The Gaza War: Israeli-Palestinian Crisis

The Gaza Israel latest crisis is part of a broad and wide intractable conflict existed since 1948 between Palestinians and Israel over land, resources and identity. A chain of events that took place between June and August 2014 were characterized by high escalation of anger and hatred between both sides, which led to the deaths of over 2000 people. I would like to use these four theories and try to explain the events through them: The Threat Narrative, The Appraisal Theory, The Frustration Aggression and The Intergroup Emotions. I would like to demonstrate through them how the media and politicians used threat narratives to manipulate the emotions of their people; and, also how people's frustrations and strong group emotions have led them to support the daily violent attacks against each other, and even justifying the killing of the each other. On June 12, 3 Israeli teenagers were kidnapped and murdered by Palestinian militants of unknown identity. Immediately following the kidnappin

World War II and Australian Alliances

Explain how World War 2 impacted on Australia's alliances with Great Britain, and the United States of America. WW2 began in 1939 which impacted thousands of people and countries. Australia, Germany, Japan, Britain and United States of America were some of the significant countries that played a major role in WW2. Between these countries relationships were built and some were broken. The beginning of the war Australia had a strong relationship with both these countries and was fighting against the axis power, but in late 1940's these relationships changed dramatically. WW2 marked Australia's journey to finding their place in the world map. During early WW2 Australia viewed Britain as their "mother country" which shows that these two countries had a strong relationship since WW1. In September 2nd 1939 after the invasion of Poland Britain declared war upon axis power. After this event Australia similarly got involved in the war because of her status as a dominion of Britain

Argumentative Essay - Sports Injuries

As athletes have gotten larger, stronger and faster over the last few decades we have seen a far greater incidence of traumatic injuries in those athletes. In this paper, we look at the correlation between larger, stronger athletes and the increasing incidence of career and life threatening injuries that are occurring in sporting events. Our belief is that as the athletes have gotten bigger and faster, both the number and severity of injuries has increased. Simply watching the nightly sports news will quickly make you aware of the number of injuries in professional sports and the number of contests that participants miss due to these injuries. These contests missed, be it games or tournaments (in the case of golf) or matches (in a sport such as tennis) can affect the player directly in terms of lost income in individual sports, but often have an adverse effect on the entire team in team sports. The total cost of these injuries runs into the millions of dollars when you cons

The Shooting of Timothy Russell and Malissa Williams

The shooting death of Timothy Russell and Malissa Williams on November 29, 2012 was due to a communication mishap. There was a communication misunderstanding between the officers and Timothy Russell. The officers chased the African American couple that was speeding away from them and fired 137 shots at their car. Specifically Michael Brelo, one of the Cleveland officers involved in this cruel shooting, fired 49 rounds after he had climbed onto the hood of the car Russell was driving. Brelo's shooting was the one that ultimately led to the death of the couple. Timothy Russell and Malissa Williams were an unarmed African American couple who only had an empty Coca-Cola can and several crack pipes in their car (Daly, 2014). Both the couple and the police officers relied on subjective judgment which caused misunderstanding in communication and eventually wrong decision making. Russell had been pulled over for a minor traffic violation by a cop who was guided by racial stereotyping. The cop

My Father's Martial Art by Stephen Shu Ning Liu

"My Father's Martial Art" by author Stephen Shu Ning Liu is an inspirational poem with a well thought out meaning that refers back to a simpler time by bringing a comparison between older times and modern times. Stephen Shu Ning Liu was born in 1930 in Fuling, China, near the Yangtze River. Growing up around the tradition of Chinese poetry and painting, his father and grandfather conveyed many art forms to Shu as a child in the hopes of one day following in their footsteps. The speaker of this poem is a young boy perhaps in his teen years who talks about the return of his father whom has been away living in a monastery practicing the ancient Buddhist philosophy that monks use and to this day still practice in search of finding inner peace and tranquility. The messages that the speaker sends and the underlying struggles that he faces. The speaker does not directly speak to any person but seems to be reminiscing on seeing his father and the knowledge and learning's his father b

Marijuana Legalization: Is it Right for America?

With the decision in Colorado to legalize marijuana not only for medical use, but for recreational use as well and Washington State considering the same, the question arises: Is marijuana legalization right for America? My own view is that in the case of a medical necessity, possibly, if there are no other alternatives, but in the case of recreational use absolutely not. This paper will weigh the pros and cons on each side of this debate and show that although there may be some benefit to legalization, the negative repercussions far outweigh those benefits. One of the premises that advocates for legalization try to make is that it would lessen crime on the streets. Their way of thinking on this is similar to the economic theory of supply and demand. If the supply of a good or service is increased then the demand goes down, resulting in a lower cost for the consumer. Their logic is to make marijuana readily available by legalizing it, which will result in both a price drop as well as a

Infants and the First Twelve Months of Life

A baby boy was born in one winter afternoon. The mother was so happy as soon as she saw her child was born and was put into her arms. Tears streamed down from the mother's eyes as she cried for joy. She thanked God for giving her a beautiful son, the father was also happy to see his son was born into this world so he named his son, Enoch. During the first development stage, a lot of things will happen in a baby's first 12 months of life. Little tiny and "helpless" new-born Enoch will be a person in his own right, able to move around and communicate. According to the textbook (Santrock, 2013), this section gives a detailed description of the baby's growth and physical development in his first year. Enoch's body and brains were learning to live outside the world. As a baby, Enoch was a very curiosity child. This was his first time to see the world and what is surrounding him. He was lying on his soft bed, looking up the ceiling and turned his head side by side to see everything which is surrounding him. As time passed, baby Enoch

Fear and Death in Masque of the Red Death

In, 'The Masque of the Red Death' by Edgar Allen Poe, the short story embodies the fear of inevitable death in a story about Prince Prospero's party being crashed by The Red Death and eventually every single person dies. The short story about an extravagant party hosted by a prince and regardless of the Bubonic Plague that is ravaging the population he still throws his party. Poe's allegory is that no matter how extravagant the party is, no matter how protected the castle may be, and no matter how rich the people are, death will eventually kill everyone and that no one is safe. Poe enforces this idea by using the plague, the 7 rooms & clock, and the masqued Red Death itself. The story starts by describing in detail the symptoms and outcome of The Red Death. Poe writes about the helplessness of the disease and how the outcome will always be death without the aid and sympathy of his

Using Renewable Resources

A small country by the name of Denmark has set the ambitious goal of ending its use of fossil fuels, including in transportation, by 2050. Many question if the country can do this while keeping its current power levels. While some may see this as impossible, Danes see this goal as reachable. The country already gets over forty percent of its power from a renewable resource. They plan to be above fifty percent by 2020. Denmark isn't the only country pursuing more environmentally friendly power sources. Germany has spent a substantial amount of money on wind and solar energy. Germany is currently approaching 30 percent renewable power this year. The problem with these renewable resources is that they render conventional power plants uneconomical to run since wind and solar energy has no cost once installed. Even though there uneconomical, they are still needed as a backup supply for when the sun doesn't shine and when the wind doesn't blow. Governments hesitate to completely abandon power plants, fearing that they will be caught short of energy on a cold, windless night. The governments hav

Prototypes of Design Innovation

In the pursuit of success, having ideas is simply not enough, one must be able to formulate those ideas within reality in order to be truly successful. In this chapter, the writer explains the mode referred to as 'realize offerings,' which consists of mainly five mindsets. To begin with, there is the mindset of reiterating prototypes. The concept of prototypes can be defined as transforming a vague, intangible idea into one that has shape and form. There are numerous prototypes as they are repeatedly created in the innovation process. By doing so, it refines itself over time from an abstract model to a more improved version. For instance, the Wright brothers manufactured a number of prototype gliders as part of their effort to invent the airplane. Consequently, with the reiteration

Terrorism and the United States

The United States and the world have changed significantly in the dozen years since terrorists hijacked jetliners and launched the biggest attack on American since Pearl Harbor. The twin towers of the World Trade Center fell, a portion of the Pentagon burned, America was in shock. Terrorism has affected many people around the world. It has been around for years and is still around now in 2015. Terrorism can be defined in many ways. According to The FBI definitions of Terrorism in the U.S code "International Terrorism" means activities with the following characteristics: Appear to be intended (i) to intimidate or coerce a civilian population; (ii) to influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion; or (iii) to affect the conduct of a government by mass destruction, assassination, or kidnapping; and occur primarily outside the territorial jurisdiction of the U.S., or transcend national boundaries in terms of the means by which they are accomplished, the persons they ap

The Boston Red Sox - A Curse Reversed

For 86 years fans of the Boston Red Sox have suffered through crushing defeat after crushing defeat. Heart wrenching, unbearable losses. Up until 2004 my father and even his father had never lived through a Red Sox World Series victory. Yet every year, they'd set their hopes high and think "Maybe this could be the year". Despite the inevitable let down, my family always faithfully follows the Sox year in and year out. New England is where my family has lived for generations and despite the horrendous losses the sox seemed to always suffer, we still worshiped them. Moving from Connecticut when I was younger and eventually moving 7 other times, left a void in the sense of having a "home". This void was filled by the unity of watching the New England sports teams, where ever we had went. My dad, his brothers and my grandfather would sit around at family gatherings telling stories of the terrible predicament the Sox had found themselves in that particular year. Which

Overview of Aviation Distasters

Introduction Aviation incidents have been occuring ever since planes were invented. Small incidents tend to involve only one cause but the three incidents mentioned here involve a chain of unfotunate events. The three incidents are: The Tenerife Airport Disaster The Mount Erebus Disaster The KAL 007 Disaster These three incidents will be analysed to show the how each small factor played a large part in the disaster that occurred. This is known as 'James Reason's Swiss Cheese Model.' This model is a representation of human error. There are five major 'slices of cheese' (layers of defence) in this model. They are as follows: Decision Makers – Latent failures Line Management – Latent failures Preconditions – Latent failures Productive Activities – Active failures Defences – Latent and active failures [ CITATION Sky13 l 1033 ] Some disasters do not include all of these and others include other factors. Tenerife Airport Disaster This disaster occu

Critical Examination of the EAP Debate

This paper critically examines the varied approaches to teaching English for Academic Purposes (EAP). In particular, it examines Critical Pedagogy, Pragmatic Pedagogy and Critical-Pragmatic Pedagogy in the context of teaching academic writing to university students. This is an important issue as there is widespread debate as to what constitutes effective EAP instruction within the academic sphere. The conflicting perspectives are that a critical approach to pedagogy, with its challenge of current 'implicit and explicit standards' (Cherryholmes: 1988) is most effective. Other academics argue the case of a vulgar pragmatic approach that relies on structure and 'the notions of theory and practice' (Williams: 1983). There is also support for a hybrid approach to EAP learning, known as critical pragmatism. This method encourages the characteristic critical pedagogical challenge of the status quo, while still requiring ideas to be translated and conveyed by means of structured

WWI - Root of Middle East Conflicts

As violence continues in the Middle East, the roots of the conflicts in the area can be seen to originate from World War I. This is important to understanding the modern Arab-Israeli conflict as the culmination of more than a century of hatred on the part of Arabs to compromise with the existence of a Jewish state. Now Muslims and Jews each believe the land in Israel belongs to them. By the beginning of World War I, although the Middle Eastern Conflicts did not play a significant part during the war, the Middle Eastern Conflicts is best understood as a power struggle between Arabs and Jews because of Zionism and Arab Nationalism before WWI, three essential agreements during WWI, and the affects following World War I. Before World War I, the declining Ottoman Empire had two rising movements that would begin the conflict in the Middle East. The first movement is Zionism which called for a nation state for Jewish people. "Palestine was simultaneously the scene of a confrontation w

Las Madres de Plaza de Mayo

The period between1976 and 1983, in which Argentina is considered the "Dirty War". It was one of the cruelest wars that Argentina had ever experienced. The period was named the "Dirty War" because of the lives that were destroyed and violated by the military government. This war was between the left wing supporters of reform and the Argentine Army, who were backed by the right wing and the United States. The ultimate goal of the "Dirty War" was to force people to support the conservative identity and patriarchal ideology.1 Those who were opposed to the military were considered communist and disrupter of the peace. During the period of the "Dirty War" those who spoke against the military government disappeared without a trace. The people responsible were the Junta leaders and generals, who were in the military. They were responsible for the disappearances of thousands of people in Argentina. These disappearances led the mothers of the missing to c

Automobile Manufacturers - Nissan and Toyota

Nissan and Toyota have been rivals for an extended period of time in the auto industry. They are both at the top of the Japanese auto industry. Which one is better? That is a very difficult question to answer because everyone has their own opinions about cars. Many car experts to this day still cannot answer this question because they are very similar in various aspects. What experts compare is the rivalry between their most iconic cars, the Nissan Skyline R34 GTR and the Toyota Supra TT, they also compare total sales and customer reviews. The two most iconic Japanese cars are the Nissan Skyline R-34 GTR and the Twin Turbo Toyota Supra. Car enthusiasts around the globe dream of having any one of these cars. They are built for racing. Anthropology - MasterChef USA

MasterChef USA is a reality TV show adapted from the original UK version of the show also called MasterChef. This TV show debuted on Fox Television Network and continues to be renewed by Fox. MasterChef is a cooking show that orchestrates professional cooking competitions, which are open to amateur and home chefs. The judges on the show are culinary masters such as Gordon Ramsey, a Scottish born British chef, who has been awarded sixteen Michelin stars. The other two judges are equally qualified as culinary masters. MasterChef reflects the state of our society in the 21st century; our perception of food, preparation of it, and how we consume it. It shows how food has evolved over years of innovation, prosperity, and growth in our population. MasterChef is an ideal example of identifying whether class racism or even racism is still prevalent in our society. Gordon Ramsey is a model of someone who has persevered through the challenges life threw in his way. He had not a penny to his name, but he made something of himself by pursuing his dream. As cliche as it sounds this show is inspirational to tho

Ancestral Redemption in Literature

"When parents eat unripe grapes, the children's teeth suffer"(Ezek. 18.21). In Romeo and Juliet, Wuthering Heights, The Count of Monte Cristo, and Tale of Two Cities, a recurring theme is how children act as "agents of redemption" for their parents. These books not only explore the theme of "Sins of the Father," how the younger generation "has to pay" for the actions of the older generation, but they also look at how the younger generation can act as a means of salvation for their parents. In William Shakespeare's brilliant tragedy Romeo and Juliet, the title characters Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet redeem the mistakes of their families and end a centuries-old feud between their families. The play begins with the Chorus saying, "Two households, both alike in dignityFrom ancient grudge break to new mutinyWhich, but their children's end, naught could remove"(Pro.1-112). Shakespeare deliberately does not begin the play by talking abou

Social Media and Sports

Abstract Sports has been around for a long time and can be seen everywhere. Thanks to improvement of technology the media has a big influence on how someone watches sports and the participation in activities. Games are played at parks, rec centers, and different facilities. When it comes to watching and keeping up with sports it can be watched anytime of the day and almost anywhere. With how technology is sports can watched online on a computer, IPad, and a smartphone where before sports was just watched on TV and read about in newspapers and magazines. Even if someone is not a big fan of sports it's not hard for them to keep up with what's going thanks to social media. The way mass media is today, sports news and information can be communicated to millions of people within a matter of seconds. Not only does the media effect how someone can watch sports, it also helps influence the way someone looks at a sport and the expectations on athletes. Depending on what an athlete post on soci

Football: The Consequences of Passion

I started playing football in high school. Since stepping on that field freshman year, I've known that it will forever be my favorite sport. My performance during my first game prompted my coaches to deem me captain of the freshman team. I was told about the danger of the sport, the potential for concussions, and even neurological damage. I didn't care. I could die tomorrow playing a sport that I hate, all the while wishing that I continued to do what I love. Research shows that long-term football play poses a severe threat to mental health. Studies conducted at Boston University found that fourteen out of fifteen deceased NFL players suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE which is a severe degenerative brain disease often seen in NFL players (Football Injury Claims Web). Additionally, researchers at Loyola University Medical Center found that seemingly benign, recurrent hits to the head – such as those experienced by NFL players – may put people at risk

Unequal Weight, Unequal Pay

The author is attempting to achieve an understanding of what, if any, relationships exist between the inequalities of pay between obese and non-obese members of the working class. Further, she wishes to answer two specific questions in relation to the basic premise of the research study, being whether discrimination is to blame for the inequality that the study finds present and if there is a difference in the inequality based on gender. Mason builds on two previous studies, those of Cawley (2004) and Baum and Ford (2004), to further her argument and finds substantial evidence that not only is there an inequality based on weight discrimination, but a further discrimination when combined with gender. There are both strengths and weaknesses to this article and its findings. The most obvious strength is that it builds off of two main studies, as mentioned prior, and incorporates data and findings from several other stu

Legalizing Prostitution in America

Today Americans face a lot of political issues because of government decisions. The land that we live in is unjust and control the people within it. We as American are suppose to have freedoms such as speech and religion, but find ourselves restricted because it may be unjust or morally incorrect. Fact, people have sexual relations with others and is a given right with everyone and anyone of their choosing. The question is how come when a woman specifically has sexual relations with someone and is paid and slapped with a title of prostitute it is considered illegal, immorally incorrect, and causes tax payers to pay for it? Prostitution is taken the focus of what really needs to be solved in America, doubling up our law enforcement duty, and should be legalized. Prostitution has been a lifelong battle that has been fought by states and their law enforces for many years. Women sell their bodies on the streets for a quick buck primarily, because they feel like they cannot make it in the

Failures of the Weimar Republic

After World War I, the emperor and military commander of Germany relinquished their political power, leading to its ultimate transfer to the hands of the German Social Democratic Party. This was a large groups of "moderate" Marxists that pushed for socialist reforms but not the great changes of property and wealth management that the Bolsheviks of Russia had worked towards. Under their almost complete control, the era of the Weimar Republic of Germany began in 1919. This was a parliamentary democracy that gave universal suffrage, even to women. However in just 14 short years, the Weimar Republic fell under the leadership of Adolf Hitler. The Weimar Republic had deep rooted issues since its beginnings and the near end of its time brought about new factors had tied everything together for its collapse. Although these issues are numerous and complex, they can be well summarized as World War I outcomes, political conflict, economic depression, and the rise of Hitler. Although th

From Resistance to Revolution

The period preceding the American Revolution offered us real causes for the American Revolutionary War and its independence. There was not only colonists' effort that contributed to the establishment of United States as a separate nation from Great Britain, there was also British influence existed and contributed equally much to it. So, it could even be said that Great Britain was responsible for the American Revolution and its outcome. Mob action in North American colonies, one of the most important factors especially in the earlier Revolution phrase, was a long-time tradition adopted from its mother country, Great Britain, where it was very common especially during the 17th and the 18th Century. In England, there were several traditional and customary roles of mob. First, it served as a complement to the existing system rather than a replacement to it; its role was to fight for interests for people when no alternative was available. Maier stated that "Uprisings over local issues
