The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri

In "The Namesake," by Jhumpa Lahiri, Gogol Ganguli who is the main character of the novel, tries to understand the meaning of his name. Identity is one of the main themes that the writer wanted to keep throughout the novel. The journey of the main character, Gogol Ganguli, starts with a letter from his parent's grandmother that never arrives. She was supposed to choose a suitable name for Bengali tradition. However , the letter does not arrive and his parents name him Gogol. The same name as a Russian author who saves his father in a train accident. By saving his father meaning that the book by the auther saves him not the author himself. Therefore the name has a very meaningful place in his father's life. The name is not common in America, in Bengali or even in Russia. People do not get a chance to choose their names. Their name is given when they are born. What is it in a name that is very important for people and why this is a lifetime matter for Gogol? When Gogol enters kindergart

Texting and Driving

Texting and driving is one of the main causes in teenage deaths. Teenagers like to think that their invincible, that nothing can hurt them but they fail to realize that they are not bulletproof. Being a teenager we don't think that if we text and drive that we can crash, we think that we're better than everyone and smarter so that it won't endanger our lives. In Florida we have a law to prevent texting and driving, yet in the last year roughly about 2,430 people were killed in motor vehicle collisions, so the law is not really being enforced. When a teenager first gets their license it's like giving a fallen angel wings, teenagers are so happy because it's a step towards freedom. Many teenagers pledge to not text and drive, however 40% of those teenagers still do. Commercials are made not just to make us sad, but it's to open our eyes to see that the devil never sleeps so don't risk your life just because you live by a motto that says "oh but that's not going to happen to me". Growing up we have a tendency of saying "gosh I can't wait till I'm 16 so I can drive." Te

Advertisements are Ideologically Problematic

Advertising has a long history of unethical and sexist representations of women in advertising media. It poorly represents women in a narrow light ignoring the vast differences and diversity that is the female gender. In this way advertising is ideologically problematic as it un-ethically targets an audience and in doing so it ignores, judges, objectifies and mistreats the audience it is targeting. This is especially obvious when women are used in advertisements where the target audience is specifically male. Sexism and sexist advertising is rife in the advertising industry even today when the idea of sexism and sexist behaviour are identified as inaccurate and inappropriate representations of women or men. Within the advertising industry female objectification and sexualization can appear in nearly any market although it appears the most within the fashion and beauty industries as well as the food and health industries. While this is the general place where the worst offenders of se

Art and Therapy Assessment

Treatment through artistic expression is one method for both therapy and assessment of DID. Lev-Wiesel (2005) conducted a study based on a technique known as the Draw-A-Person (DAP) test "to examine to what extent dissociative identity disorder is reflected in human figure drawings." In the study, Lev-Wiesel (2005) found that individuals who are diagnosed with DID "reveal their emotional states," by creating drawings that reflect the individuals' sub personalities. This is important for the therapist because it identifies the various sub personalities (that emerge in the drawings) which may be the first step towards, "establish(ing) a greater integration between" all personalities (Lev-Wiesel, 2005). The DAP is also an invaluable form of self-expression for an individual with DID because it creates an emotional and expressionistic outlet that may otherwise emerge

Still I Rise by Maya Angelou

After extensive research I have come across a poem that I believe to be "the best poem in the world." Still I Rise written by Maya Angelou is an inspirational poem symbolizing defiance and her strength to overcome negative criticism and oppression. There are many references to slavery and feminist rights throughout the piece that have a very powerful effect. She uses various amounts of poetic devices to further encapsulate the theme in this poem. These include the use of imagery, symbolism, metaphors and similes along with numerous sound devices. Maya Angelou utilized figurative imagery to exemplify the sad reality, which was the oppression of African Americans during slavery along with the mistreatment of women. "You may trod me in the very dirt But still, like dust, I'll rise." (3-4) In relation to the past events of slavery and the manner in which women were treated, these lines portray an image of poorly treated races and sexes being walked all over. The word

The Trail by Franz Kafka

In life, we are often faced with tasks where we as individuals are called to make decisions, to choose what is right and what is wrong. Making decisions has the possibility of changing your atmosphere, educationally, spiritually, physically, and psychologically. For example, Joseph K is the protagonist of the novel "The Trail," by Franz Kafka; where K unsuccessfully confronts arbitrary rules and a hopeless court system without knowing the crime with which he is guilt of. Kafka has a unique way of expressing in his writing. This novel is one of Kafka's best writings it is known because of the vision of bureaucracy. Has a pretty straight forward type of saying things, yet at the same time confusing because of the settings he writes about; that sense of darkness. In Kafka's writing he reflexes the some of his struggles he had as an individual. Another thing we can see is that K shares some characteristics that Kafka has in real life. They both had a really bad relationship with women, as

The Busy Life of a Mother

I have always known that being a wife and a mother were in my cards. I knew I wanted a cozy home, not too big or small, with a dog or two and a nice size kitchen with a shiny, clean floor that I'd happily mop everyday. I'd have salon styled hair and manicured nails and would get a monthly massage so I would look and feel like the mother and wife of the year. I never acknowledged, or even realized, that having a husband, a son and three dogs would mean I'd have sixteen dirty footprints tracked through that nice kitchen multiple times a day. That was only one (or sixteen) factor(s) that played into keeping up with and running a household. Hair? Sure, if you count dog hair. That stuff is everywhere. Nails? Don't make me laugh. Massage? Only when I rub my own temples to prevent my head from spontaneously combusting. It's widely understood that every person needs personal, quiet time. The only quiet time I seem to be able to muster are the two to three minute potty breaks I can squeeze in and rarely do those go without the shoutings of &q

Novel Summary - Beloved

In life, there are horrifying and painful moments that people do not always want to remember. They are trying to push them away by thinking that this is the best they can do. However, as Lois Lowry once said, "The worst part of holding the memories is not the pain. It's the loneliness of it. Memories need to be shared." People cannot close themselves and pretend that the past does not exist. In Toni Morrison's novel Beloved, the same issue has occurred. Since the characters do not accept their hurtful past, they do not want to talk about it, which causes them not to be able to move on and live in the present. The horrible past of slavery haunts Sethe and even though she is free, she cannot be fully free because of the memories she tries to forget. Memories hurt people and because of that they try to lock themselves out. However, the appearance of Beloved, the twenty year old girl that is believed to be the baby ghost, changes their lives upside down and do not allow them to f

Employers and Employee Rights

One of the most cherished rights of Americans would be the right to privacy, yet many working class Americans, unfortunately, have been subject to their rights being disrupted and their privacy being invaded at their workplace. One major issue that has existed and still exists in the workforce of America is civil liberties violations. According to her book Nickel and Dimed: On not getting by in America, Barbara Ehrenreich writes that "What surprised and offended me the most about the low-wage workplace was the extent to which one is required to surrender one's basic civil rights and- what boils down to the same thing-self-respect"(211). In other words, low-wage employees are being treated with indignity by inhumane employers of large corporations in order to keep them in their places for profit. This assertion implies that civil liberties of working class Americans are being violated today, as it is evident through the constant surveillance, unwarranted drug testing, and disc

America and Health Care Reform

The social problem relating to our country's current health care system is an issue all of society can empathize with. In our country, health care is funded and heavily regulated by the government which has worked in the past, however, those who regulate the health care system has seen the value of what they are able to profit and are turning away from the true meaning of health care. Depersonalization of patients, high costs of procedures, little opportunity for affordable health care, insurance plans that cost more than what they provide, defensive medicine practices are all issues with our current health care system. I find this issue important to recognize because our country is supposed to have the world's greatest health care system and we certainly spend enough on the system to have this, yet on a national level, our country ranks the lowest in overall patient safety, efficiency of treatment, cost-related access, equity, and long-lasting healthy lives, and rank the

Civil Construction in Brazil and the USA

According to Mello and Amorim, "civil construction is compound for a number of activities where each one has different levels of complexity. These activities are linked through a diversity of products with a variety of technological processes, associated to different types of demand" (390). Representing a big importance in the economic section in the USA and Brazil, civil construction has enhanced a lot of investments in the recent years. Due to the superior development of the United States in relation to Brazil, the civil construction in America impacts the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country with higher values than in Brazil. The United States is ahead Brazil with respect to technologies and methods. For that reason, it is understandable that Brazil does not have the same potential and capacity of civil construction compared to the United States. However, despite this developmental contrast, both countries have a lot of similarities. At present in the economic scena

Kisses from Katie and Three Cups of Tea

At eighteen would you be able to leave everything you knew and move to Uganda where you knew only one person and didn't even know the language? Most of us would probably say no. Katie Davis however, make the life changing decision to move to Uganda and help better the lives of a small village. Katie Davis story has touched my heart and I found it so inspiring of what she accomplished. I want my readers to understand better what this book is all about. I also want them to see how the philanthropic themes in Katie's story relates to readings I've read this semester, my personal views, and how it compares Three Cups of Tea. When Katie Davis was eighteen, she went with her mom to Uganda for a mission trip over winter break. That mission trip changed her life forever. She saw a country tormented by poverty and war and needed her help. A few months later she was later asked to come back and teach kindergarten. Her parents decided to let her go if she promised to return after a year and go t

Surprise and Disappointment in Baca's Family Ties

I am an African American who was adopted by a white family. Although I have more good memories than bad ones of my childhood, sometimes I felt like an outsider. When we had a family gathering, my grandmother on my mother's side did not acknowledge me at all. She would talk to everyone else in my family but I would be completely ignored by her. The poem "Family Ties" brought those childhood memories back up for me. It's strange to think that I could feel such an intense reaction from a light-hearted occasion, but it appears that I'm not the only one who felt like an outsider in her own family. In Jimmy Santiago Baca's narrative poem "Family Ties," the narrator uses several "plot twists" to contrast what he believes a family should be, and what he gets, instead – alienation and disappointment.   It is amazing that Baca starts his poem exactly how I was feeling in the beginning of a family gathering. The poem begins optimistically. The narrator seems

Review and Critique - Schindler's List

Creating a true connection with the sufferings of the victims of the nightmarish Holocaust is almost an impossible job to do. To even grasp the fact that more than six million Jews were slaughtered is incredibly difficult. Museums, books, documentaries, movies and images enable us to educate ourselves about the horror during World War II, but to comprehend the sufferings is an extremely difficult task. However, Steven Spielberg did an amazing job of re-creating that terrifying and dark period during World War II in his award-winning film, Schindler's List. What makes it so different from other documentaries or films is that this film focuses on the 1100 Jews who survived, yet very cleverly illustrates the fact of how helpless and powerless those innocent six million Jews were. The film is based on the true story of a vainglorious and greedy Nazi Czech businessman named Oskar Schindler, played by the very talented actor Liam Neeson, who ends up showing his unlikely humanitarian side whe

Autobiography of a Face by Lucy Grealy

Autobiography of a Face is a memoir written by a woman whose face is disfigured by childhood cancer. The author, Lucy Grealy, is both physically and emotionally impacted by the numerous operations on her jaw which left her looking different than the individuals surrounding her. In the memoir Autobiography of a Face, Grealy places a great emphasis on the significance of physical appearance in society. An argument central to the memoir is that society values what is seen as pretty or aesthetically pleasing rather than aspects that aren't necessarily physical. As a young woman who does not fit society's definition of beautiful, Lucy Grealy is faced with great adversity and struggles to see herself as normal. The idea that society values aesthetic beauty is supported by the way others treat Lucy Grealy, the actions Lucy Grealy takes to change her appearance, and by Lucy Grealy's inner thoughts and emotions throughout the memoir. Lucy Grealy illustrates a distinct difference in the way s

Hector and Achilles - Contrasting Heroes

Darien Kerr MWF 1:00-1:50 Hector and Achilles as Contrasting Heroes In the Iliad, Hector and Achilles are similar in many ways, such as both being phenomenal war heroes, but they also differ substantially. While they are both soldiers, they aren't fighting for the same reasons. Hector, is a family man, who fights to protect his land and the honor of his family. Whereas, Achilles fights only for himself and his own needs. They both believe they will die as warriors in battle, but still see the war very differently. Hector is heroic in his departure for war but fears what will happen to his wife and son if his predicted fate holds true, this is his humanistic side. We see them differ for example in book 22, where they use different heroic behaviors. Hector stays outside the city even when all of the other soldiers retreat from the Greeks. Priam, Hector's father, advises Hector to go to safety with the other soldiers, but Hector refuses. He doesn't back down, to protect his pride an

Short Story - Who Are You Trying to Find?

"Who are you trying to find?" I turned around to face the speaker. He was a man either in his early sixties or his late fifties. His hair, which looked like white fuzz, had begun to recede back into nothingness. He wore a plaid shirt that clearly displayed years of wear and brown, baggy pants that swayed with the breeze – had it not been for his belt, I'm sure that they would have fallen off a long time ago. He smiled at me and I could see multiple golden molars shining like crystalline rocks in a cavern. He was extremely short – maybe four foot seven – which was odd for a man his age. I was intrigued and decided to converse with him. "No one in particular," I replied. "I was actually just passing by and wondered whether there was anyone I knew. This is a pretty small town and I've resided here for years, so I wouldn't be surprised if I did." "Do you have a name?" "Are you asking for mine?" He shook his head and smiled

History of the Louisiana Purchase

Thomas Jefferson faced a major dilemma when deciding to purchase the Louisiana territory. One of his dilemmas came from him being a strong advocate for a strict interpretation of the Constitution. Jefferson strongly supported state rights. He believed that rights not stated in the Constitution should be given to the states. However, no one anticipated a deal such as the Louisiana Purchase to be possible. The power to purchase land from another government giving the power to expand the United States, were never given to the federal government. There was many advantages along with disadvantages that could have been associated with this dilemma, but Jefferson took a major risk in purchasing the land, anyways. But that great risk also left possibility for great rewards. The Louisiana Territory was a vast area of land in the Americas owned by the French under the control of Napoleon Bonaparte. Napoleon's original plans for this land was to reestablish France in the New World. This

Words Cut Deep

It all started off with three words: "I hate you." These words were said to an old friend of mine by his mother. This friend was several years older than I and that was not the first time he was psychologically abused. He was constantly mistreated by his own flesh and blood which lead to a horrible childhood, miserable adulthood and a terrible relationship with his mother. It is sad to say that he does not have a promising future all because of the way he was treated. If he were to be physically abused instead of psychologically, he could have gotten better over time, but with psychological abuse, it can be very hard to get past the "I hate you", "you are nothing", and the "I never wanted you." Emotional and verbal abuse are forms of In many cases, psychological abuse can be more traumatic than physical abuse. Bruises, cuts, and broken bones can heal, but verbal abuse can lead to many future psychological problems. Not everyone recognizes all of the pain

Overview of the Automotive Industry

The automobile industry is a wide range of companies and organizations. There are many parts involved such as development, manufacture, and motor vehicles. In this essay I will focus more on the motor vehicles part. The automobile industry is one of the most important economics sectors in the world, by the magnitude of the revenue. There is a nearby industry to the automobile industry, which is the manufacturing industry. The manufacturing industry is also a wide range of companies building big and small part of products to be used in other industries. The manufacturing industry seems to be the inputs for the automobile industry. For example, the body part of the vehicles is belonged to the manufacturing industry. The manufacturing industry also produces seat in the vehicle, doors, and many other parts. The automobile industry combines those input together to build a vehicle, and this is solely from automobile industry. The manufacturing and the automobile industry are neither substitu

The Holocaust is filled with horror, terror, hunger, painful, etc that moves people's heart with pity and shock. Night is a memoir written by Elie Wiesel which tells the true story of Elie's experience and everyone else's in the concentration camps. During the reign of the nazis, German soldiers invade the town of Sighet, Russia, to expel all of the Jews to the concentration camps. There were many Jews' lives taken and they experienced many hardships during their time. For Eliezel, his hardest hardship is committing to his father. Although he admits to the power of the instinct for self-preservation, because of his commitment to his father throughout the prison camp experience, and because of his reactions to other sons who do abandon or turn on their fathers, Wiesel and his father apparently favors commitment to family over commitment to self-preservation. In the concentration camps, Eliezel makes a commitment to his father to not abandon him and he tries to help him survive throughou

Movie Review - Gladiator

Gladiator is loosely based on real events that occurred within the Roman Empire in 180 AD. Directed by Ridley Scott and released in 2000, it features an excellent Hollywood actor, Russell Crowe, and terrific supporting artists Joaquin Phoenix, Connie Nielsen and Richard Harris who really gave justice to their characters. The film's timeless appeal is fueled by its simple plot, excellent character depiction and astonishing special effects which in totality easily warrants a 5-Star rating. The movie's plot is simple. It chronicles the plight of a good general who suffered injustice and lives on to seek revenge. Unlike suspense movies where the succeeding scenes are not predictable, the audience can easily predict the transition of events in "Gladiator." However, this simplicity of plot did not make the movie less interesting: rather, it ignites the curiosity of the audience to further see how the main character would fulfill his revenge. There are no unexpected twists and th
