Fast Food in AmericaThe introduction of fast food has affected many societies in positive and negative ways. Its innovation prolonged these effects and may be worse to certain societies from a health and social standpoint. Due to the increase in popularity of the fast food norm, obesity percentages have risen, along with other health-related illness and over all activity in the daily life of an American. Fast food has negatively impacted obesity in America, as well as the average American's health habits, and has increased the count of numerous health issues, creating a great threat to the population. When fast food was first introduced in the early 1900s, people were amazed at the great quality being given in such a quick amount of time. As years passed, the craze of fast food continually increased within the world population. People began to eat it without any question. In Eric Schlosser's book, Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal, he states, "Hundreds of millions of people buy fast food every day without giving it much thought, unaware of the subtle and not so subtle ramifications of their purchases. Personal Experience - A Good Group of FriendsMontaigne says that friends should only spend time with each other because they give themselves entirely to one another. He says that true friends should not need anymore friends because they only need eachothers company. But I think that that is not true. I believe that you can have a million true friends, as long as each and every one of those friends pushes you to be the best you can be, and expands your horizons of thinking and how you look at the world. When looking at whom I surround myself with here at Bard, I like to believe I have a group of good friends around whom I can be myself. Friends can deceive and hurt you, but they also have the capacity to bring out the best in you and make you think in ways you never have before. When realizing who are your friends (and who are not) you must think of who puts you in bad situations. If your friends are constantly placing you in environments you are not comfortable in, it may be time to rethink your group. I am a strong believer i |

Opposition to the Death PenaltyThere has been some form of death penalty in the world throughout history. It is still legal in many countries as a punishment for major crimes. Executions have been performed by decapitation, electrocution, firing squad, gas chamber, hanging, lethal injection, shooting and stoning and other rude ways. Oscar Wilde's long poem,"The Ballad of Reading Gaol," is an example of a death sentence, hanging, and describes us how brutal the punishment is. With this historical example we can easily say that nobody has the exact right to give a death penalty order because it is applied unfairly, retribution of homicide is immoral, and there is a risk to execute innocent people. The death penalty decision is changed by different factors, for example, the judge's moral values, the attorney's quality skills, the country in which the crime is committed and the race of the victim or suspect. Most of the suspects charged with death penalty are poor ones who cannot afford a reputable attorney. Their inex |

Final Reflection on Wellness ClassBefore taking Wellness, I just thought of health as being without a disease or injury. I used to think it was all about your physical being but now that the wellness class is over, I believe health is an ongoing process of maintaining a balanced mind-body-spirit by promotion, restoration, and prevention. I now see health as a holistic term that takes into account each part of life. In other words, health is trying to find a balance in intellect and emotions, physical body well-being, and a spiritual peace. For example, I fell in love with running because it keeps up my physical health, gives me a spiritual peace by relieving stress, and allows me clear my mind when my emotions are raging in me. Before this semester, it never occurred to me how different wellness, illness, and health are from each other. Wellness I believe is being at your optimal health, meaning successfully reaching the balance of mind-body-spirit and illness I believe is any pain or emotion that may be ailing one's h |

Social Influence and PsychopathologyTwo substantive areas of psychology are social influence and psychopathology. The more recognized area in psychological studies is social influence. Social influence is action, reaction, thoughts, feelings, attitude or behavior that result from interaction with another individual or a group and is the study of conformity and obedience. Psychopathological disorder is schizophrenia, it is a mental illness that makes it difficult for an individual to recognize what is real and what is unreal. Various theoretical causes of schizophrenia include biological explanations such as genetics and chemicals in the brain. German psychiatrist Emil Kraepelin was the first person to describe features of schizophrenia. People with schizophrenia may have problems with talking, remembering and how to behave in society. Schizophrenia is a serious illness and effects 1% of the population globally. It is known that this brain illness affects normal and intelligent people. Conformity is defined by David My |

Creating Capabilities by Martha NussbaumIn this philosophical work, Martha Nussbaum briefly explores issues on gender concerning gender suppression and inequality in religion as well as our overall society, its role in social justice, autonomy and sexual orientation. She describes the utilization of her very own list of "capabilities" in which she provides in an attempt to resolve these issues- or at the very least, come to a compromise with them. She proceeds with claims that state that these inequalities are induced by religion, culture, tradition and social constructs developed over the course of time. Although Nussbaum has accumulated a few amount of critics for her more feminist positions in regards to these subjects, Nussbaum also has a number of supporters who agree with a majority of, if not all, the points she makes that will be presented in this paper. First and foremost, the Capabilities Approach is described by Nussbaum as "a counter-theory to challenge . . . entrenched but misguided theories . . |

Concepts of Global MigrationPeople around the world are constantly on the move. There are several different reasons why, and they are categorized on the basis of their reasons for relocation. Several factors determine why people migrate across the globe. A few different categories can explain a majority of the causes of why people move. People are considered labor Migrants, displaced persons, or institutional migrants. These groups of people all have different yet equally significant reasons for moving. Their motives for moving are identified by the terms just listed. Some motives that these people can have are corresponding to current economic situation, political situation, and social situations. Migrations and its effects on people come in many forms. Both vary in terms of the distance involved, the purpose of the move, whether the move was forced or a matter of choice and the migrant's status in the new destination. Another important effect of migration is globalization and migration. They both have their ow |

A Well-Regulated MilitiaIn the twentieth of September 1789 the United States congress proposed ten amendments that were later ratified two years later. These amendments are known as the bill of right, which are rights that were created to protect and defend our individual rights and liberties. Of the amendments on the bill of right there is one that seems to constantly be undecided on what it actually means. The second amendment which reads, "A Well Regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." Many believe that the meaning of the second amendment is that anyone and everyone should be allowed to hold and possess as many guns as they please. While others feel that the second amendment only allows that a selected group under the command of their state be allowed to possess arms and only during times where the individual's life is in danger. What Saul Cornell introduces is the idea that the constitution's real |

White Noise's Place in Contemporary LiteratureIn the beginning of the term, Mr. Garfinkel informed us that in our first term senior English class we would be reading literature so contemporary and new that we would have to buy the books ourselves. Stuyvesant High School just could not afford to provide their over-achieving students (excluding me) with up-to-date novels. At first, this seemed like a rotten compromise. I certainly did not want to pay to read for English class, even if it was for modern books, but in the end I gave into Mr. Garfinkel's demands and bought all the required readings. I even read all of them because well if I paid for them, I thought I might as well actually read them. And it all turned out great because all of the books turned out to be very relatable and contemporary. I might even say I enjoyed reading them; money well spent. Indeed, Mr. Garfinkel kept his word about how this class would operate, that is until our final book White Noise. When we received Don DeLillo's White Noise, if pages falling ou |

American Airlines - Advertising PatriotismMany things in our culture of America conveys a sense of how the United States are the most superior country on earth. Many times this viewpoint is true. In America, companies often use commercials to influence people to go certain places, eat certain foods, and buy certain things. Most of the time they make it seem like the person's life will be so much better if they have and buy the thing that they are advertising. Most of the time this strategy works, so that is why they continue to use this technique in advertising. These kinds of advertisements are done through print, television commercials, internet, and billboards. American culture ideas are represented in the American Airlines commercial, that this essay will be analyzing. The commercial is advertising their new airline fleet, and how they have a, "new plane smell." It also has people looking at the planes like they are the most awesome things on the face of the earth. The new airplanes seem to look bigger than the old ones, |

Standard of Living in the History of Economic ThoughtIn the book, "History of Economic Thought," Harry Landreth and David Colander argue the most important factors when considering a country's wealth. They argue to Smith, that increasing productivity of labor, specifically through specialization and division of labor, following by innovation, and capital accumulation, are the most important factors. The more we produce, the wealthier the nation is; ensuring a rise in the standard of living. If we increase the productivity, there is more output, the unit cost of production decreases, and prices decrease. Therefore, due to dropping prices, citizens are able and wiling to purchase more products. This assumes that their income remains the same, making the material standard of living increase. Some skeptics might argue that with high productivity, producers do not need many workers, increasing unemployment. Neve |

The Music of My LifeIt all started on my papaws farm on a warm Georgia summer night. There I heard that song echoing through the trees, coming from the dusty windows of that pickup truck. I heard the song family tradition by Hank Williams Jr. That song set the basis for all the music that I enjoy in the following years. I obviously didn't realize that this was happening, but over the years I noticed much of the music I like has similar qualities. After hearing family tradition, I was instantly hooked. Country music quickly became my favorite genre of music at the time. I loved the slow beat and the lyrics that portray a better, simpler time in the south. The country way of life portrayed in the old style country music is that of one that I live out in the country with no one around, that music is one that's calming and relaxing. I loved the sound of a guitar strumming and listening to some Garth Brooks while out fishing. Growing up on a farm probably had a huge influence on the type of music I enjoyed bec |

Negative Effects of Video GamesOn average most people spend their free time doing extracurricular activities like sports, some spend their free time playing video games instead. The amount of time one spends playing video games, looking at the television screen or on the laptop may affect someone either positively or negatively. People may not notice the effects of video games due to the mentality that it's just a game but the short-term effects my yield long-term effects later on. There are pros and cons of playing video games; for the most part the cons out-weigh the pros. Though there might be a slight bit of positive outcome, through research and my own personal experience, I stand for the fact that video games affect people negatively through behavioral interactions, time efficiency, addiction and parental misguidance. Video games affect the behavioral social interaction of people. Even though video games might bring about the union of friends to play a certain game and have fun, the negative effect it brings |

Teens and DepressionThe National Institute for Mental Health states that 1.8 million teens under the age of 18 suffer from depression. However, due to the stigma surrounding mental illness in our society, many people often overlook symptoms and disregard it as awkward teenage years. The truth is teens are one of the most at risk for developing depression and other mental illnesses. Our society is just recently developing a better understanding of this illness as it presents in younger generations, and how to treat and manage it. In order to provide complete help for those suffering from depression and other mental illnesses, our society needs to work towards more understanding and compassion for teens affected. Depression though often perceived as a mood state; is actually a medical illness. Those suffering from depression are often impaired in |

Concert Report of Music AppreciationThe concert was performance by Katelyn Bouska, a doctoral student at Temple University, who is an active solo and collaborative performer on both historical and modern keyboard instruments. She played keyboard pieces from 20th century for this concert. The first one piece was 1.X. 1905, a two-movement piano sonata composed by Leoš Janáček. The two movements in this sonata are: Foreboding (Předtucha) – Con moto and Death (Smrt) – Adagio. The music's plain melody is typical 20th, with echoes of the impressionists colored with a certain amount of Slavic broodiness. The next piece was Puppets (Loutky), Book I H.137 composed by Bohuslav Martinu. The performer talked about the wordplay in the titling of this piece, which I did not quite get due to my lack of foreign language knowledge. The distinct contrast of rhythm between different parts are the most impressive to me. To be honest, after the performer finished all five parts of the second piece, I left the concert. |

Use and Abuse of Psychedelic DrugsIn the article "the use and abuse of psychedelic drugs" Daniel X. Freedman describes the effects of psychedelic drugs such as lsd, acid, and shrooms. He also explains how it impacts the brain of the user. For example long term psychoses and ranges of confusional states and depression. Then to go on and explain how psychedelic drugs can affect your behavior. He then goes into explain the possible abuse of the drug and how it works. Though in this article he explains the harmful effects of psychedelic drugs he does explain the value of them. All though these drugs can have a bad effect on the brain and can be abused they have good effects like for example aesthetic appreciation. Freedman also explores why or what are people's motives to doing psychedelic drugs. Although Freedman does inform us that psychedelic drugs can have harmful effects, his overall point is that you should be knowledgeable about psychedelic drugs to then appreciate psychedelic trips. A World Beyond SafeHow can we have a safe world when people started favoring security over freedom? Thomas Jefferson once said, "A person who chooses security over freedom deserves neither." People are choosing to have surveillance and weapons to defend themselves from upcoming attacks that may or may not occur, rather than enjoying their freedom and rights. The definition of peace, freedom and the end of war, is starting to fade because countries are racing to build weapons. Even people achieve their goal by violence. Is that a safe world? Imagine a world with no weapons nor violence, is that a stable world? Nuclear weapons are an explosive device that gains its power from nuclear energy, the splitting and combining of atomic nuclei. 53 years of dejection and sill countries like United States of America, India, Pakistan, France, United Kingdom, China, and North Korea are working to produce weapons of mass destruction. The United States wanted to build the first nuclear bomb in World War II, |

Economic Priorities in the UkraineI think there is no doubt that Ukraine can be as economically developed as, for instance, France or the Baltic countries. Our country is based in Eastern Europe and washed by the Black Sea and The Sea of Azov. It means that it can have easy connection with many different countries via the sea routes. Furthermore, Ukraine has the temperate climate and very fertile lands. I do believe that my country can provide food for all Ukrainians and also ''feed up'' a few neighboring countries. Despite this fact, nowadays the situation is quite different - Ukraine has to buy the food, technological divides, various materials, and ask seek very expensive loans from the European Union and other international organizations. Why is it so and how can it be changed? This question is extremely topical for all Ukrainians now |

Scenes in Animal FarmQuestion #1 I think that the most memorable and effective scene was when Napoleon called in his nine dogs to attack Snowball during their last debate together about the windmill. This is a key turning point in the book, because this scene shows Napoleon's first move towards his new government of the farm, which is communism. This action eradicates Snowball from his position of leadership, and gives Napoleon sole leadership of the farm. Snowball is then shown as a traitor, a liar, and a thief. He is blamed when things go wrong. The reason this part is effective and memorable is because it's a key point in the book, and the rest of the book is shaped by it. The animals still follow Napoleon because he says that Mr. Jones will come back if they don't listen to everything he says. The animals hate Mr. Jones, so they will do anything so he doesn't come back to rule over them. Napoleon tells the animals that it was recently discovered that Snowball was working for Mr. Jones. Ethics in the Food IndustryMy family likes to buy rotisserie chicken which we usually find priced at $3.99. It's cheap, it's convenient, and it's delicious. Some of our best bonding moments and family conversations were at the dinner table when eating rotisserie chicken, and now that I am in college, it reminds of the times when the whole family socialized at the dinner table. Although, we never really thought about the implications of buying the chicken - we always just saw it as an abundant option whenever we went to our local Albertsons. However, before getting there the chicken had a gruesome life story. Webster regards the industrial chicken production as, "in magnitude and severity, the most severe systematic example of man's inhumanity to another sentient animal" (Singer 24). This doesn't even begin to describe the brutality of the chicken production. The egg-hatching chickens are kept throughout their lives in extremely confined spaces (an area of an 8" by 11" piece of paper) where t |

A Rape of the Lock by Alexander Pope"The Rape of Lock" by Alexander Pope is the most perfect example of mock-epic genre. The poem functions as a satire on interesting facts of fashionable life. The Rape of the Lock was written because of a brawl between two Roman Catholic families, the Fermors, and the Petres caused by an irrelevant incident: (when the Baron cuts off a lock of Belinda's hair). The main protagonist is Belinda and she acts as an epic hero. Pope's way of satirizing the fashionable society and its non-serious values is represented in the style of an epic poem, through the use of familiar epic devices. In the beginning of the poem, the author prays and invokes the muse to prove him and to tell him about the subject and to tell him about a hero called Belinda. The author does not invoke God, but his friend John Caryll. By invocation, he wants to know why the Lord offenses a lady and why the lady rejects him. The plot of the poem begins with a beginning of a day. The sun is rising, but Belinda is still sleeping. The next scene presents the supernatural figures like Sylphs, Gnomes, etc. One of them Ariel represents someone who talks as a hero and someone who offers prot |

The Guantanamo Bay Detention CampA liquid food substance is forced down a feeding tube placed inside the respiratory system of an innocent man. This man is one of the 15 detainees who participated in the hunger strike of early 2013 in the Guantanamo Bay Detention Camp. At this international prison, detainees are stripped everyday of their basic human rights, and human beings worldwide are clueless as to what is occurring at the prison. In order to spread awareness, I will be discussing the background, United Nations interactions, and past solutions of this on-going conflict. First, the background of the prison - Guantanamo Bay Detention Camp was first established in 2002. Throughout episodes of conflict and tension between international parties, the prison inmates at Guantanamo Bay have reported torture and abusive treatment, according to Irene Khan of Huffington Post. In response to unjust treatment, prison inmates have retaliated through starvation. The retaliation made by detainees would only backfire; these hunger strikes would lead to the ongoing forced feeding punishment done by Pentagon officials running Guantanamo Bay. |
