical leadership is that one must adhere to and follow the examples that Jesus Christ laid out through His ministry on earth. The final point for effective biblical leadership is the examples and descriptions laid out through the ministry and service of the Early Church and its leaders, especially the Apostle Paul,
