America and the Thirteen Original Colonies

The thirteen colonies were the perfect way to start our country. Because of where they were located, they gave our nation some of the defining cultural aspects we still see today. The colonies were split into three main sections: the southern colonies, the middle colonies, and the New England colonies. Each different area was responsible for providing different goods or services for the others. The southern colonies were based off production of large cash crops on plantations. The middle colonies had land that was fertile to grow small local farms but didn't have the capability to handle the size or labor of a cash crop. The New England colonies were a big religious experiment. They were the first time anyone had really had religious freedom to practice what they pleased, so it was something people had to get used to. The southern colonie

Trench Warfare During World War I

World War One was a global war centred in Europe which started in 1914 and lasted until 1918. It was a modern war with aeroplanes, machine guns and other deadly weapons such as the tank. During this period of time, millions of soldiers were killed, various advancements were made in military technology, and a wide range of different warfare techniques and tactics were developed. Consequently, trench warfare affected Australian soldiers in many different ways. It is evident that trench warfare affected Australians both mentally and physically because 75% of World War One deaths were due to trench warfare. If men were not wounded physically, they would be wounded mentally. Furthermore, the harsh and brutal conditions of the trenches resulted in men developing many diseases and brutal infections such as dysentery, trench foot, lice and even trench fever. The great amount of newly advanced military technology of the First World War shaped a war more of stalemate than anything else. The

Reforming America's Criminal Justice System

Reforming America's criminal justice system is a top priority, in order to end racism, and to clear up the population's tarnished image of law enforcement. Although the media, has its right to portray things the way they desire, we still have to fix what they depict, as it is our government/country that we live in and we are supposed to take pride in it. Also, let's not undermine the fact that what the media portrays is accurate, and there are many instances of corrupt officials in the justice system abusing their authority that the news does not capture. Racism is a war, just as crime is, and I believe strongly that if the law enforcement is polished up, so that the view against them is less harsh and dangerous, we may be able to sustain, or better yet end racism in this country as a whole. First, off we must realize that the result of ending racism can be none other than a positive aspect in this country. Racism is a war, in which many people have been falsely accused, jailed and killed for hundreds of years now. The problem that we face with racism is a grave one, as we must

Female Independence in The Story of an Hour

In Kate Chopin's short story, "The Story of an Hour," Louise Mallard is introduced as the housewife who has a heart condition and has recently discovered the "death" of her husband. When Mrs. Mallard was told about her husband's death, she was initially emotional, but because of her husband's death she reaped freedom and was over joyed. Unfortunately, once she learns that her husband is not dead, instead of exulting her husband's return she regretted abandoning her moment of freedom. This short story demonstrates the issue of male dominance and the role of woman in marriage in the society during her time. Kate Chopin portrays inside this story the lack of women's freedom in the 1800's. Mrs. Mallard represents a negative view of marriage by becoming overjoyed that her husband has died. But if the two telegraphs would not have been heard then Mr. Mallard would have made it home way before the news could reach his wife. During this time period, the telegraphs was the

The Civil War and American Tensions

During the years leading up to the American Civil War, there were many factors that lead to the occurrence of tension and conflict between the Northern states, the Southern states, and the Western States. The main causes of this tensions were differences between the economies, the social lives of the citizens, political differences, and differences in the definition of freedom in different places. All of these factors were particularly present between the Northern states and the Southern states, and the differences were so huge that they eventually were the cause of war. The first major difference between the North and the South were in the economies. Down South, cotton was king. This was a common saying used by Southerners to describe their economy. The saying means that cotton is the most important item in their economy. Most Southerners had most if not all of their money invested in cotton, whether it be in land to grow cotton, or the people who did all of the actual manual labor,

Global Warming Awareness

Is anyone apprehensive about how the environment will be years to come? Nearly every day there is news about the environment based on jam-packed landfills, polluted water, and reduced air quality, leading to different temperatures and bipolar climate changes known as global warming. Global warming is one of the biggest problems faced in today's world. Greenhouse gases, pollution, and deforestation is effected and increasing global warming, thus becoming very dangerous for human life. As population grows, lifestyle changes, if small changes were made, future generations can still have natural resources, polar bears, and a clean, healthy environment. One way global warming is increasing is by greenhouse gases. Greenhouse gases are chemical compounds found in the Earth's atmosphere that allows sunlight to enter the Earth, while absorbing heat coming from the Earth's surface. There are many gases in this so-called "greenhouse," such as methane, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, an

History of the United States Constitution

In 1787, the most respected and well-known people of the new nation of the United States came together to resolve problems of the first constitution, the Articles of Confederation. The Articles served as a written constitution for the people to put down their ideas during the years 1781 to 1789 but was plagued by numerous complications. The Articles gave the states sovereignty, freedom, and power to govern themselves but must limit power of the national government. This included the inability of the Confederation Congress to tax leading to the strenuous battle in alleviating the national debt and paying the United States' own soldiers. They were losing credibility as a nation because they couldn't pay back the other nations who had helped them in the Revolutionary War. They were being pushed around into treaties like the Jay-Gardoqui Treaty. They had the inability to raise an army to defend against Native American attacks and attacks from other nations. Civic virtue could no longer he

Introduction to Laozi and Daoism

Daoism is the only religion that entirely was started in China which strongly tight with Chinese cultures, local traditions, history and academic knowledge. Unlike other religions, Daoism is a subject of science with a religious clothes. Taoists observe the world, seek for "Way/Path" and try to find its relationship with themselves. "Way/Path" is the heart concept of Daoism. People are initially came from the "Way/Path" and finally we are going back to this "Way/Path". In chapter twenty-five of Dao De Jing, Laozi described "Way/Path" as "Before the physical universe existed. The potential of all things permeated time and space. It was silent and empty, loud and pregnant, static and dynamic, hot and cold, light and dark. The potential of all things, for lack of another name, I call it infinite." (Donald Sturgeon 2006) In this sentence, the infinity is the "Way/Path", just with different translations. Laozi explained t

To let Geppetto know she was pregnant. Geppetto was so happy that he decided to go out to celebrate and close the shop early. The Glendale Main Library

The Main Library is the best public library in the city of Glendale. The first time I was there I went with my son. As we were walking around the building, we saw many peacocks walking free. My son was amazed and wanted to get close to them to admire them closely. As we approached them we saw bushes, trees and flowers that we've never seen before, as well as some beautiful sculptures. When we finally made it inside it was incredible. There's a kids section full of games, computers books, puzzles and many attractions. I never made it through the whole library that first time so then I knew I had to go back to see the rest. The Main Glendale Public Library is an incredible place to go because of its access to knowledge, inspiring environment and historic memorial filled with art. The Main library is filled with resources and services to empower the community's access to information and knowledge. Columbus, Winthrop and Williams

It is not known how long humans have inhabited North America. Archeologists believe Viking ships explored the far northeastern coast of North America around 1000 A.D. As far as recorded history, the story of the American nation and its culture begins with the 1492 discovery of the New World by Italian explorer Christopher Columbus. Columbus was a mapmaker who believed that Europeans could reach the Indies more efficiently by ocean travel than across land. While there remained a number of potential dangers to such excursions over water, Christopher Columbus believed that God directed him to set forth on a westward journey across the Atlantic Ocean. Ultimately, this led to the discovery of the new world on August 3, 1492. "Put it all together and you might say that Columbus was the inventor of the American Dream" (Vizenor 526). Although Columbus discover the new world, it was people like John Winthrop and Roger Williams that were integral parts of founding America. Winthrop was a we

Richie Perry throughout the start of his life in the book, he was having a trage

International Business and Globalization

Globalisation can be described as a phenomenon whereby events, decisions and activities on one side of the world often have a significant impact on individuals and communities in other areas of the world (Steinmetz, 2010). It is the shift towards a more integrated and interdependent world economy, (Yu, 2013). Globalisation has had a significant impact on New Zealand's food industry, in both positive and negative ways. Traditional food and the consumer demand for Natural food such as farm-fresh produce, and home-style cuisine is traditionally what New Zealanders consumed and demanded for. However more recently globalisation has contributed to see a move from the meaning of traditional New Zealand food to a more diverse food industry. Technological and social environmental factors have both been largely influenced from the impact globalisation has had on New Zealand's food industry. Technological advances such as communication and transportation of the twentieth and twenty- first centu

British Media Censorship During the Falkland War

On Jan 3rd, 1833, the Argentine flag, which was first raised on the Falkland Islands on Nov 6th, 1820, was lowered by the crew of a British warship and replaced by the British flag. After the British took possession of the Falkland Isles they settled it with sheep breeders, 500 kilometers ahead of the argentine coast. At that time the feud arose between Argentina and Britain. By 1982, the quarrel had been going on for decades and there had even been some shootings around the Islands. Despite this and the warnings, which had been given weeks before the invasion, London did not see the event coming. Three months before the war started, the Argentines had ordered all map material about the Falklands from London – and it was delivered promptly. Ten days before the attack the Times reported, that British secret service agents had radioed the mission plans of the Argentine marine to London and that American espionage satellites had observed the preparations for the invasion and told t

School Districts in British Columbia

Do you actually know how to fill out a job application form? Do you have a bank account with a good amount of money in it? Are you an organized person and can handle a real life situation? Kids spend too much time in school learning about history, they learn how to do algebra, measure a circle, they learn about galaxies and how to create explosions, but is that what's really going to get them far in life? Are these facts something they will forget in the next couple of years? The B.C school district teaches kids so much about other subjects and really doesn't get them ready for the real world. There are many reasons to support my statement on why the B.C. school district teaches kids so much about other things and doesn't actually keep them focused on the real world and the finical difficulties that they need in order to do well in life. High school is giving kids too many chances, a class in life skills should be mandatory, learning doesn't actually "pay" the bills. For one, have you

A Mother Forever

The 7th of April faded into the night as I watched the buildings grow smaller and smaller in the rear view mirror. We were already halfway to the outskirts of town when I wept. My mother beside me, with her eyes shut tight, stopped herself from sobbing as I hugged myself tighter and felt the summer breeze wipe off the ripple of tears at the corner of my eyes. It was a Sunday evening and we were riding the bus heading to my mom's small town after her mother died. The 2-hour ride from Gensan to Digos city was reduced to a deep slumber and by the time I woke up, it was already midnight. I was eleven years old that time and it was the first funeral vigil I attended. It was not what I had in mind at all. The last night of the wake was packed with people, food and prayers. It was more like a reunion as I first met my distant relatives where hugs, pictures, phone numbers and small talks were exchanged. To my surprise, drinks, board and card games were allowed in what was supposed to be a m

Allegories in Literature

An allegory is a story, poem, or picture that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning, typically a moral or political one. The play Everyman and the movie The Seventh Seal both contain many allegorical aspects. They each contain different forms of allegorical encounters, showing the different ways in which an allegory can exist. Everyman is more of a realistic, moral type allegory, and The Seventh Seal is more along the lines of a political, social allegory. Everyman is a dramatized allegory. It takes us through a journey in which this man, representing literally every man, encounters Death, and has to go through his riches(goods, good-deeds, beauty, etc.) for companions to 'ride' along his side to Death. Everyman has a hard time with discovering what can go with him, and what must stay behind. In order to go to heaven, Everyman has to figure out which ones can in fact go with him to Death. In the turnout of things, Everyman goes to heaven by Death with knowledge and good-d

Characteristics of Systems Thinking

Systems thinking as a theory is a collection of ideas and thoughts spanning back to ancient philosophers such as Aristotle and Lao Tsu [ CITATION Cabnd l 1033 ]. Other influential systems thinking scholars include W. Edwards Deming, Jay Forrester, and Peter Senge. Senge (2006) described systems thinking as a branch of knowledge for seeing the whole picture as well as the interconnected parts. The context of systems thinking is seeing the relationship of two or more variables, i.e., how they connect to each other as well as to other variables. Patterns of connectivity, movement, and change define systems thinking, for systems thinking applies to active, recurring, repetitive systems [ CITATION Mel09 l 1033 ]. Looking at the system broadly instead of a single loop, snapshot, or moment in time is the essence of system thinking. Basic Characteristics of Systems Thinking Mella (2009) defines five rules for understanding the basic characteristics of systems thinking. The first three rules

Building a Casino in Grenada

We have heard many talks from politicians and debates among citizens on the implementation of a casino in Grenada. With the current economic downturn we are currently undergoing it would be a wise decision the government can make in order to boost the economy through tax revenues, employment, improve infrastructure and an increase in our tourism sector. Many countries drive to legalized casino gambling with the desire to increase their state tax revenue which would be a plus to their economy. There have been many research conducted on well developed countries than Grenada is today on the effects they have faced due to casino legalized gambling. With no remorse I strongly oppose to allowed casino in Grenada due to the social, economic and being a Christian society that we are. Grenada is known and stands firmly as a Christian society. With this being said simple means that our Christian beliefs, customs and values that our religious groups practices are basically of the same origin. W

The Pros of a Marxist Society

An ideal Marxist society provides equality for everyone, eliminating class distinctions. It gives control to the largest portion of the people, advocates for the equality of women in the work force, and provides for all. Therefore, Marxism is ultimately the correct way to organize a society, if only for the reason that the state is controlled by the proletariat, the largest sector of the population. The educational structure of a Marxist society consists of pupils obeying their instructors, much like the social classes (the workers obeying those with money). This educational structure is ideal because Marxism highly encourages an educated population. The main reason for this is to raise labor productivity and advance societal and technological developments. The education system also instills nationalism in citizens, as well as teaching them to live a self-fulfilling life as dictated by the social norms of communism. A sense of nationalism in the l

Environment and the Economy

I am of the belief that the above statement is fundamentally untrue, but what I hope to illustrate through this paper is exactly how strong a relationship exists between economic growth and environmental degradation. Environmental degradation can be defined as the deterioration of the environment through depletion of resources such as air, water, and soil, the destruction of ecosystems and the extinction of wildlife. From an ecological/environmental perspective, the argument is often made that economic growth has a negative impact on the environment. This statement is true to a certain extent. It is true in the idea that developing countries that develop through industrialisation are going to produce a lot more pollution, through carbon emissions and use up natural resources such as forestry in order to produce more goods and grow their economy. But with advancements in technology over the last number of decades developing countries can now become more efficient and environmentally con

Aspects of Logic in Faith

Throughout the past few centuries, man has delved into many different ways to define logic, from philosophy to the scientific method. As mankind has struggled to find connections between the physical and spiritual realm, most have come to the conclusion that no such association exist in that one depends on the other. As a general school of thought, logic is devoid of faith and faith must exist without the need of proof, or reason. One may assert that such a correlation would concern the ability of science to prove the existence of what one believes through faith. Faith, though, is connected to logic in that it requires reason for its existence. Pascal discusses the importance of reason and its validity within the human mind. Although he believes the senses cannot be trusted, and that reason is all that can be trusted, Pascal believes that reason must be paired with faith in order to not be flawed. Pascal attempts to understand the world through different ways that he believes are credi

History of Italian-Americans

Italians did not immigrate to America in very large numbers before 1850. South America was the predominate area of immigration for Italians. The rate of immigration from Italy started changing around 1880. After 1880 Italian immigration to America began to increase. During the time period between 1850 and 1880 most Italian immigrants were from the northern regions of Italy. The area the immigrants came from began to change after 1880 with the majority coming from southern Italy. There were many push factors that contributed to the changes in the pattern of immigration from Italy to America which resulted in 3.2 million Italians immigrating to America between 1900 and 1920. According to census reports in 1850 the Italian population in America was 3,645 (Iorizzo & Mondello, 1980). Between 1850 and 1880 the number of Italian immigrants in America basically doubled each year ending with an Italian population of 44,230 in 1880. There was then an increase in immigration from Italy. The 1

The Good Samaritan Window

The Good Samaritan Window is an art piece that has stood out to me due to the fact that it represents stranger, in this case Jesus caring for others and helping them. Good Samartian defines the meaning of selfless acts for the greater good of mankind. This art piece is dated back to 1200-1210 and is located in the Chartes Cathedral on the south side of the church. This art piece is not completed by just one artist but a large work group of roman decent. Stained glass windows are distinctive to the gothic period, it became more common during this time period than ever before. As a child I remember sitting in church and mesmerized by the beautiful colors and fine detail in the artwork. The Good Samartian is one of the more important pieces of this period of time and many churches still use stained glass to tell a story. This paper will going into detail on stained glass windows and the significance of the Good Samartian Window, how it compares to art work of this time period, and its

Argumentaitve Essay - The Death Penalty

What jurisdiction does the law have over life? How is killing someone justice for another person's death? A death penalty is the sentence of execution for murder and other capital crimes. This denial of life, also known as capital punishment, contradicts what the United States of America was founded on. Over the years with the death penalty active, there has never been a notable decrease in the national murder rate. Not only is it an expensive method, it does not deter crime and it is unjust and bias. This act is immoral and should be banned indefinitely. People are sent to jail when they commit a crime and in some cases to a death penalty sentence if their offense is murder. Having these offenders in a correctional facility, with all the necessary restrictions, is much more inexpensive than convicting them to a death penalty. According to Richey (2009) a study held by the Death Penalty Information Center (DPIC) holding an inmate in a facility without parole costs about 11.5 million dolars while a capital punishment can cost up to 137 mill
