Being Deaf or Hard of Hearing

Abstract Being able to hear and turn sounds into meaning is an assumption of life for most of us. Hearing, like vision, is a distance sense that provides us with information from outside our bodies. When hearing is limited, it affects the individual in significant ways, limiting communication, access to orally presented information and independent living. Advances in technology, including cochlear implants, have changed the lives of people with hearing problems. There are different strategies in the classroom that can help a student perform well along with many assessments to help classified the student accurately to give them the appropriate education needed. Introduction Being able to hear and turn sounds into meaning is an assumption of life for most of us. We are able to hear our family's voices, be able to hear the crackling of thunder, and the sound of the wind rushing through the trees (Smith, 2007). Through these exchanges we are able to share ideas, expand our knowledge and e

The New Telangana: Can it become a Trend-setter?

The New Telangana: Can it become a Trend-setter?* Indian Union has at last responded to the Trend-setting movement of new state formation quite positively and thereby created a new state, a regional one indeed! Thanks to the supreme sacrifice of its students and youth, the new Telangana became a dream true. Thus, a trend-setting event has happened in the recent past. With the success of such a democratic movement, many more new state movements might emulate the Telangana path. The 29th state of India that came to be described as Telangana was part and parcel of Andhra Pradesh, a parent Telugu-speaking state in the country. On the eve of its formal inauguration on June 2, 2014, the new state celebrates its birth in a big way, unparalleled in the history of Telugu people in the country. Obviously, all its martyrs killed in 1969 and after are always reminisced in the new state of Telangana! Kalvakuntla Chandra Sekhar Rao, popularly known as KCR, has emerged as the tallest leader on

Mathematics and Rigorous Proof

Mathematicians have the concept of rigorous proof, which leads to knowing something with complete certainty. Consider the extent to which complete certainty might be achievable in mathematics and at least one other area of knowledge. Claiming that mathematics' rigorous proof results only in complete certainty and allows shared knowledge to be absolute is an exaggerated assertion. The title insinuates that through mathematics, something can be known with complete certainty. Complete certainty may be exaggerated, therefore the question to be explored is: to what extent can rigorous proof be used to find complete certainty? However, rigorous proof can also be explored in other ways of knowing. In history, "the study of the past," historians do not use mathematical equations and explanations, but rather their own method to rigorously prove facts of the past, such as using evidence and various perspectives (Lagemaat 189). Therefore, this essay explores the extent to which rigorous

The Dark Side of America

The discovery of America has countless stories behind the event that has shaped America into what it is today. Many American's are proud of the land they grew up on and to be descended from the long line of ancestors that participated in the upbringing of the new world. Majority of American's deny any form of wrongdoing and stand proud when it comes to how America was born. However, many American's are ignorant of the correct history behind shaping America. Many were taught the wrong information and facts of who first discovered America, how the new settlers treated the Indians, and how the white men treated the environment when they began arriving on American soil. Many people believe that Christopher Columbus discovered the new world in 1492. This is one of the most commonly inaccurate facts taught throughout the entire history of the United States. However, when he began to overthrow the already settled land, numerous of Native Americans were murdered, mistreated, and forced into s

Domestic Violence in America

Domestic violence is regarded as a widespread problem in American society. Although often assumed to cover only violence between spouses or intimate partners, in many states laws prohibiting domestic violence include other relationships, such as adult siblings who live together or adults who care for their elderly parents. Since many cases go unreported, it is difficult to obtain precise figures regarding the scope and extent of the problem. Although there is no universally agreed definition of domestic violence, it is generally accepted as the use of coercive control within an intimate or family relationship. In March 2013, the Home Office extended its definition of domestic violence to include coercive control and violence or abuse experienced by people aged 16 years and over. The revised definition covers: any incident or pattern of incidents of controlling, coercive, threatening behavior, violence or abuse between those aged 16 or over who are, or have been, intimate partners or f

Attitudes and Perceptions

In today's culture, life is nothing but judgment upon a individuals actions. My life has been nothing but accusations made about me, people judging my values and character. This has been a daily problem I face. This often affects self-esteem, becoming so obsessed with how others perceive me that often I lose sight of myself. I've noticed many individuals often judge me off my attitude, physical abilities, and what others say of me. The main problem I face is people assuming I'm stuck up, or unapproachable. All throughout high school I wondered, "Why don't people like me", "what did I do?" I always thought there was something individuals had against me. Come to find out my senior year, many felt as if I was mean and stuck up. Upon asking why, the answer was just how I carried myself. I never wanted to be perceived as mean or unapproachable, I'm actually quite opposite. I'm one of the more friendly people a person could meet. However, I did carry myself in a manner t

Writing an Effective Research Paper

Introduction Research papers are the most difficult papers to write because the quality of the work has to be very detailed and you have to give more facts than opinions. Research involves using the library's online catalog, databases, government documents collections and more. Research is not necessarily copying passages and putting them together with other information you can find. Good research involves following the steps you need to take in order to make sure you have the correct information that your audience can understand. Choosing, Narrowing and Researching a Topic When choosing a topic to research you have to make sure you have the right tools to help you get reliable information in order to have a successful paper. You have to make sure you have an idea of what you want to research, choosing a topic can be the most difficult part of the whole process. Narrow down your options to one that will have your best interest and will be worth your time to research, since you are

Effective Learning Methods

As everybody knows, each student has her/his own specific way of efficient learning and it is necessary to find out that method for a better learning and a successful college life. Personally, my method of studying is a little bit different compared to others. Most often I prefer to study alone and during studying alone not because of being alone helps me learn more, the main reason is that much of the students are not good in group studying also I have to say that Pictures and diagrams help a lot. Another important way to learn effectively is class lectures while listening to class lectures I can learn much better and it helps me more than solo studying and specifically one time reviewing my notes is enough during the exam times if I attend class lectures attentively. In the case of

Poverty in America

This article describes the finding of a study that looked at the affects of poverty on early childhood development and how that projects into the health behavior and success as an adult. This study was done to verify the association of poverty in early development and the rate of success as an adult. The article describes how low income parents tend to spend less money on early development of their kids. To where kids raised in these households have a less cognitive rich groundwork. For example these kids tend not to be enrolled in preschools, less exposure to books and education toys. The study uses a combination of research method from Longitudinal to Interviews. Researches looked at poverty levels of infants from the age of 0-5years and then checked up on those kids throughout adult hood until the age of 37. The study found that these kids on average completed two fewer years of schooling earned half as much to in their life time compared to their middle and upper class peers, recei

Exemplification: Medical Marijuana

It is estimated that 1,658,370 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in the United States and 589,430 people will die from the disease. In fact, it is among the leading causes of death worldwide, with 14 million new cases diagnosed in 2012 alone, that number expected to rise to 22 million within the next two decades. The number of cancer related deaths is 171.2 per 100,000 men and women per year. Even with extensive treatment and today's advanced technology, many people fall victim and lose their lives to this very serious illness. Current treatments involve chemotherapy and radiation, which can do just as much harm to healthy cells and tissues as it does to cancerous cells. Side effects to this traditional treatment are also quite extensive and very harmful, not to mention very costly as well. Some people even choose to let their bodies alone fight the cancer because the thought of enduring this kind of treatment is just too much and very scary. Fortunately, there is another option available to help

Annotation - Letter from Birmingham Jail

"This response to a published statement by eight fellow clergymen from Alabama (Bishop C. C. J. Carpenter, Bishop Joseph A. Durick, Rabbi Hilton L. Grafman, Bishop Paul Hardin, Bishop Holan B. Harmon, the Reverend George M. Murray, the Reverend Edward V. Ramage and the Reverend Earl Stallings) was composed under somewhat constricting circumstances. Begun on the margins of the newspaper in which the statement appeared while I was in jail, the letter was continued on scraps of writing paper supplied by a friendly Negro trusty, and concluded on a pad my attorneys were eventually permitted to leave me. Although the text remains in substance unaltered, I have indulged in the author's prerogative of polishing it for publication." Birmingham was the largest city in Alabama with a population of approximately 225,000. During the 1950s and 1960s, Birmingham was one of the most segregated cities in the South with strict city ordinances that made it unlawful for different races to mix and mingle i

Child by Sylvia Plath

"Depression is a prison where you are both the suffering prisoner and the cruel jailer." This quote by Dorothy Rowe reinforces how Plath's persona considers herself a prisoner of depression, but also a jailer to her children. Plath creates the persona of a consumed mother to argue nostalgically to a universal audience using implied metaphors, that mental instability can deprive an individual of life's greatest gifts, replacing them with a mental and emotional numbness. Plath conveys through the speaker, that mental instability can deprive an individual of the greatest moments in life. The title of this poem, "Child" represents a blissful ignorance, because children haven't yet been exposed to what the world is capable of. Children are completely oblivious to reality, because all they have ever known is curiosity and joy. However, in this poem, the speaker is always two steps behind this idea of pure happiness, and is worried that her ignorance may damage her chil

A Look at World Religions

Religion is intertwined within our culture, politics, economics, and social relationships in every single way. Weather you attend church weekly, or are not religious at all, you simply cannot escape religion. It is inevitably around us always. Religion ultimately controls a lot around us, no matter what we want to believe. There are things in schools we cant do because it may offend people and there are things in public we cannot do because of it, no matter what you are being controlled by someone's religion. Culturally, all religions have different effects on people, based on how much you practice your religion or how much you don't. Culture and religion shares a relationship that can have a huge influence attitude, hair, clothing, traditions and child rearing, why we pray, how we should be praying, when we should pray, how much should we pray, and what we should be wearing when we are praying. One of the biggest examples of this specific example has to do with the Islāmic faith. T

The Biology of Anxiety

Anxiety is the brain's way of telling the body that there is danger and that something painful is coming. It is a biological process that tells us when we can stay where we are, and when we either need to protect ourselves or move to a safer place. When the brain tells the body that it is in danger, the Sympathetic Nervous System starts up, making the person anxious. They increase their oxygen by breathing faster and shallower. It increases the heart rate and the blood rushes to the muscles of the arms and legs (WebMD, 2013). It is also what makes the body focus its attention on running and fighting. The Sympathetic Nervous System is what causes you to have clammy hands and feet, an upset stomach, or a sense of dread when you're anxious (WebMD, 2013). When studying worry, scientists found more activity in the left-hemisphere (WebMD, 2013). Worry is associated more with obsessing, going over and over something, or making up stories in your head. Anxiety disorders affect about 19 millio

History of the Crusades

The Crusades were pivotal events in world history. They were categorized as the end of the medieval time period. The crusades brought so many different changes to Europe in many different ways. One of the reasons behind the crusades would be when the government wanted to free the holy land from the Muslims; this all began in Europe. It's only sense to know that the medieval rulers and Christians would unite against a common opposition. The king and his people felt as though freeing the Christians from the Muslim rule and claim back the land stolen from them 500 years ago would be nothing less than a good deed. If you pay close attention to the history of the crusades in the beginning you agree that they didn't know the kind of affect it would have on the economy, politics, religion, and social life. The knights in the Crusades had a crippling high cost to pay, and that is not just to be a part of it. Traveling with the crusades had a high cost, even after selling their lands and pers

All the Years of Her Life

"All The Years of Her life" is a short story in which Morley Callaghan describes that Alfred's view has changed very much. Alfred is afraid of growing up and becoming an adult at the beginning story. However, he begins to understand something about his mother after his mother helps him when he is caught stealing. In this story, Callaghan presents an idea of change demonstrated by Alfred's epiphany due to his mother's influence, such as being more mature, growing ashamed of himself, and being aware of people's age. There is segregation between Alfred's behavior and his thinking when Mr.Carr tries to contact his mother to deal with the bad situation that happened to Alfred. Actually Alfred tries to be mature, and he wants to act like an adult, but his "childish hope was in him, the longing that someone at home would come and help h

The Cardiovascular System

Introduction The cardiovascular system has a very simple job and all it is transportation. The cardiovascular system delivers waste to be removed and delivers nutrients to be used by body organs and tissues. The cardiovascular system delivers oxygen from the lungs and takes carbon dioxide back to the lungs to be exhaled. As simple as it the cardiovascular system sounds it must adjust its output according to the state of the person. (Wilmore, Costill, and Kenney, 2008). If a person is being active then the cardiovascular system must speed up to meet the demands of the working tissues. The heart must beat faster to get the needed blood to each tissue. During exercise blood flow is focused on the tissues that are working. The digestive system organs do not get as much attention from the cardiovascular system because the blood is needed more at muscles. The heart receives electrical impulses through the SA node to contract and create a higher pressure then what is in the arteries. Blood wi

Computers and Technology in the Classroom

Computers and similar technologies are now in almost every school across the United States. Restructuring efforts have included the addition of technology in education and has begun to make technology skills a separate standard for students to accomplish. As technology becomes more widespread and readily available, tax payers are asking researchers in education to provide data that allows for thoughtful decision making on the use of technology for learning. How Technology has Evolved Over Time The first time a computer was implemented in education was in 1970. The first use of it was for students to learn a program. Ever since then, use of computers in a classroom has rapidly evolved. As computer technologies and software developers became more knowledgeable about computers, software began to become more sophisticated which led to teachers using computers more and more as a resource in the classroom. Students would follow commands on the computer screen and would receive rewards fo

Perceptions of Death in Everyman

The play "The Summoning of Everyman" is a morality play. In the entire play, the characters personify moral abstracts and qualities. The author focuses on the most crucial attributes of life such as friendship, love, life, death and fidelity to a supreme being. The characters play a significant role in the play's plot. However, the role that Death and Everyone play is more significant to create the overall theme of morality. The paper examines the thesis that even though the author perceives Death as God's messenger, the rescuer of humankind and a fair judge, the primary focus is to cultivate Christian ideals in the living of humanity and prepare them for afterlife. The play is not majorly about death, but to admonish humankind to uphold a moral living in preparation for the eternal life. The play's author is anonymous. Everyman is the central character in the play, and he symbolizes humankind. He spends his life seeking and living in world pleasure in utter disregard of

The Evolution of Philosophy

Introduction Throughout history, philosophy has been something that has changed tremendously. The reason for this is due to the fact that new philosophers come into the field of philosophy and have different opinions on various aspects of life. Philosophers in around the 7th Century B.C. asked questions of such fundamental quality such as "what is our universe made of? What is fire, what is water?" Additionally, ethics has been a topic of copious debate between not just many philosophers including Aristotle, Plato and Socrates, but also in our current day in politics and law. Expanding on contemporary philosophy, philosophers today talk about very important social issues such as women's rights and environmental issues. They also use a much more reasonable and educated approach than philosophers have done in the past. This is because the theorists do not take note on their religious views and they focus on current ways of life such as atheism and communism. Now, modern philoso

Movie Summary - Office Space

Mike Judge's film, Office Space, gives the viewer insight into the everyday struggles of the working class, through our observations of the relationships between the employer and employees, as well as through the coping mechanisms and resistance strategies utilized by employees. Relationships between the employer and employees show the hierarchies present in the workplace, rendering employees with little power. Employees thus use coping strategies to come to terms with their powerlessness, or acts of resistance to attempt to undermine the hierarchy of employment rendered necessary within a capitalist society. John Kane's "Work Sucks: A Radical Analysis of Office Space" works to illuminate the issues present within the film, using theory to argue for a radical analysis of the workplace issues presented in the film. Office Space has a cast of characters who share resentment or hatred of their workplace, Initech. The characters vary in the ways that they choose t

Application of Economics to Everyday Life

People experience economics in their day to day activities without noticing. I personally have experienced it when it comes to budgeting or choosing between certain things to buy. One of the hardest choices I've had to make was when choosing what university to go to. The best University in California, UCLA, has very high standards, very high levels of education and ranked highly so graduating from there would definitely put you at a better chance of employment as opposed to graduating from a community college, but is very expensive when it comes to tuition fees. Since I am an international student the tuition fees are more expensive and come up to about $30,000 per semester which is quite expensive in my opinion or rather for my budget. In comparison to that is a CSU which is not ranked as high and is half the price of Uc's so I had to choose between going to one of the best universities but at a huge expense, with all the benefits, or

A Midsummer Night's Dream and As You Like It

Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream and As You Like it both describe many serious elements and embark upon an exploration and treatment of some of the most seriousness of life's experiences and themes. However, both of these plays are excellent examples of Shakespearean comedies, and, as such, they both possess a number of similarities in terms of the normal aspects of comedies that are associated with Shakespeare. For example, both contain lovers whose union is thwarted or prevented in some way, both contain a forest where the lovers go to try and escape the problems they face, there is gender confusion and disguised identity and by the end, the various problems are solved and the lovers are free to marry. Both of these plays in particular are interesting in their use of setting, as the Forest of Arden and the forest that the Athenian lovers flee too becomes a kind of symbol for the opposite of town life with its rules and regulations. The forest is conceived of as a place of p

Mesoamerican Transition: From Nomads to Settlers

Beginning with the most ancient of civilizations, most humans had a nomadic way of living in which moving from place to place was key. The people of Mesoamerica led nomadic hunter and gatherer life styles and were originally traveling groups that exploited the natural environment of a particular area (Pool, 2007). Nomadic hunting and gathering, which is the following of seasonal wild plants and game, is one of the oldest human survival methods (Coe & Houston, The Maya, 2015). The Mesoamerican tribes or communities would use up all the resources in that area during that season, then move to another area when the next season arrived. While this may have worked for communities during a greater period of history, the need for a more permanent style of living was evident. This was especially clear as the small nomadic groups grew in size. It became increasingly difficult to provide for the growing population through this lifestyle (Pope, 2001). In order to transition away from a nomadic lif
