Nationalty Depictions in Heart of DarknessIn Heart of Darkness, there is a definite difference in the ways Africans are depicted and the way the Europeans are depicted. The use of slang to describe the African natives, Kurtz's haunting last words, and how their lifestyle is described as being "savage" shows the definite difference. The Europeans, Marlow, Kurtz, and the gang, believe they have the right to the land of Africa and its Elephant's ivory. The ivory is the reason they are making this pilgrimage to Africa. But on their way to foreign land they talk about some of their mates past experiences with the Natives. One of those experiences being about how a fellow named Fresleven though himself to be wronged by a trade that took place in Africa and hoe he "whacked the old nigger mercilessly" |

Slavery and the Middle PassageMany people had different views towards the Middle Passage. The different groups were the Africans, merchants, and the European society in general. The Middle Passage referred to the second leg of the triangular trade, in which Africans were sent to the Americas to work as slaves. This is all because the Native Americans began to die out due to European disease. They know looked for labor from Africa. They were all treated horribly. The sailors on the trade routes treated the slaves like trash, feeding them just enough in order for them to survive. 11-414 million Africans were shipped between the years of 1524 and the 1800's. The European society had many different views on slave trade. "Attitudes displayed toward slaves aboard ship and the conditions which they existed also grew out of a general attitude towards the poor and dispossessed that was prevalent in England, and throughout Europe at the close of the 17th century" (Document A). This shows how Europeans knew how unfairly and uncivilized these innocent people were being trad |

Short Story - The Season of ChristmasAs the seasons change, it is nearly impossible to not be a witness to the spectacular transition of your surroundings. As flowers begin to bloom on trees then soon become an oasis of shade on a hot summer's day while you are at a barbecue. Then, it is Labor Day and you are watching fireworks burst into beautiful, mesmerizing shapes, then slowly fade and fall back down to earth like crimson leaves shedding from branches. Soon enough, those once crisp leaves become brittle and brown, crunching loudly beneath your feet. The, magically one day they are covered with a thick blanket of snow. From the first snow, to Christmas, and the overall natural beautification, winter is a lovely and simply elegant season. The excitement that surges through your body on the first day of snow is incomparable to most feelings. It is typically unexpected, possibly the most coveted day of the year. It is quickly followed by children's cheers rejoicing over school cancellations. Quickly, you run out the f |

Music from the Baroque PeriodThe Baroque era was a period of energy and motion. New contrasts between light and dark appeared on paintings. Painting and sculpting gained a new sense of motion like music did at that time. They both pushed themselves forward. The picture on page 81 in the textbook A Musical Interlude, by the Dutch Painter Jan Verkolje shows an example of this movement to depict a single affect or emotion. The guy in the picture has turned, in a moment of passion and grasped the hand of his musical partner, a woman playing a violin. Another good example of this is Museo Civico, Turn, and Italy. It is a picture of the Bridgeman Art Library while a show is being put on. The musical instruments in the picture are the horn, basso, and if you consider the chorus as part of the singing. This picture was painted in 1740, depicting an oper |

The Origin of Civil Society by RousseauIn "The Origin of Civil Society" (Rousseau 237), Jean-Jacques Rousseau makes a bold assertion that states, "Man is born free, and everywhere he is in chains." He addresses freedom as the most important topic in his work and aims to explain how man in the state of nature has a choice in his total freedom. Rousseau helps us explore his idea of freedom while reading his work and reveals insight about what political conditions are needed for humans to realize what genuine freedom is. Rousseau identifies two types of freedom, natural liberty and civil liberty. According to Rousseau, natural liberty is primitive. It allows for man in the state in nature to be blessed with an enviable total freedom. One of his reasons for the freedom of natural man is that he is not constrained by a body politic or by a repressive government. He also believed in a freedom based off a man's obligations or needs. Rousseau thought the modern man was imprisoned by his own needs due to the current societies' morals and views. According to Rousseau, civil liberty is attained by giving up our natural freedom. Mosinee High and Pioneer StadiumDuring the fall of high school, juniors and seniors aren't overly enthused about the upcoming choices for college, or any sort of schooling for that matter. Many students put forth the minimum grade requirement to participate in the extracurricular activities. The most common of these activities on Friday nights is football. With the giant lights beaming down on the cold, damp, muddy field, the creaky high school bleachers are filled with individuals cheering on their fellow classmates, hoping for a win. Unfortunately, most students, such as those in Mosinee High in central Wisconsin are probably oblivious to UW Platteville's existence in the south west corner of the state. Many other colleges are sought out for their outs |

Devastation of Agriculture and Food Supply in IndiaDevastation of Agriculture and Food Supply in India Climate change has been one of the most crucial environmental issues that many countries as well as humanity is facing. More essentially, the impact of climate change upon agriculture and the food supply are the most devastating effect for South Asia, including Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and more specifically India. Indeed, these countries are some of the most vulnerable nations due to the increasing temperature and rainfall in recent decades. However, India has been experiencing a more direct impact and major challenges as compared to other countries; chaotic weather conditions destroy the country's food supply and slow its economic growth (VIKAS BAJAJ, 2013). Since India has a huge population, it has been one of the most affected countries by the climate change. The agriculture and food crops have become impressible in the country because there have been abnormal weather conditions have started to occur due to this problem. Mo |

Dumplings and Wontons: Siblings or Cousins? The Omnipresent Dumplings Before I came to the United states, I noticed that people in lots of American TV shows like to order Chinese takeout. But it was not until I came to the United States that I realized how popular Chinese food is in America. Except for Chinatown and Flushing where Chinese people and restaurants assemble, you definitely can find a Chinese restaurant within ten blocks. I once went to Han Dynasty, a Chinese restaurant, at nine in the evening and half of the people in the restaurant were Americans. It surprised me because to my limited knowledge on American people, they usually go to bars at this time. But what surprised me more was that almost every table ordered a plate of dumplings. Since then, I started to keep an eye on the omnipresent dumplings. Not before long that I came to the conclusion: Americans love dumplings. Indeed, dumplings are so popular that they are even on the snack menu of a bar called Tropical 128. (Sipher) When I asked Americans on my floor w |

Marijuana and Cancer: A World of ControversyIf you spend any amount of time on Twitter, Facebook, or just researching cancer treatments on the internet, you will find something about marijuana and cancer. Marijuana is a forbidden controlled substance in most states. The American Lung Association (ALA), the American Cancer Society (ACS), and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) have different views on marijuana use for the treatment of cancer. In discussions of marijuana use, one controversial issue has been whether it is harmful or helpful in cancer treatments. On the one hand, the American Lung Association argues that smoking marijuana causes cancer. On the other hand, the American Cancer Society contends smoking marijuana cures cancer. The National Cancer Institute maintains that there is not enough evidence to prove that marijuana use is harmful or helpful in the treatment of cancer. The American Lung Association is concerned about the health impacts of marijuana use in the treatment of cancer. "Marijuana is most commo |

Human Resources and the Boarding ProcessIt is key for employees to understand what their job entails, as well as, the expectations that will be placed upon them while performing their duties. Management has a responsibility to the company and the employees to ensure as little miss-communication as possible. It is extremely important to lay the groundwork for incoming workers as to what they need to be prepared for. New environments can be tricky and at times disorienting. However, with a well-trained and coordinated management team, the transition phase can be shortened. Current employees cannot be forgotten in this process, regular updates on job expectations can improve communication, morale and production. Acknowledging that information flows in both directions can help facilitate the overall process of job description education. An informative "Welcome Aboard" routine must be established to ease workers into their new environment. Once an employee is hired, they must be notified of the new workers program, and |

Text and Imagery in WatchmenAlan Moore and Dave Gibbons, the authors/artists behind Watchmen did an outstanding job with linking the correct imagery with the appropriate textual content. The success of their Graphic Novel can be understood through Scott McCloud's book Understanding Comics. Understanding Comics gives readers the insight and knowledge of what it takes and how to properly execute a successful graphic novel. McCloud, through his text demonstrates that that comics are not just a sequence of images slapped together with text, but instead an art form. This art form can often be looked at as much more difficult than a regular novel. In the graphic novel Watchmen, a lot of the story is depicted and developed through the use of images. The non-textual content in the book progresses the story and gives the reader insight through the use of images. The use of images to tell the story and further develop the plot in Watchmen can be seen by focusing on a particular part of the text in chapter 2. On pages 14 a |

Putitng Limits on Free SpeechUnder the rights for United States citizens stated in the First Amendment of the Constitution, Americans are guaranteed the right to free speech. To some, the amendment is interpreted to mean citizens should be able to say whatever they want whenever they want, regardless of the repercussions. This right to free speech is what protects Americans from being suppressed by the government, while also allowing the people as a whole to have a voice, a voice allowing the people to maintain their own opinions and also influence political and social actions in the United States. When one considers limiting free speech, it is assumed limitations would infringe on American's basic rights and prevent citizens from maintaining their own voices. However, in certain situations, limitations of free speech are necessary for basic protection. Based on the necessary protection of United States citizens, both in security and dignity, limits to free speech are justified in public area if the speech pos |

Migration in KosovoMigration occurs for different reasons. Some people have difficulty living in their country and they migrate because of push factors. Push factors are those things that encourage a population to leave their home. Push factors include high unemployment rate, bad health care, wars, bad governing, poverty and low incomes and other things. People also migrate because of pull factors. Pull factors are factors that pull people to a country who applies the pull factor. This also makes people migrate to find better jobs in a place with good economy. Over one hundred thousand people have left Kosovo since August 2014, heading to different destinations. The centre is Hungary and from there they go to apply for asylum mostly in Germany, Austria and France. Kosovo has one of the largest international migrations out flows in the world. All this is happening because the unemployment rate is sky high. Fifty percent of people in Kosovo live on one euro per day. This means they see no future here. |

Uncovering the UnconsciousOur minds are unknowingly divided into two parts: the conscious and the unconscious; and with the unconscious mind we have a few benefits and a few drawbacks. The first benefit of the unconscious is the way it's hardwired. Our unconscious is what allows us to use our intellectual skills, helps us solve problems, it keeps our memories safe, it's what manages our thoughts in an orderly fashion, and what protects us. The unconscious, for example, is very similar to an iceberg. What we see above the water is the conscious, and what we can't see underneath is the foundation that holds the whole thing together (the unconscious). David Smith gives many examples of the benefits of the unconscious mind in chapter 4 of Why We Lie. Starting with problem solving, he expresses that our minds can sometimes have issues with trying to find the answer to something and that if we just leave it alone for a little while and give our conscious mind a break, our unconscious will take hold of the problem |

An Unfair Reality in Devil in a Blue DressSexism and racism are two problems that American society has been facing from the beginning of its history. Even though society is more open minded now, people keep judging and making stereotypes about others just because of their sex or race. In writing the book Devil in a Blue Dress, Walter Mosley touches on these significant issues that American society was struggling with in 1948. Through the characters Easy and Daphne, Mosley vividly portrays the struggle with racial and sexual issues that keep showing the constant presence of these problems despite of the fact that this story took place 67 years ago. The forces that pushed Easy to accept DeWitt's, one of the guys looking for Daphne, offer, reveals how Easy's racial problems influenced him to accept "the dirty job" that others do not want to do. On the other hand, Daphne is merely seen as a sexual object and because of that, most of the men in the story would do anything to gain her charms. Thus, she is solely admired fo |

Promoting Gender EqualityGender inequality refers to unequal treatment of individuals based on their gender and this remains to be a major barrier to human development. For girls in many regions, education still remains unattainable. The world can progress immensely if we promote gender equality as several women have the capability to excel in so many aspects in life. However, they do not have the opportunity to receive education or work, violating their human right. There would be economic growth in nations and this would greatly stimulate development around the globe. Global Perspective Women living in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia are afraid to speak about the abuse they go through at home in fear of their husbands/fathers/male guardians as they are brutally abused. It is also illegal to be present in public areas without the presence of a related man, making it impossible for women to grow as independent leaders. Breakfast of Champions by Kurt VonnegutKurt Vonnegut's 1973 novel Breakfast of Champions satirizes many aspects of American ideology. This satire emerges when one identifies the patterns of thought (assumptions) that distinguish individuals as active participates in the convoluted conflicts of American culture. Moreover, these crises are indicative of what Vonnegut sees as the flaws in American life. Based on these basic elements of national assumptions, it seems that Breakfast of Champions is satirizing the American culture in regards to race, class, gender, jingoism, history, and environmentalism. These targets can be made clear when one considers the implications of how damaging they are to the nation's people. Vonnegut's satire seems centralized and is not a coincidence; it is his impoliteness, anger, and criticism which ultimately imply to the American culture that its citizens need to recognize their flaws, chaos, and bad thinking in order to make a turn in society for the better. Hernando Cortes and the New WorldHernando Cortes ventured to Cozumel and Yucatan in the early 1500's to conquer the natives, rob them of their riches, convert them to Christianity, and ultimately to siege the Aztec city of Tenochtitlan. Cortes and his soldiers, called "conquistadores," were not paid for their attainment of the New World, they were "military entrepreneurs willing to risk their lives for a share in expected plunder and slaves" (Shi and Tindall, America p. 28). When Cortes first landed on Cozumel and Yucatan, his initial goal was to assess the natives of the region, their resources, and the layout of the land. Once Cortes gathered this information, he reported it to the Spanish Emperor, assisting in Spain's ultimate goal to conquer the powerful Aztec Empire. In his report to the Emperor, Cortes described many of the Aztecs brutal and barbaric sacrificial rituals of people, including women and children. Cortes did taint the truth, by reporting that Aztecs disemboweled, and tore out |

Debating Vietnam: To Bomb or Not to Bomb?To negotiate or to bomb? That was the controversy between Senators J. William Fulbright and John C. Stennis on how to get the United States to exit from Vietnam. Fulbright was the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee (SFRC), while Stennis was the chairman of the Preparedness Investigation Subcommittee of the Senate Armed Services Committee (SPIS). Each of these senators had their own way of wanting to settle the conflict in Vietnam. In fact, these two committees held public hearings of national debate in order to investigate U.S. policy in Vietnam. On January 27, 1966, U.S. Senator John C. Stennis of the SPIS, announced that the United States' involvement in Vietnam was no "police action," and also stated that what had been "called a 'dirty little war' has become a 'dirty big war.'" (1) Stennis's main concern was not only how to end the war, but how to win it as well. He believed the best way of doing this was to bomb the North Vietnamese |

Does Equality Exist is Thailand?King Chulalongkorn, one of the greatest king of Siam, was best-known for his royal contribution to Thai society that was Slave Abolition Act. It was the first time Thai people experienced equality and freedom. The king also attempted to encourage equality in Thailand with school uniforms. Students from different social classes wore the same kind of clothes and studied together in order to decrease diversity between them. In his reign, the country gained a large deal of Western ideas. Primary education was provided to women as a symbol of gender equality. Political administration was divided into ministries to denote balance and stability in politics. Thai people have been told, for a long time, to believe that equality actually exists in their democratic country. However, they are deceived by the society to misinterpret the true meaning of what equality is. In reality, equality has never existed in Thailand. Handling Pressure in MacbethIt is clear that people react different to stressful situations, some rise to meet the occasion and others crumble under the pressure of the moment. Shakespeare depicts this differentiation quite well through his characters – Macbeth and Lady Macbeth – in his play Macbeth. Some would say that Macbeth begins the play strong and finishes strong but loses parts of himself somewhere in the middle. One could also say that Lady Macbeth started out with all the power and control and she too lost herself but, unlike Macbeth, she never regained her senses and in the end took the weakest way out. Macbeth began the journey with a solid reputation but he is weak compared to his wife and quickly begins to waver. After defeating Macdonwald and the traitorous Thane of Cawdor in Act 1, scene 2 Ross says, ". . . Living in Denial in A Rose for EmilyThe short story "A Rose for Emily" by William Faulkner focuses on the alienated Miss Emily Grierson who lived in the South during the late 19th century. The lonely and impoverished woman is unable to cope with death and decay, until her own death occurs. Death seems to loom throughout the whole story, as Emily refuses to accept change and struggles to be in control of the people around her. By not accepting death of her loved ones and choosing to ignore it, Emily is unable to grip the idea of death and suffers from the consequences such as denial and isolation from her town. Miss Emily grew up secluded from the rest of society, and only communicated with her father, and "an old man-servant – a combined gardener and cook" (Faulkner 1). Her father was overprotective and would drive away any possible suitors whom came around. He believed that none of the men were good enough for his daughter. People in the town believed that the "Griersons held themselves |
