The Great American ExpansionThe debates that took place over the American expansionism, in the 1840s, are both similar and different of those that took place in the 1890s. American expansion was constantly happening throughout the entire 19th century. A drastic difference, between the 1840 and 1890, expansion was where the United States aimed to expand themselves toward. The Spanish-American War and the Mexican-American War both also were differences in the two American expansions. During both expansions, the United States and the population were hungry for new territories and land to acquire. They also wanted to add a larger population to the census, in favor of the United States. The Manifest Destiny, occurred during the 1840 expansion, was different then the New Manifest Destiny, occurred during the 1890 expansion. The Manifest Destiny was looking to acquire New Territories throughout the Continent of North America. The Democratic and Im |

Settings in A Midsummer Night's DreamIn novels, setting often contributes to the action and themes of a play. Novels can have more than one setting showing different themes of the novel. With changes in setting the themes of the novel can change from being strict to more freedom. Setting can also change the action of a novel from being dull and boring to excitement. In the play, A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare, Shakespeare contrasts the settings Athens and the forest to display different action and themes inside the play. Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream lays out how the setting of Athens shows the harsher side of the play. Athens shows the harshness of A Midsummer Night's Dream with very strict laws. Shakespeare displays Athens organized side by, "I beg the ancient privilege of Athens. As she is mine, I may dispose of her-Which shall be either to this gentleman Or to her death-according to our law Immediately provided in that case." (1.1.41-45). Shakespeare shows how the setting of Athens displays how harsh and strict the lives of Athenians are in Athens by Egeus demanding Hermia either ma |

Book Review - The Conviction to LeadConvictions are beliefs that we hold strongly to; those firm foundations that direct our lives and actions. Without convictions we cannot be efficient leaders; our steadfastness to our beliefs will permeate into our leadership abilities and the way we manage. Al Mohler is the president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary; he holds a master's of divinity degree and the doctor of philosophy (in systematic and historical theology), and has authored over a dozen books. His goal in writing "The Conviction to Lead" was to, "Change the way one thinks about leadership. I do not aim merely to add one more voice to the conversation about leadership, I want fundamentally to change the way leadership is understood and practiced" (Mohler, 2012, p. *). The purpose of this book was not to add another voice to the many that are vying for the ears of the people, but to be a voice that changes the way we view leadership. The Changing Global EconomyGlobalization is the topic of 21st century that we cannot forget to mention in political science. Our society has become interdependent with each other in many ways through things like trade, technology, culture, and immigration. In a personal level, globalization has led people to be connected throughout the world regardless of their proximity using the most recent technologies, which resulted in making our world a smaller place. For example, one can easily communicate with others face to face, using their computers, tablet PCs, and mobile phones. In a more global level, globalization connected most of the nations together in a way that one country's action will have an effect on other countries, however big or small the effect may be. This phenomenon is called interdependency; and an example of interdependency would be when East Asian countries faced the Asian Financial Crisis altogether beginning in 1997, making the situations even worse because all the neighboring countries were ec |

The American Scholar by Ralph Waldo EmersonIn the excerpt we read from Ralph Waldo Emerson's The American Scholar, it seemed as though Emerson's main goal was to create an extremely complex and overly-wordy written piece to confuse the reader. Upon deeper examination, however, Emerson's writing takes on a new life as he explains the importance and significance of books and knowledge. Emerson's writing is like solving a puzzle, but for those who understand his unique style, will see many good points and facts as to why writing is so important. The piece discusses the impact that books can have on our everyday lives, if we put the time in to understand them. The passage begins by telling of the immortality of books and the importance of even the oldest works. Emerson begins the passage by stating, "The next great influence into the spirit of the scholar is the mind of the Past." This one line perfectly displays one of Emerson's main points throughout the piece. By reading, people get to experience what others have lear |

n-Butyl Bromide Organic Chemistry Lab ReportAbstract The percent recovery of n-Butyl bromide by nucleophilic substitution and extraction was tested in the current experiment. Sodium bromide was reacted with n-Butyl alcohol and sulfuric acid, forming n-Butyl bromide via an SN2 reaction mechanism. Reflux was used to condensate the vapors and return the condensate back to the system allowing the mixture to be heated to an elevated temperature for an extended period of time without the loss of material. Since n-Butyl bromide is immiscible in water, the method of extraction by differing solubilities was used to separate the water miscible components. The starting materials were weighed, and the product was weighed to calculate the yield. The amount of product (n-Butyl bromide) collected was observed to be 11.09g, while the theoretical yield was 14.97g. The percent yield was calculated to be 74.1%% recovery. Achilles and Beowulf: Warriors of Boundless StrengthThe stories of Achilles and Beowulf are transcendent tales that carry threw age by age. The authors of such tales wrote in elegiac way in order to paint the portrait of the hero that would stand the test of time. Achilles and Beowulf are two very different heroes from two diverse cultures. These cultures imprint a special aspect onto the characters in order to reach the audience of the land and to set an example to the people of a true legend to live their life like. Homer and the author of Beowulf present two heroes from different societies that share the common heroic trait of superhuman strength, but each author differs the representation by demonstrating the hero's strength in varying ways and creating different motives for each hero. The craftsmanship of these stories is extremely important to the overall heroic effect that grasp the reader's mind and throws them into the tales of these great figures. In order for both Homer and the author of Beowulf to achieve their glorious hero they had to get the intrigue of their audience. Beowulf for example shows his strength in multiple ways. The first is his boasting of accomplishments to the Danes upon |

Boo Radley - To Kill a Mockingbird"He was about six-and-a-half feet tall, judging from his tracks; he dined on raw squirrels and any cats he could catch, that's why his hands were bloodstained- if you ate an animal raw, you could never wash the blood off. There was a long jagged scar that ran across his face; what teeth he had were yellow and rotten; his eyes popped, and he drooled most of the time". This was the perception of Boo Radley from the one of the children in Maycomb County. Boo Radley is the ghost of Maycomb County, or so the children believe. Most children run when they pass in front of the Radley home, fearing that Boo Radley will come and get them. No one dared to walk by, or even come close to the Radley house at night. The Finch children did the same as all of the other children did; they ran past the house instead of walk past it and they dared not go near it at night. But one of the children couldn't help but be curious about Boo Radley, and that child was Jem Finch. Jem enjoyed telling hi |

The Concept of Tone in LiteratureWhen someone is interested in finding a new book to read, they have several options to look into to help them decide on a book. They may search for book's synopsis online or maybe ask a friend for a recommendation. One that seems to not be sought as often is the bit of text usually seen on the back cover of a book. Here, the author tries, in a paragraph, to persuade that passerby to purchase their book and read it. The Greek philosopher Aristotle separated the ways of persuasion into three categories – Ethos, Pathos, and Logos. The way a writer sets the tone in their stories is the best technique to draw the reader in and read everything. In James Baldwin's "Sonny's Blues" and Charlotte Perkins Gilman's "The Yellow Wallpaper", both authors incorporate vivid language and numerous sensory details to appeal to the reader's emotions and therefore reel them in. James Baldwin, having lived as a gay, black man in the time that he did, fully understands the meaning o |

The British Industrial RevolutionThe Industrial Revolution means a time when rapid major changes in an economy started and changed how people lived completely with new inventions and ideas, maybe changing a country from being agricultural to industrial. The Industrial Revolution had good and bad consequences. Britain, located in Europe, was the first to experience the evolution of what was called the industrial revolution during the early 1800s, giving Britain a head start over the whole world that were still being agricultural. This was why "By 1815 Britain was the most powerful empire in the world." (Quote from Professor Jeromy Black, a British historian). The Industrial Revolution added or changed Britain in these ways: many new inventions, ideas, and advances were made and built; Britain child labor was increased; and pollution and contamination spread everywhere in Britain. The Industrial Revolution started and lasted in Britain from about 1770-1850. Many inventions, ideas, and advances in different fields like transportation and engineering had occurred. Many of the inventions made during this time usually used coal and iron. Coal and ir |

Thoreau's Perceptions on EconomyThroughout the first chapter of Walden, "Economy", Thoreau states his justifications for leaving society behind in an attempt to show people that life can be lived with bare necessities and still be wholesome. Thoreau claims that his attempt at Walden Pond is nothing more than a two-year experiment that tries to illustrate the benefits of living a simplified life. He specifically tells us what things he was trying to leave behind and why he chose to leave those things with society. In order to better understand Thoreau's disposition to society and inclination to simplicity we must look closer at the point he was trying to convey to the townsfolk of Concord, Massachusetts. In this paper I hope to discuss Thoreau's perspective on simplicity throughout Walden, but more specifically I will be focusing on his first chapter "Economy". In the first part of "Economy" we see that Thoreau is already riled up about inheritances; especially relating to homes, |

The Kant PhilosophyImmanuel Kant was a German philosopher who was part of the enlightenment in the late sixteen hundreds. Kant proposed many ideas during his life time, but one of the most argued is the categorical imperative. The categorical imperative states; act only on that maxim which can become a universal law. When given the argument, "I will not pay my debts whenever it's in my interest to do so". This maxim isn't able to be a categorical imperative because it cannot be a universal law. We ought to pay or debts whether it is in our best interest or not. Kant's moral theory is deontological which means that actions are morally right in virtue of motives, which must derive more from duty other than from inclination. It is our duty to pay debts. We ought to do it because it has the ability to be a universal law. Ought does not imply is, but it does imply can. When we tell someone they ought to pay their debts it is not going to make them do it, however it does imply that you can do that |

Compare and Contrast - FOX NewsBBCAlthough Fox News and BBC reported on the same topic BBC was a better article due to its references of past events and contacts in Cuba. BBC really focuses on prisoners. BBC makes it clear that this wasn't just a request to release these prisoners but this was a negotiation, without that information we would think that the United States was just getting something they wanted. Last BBC talks to representatives from the Island who are known activist, these sources are directly from the Island unlike Fox's references. In the article that BBC writes it is referenced several times that there is some past history between the United States of America and Cuba. For example "Last month, the two countries said they would restore diplomatic relations severed since 1961." which shows that it has been 54 years since the two countries worked together an exact year is always important especially when it comes to things like this, because leadership changed in 2006 Fidel's younger brother took control as Cubas leader. Democracy is India's Achilles HeelDemocracy as a form of government has been viewed through the prism of western liberal ideological thought. This has resulted in the critics of Indian democracy emphasizing the unique limitations on its operation and considering it India's weakness rather than strength. However such critiques ignore the democratic underpinnings of the Indian political system and the distinctive context of its establishment. Democracy is essential to address India's developmental challenges in view of its diversity and need for responsive government. While criticisms of casteism, communalism, criminalization of politics and corruption are warranted, they represent an incomplete process of deepening of democracy rather than failure of democracy itself. An understanding of strengths and limitations of Indian democracy requires a contextualization of its origins, which gave it distinctive characteristics. These resulted from a western democratic political system based on universal adult suffrage being formally established in a developing nation, which has made the former its own over the 68 years of operation. In 1947, universal suffrage became a vehicle for empowerment in an Indian society still |

Capitalism in G'ming by Kathy PageKathy Page's short story "G'ming" is about capitalist myths and their effects on people. Without knowing, the characters of the story are subtly influenced by certain social classes myths. these influences happen smoothly and they are not easily spottable. However, looking closer into the beginning of the story where Aeui helps the tourists couple, it is understandable that the dissatisfaction of Aeui and the tourists, despite the fact that they both finally achieved their goal, is a result of bourgeois and proletarian myths's influence on the characters. These influences on the character's behaviours strongly suggest that capitalist myths alienate people and are destructive to their relationships. Aeui, the 16 year old main character of the story, is a symbol of lower class society. In contrast, The tourists visiting G'ming, represent bourgeois. Capitalist society purposely creates certain myths among people to achieve certain goals. This effect on people occurs extremely |

My Life in ExileIn my life I have felt exiled. I believe everyone in their life at one point seems left out or exiled. It's not always a bad thing though, like in my case, my exile experience is the reason I am here at NS. It might have been rough getting to where I am but it was truly worth it. It made me learn life lessons that I will never forget. Feeling exiled by my family put me through hell and back but I still came out stronger. That's how I learned that things always get better so there is never any reason to be down on yourself It all started when my mo first met my step dad, it was right before my 4th birthday that she introduced us. I can't remember much about him until we moved in with him in Delaware before my 6th birthday. That's when the shit storm of my life started. Imeditly things changed my mom just acted different and my step-dad would always be an asshole that's all I ever saw him as even up to this point. The Tragedy of SuicideEach of us has a story that we want to share with the world; the story that we held back to ourselves. This story influenced us in a way that we can't go back to our old selves. Our perspectives, attitude, opinions and thoughts have changed. We can never go back. Sometimes, we live in the world and don't know how happy we are and complain on our problems in life while others are really suffering from serious struggles in their life. Every life experience has an impact on us or somebody else that we know and this is what makes life interesting is that we learn from each other. Suicide is a tragic thing that someone can experience in their lives and, I think, the reason is that the person may feel alone, depressed, confused in their life, don't have a purpose to live for. Some people think about suicide but they don't understand how wrong it is. They don't realize that there are people that love and care for them. There are various reasons that can lead to suicide such as withdrawal |

Reasons for Doubt in Descartes' First MeditationThroughout Descartes' Meditations on First Philosophy, the narrator, or Meditator, isolates himself in order to think clearly and develop a new perception on many concepts like the mind, body, and existence of God. Descartes intendeds this book to truly be a meditation, as readers are meant to put themselves in the place of the narrator and mediator in order to experience this philosophical method themselves. Throughout Meditations, Descartes analyzes the epistemological process an individual thinker may follow in order to establish knowledge and beliefs at a level of complete certainty. The Meditator begins by analyzing the accuracy of his current beliefs, while casting into doubt any opinions he may find reason to believe are false. In order to do so, he must first examine the sensory perception through which he has come to know these beliefs and foundations of knowledge. The Meditator acknowledges that if he finds any beliefs to be indubitable, he will be able to use them to |

Markets and Oligopsony and Monopsonistic CompetitionGenerally, oligopsony and monopsonistic competition are market power that focused on the sellers which is the mirror image of oligopoly. There will be deadweight loses because of the presence of market power which distorts the outcome. Oligopsony is a market where there are a few employers who have a large control on the going wage and use the market power to change the end results whereas monopsonistic competition occurs when there is free entry and exit in oligopsony market.(Mankiw, 2011) When the elasticity of the market supply is small, there will be a large difference between average expenditure and marginal expenditure which leads to higher monopsony power. However in oligopsony, buyers can choose to collude or compete among themselves therefore there will be a kinked supply curve. Figure 1: Kinked supply curve in oligopsony (anemecon, 2012) Unlike the perfect competitive labor market, oligopsony or monopsonistic competition's labor supply curve is not perfectly elastic whi |

The George Stinney CaseIt took 10 minutes to convict George Stinney & 70 years after his execution to exonerate him. In March 1944, deep in the Jim Crow South, police came for 14-year-old George Stinney. Without any physical evidence or eyewitnesses, Stinney was charged with the first-degree murders of 11 year old Betty Binnicker and 7 year old Mary Thames in Alcolu, South Carolina. According to the police, the two young white girls were found brutally murdered, beaten over the head with a railroad spike and dumped into a water-logged ditch. Stinney's entire jury was white due to racial segregation; and even worse, his family was ran out of town, leaving young Stinney with no support during his trial. His lawyer, who was no help in the case had never represented a criminal defendant. After a 10-minute jury deliberation, George Stinney was sentenced to Columbia penitentiary to be executed by electric chair. This topic is important and something everyone should know because it spreads awareness of George |

Ethnography and the ClassroomYou miss one hundred percent of the shots that you don't take" (Gretskey, 2008). These words stated by famous athlete, Wayne Gretzky, depict how we shouldn't be afraid to take risks because we are afraid of the outcome of those risks. These words delineate apprehension prior to entering fieldwork experience with the HYPE students these past couple of weeks.. I was so apprehensive to work with these students, as these students were very close in age to me, and I was accustomed to working with students in the elementary grades. Like many others, I had no prior experience working with the concept of ethnography, which made me even more anxious prior to entering the HYPE space. However, this HYPE experiences truly provided me with an experience I shall not soon forget. Art Review - Justinian as ConquerorThe work of art that I chose for my assignment is known as Justinian as Conqueror. It was created during the early Byzantine Empire in honor of his military campaign's victories across Italy, North Africa, and Asia. The dating of this beautiful carved ivory sculpture goes back to roughly 525-50 CE. Emperor Justinian I, sometimes known as "Justinian the Great" or by his Latin name Flavius Petrus Sabbatius Iustiniaus Augustus, was a Byzantine (East Roman) emperor from 525-565. He was a brilliant emperor who when his reign began, territories that had once belonged to the Roman Empire were lost and he is now remembered today as one of the last true Roman emperor by historians because of his military campaigns that sought to bring these historically Roman territories back under the rule of the Empire. He was also known as the last roman emperor who spoke Latin as a first language and also for his efforts to reform Roman Law that resulted in Corpus Juris Civilis, a legal science t |

The Early Unification of Italy1. What factors discouraged an early unification of Italy and how were these overcome? Before the year of 1848, the Italian faced a lot of difficulties to urge the unification movement. Until, 1848, the situation had been changed and directly contributed to the unification movement. After 1815 Italy was once again a mere geographical expression. Austria was to control a large part of Italy directly, that is, Lombardy and Venetia, and indirectly through the restored Bourbon Kings in some minor Italian states. Italian unification was once again frustrated ever the Risorgimento was quickly in advance. The explosion of Austrian power in Italy was the main problem which discouraged an early unification of Italy. Moreover, the general political atmosphere in Europe did not allow new concessions to Italian balance when the powers were concerned with maintaining the balance of power and to prevent the setting of French hegemony in Europe again. So a united Italy in 1815 would only mean French |

Art, Artists and Mental IllnessIf creativity is about imagination and original ideas, defining the word creativity is not creative. So how do we 'define' creativity? In modern society people tend to have systems, structures, organizations and definitions for everything. There are too many definitions of creativity due to the nature of it. According to Gomez in his article, What Do We Know About Creativity? He proposed that we can separate them in three basic categories; First the artistic creativity, focusing on being a creator and reflecting ''inner needs, perceptions and motivations''. Second the scientific/technological creativity, more about environmental sustainability and innovations. Last the hybrid creativity found in fields for example architecture, which ''exhibits both a novel problem solution and the personality of the creator''(32). Creativity is often misunderstood or misinterpreted when discussing its presence in modern society. People make the argument that 50-hour workweeks, and li |

Female Friendship in So Long a Letter by Mariama BâThroughout So Long a Letter, author Mariama Bâ narrates the stories of two African women living in post-colonial Senegal as they grapple with various social, racial, political, religious, and gendered tensions that continually affect their identities and daily lives. In So Long a Letter, Bâ uses an epistolary form to narrate the reflections and struggles of Ramatoulaye Fall, a Senegalese woman writing to her lifelong friend, Aissatou, who now lives in the United States. Ramatoulaye, a recent widow, writes a detailed, intimate letter reflecting on her and Aissatou's roles as women, students, wives, mothers, and teachers, in order to analyze her own life and choices. Ramatoulaye's reflections help her to analyze traditional institutions, inequalities, and the long-lasting effects of colonialism in order to make peace with her past and embrace her future. Through the epistolary form, Bâ is able to show how Ramatoulaye and Aissatou relate to each other's experiences and roles as wome |
