The Scared Straight Program

The evolution of scared straight programs started after the 1978 documentary, directed by Arnold Shapiro, aired on television. It showed a group of juvenile delinquents in Rahway State Prison being berated by prisoners. The purpose of the documentary was to deter other juveniles from making bad decisions and ending up in jail amongst the awry prisoners. The director and producer thought that if the television audience saw the documentary, it would be enough to discourage future criminal behavior. After the original documentary aired in the late 1970s, three remakes aired; one in 1980, one in 1987 and another one in 1999. Program Details According to Strategiesforyouth.com, scared straight is a program that brings at-risk youth into an adult prison where they are confronted by inmates. The program includes prison tours, personal stories from inmates and the integration of youth into the prison population (2012). The point of these programs is to scare juveniles away from crime-how

A Discussion on Same-Sex Marriage

The topic of same-sex marriage, or gay marriage, is extremely divisive in today's society. This paper will address some of the issues surrounding gay marriage. Many in favor of same-sex marriage suggest that gay couples should have the same marital benefits as heterosexual couples, which is simply a civil rights issue. In contrast, those against same-sex marriage see this concept as a moral matter, which violates traditional ethical standards. Since the beginning of time, most cultures have acknowledged marriage a unity between men and women. In addition, the concept of traditional marriages has been challenged in some states to allow same-sex marriage as well. In response to this movement, many states have passed marriage laws to forbid gay marriages. Hence, currently there are some states in favor of gay marriage and some states against gay marriage. Moreover, there are many ways to look at this issue such as personally, religiously, and politically. According to this argument, ther

Why Children Need Stable Families

1.0 Introduction The World Health Organization points to the vital role environment plays in social and emotional development, particularly during early childhood, which it describes as the most significant developmental phase of life. (Secor, N/A) This suggests that the emotional development of a child is not something to interfere negatively with as it can impact the child in so many different ways. Moreover, the most important aspects that build a home environment for a child are the parents or caregivers of the child, and the stability of the environment in terms of noise levels, finances, and others. The purpose of this report is to examine the effects that the environment a young child lives in, has on their emotional well- being. The environmental aspects of a child's life can impact their social and emotional development greatly, depending on the safety and stability of where they live. The research for this report will be limited to explaining why the home that children live i

Disentangling the Relative Contribution of Parental Antisocially

This study shows the familial risk factors for childhood disruptive disorders; it was performed by Marina Bornovalove with the University of South Florida; Ryan Blazei, Stephen Malone, Matt Mcgue and William Iacono with the University of Minnesota (Bornovalova, Blazei, Malone, McGue & Iacono, 2013). In this study, it examined the association of how parents handled themselves, family drama, divorce or separation, and child disruptive behaviors. The relationship between child and parent was followed closely asking the questions: "Was the parent a strict disciplinarian who used corporal punishment?" and "How does the family handle conflict in correlation with children suffering with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Conduct Disorder and Oppositional Defiant Disorder?" (Bornovalova, Blazei, Malone, McGue & Iacono, 2013). The participants in this study was consisted of 1255 families that was made up of 1230 males and 12

Incarceration and the Three-Strike Law

Most Americans have heard it, "three strikes, and you are out!". Most would associate the familiar phrase to the game of baseball. However, in addition to baseball the phrase is connected to the Three Strikes Law. Beginning in the 1970's the United States saw an increase in crime rates and realized new laws had to be put in place. In 1993, the "three strikes and you are out" law was first enacted in the state of Washington. After the law was passed, there began to be a rapid spread of states adopting the Three Strikes law. With the adoption of the Three Strikes law came many consequences for states. The Three Strikes law is a contributor to the United States problem of mass incarceration. In addition, this law does not take into consideration that as individuals mature they commit less crime. Also, the sentencing guidelines for the Three Strikes law are unfair and too harsh, which is ruining the lives of many men and women. Over all, the "three strikes and you

Learning and Communication Technology

Communication technology may arguably be one of the best ways to socialize and maintain connections with other people, however it also may contribute to ineffective learning in educational environments. Instructors face many challenges as they compete for students' attention among a variety of communication stimuli. Cell phones, and the broader array of digital mobile devices, pose unique communication challenges for both users and those with whom the students interact in regard with effective learning. The learning process can be disrupted by this type of technology, especially in certain academic environments. Communication technology may hinder effective learning by providing distractions, promoting procrastination, and diminishing the ability of students to focus. Communication technology such as computers, cell phones, smartphones, and other devices offer opportunities to deepen learning through creativity, collaboration, and connection, but those very devices can also be very di

Methods of Defining Psychology

1. Defining Psychology Psychology is the scientific study of human and animal behaviour with the object of understanding why living beings behave as they do. As almost any science, its discoveries have practical applications. As it is a rather new science, applications are sometimes confused with the science itself. It is easier to distinguish what is 'pure' and 'applied' in older disciplines: everybody can separate physics and mathematics from engineering, or anatomy and physiology from medicine. People often confound psychology with psychiatry, which is a branch of medicine dedicated to the cure of mental disorders. Some topics that 'pure' psychologists may study are: how behaviour changes with development, when behaviour is instinctive or learned, how persons differ, and how people get into trouble. 'Applied' psychologists may use scientific knowledge to find better ways to deal with adolescents, to teach, to match persons with jobs, and to get people out of their troubles. Accordi

The road map to a better enviroment.

The following discussion aims at providing design descriptions that provide communities with a significant overview of the crucial steps effectively needed to establish and develop consensus on community health and main environmental concerns while at the same time take the necessary actions to reduce them. This roadmap means that the structured roadmap strengthens communities to take the specified actions to reduce the mentioned risks as first as they can (Goldman & Coussens, 2007). These steps duly include the establishment of a partnership, the critical identification of community concerns, the community vulnerability reorganization, asset identification, immediate action identification, accurate and reliable information, impacts and risk ranking and the possible identification of solutions. Building a Partnership This involves the setting up of a collaborative partnership that will represent a larger perspective of

Suffering of German Jews in Refugee Blues

Refugee Blues is a poem written by W.H. Auden. It takes place in Europe during World War II, and it is written in the voice of a German Jew and what he and his loved one had to go through during Hitler's reign. W.H. Auden grew up in the United Kingdom and later became an American citizen. It was assumed that he wasn't pleased with Europe and that his suffering reputation made him move to the United States. The poet brings up a lot of themes such as fear of the Jews, their persecution or even the power of Hitler and the Nazi regime. W.H. Auden effectively presents the suffering of the German Jews through animalistic imagery, symbolism, the use of contrasts and repetition which emphasise the inevitability of the fate of the Jews. The author uses contrast to emphasize a huge gap between the rich and the poor, the German Jews in this poem. "Some are living in mansions, some are living in holes"; "If you've got no passport you are officially dead, but we are still alive, m

Interaction Beyond the Cell-Phone Screen

Decades the human species have used various actions in order to communicate. Language can be broken down into two main components such as language production and language comprehension. Within the last century the use of technology as a form of communication has heightened. Social media is defined as being forms of electronic communication through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content. Has technology become, "Mans new best friend?" I believe that technology has enabled us to become dependent on social media and how we portray ourselves, rather than how we interact. In response to the way that we represent ourselves I believe that social media makes us more isolated and lonely rather than connected. Today, communicating has developed to be as easy as pressing a button. With the intentions on enhancing the way we interact with one another; technology has enabled us in our ability to communicate. With the increas

Transgenic Organisms - GMOs

Introduction This essay will be focusing on genetically modified organisms also known as a transgenic organism, genetically modifying organisms for our benefit. The first people able to directly manipulate genes were Herbert Boyer and Stanley Cohen in 1973 with the use of the new-found biotechnology. Genetically modifying organisms are usually to benefit us and are a much faster and practical process than selectively breeding generations of crops that might not even have the traits you are looking for. This practice originated in 1871 when Louis pastor applied eponymous pasteurization to milk, to improve food safety. The commercial use of GMO's only started in 1994 despite being discovered years before. 1. To genetically modify and organism you need first to find and isolate the desired gene you wish to pass on to another organism. 2. We then need to insert that gene into bacteria, not any bacteria but the naturally occurring soil bacterium, Agrobacterium tumefactions. The gene is inserted into the plasmid of the bacteria where it will start cloning/multiplying until we have the desired amount of that gene. 3.

Disintegration the Family in Desire Under the Elms

What is the American family? This question was answered by John de Crevecoeur, in "what is the American?" (1782), when he said: "I could point out to you a family whose grandfather was an Englishman, whose wife was Dutch, whose son married a French woman, and whose present four sons have four wives of different nations."1 In fact, Crevecoeur summarized the history of the American family, in particular, and the American man, in general. There are many kinds of family systems in the world; the English family is but one of them. Bert Adams, in The American Family (1971), says that "the majority of families in the United States may or may not closely resemble one's own."2 Whether the American family resembles other families in the wide world or not is a matter of the American‟s concept of the family. Contemporary researchers of the family insist that no definition of the family fits the reality of all the cultural groups and historical periods. Perhaps the b

Film Versions of Hamlet

In class, we have been reading Shakespeare's famous play Hamlet, along with watching two altogether different Hamlet movies, one by Kenneth Branagh and the other by Franco Zeffirelli. We must consider with certainty that both movies made their particular rendition of Hamlet by deciphering Shakespeare's unique story in an unexpected way. In spite of the fact that they were both exceptionally successful movies, in my opinion, it is Zeffirelli who best catches the quintessence of the play in light of the way it adequately catches its viewers by the utilization of acting, and costuming, in the Ophelia madness scene and the Gertrude chamber scene. Zeffirelli exhibits a more proper perspective of the Shakespearean period, while Kenneth Branagh does not. Helena Bonham Carter, who played Ophelia, made an extraordinary showing with playing the part of a youthful lost young lady, who has experienced numerous tragedies throughout her life, and has now gone crazy. During the Ophelia madness scene

He's Not a Monster, He's Just Human!

American actor, Rob Reiner, once said: "People can be ignorant and still have loving, human qualities." It is true, as humans, we are bound to enact evil actions showing the savage parts of ourselves. However, even if we do, we are still capable of feeling and displaying love. It is this and the superiority of our intellect and emotions that separate humans from animals. As humans, we seek to mean in our lives, whereas animals or other specifies simply survive with nothing to look forward to. Humans can develop intense, complicated emotions, and think beyond our basic instincts. Signs of human characteristics are demonstrated through the so-called "monster" in Frankenstein. As the "monster" is released into the real world, he hopes to find acceptance and recognition in the human race. By the virtue of his appearance, humanity solely rejects him. However, he experiences the world around him and possesses the skills to learn emotions, feelings, and interac

Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) - Chickens

In the United States, there are over 300 million Americans that consider themselves to be meat eaters (Berlin). There are many types of animals that are killed and slaughtered so that the American people can receive their meat and eat and feed their families however, there is an animal that is treated so badly and killed so much that it is almost unbelievable on the amount that are killed per year. These animals are chickens and are known as "broiler" chickens which means that "broiler" chickens are bred and raised specifically for factories that use chickens just for meat production. According to the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) there are about 9,075,261,000 chickens that are slaughtered yearly and of those chickens, 69,683,000 of those chickens are used as layer hens which means that 9,005,578,000 chickens are used for meat consumption (Berlin). This means that if there are 300 million Americans that eat meat, on average, each American will consu

Case Law Analysis – Judicial Concepts

The case of National Labor Relations Board v. Noel Canning et al. was decided by the Supreme Court of the United States in 2013. The first party in the case was The National Labor Relations Board, which is an independent federal agency that oversees employees' rights as it related to union organizing. The NLRB also protects against unfair labor practices by employers and labor unions ("NLRB," n.d.). The second party was Noel Canning, a Pepsi distributor ("NLRB v. NOEL CANNING," 2014). The case study for this paper will discuss the importance of this decision for business and evaluate the key judicial concepts that influenced the decision. Background In 2010, Pepsi distributor Noel Canning was involved with negotiations with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 760. Both parties had a disagreement during negotiations when the collective bargaining agreement had to be signed. The union filed an unfair labor practice to the National Labor Relations Board. When the case was tried, the administrative law judge presiding over the case ruled in favor of the union in the dispute and ordered Noel Canning to sign the collective bargaining agreement. The

Teaching Sexual Education in Public Schools

Teaching Sexual Education in the public school setting attracts many different arguments that range from people supporting the idea, to those that are opposed to it. Different viewpoints have risen over the decades of oppositions, with a tremendous array of supporting views for the teaching of sexual education in the public school setting. First in the late 1960's and remerging in the 1980's following the widespread outbreak of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. However, opposition to sexual education has been based on a comprehensive approach in modern public schools instead of using the abstinence-only approach. In response, of the sexual education teaching in public schools, it should be taught because it will reduce the rates of teenage pregnancy, the transmission of STD's, and will help young people build and strengthen their interpersonal and relationship skills. United Fruit Company and Central America

American capitalism was ever as powerful as the 20th century. It's a memorable stage of time that companies were infamous for involved into foreign scandal that was written in history. More specifically, United Fruit Company, an American company, created relationships with Central America's dictators, manipulated government to gain enormous privilege in that region and left behind labor unrest and economic crisis. The term "Banana Republic" was first used to describe small, poor and unstable country with widespread corruption by O. Henry, in his novel 'Cabbages and Kings'. He was inspired by what he saw in Honduras, a corrupted country suffered from poverty, strongly under control by a foreign fruit company. It's tremendous to see how American capitalism has influenced the history of an entire continent in Western Hemisphere that the result are still exist until nowadays. During the first half of 20th century, Central America was under control of some of the most infa

Becoming a Small Business Owner

Baking is the Life "The definition for a business owner is an individual or entity who owns a business entity in an attempt to profit from the successful operations of the company. Generally has decision making abilities and first right to profit."[ CITATION bus14 l 1033 ] This is not exactly what I think or see when it comes to being a small business owner, but it is worth the risk, right? Being a small business owner is not what I thought I wanted to do for the rest of my life, but over the course of my life, there have been many obstacles that have brought me to this huge decision of wanting to be a small business owner. Making this decision, I will have to figure out what kind of small business owner I want to be, the responsibilities that I will have, and why I want to become a small business owner. Figuring out what kind of small business owner I want to be was not very easy, since I did not know what I want to be for the rest of my life. Then it hit me; I want to own my own Bakery! It was not until my twenty- first birthday that I figured this out, and the only reason I did figure this out w

Abortion of Down Syndrome Babies

Down syndrome is a genetic disorder that is characterized by mental developmental delays and low muscle tone. In some cases, the child may have physical delays and heart conditions due to the low tone muscle. This disorder is associated with the presence of chromosome 21. The statistics show that women at age 35 or older have a higher risk of having babies with Down syndrome. However, I personally know many young women that had their babies with Down syndrome at younger ages. Down syndrome can be diagnosed at early pregnancy, usually ten weeks by blood test, or later with a test called Amniocentesis. Besides the fact that this procedure is not always 100 percent accurate, it can also cause a miscarriage. In the United States, when the test result is positive, parents are usually recommended to stop the pregnancy. However, parents are not well informed that the test is not accurate, as they should be, and in many cases a lot of babies are aborted without having Down syndrome. In

Putting and End to Human Trafficking

Nothing drives the passion and stirs the emotion, especially in the United States, more than the horrendous stories of modern-day human slavery. Between 600,000 and 800,000 people worldwide are brought into human trafficking each year. Human trafficking is a form of modern-day slavery and is mainly broken down into two forms. Those two forms re sex and labored trafficking. It is a huge problem amongst females under the age of 18. Human trafficking is something that can change a person's life and take a total emotional toll as well. What makes a person or community vulnerable to human trafficking, why are women targeted for sex trafficking and why are children targeted for trafficking as well? These are everyday questions that get asked when Human Trafficking is brought up. Some people will say what makes a person or community vulnerable to Human Trafficking and there are many different factors to that. The article writer of "
