Genie - The Feral ChildA critical period in development is a limited span of time during which an organism is sensitive to external stimuli and capable of acquiring certain skills. Apparently, there is an ideal time "window" in which a language is learned. After that time window, learning the language becomes much more difficult. This is called the critical period hypothesis. The critical period hypothesis states that the first few years of life is when an individual can acquire a first language. Genie, a feral child's, case was one of the first to put the critical period theory to the test. Genie was the victim of severe abuse, neglect and isolation from her father. Genie never learned to speak, and she was isolated from the world for the first thirteen years of her life, so she never learned a first language in her critical period. Genie learned how to use the toilet and how to dress herself rapidly, but she still couldn't pick up on learning a language. If given a much more stable learning |

My Story of Driving Under the Influence (DUI)In life, there are countless lessons to be learned, but I realized there is no better, brutal lesson to be learned than from a horrible mistake. When I was 17 years old, in May of 2014, my happy parents left me the house for the night because they were going to a concert with very good friends of theirs in downtown Cleveland. So, with my teenage-fueled party mentality in full affect, I decided to throw a party at my house. I called a few of my close friends to help me set-up my house. At around 8:30 at night, people started to show up. The total count of people was about 35-40 people at the peak of the party. When it started to die down, me and a couple of my best friends decided to go to Sheetz gas station around 2 am. I had made the choice to get behind the wheel intoxicated. We had all been drinking, and had gotten quite a lot of attention drawn to us at our short time at there. We were being very loud at ignorant by causing a scene. A State Trooper had noticed us and followed me out of Sheetz. He pulled me over a half mile from my house. I took a breathalyze |

Further Developing Intelligent MachinesNowadays, our world has become more and more machine-based, people seem to be very dependent on intelligent machines. Indeed, most of us cannot live without our cell-phones, and what they can help us get done. There are even robots that can do basic housework. Even though as we develop more and more intelligent machines, we might lose our humanity, the foundation of our community, I believe we cannot undermine the significant role machines have played in our daily life and in scientific development. One of the reasons why scientists are obsessed with machines is that they are definitely an enlightening input to our life. As they are helpful and efficient, and can replace tiring workers to do the most challenging tasks. More importantly, just as Perspective Two mentions, they are better than human at extremely precise jobs and seldom make mistakes. Moreover, unlike factory workers, they do not need to be motivated to do a good job. Ever since the industrial revolution in the 19th century, machines have been adopted and used in tons of companies in the manufacturing industry, from the machines that were used to s |

Narrative Essay - Having Knee SurgeryHaving knee surgery on my meniscus was the most nerve racking but rewarding experience that I have gone through. The steps before seemed to be the most nerve racking in the situations such as the X-Rays and MRI. It seemed so tedious setting up appointment to appointment and having to wait a few days in between waiting and waiting for the surgery date. This injury never really caused me pain until after almost a year of playing on it, exercising, and walking on it. Pain slowly started going to the knee after either a long day of baseball or even just walking on. After not being able to put up with it just because of the feeling bothering me when id play I went in to the doctor for a quick evaluation of my knee to see what could have been causing the pain. Going in I expected a simple answer like "it is a minor sprain that needs rest and ice it up" I come to find out that where the pain was coming from, the location, was where |

How the Internet is Changing the Way We ThinkEveryday we see people spending more time online. That time that they are spending online is not always necessary, For example young age are more often online than their parents, but why? Most of the times they are in Facebook or even playing online games. Kids are more online then anyone else because schools this days are getting more and more affected by the internet, you can see by going into a history class room. Teachers used to tell students to look up information in the books. But in this days teachers are given ulrs( websites ) to the students so they can look up information. Every information we look for we are told to go online. This is happening because of the existence of the internet. I c |

The Dangers of SpeedingMahatma Gandhi once said, "There is more to life than simply increasing the speed." To me, this quote is not only about life, it is about everything, including driving. There are many dangers when driving when you're not speeding and those increase tenfold when you are speeding. Speeding is not only dangerous for you but it is also dangerous for everyone on the road with you. When you get in a car and make the conscious decision to speed you are, to put it simply, being stupid. There are very many risks that people take every day when they get in a car, such as texting and simply staying distracted but speeding is one that most people see as a normal thing to do when they need to see it as one of the most dangerous things you can do on the road. There are many things you can do on the road that are dangerous. Speeding is one of the main things that people do and do not even think about but it can be one of the most dangerous because of that reason. Speeding increases the s |

EmergenceArt is a medium that allows people to express their thoughts and feelings on various world issues affecting citizens today through the use of descriptive paintings and drawings. Currently, more and more teenagers are being exposed to and experiencing the negative aspects of the modern world such as the concept of stereotypes and emotional instability. They are beginning to lose their true identity and are falling captive into what is accepted as "normal" in the modern society. The intriguing theme of human frailty has made an appearance in many works of historical and contemporary artists, with some works even causing disturbance within the audience. This exhibition, titled Mutation, is for audiences who like to delve deep and deconstruct the notions behind the human mind and indulge themselves in the darker aspects of art. The artworks included in this exhibition portray various artists' beliefs on human identity and what makes up their own personal and cultural identity, wi |

Views on Professional NursingBefore beginning any nursing courses the thoughts of professional nursing were quite narrow. Any person with the essential education and skills of nursing science would be a professional nurse. Also one should look and act like a professional. Possessing a certain attitude with rigid standards pertaining to morals and ethics. When our education continued we were taught about nursing processes and evidence based theories. Then as we became nurses the idea of professional nursing broadened. With the knowledge and skills that were attained it became evident that as a professional one must be dedicated and accountable in every area that is practiced. After reading chapters one and two in Leddy and Pepper's Conceptual bases of professional nursing it was evident how divided our profession is due to what education we have received. In this essay the readings pertaining to the divide over education and the idea of nursing as not quite meeting the requirements of being classified as a profession will be discussed as thes |

Theories: Divine Command and Natural LawIn my essay I will critically examine the two theories' that examine the relationship between morality and religion. The two theories are The Divine Command Theory and The Natural Law Theory. I will explain each theory and how each one examines the relationship between morality and religion and evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of both. Morality and religion is the association between religiosity and moral codes. Many religions have important structures determining between rights and wrongs and how things ought to be done and what god demanded man to do. The Divine Command Theory is a meta-ethical theory which suggests that an actions rank as morally good is equal to weather it's instructed by God. The simple idea of this philosophy is that God chooses what is acceptable and immoral. In this theory an action God commands is morally acceptable and actions God forbids are ethically unacceptable. It also argues why people should worry about morality. It also elaborates why molar |

Effective Leadership StylesAn important element of studying group behaviors is examining different leadership styles. Leadership styles refer to a leader's characteristic behaviors when directing, motivating, and managing groups of people. In order for leadership to be effective there must be communication and understanding between the leader and its followers (Forbes 2013). Although there may be many variations of leadership styles, sociologists have narrowed it down to three prominent leadership types (Maconinis, Gerber 2014 p159). Firstly, Authoritarian leadership focuses on instrumental concerns, takes personal charge of decision-making, and demands that group members obey orders (Maconinis, Gerber 2014 p159). The leader dictates policies and procedures, and controls all activities without any meaningful participation by members of said group. This leadership style involves absolute control over a group. A second identifiable leadership style is Democratic leadership. This leadership style is more expressiv |

The Crisis in BangkokOne of the world's top tourist destination and Thailand's Capital, Bangkok, often referred as "the City of angels",is the place where I grew up. My city enriches its people with Buddhist heritage and culture. Urban residents and I enjoy the city's rapid development that has brought us more jobs, education, housing, entertainment and transportation. However, not only do we fail to acknowledge negative changes by following a European model of modernization, but we also fail to realize that such development served to only lower our living standards rather than helping us. These negative effects results in water deterioration, land subsidence, air pollution and energy shortage. Our people are being pulled away from agriculture as they become more drawn to greater monetary returns from other industries. Meanwhile, we could clearly see that our local farmers are gradually replaced by the capital-intensive methods of industrial agriculture to meet the foreign demand of our well-kn |

The Tyger and The LambBefore we jump into the 'The Tyger' and 'The Lamb,' let's discuss the larger bodies of work the poems belong to. In 1789, William Blake printed a collection of nineteen poems called "Songs of Innocence" (which contained 'The Lamb'). Five years later, in 1794, Blake printed a collection of twenty-six poems entitled "Songs of Experience" (which contained 'The Tyger'). After this, the two volumes were published together as a collection called "Songs of Innocence and of Experience: Shewing the Two Contrary States of the Human Soul". The title encourages us to consider the 'contrary states' of innocence and experience as we read the poems in both collections. Through a cycle of unanswered questions, Blake motivates the readers to question God. These two poems are meant to be interpreted in a comparison and contrast. 'The Lamb' and 'The Tyger' share two different perspectives representing an innocent and an experienced view of creation and existence. |

The Moral Self-Censorship of SocietyWhen Raphael Oyelade was a small child living with his family in Nigeria, his parents migrated to the United Kingdom. Oyelade regularly explored Art Museums all across his newly settled home, in the National Heritage Memorial Fund's exhibition of Renaissance Artwork he saw Sir Joshua Reynold's Colonel Acland and Lord Sydney: The Archers (ca. 1769) during a visit to Archbishop Tenison's. "That trip formed my beliefs of the importance to change the perspective of the young before they've had their minds set a certain way," Oyelade recalls, adding that his view of his own community developed and was altered through the interpretation of Sir Joshua Reynold's piece of Art. Although minimal, Raphael Oyelade's view of his community was changed by an illustration of two pre-pubescent characters hunting with miniature wooden bows in an unknown forest painted over 250 years earlier, but the themes and messages represented by this illustration had the influence to dramatically alter t |

Finding Motivation to Tackle an AssignmentThere are times when you just don't feel motivated to get up off the couch and do your work. Maybe the assignment staring at you is too difficult or just not interesting to you. You know that if you don't get yourself motivated to complete the assignment you will suffer the consequences. What can you do? 1. Make a connection between the assignment and what interests you. Somehow, make a connection to this assignment. Is there a part of this assignment that you can relate to your life and what interests you? For example, can you apply the problem-solving methods needed to complete the assignment to a problem you are currently dealing with? Can you feel good about completing a writing assignment because you know that effective writing skills are needed in any career that you are considering? If you can connect the skills needed to complete this assignment to skills you need after graduation, you will increase your motivation to get up and get busy! 2. Use your fear. As my 15-year-old granddaughters told me when I asked why they are motivated to do so well in school, they replied that they fear failure. "I know if I don't do homework, I won't get good grades. A Way to Replace Standardized TestingStandardized tests are very common throughout the United States. They are used to measure students' academic performances in school. These tests vary from state to state in all grade levels. According to the article "What Schools Could Use Instead Of Standardized Tests" by Anya Kamenetz/NPR said that the Republican Senate are drafting a bill to eliminate the standardized test based on the requirements what they had before. However, the law was overdue and was postponed to the beginning of the year. The argument comes when the concern of the number of tests that student's take and the time they spend on taking it. Two of the most important places the Council of Chief State and Democratic groups have spoken in favor of reducing the number of standardized test. Overall, there are four possible ways that the nation would do to monitor learning if states didn't have to test every child every year. First of all, in the "sampling" (NPR 6) Keep standardized tests, but just |

A Career in Engineering"What do you want to be when you grow up? " A question most individuals hear as a child. Of course the typical answer for a young male athlete would be to go to the NFL or NBA. Athletes have to realize, that might not always be the case. So they have to have a backup plan, and choosing a backup plan might be hard. So they have to find out what they are interested in, and go from there. Knowing that they would want to do something that they enjoyed, and not have a boring career. Engineering is one of the best options because it involves individuals working with their creativity, active movement, and achieving a high paying salary. Engineering provides different ways for a person to explore their interest. For example: Engineers get to come up with crazy ideas and actually make those ideas come to life, building their own ideas with their own hands and other equipment provided. My First Sparring MatchHe looked like a 1920's boxer. The scars of rancor and remorse portrayed a modern-day warrior with pendulous eyelids of old age like the benign look of a father. The bell rings; it's time to start. Hands up, elbows in, eyes locked just like coach taught me, yet I feel unprepared for my first sparring match. My eyes are fierce, alert towards the tall challenger, as I began dancing around with my shadow. My opponents huge but his brain is small. At first he seems unapproachable as my jabs are blockaded and sometimes matched but he didn't even have to try to mask his agitation, for the few sharp jabs that pierced his guard literally just make him blink. I'm losing confidence as I sit down on my punches and watch as they do nothing but spur and whip his tired mind into action like a wake-up call. He raised a silencing hand in front of my face to catch and parry my jabs as I began noticing this single punch I practiced a thousand times was finally taking a toll on his nose. The angry |

Negative Effects of the Gilded AgeThe Gilded Age was a time when there was a rapid economic growth that generated vast wealth. New products and technologies improved middle-class quality of life. Industrial workers and farmers did not share in this new prosperity however, and worked long hours in dangerous condition for low pay. The Gilded Age politicians were largely corrupt and ineffective. Most Americans during the Gilded Age wanted political and social reform, but they strongly disagreed on what kind of reform. The Gilded Age was a time of good and bad times. However, the negative effects of the Gilded Age is tremendous. It seemed wonderful that farmers were leaving their farms and going into the city to become a part of the workforce. However, for some of the farmers the down side was that, machine power was expensive. Many farmers went into debt trying to purchase the costly farming machinery and the land. Farmers problems were compounded by the railroad's high cost of shipping compared to the low purchasing ra |

Tragedy of the Day CrossersAccording to the US Census Bureau, there are 10.4 million illegal immigrants in the United States today, 58% of whom are from Mexico (Randall 6). The border between the United States and Mexico stretches 1900 miles, from California to Texas, and it's one of the most frequently crossed international borders in the world. Although the United States patrols a large portion of the border, around 800,000 illegal Mexican immigrants manage to find ways to cross it every year, using methods like bypassing unpatrolled areas, tunneling under the border, forging fake documents, or simply overstaying with a valid US visa (Randall 8). Meanwhile, the action taken by the United States government toward the undocumented immigrants is equally horrific and tragic. In an effort to stop illegal immigration, US border agents have been using excessive force and violence toward the crossers, leading to deaths and injuries. The basic human rights of the migrants are violated while in detention, causing both p |

Descriptive Essay - My Grandfather's HouseGrowing up, I have visited a few places that I love going to time and time again, but there is that one place that I absolutely enjoy visiting. My grandfather's house in Grantsville, Utah. There are so many things that make this place amazing. After I am done describing these to you, I hope you will want to visit as much as I do. Pulling into Grantsville there is City Hall with a giant, bronze statue of an early settler that stands so tall that he can see over the whole city. The old Victorian houses and crumbling concrete businesses that have served the town for many years are on each side of the road. The sound of automotive tools revving and ratcheting fills ears as you drive pass them. Going a little further down the four lane road, you have the gargantuan mountain range that casts a shadow covering the town during the red-orange sunset every evening. As get closer, you pass an elementary school with the sounds of laughter and enjoyment of young children playing and running around. |

The High Expense of American HealthcareFor many years, politicians and insurance companies claimed that the Health Care System of the USA is the best in the world, however, many Americans find it harder to accept this statement because of the raising prices and other factors that make Health Care System more expensive for Americans. This essay will explore these issues. We will begin in the first section by discussing the special qualities of health care, why this is so expensive. The Healthcare sector is one of the most complex economic sectors in the United States. Even though in the United States the market plays a much bigger role in the delivery of healthcare than in any other economically developed country, it would be a mistake to think of the American healthcare system as a free market system. The main organizational forms in the United States include private doctor's offices organized as individual or group practices; nonprofit |

Beowulf - Anglo-Saxon Value RepresentationsAnglo-Saxon beliefs and values are represented and are shown greatly throughout the story of Beowulf, The characters that show this the most however are, Beowulf, Hrothgar, and Wiglaf who best represent these values in which they teach to the audience. The best who can represent the belief of fate is Beowulf, Beowulf's successes in many battles against monsters were sought from treasures and fame. Fate is one of the most important values to the Anglo-Saxons as is said: "every man's life must lie under the mastery of God's decree, as it still lies today" (lines 2858-2859) , Beowulf clearly represents this value in two of his quarrels, one with a very strong and vicious demon named Grendel. Fate is represented in the battle with Grendel because beowulf knows how strong Grendel is and has heard and almost witnessed the damage he has done but yet will still go into battle accepting the fate of not making it out alive, Beowulf is sure that this creature demon will not simply lay |

Rewriting the Texas ConstitutionConstitutions help establish boundaries of government and keep the nations and states they are written for together. The Texas Constitution is a long and complex document and is actually the sixth constitution of the state of Texas. It was written post-Civil War with provisions to reflect the changing climate of the nation having to do with politics and especially slavery. However, the Texas Constitution is now outdated and piece of history, needing to be rewritten for twenty- first century ideals. The function of a Constitution is generally providing for and limiting the powers of the government, establishing a legal system, and outlining the rights of citizens in a nation or state (Gomez). The United States Constitution provides the modern model for the proper function of constitutions. It was ratified in 1788. These principles are reflected in the Texas Constitution as well. For instance, limited government is well enumerated in the Texas Constitution, but it is not as enumerated i |

Love of the Game - SoccerSoccer is the world's most popular sport with approximately 3.5 billion fans. It just so happens that I love it just as much as everyone else does. It's a relatively cheap sport to play because all you really need is a ball and you can make a goal out of anything. I started playing soccer when I was about three years old. My parents signed me up to play for a local recreational (rec) league to see if I would enjoy it. At such a young age, the coaches let everyone play all positions just to get a feel for the game and to see what we liked best. As I grew older, I began to notice that my coaches kept me in the game a little bit longer rather than subbing me out like some of my teammates. I quickly realized that I was a good player and how much love I had for the sport. By the time I turned eleven I was eligible to try out for the local travel soccer team. There were about forty kids trying out for the team, but only fourteen would make it. During tryouts we would be separated in groups |
