Practice Makes Perfect and the Transfer Principle

Many athletes of vary skill and ability have often been told that "you will play (in the game or event) just like you practice", by their coaches. I myself, as a high school and collegiate distance runner was often told to "run in practice like you run on race day." Looking back, I now know that my coaches were using the Principle of Transfer to maximize my performance. Coaches are always trying to motivate their athletes and so it is common for coaches to say "you need to practice like you play". Athletes often dismiss this statement as just another "line" designed to make athletes work hard in practice. The Principle of Transfer however is not just something coaches say for motivation it is, in fact, an important part of training. Historically, there are several examples of athletes and teams preparing in conditions that were very close to the competition conditions and having great results in the competition. Results in competition can be mini

Rehabilitating Victims of Human Trafficking

Human trafficking is the fastest growing criminal industry in the world, currently second after illegal drug-trade. Human trafficking is a violation of human rights and considered to be a form of modern day slavery, the illegal trade of humans for forced labour or exploitation; fortunately it is recognized as a growing issue in the United States. Exploitation refers to the use of other individuals for prostitution or any forms of forced labour. Trafficking victims do not have to be foreign born or transported across borders; in fact, many are born in the United States and are never moved from their recruitment city. I propose that the U.S government should educate women and young children who may become victims of trafficking, spread awareness, and to have more efficient programs to help the trafficking victims recover. Woman and young children living in poverty are normally the ones who fall in the trap of the traffickers. Due to poverty many woman are not educated and are not employ

My Sweet Sixteen

La fiesta de quinceañera, always known as a sweet fifteen, is a celebration of a girl's fifteenth birthday, celebrated by Hispanics or Latinos. The fifteenth birthday is a special time period for young woman, it is celebrated differently because it is the transition from childhood to womanhood. In the past, elderly women taught girls to cook and weave. They also taught girls about child rearing, along with marriage preparation. Today, it's still celebrated for the same purpose, the transition, but not for the preparation of marriage and being a housewife. Nowadays, it's a tradition to celebrate a young girl's journey from childhood to maturity, even "gringos" celebrate this tradition. I remember my sweet fifteen like it was yesterday, it was my special moment and the best night in my life. At first, I didn't want a sweet, but after a lot of deliberation my family finally convinced me. Planning a sweet fifteen is fairly similar to planning a wedding. Before anything, I had to f

At Mornington by Gwen Harwood

In Gwen Harwood's poem, 'At Mornington', she explores the transient nature of life contrasted with the finality of death. The contemplative and solemn tone exhibits the serious nature of the poem as the speaker reflects on life, aging and mortality through Harwood's use of natural imagery. The speaker initially recalls an early memory of attempting to walk on the waves at a beach – a childlike belief that alludes to the Biblical story of Jesus walking on water. The waves, which are later described as the death that will "seize [them] at last" adds significance to the speaker's desire to walk on water, as it shows a youthful naivety in the belief that they could cheat death; their lack of control over the forces of nature and death evident as they are so easily "caught and rolled" by the water. Harwood's utilisation of the word "rattl[e]" not only evokes the sound of the shells but also reiterates the connotations of childhood toys and innocen

Single and Multi-Tasking in School

Let me ask you: what are your children doing while they are working on the homework assignment? Although the answer seems to be obvious "They are doing their homework!" the reality is that our children may also be surfing the net, checking their messages and listen to the music all at the same time. The image of a diligent student, who sits in the library with a stack of books completely soaked into the studying process remained somewhere in the past. Although the digital era has opened the information borders and has brought many positive changes in the world, it creates countless opportunities for distraction, the most worrisome of which is the habit-forming practice of multitasking. Doing just one thing at a time seems luxurious, even wasteful. Your children are growing up in a world in which so-called multitasking is a standard and even considered crucial for success. Many students boast they can write an essay, reply to the messages, talk to a friend and watch a show at

The Suez Crisis and the Imperial and Cold War Crisis

The Suez Crisis of 1956 demonstrates the inextricable link between the vehemence of Cold War politics and the decline of the once invincible imperial powers. The consequences of the crisis acted to ensure the decline of Anglo-French dominance in both Egypt and throughout the Middle East. This not only reduced the power of, particularly, Britain internationally, but it saw a surge in the popularity and the belief in the ability of nationalist leaders, in particular Egyptian president Gamal Abdel Nasser. The crisis also highlighted the Cold War climate engulfing the globe. A struggle for both Arab and geographical influence saw American president Dwight Eisenhower and Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev fight for an Egyptian alliance, wielding weapons of promissory fiscal rewards, diplomatic influence, and arms. The Suez crisis undoubtedly resulted in a pivotal shift in global politics. The dire consequences for France, and Britain domestically and internationally illustrate how the Suez

Maya Lin: Mover of Minds and Landscapes

In a field based so heavily in subjectivity, definitively answering the question, "Why is that art?" proves to be nearly impossible. The Dadaists, for instance, defy the laws of traditionally accepted creative practices and celebrate giving the power of artistic definition to the artist. With Dadaism, aestheticism pales in comparison to politically or socially charged content-or lack thereof-and gives way to a movement best described as "avant-garde." Formalists, on the other hand, would define art in a manner quite opposite to that of the Dadaists. Formalism admires the aesthetic; it celebrates proper technique and the high-quality implementation of the elements of art, such as space, form, and color. With such varying descriptions of the qualities that validate art as "art," where does one draw the line? (Pun intended.) According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, art is defined as "something that is created with imagination and skill and that is be

Breaking Tradition in Academia

Abstract Online education is vested, thriving, and will remain so due to the groundbreaking advances of it as of late. It is creating fresh, innovative chances for students as well as for pedagogue, architects of education, and the institutions where learning happens themselves. Much of the scholarly advances today will be implemented and molded into university plans to convert campuses into centers for blended courses that serve traditional and non-traditional ideals on college campuses across the United States. Some of what is learned will greatly improve methodologies in education and perhaps shake other significant issues, such as time to complete; a degree becomes more time-consuming with added requirements. Online education is already providing superior avenues, which allow others to access education on their own time. This in-turn will benefit all those interested in continuing their education by providing access in the coming years to achieve the end goal of successfully compl

The UK and the Human Rights Act

The United Kingdom (UK) introduced human rights in the domestic courts through the passing of the Human Rights Act (HRA) of 1998. It is through their dualistic system, this act served as a facilitator towards the access of the Convention rights within the UK domestic courts. The efficiency of the rights within the UK is commendable where persons are able to enforce rights against the state and as a result of cases in the past; the Parliament usually adjusted or reviewed their legislation in order to make it compatible with Convention law. Presently, there has been the proposal for a British Bill of Right and Responsibilities (BOR) to replace the HRA, the proposal has been awaken by the criticisms of the HRA, and the case made for a BOR would be assessed accordingly. First of all one should take note of the inefficiencies within the operation of the HRA in the UK. There has always been a tension between the enforcement and protection of a fundamental human right as opposed to the main

Wholesale Recall: A Comparison with Common Threads

The political and social criticism of the story We Can Remember It For You Wholesale (1966) written by Phillip K. Dick , stays mostly intact in the film rendition titled Total Recall directed by Paul Verhoeven (1990). These social and political criticisms were addressed in different ways between the mediums and thus make slightly different commentaries directed to two very different audiences that reflect a message of historical significance specific to that period in time. Some of the more significant differences that change what the movie says about the world at the time include things as obvious as the setting (solely Chicago in the story and on Mars for the majority of the film), the inclusion of a love interest which was completely absent in Dick's short story, and one of the most interesting and story altering changes in the conclusion of each and what that conclusion says about the events and assumptions we make about the story as a whole. Each of these differences were made fo

An Amazing Lady - First Sergeant Gwendolyn White

She is more than a coach, teacher, and instructor to me. She is considered in my heart as a mother, grandmother, and godmother to me. What an amazing woman she is! When I came to high school, I joined the drill team. It was run by a little old lady that stood about five feet even. But, there was a lot of fight in this woman. You can just look at her and tell she meant business. At first, I was afraid of her and never wanted to be in her presence because she is just that intimidating. But, she was an amazing woman and taught me so many things in life that I will never forget. Throughout my freshman year of high school there was only one person besides my family I could confine to. She was always there for me, although; it did not just happen that way. I had to work to build that relationship with her. And being that I was a freshman was not helping. I use to get shut down by all the upper classmen when I would try to speak to her. I think it was because they knew she would love me so much. I use to stay at practice all way until she left and come in before she did to help her. I wanted her to know that I was a natural born leader just like she was and that we were a lik

The Human Spirit in King Lear

Our spirit is what can fuel us in our lives, and the conflicts that we face can affect and damage our spirit. In the classic tragedy play, King Lear, playwright William Shakespeare suggests that, often times, the most painful conflicts we have are those that we impose upon ourselves. When we fail to be truthful about the conflict we have cause and the repercussions of the conflict, the negative emotions generated by the lack of self-honesty can eat away at the spirit, making us lose touch of reality. We often go through a cycle of how we deal with our conflict, to try and get it off of our spirit but not accepting the blame. We will push the situation on others, to try to make us feel better and uplifted because we were able to take the liability of the situation off of us and move on. "Nothing will come of nothing." Stated by King Lear. This statement was his reaction to Cordelia's response to the amount of love that she has for her father. Cordelia can be perceived to be t

Energy Consumption and Environmental Health

Collective Resilience: Decreasing Vulnerability Paralleling an exponential growth in global population, increasing worldwide energy production and consumption generates vulnerabilities in human and environmental health. The global dependence on energy creates a demand for the production of various sources of energy. Though mostly in abundance, sources of coal, oil, nuclear and other forms of harnessing energy have impacts on environmental health, both in use and production. Whether it is gaseous emissions, or chemical exposures, these energy sources have taxing effects on the environment, which, in turn, creates vulnerabilities to human health. Similarly, differences in economic availabilities cause discrepancies in consumption, production and vulnerability. Areas of economic disarray have limitations on efficient and clean energy use, paving the way for disaster and health burdens. On the contrary, developed countries over-consume, and create their own vulnerabilities by structuri

On the Genealogy of Morality

In the first essay of his book On the Genealogy of Morality, Friedrich Nietzsche discusses the origins and the evolution of morality. His discussion leads to two central themes that become the driving force for his characterization of people's perception of "good" and "bad", master morality and slave morality. Master morality according to Nietzsche is the system of values and principles that is held by noble or powerful people[GM,I,3]. Their concept of morality is characterized by valuing strength, wealth and happiness as "good" and weakness and destitution as "bad". The priests and the poor who abide by slave morality on the other hand detest master morality due to the fact that they perceive the noble as the oppressors and thus develop a sense of anger towards their existence. Two important characteristics that are a byproduct of these systems are the concept of depth of thought and the valuation of an adherence to structure as opposed to

The Process of Learning

In general, learning is often identified as the acquisition of knowledge or skills through study, active engagement with experience, and being taught. It is also considered as a valuable treasure that will follow its owner everywhere and continuously pursued throughout life. As Pablo Picasso, one of the most famous artists, asserted,' I am always doing that which I can't do, in order that I may learn how to do it.' He truly understood the value and importance of learning. I have been learning numerous life skills such as verbal and written communication, interpersonal and intrapersonal, leadership and servanthood, technical and manual skills for almost twenty-six years and clearly realized the only appropriate that I offer up a definition of learning as I see it. Therefore, in my view, what I define learning is it does require – in varying times and circumstances- activities like hands-on practice and reflection. It is also a lifelong process, which includes learning from mis

Euthanasia and the End of Life

We could all die tomorrow. Hell, I could die while writing this essay, yet that doesn't determine the hand I had in the matter. Freedom of choice is what this country is built on, yet when it comes to physician assisted-suicide people turn pale at the thought of ending their own life, especially when it is your doctor helping you through it all. Death shouldn't be the first plan in mind, because the doctor should use every available opportunity in prolonging the life of a patient, although it may come down to it. A fair 55% percent of terminal patients die in pain, and medicine practitioners are doing everything they can as far as the law allows them. Those are the odds in play as imbalanced as they seem, and there isn't much to do about it. As scary as it may seem, the reality is that euthanasia is an escape for terminally ill patients, children, Alzheimer's, and other rare cases alike. The use of assisted-suicide has gone through the roof and opposing sides are doing what they can t

The Truth of Investigative Journalism

"There can be no higher law in journalism than to tell the truth and shame the devil."- Walter Lippmann Investigative journalism plays an important role in our society. Usually this form of journalism tries to unravel the truth by exposing facts and evidences. Most of the times investigative journalists' articles cover issues like money laundering, fraud, governmental corruption and etc. However, some reporters do not take into account the risks and perils associated with their profession. To be an investigative journalist sometimes could turn out to be one of the most dangerous professions. Turning the pages of history back, there are a lot of examples which show that this form of journalism involves a lot of risk and serious consequences. For instance, the death of Michael Hasting, a famous investigative reporter, shocked the whole world. The 33-year-old journalist died in a car accident. Nevertheless, many believe that this case was not just a tragic coincidence, but orde

Love is an Act of Endless Forgiveness

Recently, a survey conducted on the Internet with regard to love in everyone's heart raises a heated debate, which has become a public contention. Some people claim that love is just the feeling between two individuals who show some affection to each other. However, the others are of the opinion that love is a universal value and the entire cosmos abounds in love. From my perspective, I took for granted all the times that love can be regarded as an act of endless forgiveness. Especially when the following aspects are taken into deliberation. First and foremost, what is love? Everyone at some point in their lives has experienced love, whether they were loved or have loved. Love appears to be the primary indispensable resource that we all strive for in our lifetime. There are many various sorts of love: family love, friendship love, conceptual love, etc. Many people have dif

The People and Culture of India

In this assignment I am going to be looking at the culture of India . I will be examining all the different ways that the people of India live, their dress, religion, things that are symbolic to them, what they like to eat, what they are proud of, the language and schools. I will look at their lifestyles in detail, and how the children of India are brought up from a young age. I have chosen this culture as I've always been quite interested in India, but have never looked into it in depth so would like to have a clearer understanding of the lifestyle, it would be a place where I hope to visit one day. I think the women in India look beautiful in their clothing, and the food of India is lovely. Being a vegetarian myself I find they cater very well for this, and I know the cow is very sacred in India but don't understand it enough if somebody were to question me. I will be aiming to teach foundation phase children age 5-6 in year one. I believe it is really important for children to be ab

History of the Lowell Mill Girls

America was changing and developing a strong economy through agriculture in the South and the West while the Northeast was moving towards an industrial revolution. Technology helped to speed agricultural growth and development with the invention of the cotton gin and the mechanical grain harvester (Tindall & Shi 2010). But, it also changed the economic foundation of America with factories. Technology changed not only how people lived but also how they worked. The factory system would have profound effects on the nineteenth century economic landscape, particularly in the Northeast (Tindall & Shi 2010). In 1822 the Merrimack Manufacturing Company in Lowell, Massachusetts invented a water powered plant that would bring spinning and weaving together in a factory setting. The city of Lowell began to grow and huge textile manufacturing companies were built and the economy was booming. The goal of the founders of the textile company was to establish mill communities that were family oriented and structured to accommo

The Internet and Political Participation

Lately technology has become one of the important aspects of life, especially the Internet. It also has many effects in political involvement throughout the nation. Some say Internet and technology impacted the society in negative way, but on the other hand quite a people agreed that it has positive affects. Aim of this paper is to discover what kinds of impacts Internet has on how we process political information, and does it have positive or negative affects on government participation. Personally I do agree that technology has huge affects positively on how we get involved into politics and government. Even though great portion of American population lost their beliefs in political-efficacy, but with Internet it is definitely increasing. Another positive effect of Internet is that it decreases the cost of participation. For example it saves time, because people wouldn't have to show up on election places physically. With technology government participation is only few clicks away.

The Art of Graffiti

Perhaps, a reason why Philadelphia stands out among other large metropolitan American cities is may be due to its bright color-filled and vibrant neighborhoods. It is a common understanding that the seeds of graffiti were originally rooted in Philadelphia since the city houses more murals than any other American city. Initially during its germinating stages, street graffiti was a major concern for the city since street gangs used as their weapon to mark their territory, and certain political factions sought it as a medium to broadcast propaganda to the public with minimum cost involvement. The presence of these intimidating graffiti only helped to convey to the public the presence of anarchy in the area. Graffiti at times contains writings or signs that may not signify any particular meaning to every individual and thus, was seen as an act of vandalism that degraded the value of a particular place. The word "graffiti" connotes to art which is defined as expression or application of cr

Romantic Lines in Early Spring by Wordsworth

Wordsworth was a great literary figure of the Romantic period. The Romantic Movement began in the eighteenth century against the neoclassical society during an age of revolution. The concept of tradition was abandoned and in its place a deeper appreciation for nature, emotion and the individual became the central to Romantics. The romantic idea is demonstrated throughout the poem through its subject matter, structure and literary devices. This poem fits perfectly into Romanticism as Wordsworth has rejected the classical poetry and placed the importance of true emotion above of society and intellect. Wordsworth's 'Lines written in early spring' is a comparison of the imperfection of mankind to the beauty of nature, instantly creating a romantic impression. Furthermore, the romantic concept can be indicated from 'early spring', as immediately we are with nature and spring you associate with new beginnings; extremely relevant to the revolutionary concept. The poem is a lyrical ba
