Why Students Should Work Part-Time

When adults think of college students the first words that come to mind are lazy and unmotivated. Adults believe many students spend their time unproductively. According to them, college students spend the majority of their day napping, playing video games, and eating junk food. Adults classify the entire college generation as a generation that gets things handed to them instead of working for it; which is a common misinterpretation. The truth is, many college students work while going to school and these jobs help them learn valuable life lessons such as time management, responsibility, independence, work ethic and it opens doors for future possibilities. Life skills such as time management are learned by students through employment. When a student has a job they learn how it feels to have someone relying on them to make it on time. They also learn to balance their time efficiently between work, homework, and social activities. A job can show them the importance of prioritizing and

Santiago and the Marlin - The Old Man and the Sea

The Old Man and the Sea is a novel that shows a great adventure between an old man and a great fish. The Old Man and the Sea focuses on the epic struggle between the main character, Santiago, and a marlin he hooks off the coast of his village. Santiago and the marlin are both capable of great endurance and both face their mortality and great loss in the novel, but they are distinct from each other in that the old man Santiago is consciously aware of the magnitude and meaning of their struggle. While there are many similarities between the old man, Santiago, and the marlin, the most noticeable similarity that is revisited again and again by Hemingway is the fact that both Santiago and the marlin are capable of fighting long and hard hours during being challenged. Early in the struggle with the marlin, Santiago cuts his hand on the line on which the marlin is hooked. "The old man would have liked to keep his hand in the salt water longer but he was afraid of another sudden lurch by

The Slow-Down of Development in China

I. Introduction 1. General Statement Being the world's one of most populous countries with a population of over 1.3 billion, China covers approximately 9.6 million square kilometers of the world land, and it is the second largest country by land area. China consists of 22 provinces, 5 anatropous regions, 4 direct- controlled municipalities, and 2 mostly self-governing special administrative regions. The capital city is Beijing. Moreover, this country practices socialist single-party state, and for some people, they will say, "communism." In the past few years, China was the second largest economy in the world following the United State, but in 2014, China beat the US and became the world's largest economy with $17,632 trillion as the purchasing power parity (PPP). Being the world's largest economic make people think China is a developed country. In advance countries, many scholars stated that China is still a developing country. Moreover, in 2014, President Xi Jiping of the

Humans' Survival in Extremely Cold Temperatures

Living in extremely cold environments such as the north and south, poles of the Earth, has many challenges for most species. This report explores how humans are affected by the extremes, and the many ways they may survive. One of the biggest challenges for humans to survive in cold extremes, is loss of heat from the body. The average temperature for Antarctica is -50°C, with the lowest temperature ever recorded being -89°C at Vostok Station. There are up to 5,000 people working in Antarctica, and because of this temperature, they and their equipment/machinery, without aid, would not survive. The human body is not designed for extreme cold, most of us live in temperate climates. Although some groups have learned to adapt to this, such as the Inuit in Arctic Canada, the vast majority of humans have no experience with this kind of cold. In this environment, there is the potential that workers would experience hypothermia. When someone is exposed to extremely cold temperatures for a prol

Ghettoization in Elie Wiesel's Night

In his book Night, Elie Wiesel first describes the ghettos as "not a bad thing," which is surprising since we know all know what was coming next. Elie was placed in the larger of the two ghettos located in the town of Sighet which occupied four streets, one of which was Serpent Street, the street where Elie's house was. His family was lucky since most of the Jewish families were torn from their homes and towns and thrown onto the streets of the ghettos. Having been fortunate enough to keep their house, Elie's family took in any displaced relatives and life seemingly returned to normal. A Jewish Counsel was appointed to create the illusion of control by the Nazis, which worked. Elie stated "this was a good thing," unaware of the real purpose of these counsels. Even being separated by the barbed wire on the fences were seen as "not a bad thing." According to Elie, it seemed as if the Jewish community felt relieved that they no longer had to look at "all those hostile faces, endure those hate-filled stares" and being surrounded b

The Cold War - America and the U.S.S.R.

The Cold War could be referred to as the "battle of ideas" because they never had an actual declared winner. The Soviet union and the United states had very different views about Communism, Capitalism, and Socialism. The Soviet union's plan was to spread communism worldwide. On the other hand, the United states wanted to stop communism from spreading to any other countries and to stop the belief on Communism in all the countries that do believe in it. Today there are only five countries that are currently Communist. China, Cuba, Laos, North Korea, and Vietnam. China has been Communist since 1949, Cuba since 1961, Laos since 1975, North Korea since 1948, and Vietnam since 1976. The United states is a mixture between capitalist and socialist. They claim to be more capitalist than Socialist, but today is a even half and half between the two. This was one of the causes of the Cold War. The U.S.A did not believe in Communism at all what so ever like the U.S.S.R did. The Iron Curt

The Indigenous Peoples of Amazonia

This video shows us challenges and issues that these indigenous peoples face from day to day. We learn about the poverty and well-being that they live in. We see how they are out casted from the outside world and the many attempts to pacify these vulnerable societies. We also learn about the work of Erwin Patzelt, the Fillas Boas brothers, and also the impact of the Christian missionaries. We learned an extensive amount of information pertaining to the tribes in the Xingu region and as well as the indigenous peoples of the upper Amazon. In my opinion, this film gave us a very informative summary of the history of the indigenous peoples of the Amazon. Known as nomadic tribes, they live by hunting, fishing, and gathering. To me it was

University of Scranton - Creation Story

In the beginning, when God created the University of Scranton, the city was rich with coal and very profitable mining businesses. The businesses became so successful Scranton obtained the nickname, "The Electric City", because it provided other areas with mass amounts of fossil fuels. Within the city were railroads that allowed for the sale and shipment of fuels. This became a symbol of the cities hard work and dedication to the industry. As Scranton continued to experience success, God believed there was still something missing from the city. Despite the fact that the people of Scranton were enjoying their lives and finding much success in their business God knew the city was not maximizing its true potential. God commanded, "Let there be a university" and the University of Scranton appeared. The area for the university was split from the rest of the city and that was the first day. Once the area for the university was decided God created the class buildings. God knew that for the U of S to be successful the classrooms were the most important part. Big, beautiful buildings were desi

Are International Students Rewarded Fairly?

To the Office of Financial Aid, Higher education has been increasing exponentially throughout the globe. As the higher education sector expands, the desire and the curiosity mostly enhances the international students to start pursuing their higher studies in the United States. But the question is, do most of them achieve what they came for? Why do they fall behind in classes? These are common questions raised on surveys. I would like to address this letter on current methodologies and aspects governing the international student retention at universities and the reasons I think they are not being rewarded fairly. I strongly believe that money issues and student advising are the two primary factors which limit international students from being successful. International student enrolment in the U.S has risen over 50% since 2004/05 (Institute of International Education 2012). Some institutions had their international student population grown from 4% to 10% of total enrollments in the freshman year. (Simmons 2013). These admissions bring this country millions of dollars each year. But, their chances to receive s

Allowing People to Pay for Organs - Costs and Benefits

The article "Kidneys for Sale" goes into depth about people being able to pay for organ transplants from different points of view. The article identifies the potential pros and cons of being warranted to sell and purchase organs instead of waiting for an organ based upon a waiting list. Also the process of purchasing organs is compared to other countries that do not practice the same standards as the United States. It was pointed out that a number of medical procedures are done for payment in the United States, for example the sale of a man's sperm or a woman's eggs. However, in the United States it remains illegal to purchase an organ. One pro that was weighed when looking at the idea of allowing organs to be purchased is the amount of people that will be saved due to not having to wait on an organ to become available. Organs such as kidneys, livers, hearts, lungs, etc. would be inaccessible through the sale and purchase of an organ as well as paying for the procedure to be done. The article describes the costs associated with transplant surgeries, which can reach as much as $650,000. These costs are extremely high although they

A Closer Look at Bullying

Bullying? I thought that was a mere myth, something that only existed in the world of movies and teenage fiction books. In school, nobody was ever pinned to their locker for lunch money or viscously tossed around in the hallways by a gang of reformed school fugitive's. High school is an innocuous environment where kids can truly express themselves while building a foundation for the rest of their lives. Well, I was gravely mistaken. My sophomore year smacked me with a dose of reality when I became the bull's eye to a pack of wolves I used to call my friends. Never in an eternity did I think for one split second that I'd be a glowing target to my so called companions. Some would say I was the outcast of the group because I abandoned soccer to go "geek it up" as they would say, in musical theatre. Also, I

Mama's Choice in Everyday Use

This paper argues that Mama made the right decision in, "Everyday Use," by Alice Walker. When Mama gave the quilts to Maggie and did not let Dee take them away to hang them on her wall like in a museum to show off her perceived roots, to showcase her heritage. Walker's short story raises questions about how identity, tradition and ideology are connected to each other and provides her own personal answer to it. The 1960's saw a pragmatic and systematized raising of black consciousness, which brought with it an intense interest in Africa that was aided by different Cultural Nationalist movements, like Rastafarianism, the, "Back to Africa," movement etc. and made this search the focus of Afro-American fiction, (Bishop, Christian 10-13). This was the social background of the period when Everyday Use was written and it is generally perceived to be Walker's criticism of the African American obsession with its African roots and it provides Walker's answer to what heritage means a

Stages of Second Language Acquisiton

Introduction Human beings refer to communicate with each other to share our knowledge so it means that using language to share the knowledge with individuals make human different than others in the universe. It is stated that ' 'Language can be defined as a socially shared code or conventional system for representing concepts through the use of arbitrary symbols and rule-governed combinations of those symbols''. (Owens, 2012) Language is not just a term refers to norms of speech; it is also related with the culture of different societies. Language has been viewed ' 'as a complex communication system which must be analyzed on a number of levels: Phonology, syntax, morphology, lexis, semantics, pragmatics, discourse.''. (Mitchell, Myles & Marsden, 2013). Languages, like human, ' 'evolve, grow and change.''. When we look at the papers of the history, it can be seen that there are a lot of language which has been changed or lost. Linguists, who focus on

Non-Equivalence Caused by Culture-Specific Concepts

Nowadays, translation plays an important role in the process of the globalization that is not only conveying the meaning of languages but also a bridge connecting countries and their culture together. Translations have to improve their professional knowledge and learn about other culture as well. However, translators usually cope with non-equivalence at word level caused by culture-specific concept. There are even many words that are so closely connected with or influenced by a particular culture that they do not have an equivalent in any other language. After dealing with the difficulties implied in the lack of equivalence at word level, Baker (1992, p. 26-42) proposes nine strategies to solve non-equivalence at word level. According to Pham Thanh Binh (2010), when applying to English – Vietnamese circumstance, there are 8 in 9 strategies is suitable. The first method is translation by a more specific word in which a more specific word is used to translate an English word into

Creative Expressions and Religion

Creative expressions are used to deepen our understanding of religion and the different religious teachings bin them. They convey through music, film and literature. Furthermore music essential part of creative expressions as it holy mentioned that we should praise God through music - ''sing to him, sing praises to him: tell of all his wondrous work!'' The classical theism show that God is omniscient (all knowing) and omnipotent (all powerful) and omnibenevolent (all loving) it does raise the question that does creative expression in music convey God's attributes? And how much of a significant does it really give? Handel's "Messiah" is a great example of how knowledge and the nature of God/the holy can be conveyed through the use of music. The song "Messiah" was written by a German composer, George Friederic Handel and is one of the most well-known pieces of music. "Messiah" is an oratorio (a sacred text set to music without drama) and was first performed on 13th April 1742 in D

Analysis of J.K. Rowling's Harvard Commencement Speech

Introduction Thousands of people, old and young, graduates and non-graduates, came to watch the famous author of the Harry Potter book series, J.K. Rowling, come forth and present herself to many young Harvard University graduates, in June of 2008. She was to give an important commencement speech that would use three key elements in order to persuade the Harvard students, who sat before her, to take on her advice on the "benefits of failure" and the "importance of imagination" (Rowling). Although she seemed nervous, J.K. Rowling gave a powerful speech. She executed some rhetorical aspects such as purpose, voice, and ethos. Rather than wasting their time by giving a monotone, boring speech she talks about her own life experience of how she was the biggest failure she knew and how she was living poverty. This shocked some listeners, as she is one of the wealthiest people living today. She talks about how failure was something that she had feared but had to accept whi

Two Cheers for Examinations by Joy Alonso

In the essay "Two Cheers for Examinations," author and former English teacher Professor Joy Alonso focuses primarily on the need of examinations in the realm of education. As a response to a debate about the effectiveness of examinations Alonso puts together a paper to persuade the reader that examinations are important; however, her essay is not wholly effective to persuade the reader. The author emphasizes thoroughly on the positive sides of examinations though she also cites few examples revealing the negative side of the process of examination. Going through the essay a reader can definitely understand that Alonso, throughout her essay, has remained inclined towards proving the worth of examinations as a tool for evaluation and as a means for stimulation. With proper logical approach, the author is able to make the readers understand that if examinations have the power to determine which student is progressing academically and which student is not, then they also have the

Business Assessment - Apple Consumer Behaviour

This discussion refers to consumer behavior theory that is applied in the above commercial. Apple is targeting the personal consumer which not only buys for themselves but for friends and family also. Personal consumers have been also referred to as the end user. These personal consumers have a high level of involvement due to the fact that their need for the apple watch is constantly being used for everyday life situations (Schiffman & O'Cass & Paladino & Bednall 2014, p. 4-26). The need for recognition refers to the number of uses the apple wa

Iravati Karve and Aristotle on Tragic Heroes

Talking of Karna in the same aspect, he is a noble character. Since, despite being the son of Hindu God Surya and unmarried Princess Kunti, he was forced by the destined circumstances to accept the life of a Suta boy. Since according to Aristotle, a tragic hero often belongs to a noble birth, or rises to noble standing and Karna fulfills both these conditions well in his case. As a young woman, princess Kunti had been granted a boon by sage Durvasa to be able to invoke any deity to give her a child. Eager to test the power, while still unmarried, she called upon the solar deity Surya and was handed Karna wearing armour (Kavacha) and a pair of earrings (Kundala). Afraid of being an unwed mother and having a bastard, Kunti placed the baby in a basket and set him afloat on a river. After the unwanted infant was abandoned by his princess mother, he had grown up in the house of a Suta, a chariot, Adhiratha. Adhiratha and his wife Radha brought him up so Karna got the name of Sutaputra. Sinc

Discrimination in To Kill A Mockingbird

The novel, "To Kill A Mockingbird," by Harper Lee, takes place during the Great Depression. While the town of Maycomb struggles with this downfall, they have a greater battle to face, discrimination. Lee presents the acts of prejudice and exhibits the tragic consequences that fall upon those involved. One of the main victims of prejudice in the town of Maycomb was Tom Robinson. Tom was a victim of it, not only because he was black but because he was kind to everyone, even racist white people. Firstly, everyone in Maycomb believes the lies that the Ewells are spouting. This is shown through how people in the town do not dig deeper or look for clues to prove Tom to be innocent. Secondly, the trial was truly and tragically unfair, especially with everyone on the jury being extremely racist. When Bob Ewell said, "I seen that black nigger yonder ruttin' on my Mayella!" (231), nobody cared that Bob in

Beats By Dre - Commercial Analysis

While parents try to be the biggest role models in their child's lives, sports figures and music stars are just as prominent in their child's life, whether parents approve of this or not. The marketing department at Beats By Dre realized this, combining music and sports to launch a commercial big enough to match the event it was promoting. On June 5th, 2014 Beats By Dre released a mega-commercial that clocked in at just over five minutes. Titled, "The Game Before The Game," the commercial focuses on Neymar, a professional soccer player for Brazil, and his preparation for the upcoming FIFA World Cup. The World Cup is the biggest sporting event in the world, and before this year's World Cup, all eyes were on Neymar. By using the ethos already associated with Neymar and the World Cup, Beats by Dre caught the eye of millions while promoting their super high-end headphones. Athletes worldwide take preparation for games very seriously, from high school football to professional soc

Eudora Welty - One Writer's Beginnings

Some children are products of their environment; they grow up to pursue the same career or gain the same interests as those people around them. Eudora Welty grew up in an environment that was enriched with books and reading, which later impacted on her craft as a writer. In her autobiography, One Writer's Beginnings, Eudora Welty shares the value and intensity of her experiences with books and reading through descriptions of Mrs. Calloway, her mother, and herself. Welty's descriptions of her encounters with Mrs. Calloway, the librarian, serve to portray the powerful atmosphere of reading and the value of books in her childhood. Mrs. Calloway's strict policies in the library exhibited how she protected the library and her books. The library was enveloped with signs of "SILENCE in big black letters". The images of the capitalization of these signs convey the intensity of Mrs. Calloway's strive for an ideal reading climate, therefore exemplifying her feelings of how reading is
