The American Court System

1) Courts play an essential role within the Criminal Justice system here in America. Many fail to realize how these courts work or how they function. Looking even further, another question that is posed when examining the realm of American Courts is what contributes to the well being of courts. Many people would be quick to think that it's money that mainly contributes to the operation of these institutions. Cassia Sophn and her colleagues have brought up a legitimate topic of discussion when suggesting that conflict is the wellspring of the modern court. Conflict between citizens and conflict between agencies contribute to the courts in multiple different ways. One of the first ways that conflicts contribute to the courts is the way that the need for a formal court system. As Cassa Sophn suggests, a formal court system was spawned through development of a formal legal system. The functioning of the criminal justice system would not function smoothly without a court system. Accordin

Gillman and Hurston and the Treatment of Women

Charlotte Perkins Gilman and Zora Neale Hurston both write about the foul treatment of women in their marriages during the Victorian Era in the 1890's and during the Harlem Renaissance in the 1920's. The narrator, or the wife, in "The Yellow Wall-Paper," undergoes The Rest Cure recommended by her husband and is slowly reduced to an infant-like state of mind. In "The Gilded-Six Bits," a young newlywed African-American couple, Missie May and Joe, live in Chicago. Joe shows glimpses of some unfavorable treatment toward Missie. At one point, Missie May betrays Joe and sleeps with another man, but Joe never lets her forget it. Due to the time periods these two women were in, they had nowhere to go and were trapped. Women could not own a house let alone land a job in these times. Women have been subject to unfair treatment by men not only over 100 years ago, but are still treated unfairly today. In "The Yellow Wall-Paper," Gilman tells the story of a woman's d

Literary Commentary on a Work by John Tobias

The poet, John Tobias, explores the tension between a highly blissful and idealized childhood and the harsh realities of a far more corrupt present in the poem 'Reflections on a Gift of Watermelon Pickles Received From a Friend Called Felicity.' Alongside the character's loss of innocence, other supporting themes are present, such as drug abuse, the passage of time, and violence. Through immensely detailed description in imagery of the author's childhood memories and present day, we witness the personal growth and nostalgic recollection of memories of a character. Tobias builds the foundations of the reader's understanding within the strikingly interesting and equally as strange title given to the poem. What seems to make the poem so alluring is that the title is ridiculously long and that it humorously introduces the poem as a "reflection on a gift of watermelon pickle." The reader is instantly thrown off at first read of this title and is therefore inclined to conti

Teaching Shakespeare in the 21st Century

Research and Critical Reflection In 2010, OFSTED produced a report about creative approaches to teaching and learning with a focus on raising standards. They visited 44 schools, 19 of which were secondary schools that had received good or outstanding from their most recent inspection. Where creative approaches to teaching and learning had the biggest impact and the greatest improvements shown was in schools that were considered to be in challenging circumstances: "(schools) with a higher than average proportion of pupils eligible for free schools meals, low attainment on entry and high rates of pupil mobility ̶ showed the greatest improvements in: pupils' ability to draw discerningly on a range of data and work collaboratively to solve problems; their reading and writing; their speaking and listening; and their personal development." (Ofsted, 2010) This report contained a case-study where students in one of the schools studied Macbeth and not only performed the play to an

Private and Public Insurance for Children

Introduction Shaefer et al. addresses the reason families shift their children from private to public insurance, while taking into account the concept of crowd-out by examining the transition of children from private to public health insurance in the wake of establishment of public programs that provide coverage to the uninsured alongside the continued offering of private health insurance. He identifies such programs as the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) and using the Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP), a nationally representative household survey, identifies children who moved from private to public coverage and compares them to those who remain on private insurance and to all other children (Shaefer et al., 2011, p 359). The Concept of Crowd-Out The concept of crowd-out refers to the extent to which the expansi

Biography of Booker T. Washington

Booker T. Washington was born in Virginia in 1856. Even though he was born into slavery, he received a teaching degree from a freedman's school in Hampton, Virginia. In 1881 he founded what is now known as Tuskegee University. Booker T. Washington's major focus was to educate African Americans in agriculture and carpentry. Washington believed that once African Americans gained economic status, racism would subside. Washington also believed that African Americans needed to be patient and that they needed to accept the fact that African American people would be subjected to racism. Booker T. Washington was also the first African American man to be invited to the White House by Theodore Roosevelt. Booker T. Washington is attributed to saying, "more and more, we must

Complex Concepts of Digital Media

Introduction "Speed of Sound" is a song by British alternative rock band Coldplay. It was written by all members of the band for their third album, X&Y. Built around a piano riff, the song builds into a huge, synthesizer chorus. It was released on 23 May 2005 by Parlophone Records as the lead single from the album. "Clarity" is a song by German/Russian electronic dance music producer Zedd. It features vocals from British singer Foxes. The song was written by Zedd, Matthew Koma, Porter Robinson and Skylar Grey and was released on October 2, 2012. Assessment Task One Songs are created using complex tools and techniques. All songs have each of the instruments and vocals recorded on a different track. They are then 'mixed' together to produce the final song. 'Mixing' is when all the individual tracks of a song are blended together to get the best possible sound. For example, both 'Speed of sound' and 'Clarity' by Coldplay and Zedd respectively would have had each

Love - Illusion or Reality?

"Love can sometimes be magic. But magic can sometimes... just be an illusion," Javan. One of the biggest questions lying at the root of human curiosity is whether love is real or merely an illusion. In our day-to-day lives, it can be very difficult to draw the line between the two, because our mind alters everything we perceive. Some believe reality is that love conquers all, while others believe it brings nothing but destruction. Is it impossible to have two completely opposing realities in an actual existence? If so, doesn't this make it all an illusion? This essay will analyse character, symbolism and societal settings in the texts, 'Slumdog Millionaire' by Danny Boyle, 'The Great Gatsby' by F. Scott Fitzgerald, 'Both Sides Now' by Joni Mitchell and 'To Kill A Mockingbird' by Harper Lee, in an attempt to bring us closer to answering that seemingly unanswerable question - what really is love? In Slumdog Millionaire, love certainly conquers all. Ja

Tsar Alexander II and Emancipation of the Serfs

There were many reasons for the tsar deciding to emancipate the serfs, like his uncle Tsar Alexander I had tried to do in the past. Russia used to be one of the greatest powers in Europe, but due to her lack of reform she was falling far behind many of her western counterparts and Tsar Alexander believed that emancipation, along with other reforms, could help to make Russia a great power once again. Alexander emancipated the serfs for many reasons, but his own upbringing and liberal influences was one of the most important. He had gained many of his views from his tutor, zhukovsky, who was a well-known liberal poet. He continued to gain support from some ministers such as General Dimitri Milyutin. This influence from a young age had helped to give him the view that serfdom was an o

A Comparison Between Mythology and a Western Film

There are many traits that a hero has. People define a hero by their actions and what they have done to help society. In mythology a hero might slay large numbers of their enemies on the battlefield, they may kill monsters and save damsels in distress, or even save a city from total disaster. Although some of these traits may have stayed the same or kept a similar shape, not all are still used when applied to modern day films. In the movie Star Wars, Luke's expedition reinforces the idea of a hero. The journey he travels shapes him into a hero under the guidelines of a Western Film. There are many characters who loosely fit into these guidelines as well. Their adventures throughout the movie can be compared to heroic adventures of classical mythological beings. In mythology, a hero's journey begins with a call to adventure. This is the first incident on a dangerous path that separates the hero from his or her home and family. Often, the hero does not recognize the hand of fate at wo

Ken Kesey in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

Despite having to overcome adversity in his life, Ken Kesey spoke upon the bitter truth of society within his writing and influenced many American authors. Kesey described his childhood as ordinary, spending numerous hours with the people dear to him. Kesey wrote multiple screenplays and 44 books, not many of the books or screenplays became exuberantly popular; however, one emerged from the shadows. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, one of the greatest works of American literature, catalyzed Ken Kesey's career and fame. He wrote the book while working in an insane asylum and regularly consuming drugs, which played a major role in his life and his writing, often leading him into numerous predicaments with the government. Despite being heavily affected by excessive use of drugs, he somehow came up with one of the greatest pieces of writing of all time. He struggled during the final years of his lifetime, yet he persistently kept a smile on his face until the day he passed away. His journe

Intelligence and IQ Testing

Traditional intelligence tests have different scales and measure different cognitive abilities or skills. In reading this article I feel that nonverbal tests have been considered pure measures of general intelligence and are excellent indicators of abstract reasoning, particularly in the visual-spatial domain. According to the authors of this article it was written to familiarize clinicians and investigators with the variety of nonverbal IQ measures currently available. I believe that it is important that clinicians as well as investigators are aware of the methods and treatments that are available to help measure a client's or students IQ. This article was also written to highlight some of the important differences among them while providing recommendations for the selection and interpretation of nonverbal IQ measures. According to the article one measure of distinction is whether the interest considered is verbal or nonverbal. Developed during World War I, the nonverbal IQ measure w

The Power of Empathy

The power of empathy is very strong in its ability to help us understand others. Not only does it help us understand others, but it also helps us build connections between one another. While everybody is unique in many different ways, we also all have many similarities. One type of similarity is our experiences. Experiencing a situation similar to someone else helps us better understand them, and with that gives us the ability to empathize with their situations. Empathy is a very strong way to connect with someone because they know that the other really can understand their situation whereas someone who sympathizes is really just trying to be kind but cannot fully understand. Not to say that sympathy is wrong, but it does not build connections with others in the same fashion that empathy does. Sometimes it is difficult to empathize with some people on certain things. For example, the book Night by Elie Wiesel is a novel where Wiesel recalls his time during the Holocaust. There are a

Stress - The Silent Killer

Stress is a very common problem being faced today. Actually, it is not a new phenomenon; it has been experienced throughout history. But some researches show us that rate of stress is increasing day by day. Our hectic lifestyle or our responsibilities push us being stressful. Stress can result in the competitiveness needed to success in business, achieve an education, foster social relationships, and win at sports. Since everyone wants to be number one or perfect when they fail at something, they feel under stress. In addition, concerns, fears, despair, busy lifestyle, ambition, and problems lead to stress. Even if people who are under stress go to bed for sleep, they cannot sleep because they constantly think about problems about their life. And also, they cannot focus on their work efficiently because of feeling under stress. So, we are affected by physically and mentally. Stress is the mother of all issues as it gives to birth the many other issues like overeating, overweight, psych

Teenagers and Birth Control

Every year, more than 900,000 teenagers are pregnant. More than 80% of them are not intentional pregnancies and almost of them half seek to either get rid of the baby by their own means or abortion. Many of these teenagers actually happen to come from either an offensive, dysfunctional or a single mother or father families. Parents, law enforcement, health facilities, and other government type agencies like the C.D.C, have a tendency of unintentionally pushing those young female teenagers to fleeing, attempting suicide, or even illegal and risky abortion because of how much they stress on the consequences of teenage pregnancies. The idea of birth control pills is usually never presented to those teenage girls. As a matter of fact, some political figures like Cory Gardner who is a GOP Senate candidate want to ban birth control. Birth control may decrease the amount of unplanned pregnancies sure, but, of course we as a community need to stress about the cons of early sexual activity, nevertheless, what is to stop a sixteen year old girl from losing her virginity to a boy that has consumed her wo

Loneliness, Walls and Bridges

Question What do you think about the statement that people are lonely because they build walls instead of bridges? Is one's character a decisive factor? Response I absolutely agree with this statement. In most cases there's nobody but you to be accused of your own loneliness. In general, such people don't find anything better than to complain about their lonely life. The only thing that separates sociable, popular people from those who feel lonely is that the latter lack initiative and action. If a person stands quietly in his corner, there's very little probability that somebody will come up to him and begin communication. If a person is lonely, first of all, he or she should think not about what's wrong with other people as they don't communicate with him, but about what's wrong with him and what he has to change in his attitude to life in order to become popular. The Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Samuel Coleridge

Samuel Coleridge's The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is a poem in which an "ancient mariner" accosts one of three men on their way to a wedding, and recounts a tale of his voyage to him. In the tale, the mariner kills an albatross and, by this crime, is subject to a slew of punishments which come in the form of many supernatural phenomena. Upon witnessing such phenomena, the mariner comes away from the experience with a newly-found sense of appreciation for nature. At face value, the mariner's story seems like utter nonsense, but upon close reading, it becomes apparent that through the mariner's lengthy exposition, Coleridge intends to communicate a certain moral outlook on life in general, as well as his show his concern for slavery, through the use of imagery, descriptions of the supernatural, and references to God. One important aspect of this poem to consider before analyzing its deeper contents is its narrative structure. There are essentially three characters: an omnipre

Bronte's Portrayal of Death - Wuthering Heights

As a piece of gothic literature, death is invariably one of the primary aspects of 'Wuthering Heights' by Emily Bronte. Having come into contact with loss and grief from a young age – Bronte herself grew up in a motherless household and lost her two eldest sisters to sickness – her portrayal is somewhat unconventional in the spectrum of ways in which her characters internalize grief, but is nonetheless reflective of our own unspoken curiosities of death as well as life thereafter. Throughout the given passage, Bronte's elaborate use of narration and structure to convey hero own unorthodox ideologies forces the reader to ponder their own beliefs. Certainly, in this sense Bronte's portrayal of death is the main appeal of 'Wuthering Heights'. From the chapter's inception, Bronte effectively employs Nelly's narration to communicate her own ideas surrounding death. Known to defy Christianity in its traditional form, Nelly's account of events: 'About twelve o'c

A Jury of Her Peers by Susan Glaspell

The North American writer Susan Glaspell, in her short story "A Jury of Her Peers", tells about the female characters' situation involved in the resolution of John Wright's death, John is the husband of one of the female characters in the story. Even though the female characters are able to solve the mystery of John's death, they live under the patriarchal society rules. The story by Glaspell can be seemed as one feminist piece of literature. The story content exposes the inferior role of woman in society in comparison to men´s role. In her short story "A Jury of Her Peers", Susan Glaspell exposes how women are treated in a patriarchal society through men´s actions. The first men´s action to expose the patriarchalism in society is the diminution of women's image and personality through sarcastic expressions. For example, a female character is judged and criticized because of her look according to her husband's position of sheriff. Apparently, a woman must compl
