Kiera Knightly and the Two Elizabeths

Starring in over a dozen movies, Keira Knightly had two of her best roles when she starred in "Pirates of the Caribbean" and "Pride and Prejudice." For the famous actress, going from a pirate scene to an English scene in the 1800's was just a walk in the park. Elizabeth Swann, the star of "Pirates of the Caribbean," and Elizabeth Bennett, the star of "Pride and Prejudice," have many similarities, but are also noted for their refreshing differences. The two women are similar in the fact that they are both beautiful, strong women. However, when most people compare the roles of Keira Knightly in Pirates of the Caribbean and Pride and Prejudice, they do not realize the major differences of both story-lines. These differences range from differences with things such as family backgrounds, the love life, and the action in each film. The family backgrounds of both characters differ immensely. Elizabeth Swann was the daughter of Governor Weatherby Swann; she grew up in a giant mansion with just her father. They were considered upper classed an

The Somme: Heroism and Horror in the First World War

In "The Some: Heroism and Horror in the First World War," Martin Gilbert presents a rather unique study of one of the bloodiest battles ever fought. The Somme is a different battle to write about in that there was so much lost, while neither side was able to gain from it. Even though the battle of the Somme is possibly the bloodiest conflict in history, there is no one to proclaim as the hero that saved the day. Over one million men were lost during the 148 day conflict to either death or injury. Gilbert did a rather clever thing in creating this book, when he managed to capture the spirit of the battle of the Somme. He has written a respectful, absorbing account of the men who fought and those who lost their lives. The book presents a first hand narrative of the battle from an individual perspective. It does not present a play by play review of the battle but instead focuses on a much deeper personal perspective of the conflict. Retold from the survivors' first hand accounts, and letters from both survivors and those that died, it gives an accounting of the true wastefulness of the war. At a death rate of ov

Analysis of a Trial - HAAS Automation

Paul Whalen was an entrepreneur, working in the semi-conductor business; holding patents in the semi-conductor industry as well as patents for the wind-up radio and a safety shut-off valve for pressurized gas tanks. In the late 1990's, he and his wife Andrea, decided to start up their own automation company in San Jose. Whalen had patented the technology for a robotic system that could transport silicon wafers from a storage room to a "clean room", limiting the amount of particles that would get on the silicon wafer. His technology was designed to be built with "off the shelf" parts, savings many thousands of dollars. Somewhere around 2003, Paul and HAAS Automation developed a Joint Venture to mass-produce the retical stocker and robotic clean room. Paul had found investors, and collected $3.3 million. Within 9 months, Paul and Andrea (the CEO and CFO of the company – Intrabay) burned through the ENTIRE $3.3 million. After a couple of years of no significant sales or production of the product, and no other source of funding or invest

Karl Marx and The Communist Manifesto

In 1848, Karl Marx wrote "The Communist Manifesto," a ground-breaking series of ideas that, once implemented, would change the lives of millions of people for generations. In the text, Marx emphasized the importance of ongoing class struggles and their historical consequences. Marx believed that human history was largely defined by the animosity between the working class and the governing class, with the latter in control of providing for the lower classes. He divided the classes into what he labeled the bourgeois and the proletarians. According to Marx, the bourgeois were direct descendants of a primitive society that had "not done away with class antagonisms." He also explained that the discovery of America assisted in the drive and rise of the bourgeois class. The most important factor in the rise of the ruling class resulted from a "series of revolutions in the modes of production and of exchange." The proletariat, were considered a byproduct of the bourgeois. Marx considered the proletariat to be slaves of the bourgeois and the bourgeois state. However, Marx pointe

Immigrants to America - Success and Failure

The large inflow of Latinos, combined with growth in the U.S. native-born Hispanic population, have considerably altered the demographic structure of the country in this last century. The 2010 Census accounted for more than half of the nation's population growth in the previous decade. In those 10 years, the U.S. Hispanic population surged 43 percent to reach 50.5 million. In this nation, Hispanics make up nearly 17 percent of the populace, and at this time we have 11 million undocumented illegal immigrants in America. Representative Steve King says it's not good to build our immigration system because it will cause these citizens to vote. He states the only motive to reform this system it to pick up the greater percentage of Hispanic vote. He goes on the further state, "If you legalize people that are here illegally that mea

The Effects of Spanking Children

Abstract Disciplining children by means of spanking is a controversial subject. Researchers on one side of the debate believe spanking is a necessary part of raising a well-behaved child; their opinion is based on the belief that spanking is effective, claiming that children who are spanked behave better than those who aren't spanked. On the other side, it's proven that spanking a child can be harmful both physically and emotionally, leading to increased aggressiveness, antisocial behaviors and delinquency. These aspects have been some of the factors supporting each clause. The finding in the paper will look at the importance of both arguments collectively. However based on findings, there are factors that still need to be considered on actually causation. The Effects of Spanking Children For the past 37 years, there have been some debates between negative effects and positive effects related to spanking of children (Straus, 2001). Throughout the years there were claims of positive c

Rhetorical Analysis of What You Eat Is Your Business

Dear Editor, After analyzing Radley Balko's article, "What You Eat Is Your Business," I would like to give my explanation of why this article should be posted in the next edition of "The Shorthorn." Considering the rhetorical appeals of Balko's article, I believe that most readers of "The Shorthorn" would be interested in things that could potentially affect their health and lifestyle. When it comes to the topic of obesity, nearly all members of the UTA community will readily agree that something has to be done for ending this crisis and bettering the health of their country's people. In his article, Radley Balko's central claim is that the government should foster personal responsibility and it is up to the individuals to become fit and make the right food choices on their own. He opines that obesity is not an issue of public health. "What You Eat Is Your Business" provides sufficient reasons and evidence to support the argument that Balko states in his article. Obesity is a hot top

Imagery and Metaphor in George Herbert's The Flower

George Herbert's poem, "The Flower" (1633), utilizes nature as both an image and metaphor to explain man's relationship to God. Herbert is generally considered a metaphysical poet, a movement characterized by the common use of metaphor and subtlety and whose subject matter was principally: life, love, and religion. Herbert's "The Flower", and the metaphorical comparison it employs, embodies this movement; superficially it is a pleasant poem about nature but the subtext, and its true meaning, is much more profound. It is through this veil of pleasant imagery and seemingly light substance that "The Flower" is able to interject its powerful message. The poem begins, strangely enough, from the perspective of a flower. While initially this may be seen as an unorthodox approach to writing about God but it is actually this bizarre method that makes this poem effective. Imagine a poem, perhaps written by a monk hoping to pay tribute to his God; most likely it wou

The Warmth of Other Suns by Isabella Wilkerson

"The Warmth of Other Suns," by Isabella Wilkerson tells the story of the movement of over six million African American men and women from the southern states to northern states during the era known as the Great Migration. Wilkerson, who is a product of this journey herself, wrote The Warmth of Other Suns not only to inform but to humanize the Great Migration. She interviewed over 1,200 people and dedicated over fifteen years of research to tell the epic story of the movement of an entire people. Wilkerson focused the book on three characters, Ida Mae Brandon Gladney, George Swanson Starling, and Robert Joseph Pershing Foster. She chose these characters because each represented on of the three major streams of the Great Migration, the East coast, the Midwest and the West coast. They each had a different story to tell; they each came from a different decade, and people could identify with their stories. If I had the pleasure of meeting Isabel Wilkerson, I would like to know why she

Transformational Leadership

Transformational leaders have a vision and an ability to inspire others. A Treatise of Human Nature by David Hume

David Hume is considered one of the greatest Western philosophers to ever live and was one of the most influential of the British empiricists. Perhaps Hume's biggest contributions to philosophy come from his first book "A Treatise of Human Nature". In the book, Hume introduces some of his most revolutionary and groundbreaking theories, and these theories help him define and explain how the human brain works. In a "Treatise of Human Nature," Hume states that all complex ideas come from simpler ones, and these simple ideas are formed from impressions we receive through our senses. As a result, our ideas and experiences are not so different from those of others. Hume continues to explain that every idea we have can be traced back to a personal experience. The emphasis on experience shows that Hume is a true empiricist by putting such a strong emphasis on the senses. In Hume's first work he comes up with three tools that help explain his theories, these tools include t

Issues of Prison Overcrowding

Missouri's state prisons are overcrowded and the State Supreme Court has ordered the state to remedy this problem. Missouri passed a pair of reforms this session. The ACLU has worked for several years to lay the groundwork for a sizable reform that would reduce the disparity of sentences for crack and powder cocaine offenses. The law signed will now reduce the disparity for comparable offenses. Gov. Jay Nixon decided to sign house bill 1525, which would send fewer people to prison for technical violations of probation and parole, which has missed meeting or failed drug test. (www.aclu.org) House Bill 1525, which Gov. Jay Nixon signed into law July 6, establishes strategies for dropping parole and probation for certain offenses by requiring the division of corrections to award earned good behavior. Now although the new bill shall bring some great aspects towards prison overcrowding, there are in fact some negative aspects as well. Overall though, I honestly think that we as a society sha

Children of Addicts

Billie Holiday once said, "In this country, don't forget, a habit (addiction) is no damn private hell. A habit is hell for those you love. And in this country, it's the worst kind of hell for those who love you." Although Holiday was not speaking directly about children, her words surely describe the effects that parents with addictions have on their children (Chandler). Studies show that these children are not only at greater risk of death because of neglect, but are also at risk of having their personalities negatively altered from the moment they are conceived (Bowles). Additionally, children of addicts are faced with physical and mental health problems throughout their lives. This problem is compounded in African American communities because of racial stereotypes, which portray the typical drug addict as a black junkie. This portrayal is used to rationalize targeting blacks for drug crimes and giving them disproportionate sentences compared to whites. This practice only perpetuat

Science Experiment: Turning Copper to Gold

Objective The objective is to convert a regular penny into a gold penny using alchemy. Introduction Alchemy is the medieval forerunner of chemistry, based on the supposed transformation of matter. For example, alchemists convinced people that they could turn cheap metals into gold by doing certain chemical reactions. However, the people would soon realize that these methods did not work. This lab will show how mixing certain metals to create an alloy, will make a penny appear gold. Materials - Penny - Burner - Tongs - Evaporating dish - Pipette - Zinc - NaOH - Water - Beaker Procedure Before the lab, all pennies were cleaned by the teacher. Enough zinc was put in an evaporating dish to cover the bottom. Three pipettes of NaOH were added to the dish and stirred with a popsicle stick. The burner was lighted with a match and the evaporating dish with the NaOH and the zinc was placed on th

Students Failing Class - Contributing Factors

Numerous studies have examined the factors and behaviors that contribute to students failing classes. Each study focuses on different factors that contribute to students failing. The most prevalent factor for students failing is cutting class. Students selectively choose the class they decide to cut for various reasons. In fact, Fallis, Kirk and Opotow (2003) concluded that some students cut class as a result of disengagement and alienation which is referred to as boredom. Cutting class is also called "skipping"" or "ditching" class, which is selective class attendance that occurs when a student comes to be present, present a paper or report or take an exam but fails to attend particular classes without a legitimate excuse"" (Fallis et al, 2003, p. 102). Studies have shown that when comparing the past to now, cutting was very rare for obedient students or chronic behavior for students labeled as "loafers " or "losers. " More students living in low income families navigate their day

Controversy and the Abortion Debate

Introduction One of the most controversial and complex political issues in American history is the issue of abortion. This endless fight over the woman's right over her body or the fetus's right to life has split the nation into two camps; pro-life and pro-choice. The abortion debate has become an unyielding battle as politicians have been forced to take a stand on this moral issue. Twenty-two years ago abortion was ruled a woman's legal right by the Supreme Court. It is backed by the nation's most prestigious civil groups, from the League of Woman Voters to the American Civil Liberty Union. On the other hand it is contested and fought by our country's leaders with the majority from the Catholic Church officials to the Bible belt of our nation. This is an issue that holds a heavy weight upon the heart of many and can destroy a campaign as well as the supporters for each side. The stand on abortion between the two major political powers of our nation seems just as unclear and deluded as
