Medical Ethics - Sport Enhancements

Johnny Football, age 7, is in the bottom 1%-ile for height with a projected adult height of 5'1". His parents are concerned his stature will affect his opportunities and quality of life. Johnny loves football and wants to try out for his Little League team. Dr. I.M. Rich, a respected endocrinologist, has said that daily growth hormone injections will probably increase his height and strength, with little risk of serious side effects. His parents are eager to help him achieve his goals. The school system has a policy prohibiting "performance enhancing drugs" unless medically indicated. Johnny's pediatrician, Dr. Conrad Flicted, would appreciate an analysis of the ethical issues, with a recommendation supported by reasons. Worry about enhancement? Why not worry instead about a vacation? Enhancement, after all, is something we seek for ourselves and think others should too. As a society, we applaud individuals who exercise to extend their lives, be thinner, and if not more

The Benefits of Community

When I think of a community I think of a large family. They are there for you in the time of need to help and support you in your toughest times. Many people nowadays are unaware of how important it really is to be able to come together as a community and to have community celebrations to help get to know each other. Your community can have a very big impact on your life because they can help you or your children develop certain skills such as social skills and communication skills. As a child my family and I participated in many community celebrations which brought us closer to the rest of the community. The one that I felt brought us closer together year after year was the Whiteaker Block Party. I would consider the Whiteaker Block Party one of the biggest celebrations that we have in Eugene. Many people come from out of town to participate in many of the festivities that the block party has to offer such as all the games, music and all of the food. We used to live in a small apart

Masculinity in Advertising

The media is undoubtedly a powerful mechanism in shaping the minds of society and framing the "perfect" male physique. Throughout today's society, men and boys are being pressured to be muscular and built to fit in, and dramatically this is what is tearing up our society. This can be evident through visual techniques that will be analyzed in visual texts, influential film, TV and famous sporting icons. The stereotype of masculinity is effectively portrayed throughout the Calvin Klein (advertisement 1) male perfume advertisement which is targeted towards males. When the audience is introduced to the image, they are confronted with the epitome of masculinity conveyed through the perfectly structured male. The first thing that is noticed is the subjects muscular body due to the subject's position of high salience. This advertisement has employed salience to project an ideal image of a male which thus places pressure of male audiences to look like the male subject. Additionally, the com

The Price of Individuality

Individuality is being yourself without worrying about what anyone thinks. In the movie "Boy" (Directed by Taika Waititi in 2010), Boy must try to separate his identity from his father. Boy's father, Alamein, influences him to do the wrong things. While in "5 Ways to Disappoint Your Vietnamese Mother" (Written by Diana Nguyen in 2008) Diana Nguyen is fighting against her mother in becoming who she wants to be and not what her mother wants her to be. To truly achieve individuality, one must face the changing relationships with their parents, growing up and making difficult decisions, and avoid becoming a stereotype. A relationship that has been changed between parent and child is one of the outcomes of individuality. In the movie Boy, Boy and his father share a strong fantasy relationship. Boy thinks he is just like him, but as he matures, he finally realizes that his father wasn't there when his mom died. In the scene where Boy slaps him, he says, "I don't remember you! You weren

Causes of the Franco-Prussian War

A large contributor to the Franco-Prussian war on the individual level was the the deceitful diplomacy implemented by Otto Von Bismarck concerning the succession of the Austrian throne. The balance of power in Europe had been disturbed by Prussia's victory over Austria in the Seven Weeks War of 1866. This, along with the insulting Ems Dispatch, provided incentive for a French attack on Prussia. German Unification was the ultimate goal of Prussia, who inspired nationalism to achieve said goal. However, nationalism was prevalent in France as well. The Congress of Vienna, finalized in 1815, attempted to establish a balance of powers in Europe that would prevent future wars. Through a redistribution of territories, the treaty was rather successful in that regard until the Austro-Prussian War of 1866. Prussia defeated Austria in this "Seven Weeks War." As a result, the latter was no longer a part of the German Confederation and "left Prussia dominant in German politics"

Diabetes - Two Different Diseases

Diabetes is considered one of the most horrible diseases, besides cancer, in our society today. It can affect the body to the extent of the loss of limbs. It causes blindness, strokes, and all other kinds of problems throughout the body. Diabetes is a metabolic disease where the body either doesn't produce enough insulin or no insulin at all. There are two types of diabetes, but they affect the body in different ways. Type 1 diabetes is often diagnosed in children (juvenile diabetes). This form of diabetes is when the body does not produce insulin. Insulin is needed to convert sugar into energy. Since the body does not produce any insulin, it is essential to get an insulin pump. An insulin pump is sort of like a mechanical pancreas; it produces the insulin needed and pumps it into the body continuously throughout the day to ensure the affected person's blood sugar does not skyrocket nor plummet. Blood sugar, the amount of glucose in the blood, can e

Marie Curie - An Admirable Explorer

There are many different contributions made by various explorers throughout the world. One of these explorers is Marie Curie. She is recognized to be a well-known explorer until nowadays due to her scientific achievements in the past and her good personality. Marie Sklodowska Curie was born on November 7th, 1867 in Warsaw, Poland in a poor family with her four siblings. Brought up by her mother, a headmistress at a girl's school, and her father, a professor at math and physics, Marie inherited her parents' scientific ability and expressed this ability at an early age. As a young student, Marie was a very bright child and did well at school. After graduating high school, Marie worked very hard to spend money to help her sisters and to pursue her own dream as becoming a doctor. In 1891, Marie went to Paris to study at the Sorbone

The Case For and Against Torture

Remember the terrorist attack on September 11 2001, when al-Qaeda hijacked airplanes to fly into government buildings like the world trade center, or the attack at the Boston marathon when the bombs exploded at the end of the marathon. Who could forget such acts of terror, but should torture be legalized in order to stop attacks like these, the answer is no. First, what is torture? Torture defined by Merriam-Webster.com is "the act of causing severe physical pain as a form of punishment or as a way to force someone to do or say something" (torture). Torture has been around for centuries; furthermore, torture in the United States is illegal. An example of torture is waterboarding, where an individual puts a cloth over a victims face and pours water over the cloth, which simulates the act of drowning. Drowning is a horrible and slow way to die; therefore, to use this method of torture would ruin an individual's morals. The essay "The Case for Torture", by Michael Le

William Morris Hunt - American Artist

In nineteenth century, there appeared many great names in the art world of America such as George Catlin, George Healy, and Mary Cassatt. Among that, William Morris Hunt emerged as one of the most important American artists of the second half of the century, bringing a new influence and art to America. William Morris Hunt was born in a wealthy and honorable family from New England. His father, a graduate from Dartmouth College and a member of Congress, died of cholera during the epidemic in 1832, leaving his wife with five children to educate (McCullough 191). Coming from a family of prominence in Connecticut, Jane Leavitt had a strong passion for painting even though she did not receive any support from her father. Therefore, she determined that all her children should "have the best advantages possible" (Shannon 28). Near the town where the family lived, there was an Italian artist looking for orders and pupils. Willing to help anyone who had interest in drawing, Mrs. Hunt

Ancient Civilizations - China and the Indus

The ancient Indus and ancient Chinese civilizations each brought their own huge contributions to the human species, yet we only know so much about them. Despite being roughly 2000 miles apart from each other, the two civilizations had somewhat similar characteristics such as their specialization of labor, large trading markets, huge advances in the sciences and arts and their forms of monumental architecture. But still differed in many ways in the same characteristics. For instance, the Indus and the Chinese were very similar in their specializations in labor. As a result of cultivating plants and the domestication of animals, both civilizations allowed their people to spend time doing other things that weren't related to farming. Similarly, the civilizations had many military members, noblemen, merchants, blacksmiths, artistic members, architects and farmers. There were two differences, the Indus had many more priests because they worshipped multiple major gods, the Chinese didn't. Instead they didn't really have an or

Racism and Ethnicity

In today's day in age, you would think that racism, sexism, stereotyping, and any act of discrimination or prejudice would be put to an end. Unfortunately, people from around the world still undergo consequences because of their skin color or the religion they follow. The problem with this is that people do not understand that our skin color is only skin deep. What we look like and the religion or the faiths we follow do not define who we are. It is very obvious that the humans of this world do not understand the true meanings of what a race is or what an ethnicity is. It seems as though the term "race" is not fully understood. Race is a distinct population of people with genetically transmitted physical characteristics in which is what I understand to be true as well with this term. These physical characteristics include skin color and hair type. I say that the term race is not fully understood by people because no one should be shunned upon or rejected just because their

The Influence of GMO Patents

The Monsanto v. bowman case is a case that revolves around the patent benefits that companies like the Monsanto Company are able to use to restrict independent farmers like Vernon Bowman. In this particular case the Monsanto has a patent on a GMO strain of soybean seeds that they sold to the petitioner, Bowman. Bowman used the seeds to grow crops the first year and then proceeded to collect seeds from that crop in order to plant the next year's crop. (court case) He continued to do this for many year after which is against the rights of the patent holder Monsanto. (court case) In order for Bowman to have been able to use Monsanto's strain of soybean he had to have re-bought the seeds every year from the Monsanto Company. The Monsanto Company is a GMO company that makes this particular strain of soybean that is resistant to weed control product "roundup". This company also holds around 400 different GM seed patents so they are no stranger to the rights and regulations that co

Youth and Gender Identity Disorder

My focus for this essay is to explore the uncovered area of psychology. Gender Identity Disorder is not a common area of research, and this is honestly very disappointing. GID is a serious issue in today's world, and many children are diagnosed with it every day. Because it is such an obsolete topic, not many know what it is and how to treat patients with this diagnosis. Here are the questions that will be covered in this paper: 1. What short-term affects does GID have in youth? 2. What long-term affects does GID have in youth? 3. Does having GID have a role in sexuality/sexual orientation? 4. Can it be cured/is there treatment? Gender Identity Disorder has many effects on the youth that is diagnosed with it, with or without treatment, and many grow up and identify as homosexual either way. What short term affects does GID have in Youth? Short-term effects of gender identity disorder can include a lot of symptoms and odd functionalities. Children diagnosed with GID often showcase the

Historical Effects of the Printing Press

The major consequences of the invention of the printing press were on religion by indirectly taking away power from the church, education by having books more readily available, and technology by now containing the ability to massively produce books. The Catholic Church's main reason for loss of power is the printing press. All the lies they had told have come crashing down on them. In Doc. 3, Martin Luther's 95 Theses spread throughout Europe in many languages (along with the bible) so now the common man new that the church was lying to make money. His work being published contributed to the decline of the Catholic Church's influence in Germany and then the rest of Europe. In Doc 5, Elizabeth Einstein states that even though the church accepted the invention of the printing press, it caused their own

Spike Lee's Re-Appropriation of Jezebel

In film, as with any art form, old archetypes and stereotypes integrate themselves into society's conscious through reinforcement. The common threads, positive or negative, were perpetuated by creators who were content to stick with something the audience knew well enough to not be threatened by, and in return the audience was comfortable enough with the subject that they would greet the work with a generally warm reception. This exact thing happened with the Jezebel archetype, a racist, sexist, harmful portrayal of black women in early films as hyper-sexualized objects. Directors were comfortable in perpetuating the idea of the Jezebel, both overtly and subtly. In "She's Gotta Have It", Spike Lee attempts to re-appropriate the misogynistic jezebel stereotype by imbuing Nola's character with self-assurance and positive traits, but ultimately falls short in his execution through flaws in supporting detail. The Jezebel has been around since the Old Testament, represented by a

Rules of Justice in King Lear

King Lear is a brutal play filled with cruelty and seemingly meaningless disasters. All of these terrible events trigger the reader to question whether this world is full of meaningless chaos, or that justice strikes those that truly evoke it. One character Edgar brings up that, "the Gods are just" believing that individuals get what they deserve. However in the end of the play you realize the uncertain reality that although the wicked die, the noble die along with them, concluding with Lear holding the body of his dead daughter Cordelia. The word "justice" appears in many of the United States' most important documents, including the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Pledge of Allegiance. But for a word that's used so often, its true definition is still a topic of debate for philosophers. It is an ideal and a standard that people live by. We want to believe people get what they deserve and that when a person commits a crime they don't walk free and get away with it,

Illusions in Musee des Beaux Arts

Auden's "Musee des Beaux Arts" exemplifies the human nature of indifference towards various events that the writer has evidenced in the publication. The most significant and notable aspect of this poem is the application of allusions to develop both the direct and indirect connotations within the poem. Allusions in poems are described as concise and indirect phrases acquired from another individual's work or a citation of historical accounts or renowned icons in a bid to draw parallelism between the current situation and the referenced information or individual (Wilfred 689). Auden applies both Christian and Greek allusions in Musée des Beaux Arts for both plot progression and the formation of irony. The initial use of allusion in the poem is the phrase "The Old Masters" (Auden 2) a term used to refer broadly to European painters and artists prior to the nineteenth century. Auden reminisces on the fact that the early painters, "about suf

Ad Analysis - Chevy Silverado

Our society today seems like one that it is driven by the technology that was put forth by its creators yesterday and the work of white collar men and women. Both of these things do indeed power our world; however, our society could not thrive without the essential work done by the blue collar workers of America. An advertisement produced by Chevy, which introduces the all new 2014 Silverado, portrays their new truck as an the all-American truck for the all-American man. The sole focus and target audience of this commercial is a blue collar male. More specifically, it was directed at hard working and family oriented men that work on farms or ranches, encounter difficult terrains, or haul large items consistently. A large truck, particularly the 2014 Silverado, is able to provide this for these type of men. There was a country song, "Strong" by Will Hoge, playing in the background through the whole commercial. The lyrics of this song correlate perfectly with the central message that Chevy was attempting to convey in their advertisement. This song spoke of a man who was hard working, loved the same woman for all of his life, was cari

Social Media in a Growing Global Community

Social media has undeniably impacted communication at the local, national and global levels on a huge scale. We have access to information like never before, but more importantly the speed and efficacy of communication among the members of our communities characterizes the social media used by businesses, political campaigns and social awareness groups, not to mention personal relationships. We can reach other people at a rate we were not capable of before the internet and the social media interfaces. Already many studies have been performed which qualify social media as a major agent for social change and certainly sales in a widespread marketplace. There is plenty of room for the consumer, the participant and the producer, as well as analysts. The drawback is that currently a relatively limited percentage of the human population is represented on the internet. Globally speaking, there are more people without cell phones than with cell phones. By far most of what we see in social med

A Rose for Emily - Tobe and Emily

It is difficult to imagine a character more bizarre than Emily Grierson in William Faulkner's short story "A Rose for Emily." However, Tobe, Emily's old man-servant, who also served as her gardener and cook, is far more bizarre and mysterious than Emily. Much of his mystery lies in the fact that he devoted most of his life to her care. The story does not specifically indicate that Tobe had an emotional attachment to Emily, but something kept him there with her in her decaying old house. There was speculation that Emily and Tobe had a sexual relationship. Tobe was black man in the South after the Civil War, and he may have been thankful to Emily for his employment. He was loyal and discreet about Miss Emily's privacy. Tobe had a complex, caring relationship with Emily Grierson. There were years after the door to the upstairs bedroom was locked that Emily and Tobe remained in her house alone. They were isolated from the outside world. Emily and Tobe secluded themselves from the townspeople. When speculating about Emily and To

Seeing Animation as Art

Animation does not count as an arts credit in Wylie High School, one of the few credits you need to graduate from high school. In my sophomore year at Wylie High School in Wylie, Texas, I participated in a course for animation. In this course, students interested in the subject learn about the history of animation, timing with the use of key frames, and practicing modeling, materializing, and rigging characters and objects. While learning this, you will find that it takes skill and creativity to produce a work in computer graphics. Therefore, animation should most definitely be considered an art. First, however, we need to have an understanding of what animation is as well as art. Animation is an art that extends all the back to cave drawings in B.C and hieroglyphics in Egypt ("Meep! Meep!" A History of Animation). As the vivid form of art developed, people from all over the world experimented with animation and developed it, such as the Italian painters and artists from th

Narrative of The Trail of Tears

All of us traveling 1000 miles. Forced against our wills, forced to leave our land, forced to leave to go somewhere unknown to our minds, all thanks to Andrew Jackson. My father had spoken of him in cruel words. He had told me that Jackson had signed an "Indian removal act" that disrespected our rights. On our journey we only are allowed to have a limited amount of items with us, 600 wagons and carts, 5,000 horses, and 100 oxens. Our land was taken from us for $5.6 million, "The Treaty of New Echota". My father called it as an outrage. The white settlers had called us, "Savages", but I do not understand. My family, our tribe, are being separated. I over heard the soldiers saying that we are being organized into groups of 1000. We do not know if we are able to be with each other on our journey. Our journey starts tonight, when the sun sets. Sunset came, and all of us were being shoved by the American soldiers to move to out wagons. It all happened so fast The soldiers separated me from my family and my mother screamed for me. I cried out as they pulled me away from my

The Road of Autonomous Cars

In science fiction movies, there are many technical props always attracting audience's attention, especially cars. Cars as one of the tools are common in films, and they not only run on the road, but fly in the sky. A scene shows that in the morning one leading actor gets into a car and pushes the start button, the care then automatically starts its engine. After the driver speaks a location to the car, the car moves forward to the destination without any input of the leading actor. During the drive, all cars are running without any human control or operation, but each single car is in good order on the road, and passengers can do as they please such as drinking coffee and watching news. When arriving at the location, the leading actor gets out of the car and it parks itself. This kind of car has intelligent computer controlled system that can operate itself and follow voice control from the driver. Along with the technical high speed development, the scene of intelligent vehicle may

Polarity, Stability and Balances of Power

The basic factor that impacts the possibility of war and peace and also balance of power is the number of big powers that gets into the act in international system. Neo-realists correlate generally bipolarity as stability and decreasing the possibility of war and they correlate multipolarity as instability and further possibility of war. According to assailant realists the main purpose of states is obtaining power so if balance of power breaks down, the possibility of war will increase. On the other hand defensive realists assert that states must prioritize security not power and will be unwilling about war. Liberalism The most important feature of liberalism is a belief about increase in general welfare of society with sanctity of an individual and removing obstacles behind free attempt. Liberalism is a philosophic approach that focuses on people, features rationalism and foresees freedom of private life and limited government intervention to the public life. Liberalism w

Investigation Questions - The Great Gatsby

On 13 August 1922 at approximately 13:03, a murder and suicide case was reported to the NYPD and I was to investigate the incident. When we arrived at the site, we saw a dead body with a bullet in his chest, lying on a mattress in the swimming-pool. Two yards away from the swimming-pool, was another body lying, bleeding from the right side of his head and was holding a gun in his hand. There were four gentlemen present- Edward Willet (the chauffeur), Lance Stephenson (the butler), Kevin Ballard (the gardener) and Nick Carraway (a friend and neighbor). Apparently, the man who was shot in the chest was James "Jimmy" Gatz also known as Jay Gatsby who also owned the mansion and the swimming-pool. According to Mr. Nick Carraway, the other man was a mechanic who resided in the valley of ashes and ran an auto-repair shop. Nobody witnessed the incident so I took Mr. Carraway aside to ask him some questions about Jay Gatsby and the mechanic. Interrogation: Nick Carraway Q: Since
