The Bismarck: German BattleshipAt the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean lies a German battleship whose name alone inspired fear in the early days of the Second World War. Bismarck, the most deadly, destructive and most feared German battleship that destroyed the British battle cruiser HMS Hood and severely damaged Prince of Wales, the new British battleship of that time in the Battle of the Denmark Strait. Bismarck was defeated and sunk in the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean after an engagement with the Royal Navy of a three days chase, without thought that this sea marvel could sink. Packed with astonishing array of guns and armored to its core with 8 x 15 inch guns, 12 x 5.9 inch guns, 16 x 4.1 inch AA guns, 16 x 20mm AA guns and two Arado 96 aircrafts, Bismarck took critical damage to every ship on its way and re-wrote history in 1941. She was named after Otto Von Bismarck, who was a conservative Prussian statesman that controlled the German and European affairs from 1860 until 1890. The design seems to look like a throw |

The Rise of NazismAbstract In this paper I will attempt to show how Nazism came to power in the events before and during their time. I am going to try and prove that although many influences and events lead up to Nazi rule, the main theme is the desperation of the German people and ripe economic atmosphere. None of the events in my opinion without one another would have resulted in the success of Hitler or the Nazis but I will emphasize the mental state of the German themselves and how bad economic situations lead to bad choices and angry people. Nazism was born out of many extraordinary scenarios all coming together. One of those butterfly effect scenarios in some ways, starting with, "the shot heard around the world". After many secret alliances between various countries in Europe were made in the early 1900s, Franz Ferdinand of Austria was assassinated. (lecture) After the resulting war was the string of events to cause the rise of Nazism. Germany's surrender after the war was devastating |

Victims, Perpetrators and the Rape CultureIntroduction In criminal law, rape is defined as sexual assault on a person without the consent of the victim. People often hear of cases of domestic violence, emotional abuse, and sexual abuse without ultimately realizing the meaning behind it. Rape is a crime of violence and aggression that can ultimately shatter a victim's life. It is a crime that does not discriminate against race or even gender. There is no way a person can prevent rape. It is a crime that can leave its victims with long term physical, psychological and emotional problems. This is a very interesting, and sensitive topic for me because I am a rape victim and I believe society and the idea of rape culture have a lot to do with the increasing rape cases throughout the years. There are different motivations and reasons that lead men to rape. Whether it is anger or a need to feel powerful, to dominate, or humiliate I believe they are deeply rooted in today's social structure. Stereotypes and stigmas about rape in today's society have evolved greatly from historical attitudes. What is it about our society that makes rape such as a fa |

Public Speaking: Not Just Another ConversationPublic speaking and conversation have long been linked in the American public consciousness. Communication experts argue that when a sender of a message gives an effective speech they connect with the audience on a personal level. In fact, a public speech can operate something like a conversation between the speaker and the audience. However, conversation happens informally and requires little to no advanced planning or preparation. Public speakers must abide by many formal guidelines and spend time in preparation before transmitting their message. The differences between these two forms of communication need to be understood in order to be an effective public speaker, we will discuss the different elements of both communication form in this paper. Elements of Public Speaking The elements of public speaking can be achieved through good planning, organization, and preparation. The success of a public speaker's message will depend on how well their message was organized. Beginning with |

Mussolini, Hitler and StalinAfter the First World War, the Treaty of Versailles was established. Germany was greatly affected by this because under the treaty, they were to follow some major changes financially, politically, militarily and territorially. Because of the Treaty of Versailles, Germany accepted the War Guilt Clause. They also were to pay for the damages caused by the war amounting to US $33 Billion. Aside from that they were only allowed to have 100 000 men in the army and were not allowed to have an air force. The manufacture, import and export of weapons and armaments were also prohibited. The Rhineland area was also to be demilitarized and they were to give up their territories to France, Belgium, Czechoslovakia and Poland. Because of how the treaty affected Germany greatly, this led to Hitler convinced Germany that he had the solutions to Germany's national problems. Hitler rejected the Principles of Liberalism such as Rule of Law, Individual Rights and Freedoms, Competition, Economic Freedom, S |

From God to the Simpsons - Lisa FrankIn the article "The Evolution of the Seven Deadly Sins: From God to the Simpsons," by Lisa Frank, she explains the seven deadly sins and how they have evolved from ancient times. In addition to explaining each sin, Lisa Frank provides an example of an episode from The Simpsons to help readers to get a better idea of each sin. She uses a humorous style to show how modern society uses the seven deadly sins on a daily basis. Frank's humorous and carefree tone explains society's downfall. Her remarks that she use fits into her overall theme of social decay. She starts of her paper by showing how easy it is to commit each of the sins by using herself as an example. All sins were committed by lunch time in her case. From the beginning of Frank's article, it ties into just about any person who has to w |

The Japanimator ManifestoJapanese Animation, also known as Anime has been gradually growing in popularity within mainstream culture since the 1960's, peaking at a market value of $4.35 billion dollars by 2007 in America alone (Wood et al, blog, 2011). However, despite this incredible global success many animators working in Japan suffer horrendous working conditions, ridiculous working hours and often receive an insufficient pay cheque that is far bellow the countries minimum wage. (Meth et al, blog, 2015) Many entry level animators working at small production companies are payed just 120JPY or $1 per frame instead of receiving a fixed hourly rate meaning they can end a 10 hour day having earned as little as $5. (Ashcraft et al, blog, 2015) Not only is this a completely insufficient living wage, it is illegal. Animation is an art form. The professionals dedicated to this art form deserve to be recognised for their skill and payed sufficiently. Around 30 years ago it was possible for a "Japanimator" |

Theme Paper - The Outsiders"Love is when the other person's happiness is more important than your own," said the gifted author H. Jackson Brown. Brown claims that the definition of love is when people make their loved one's enjoyment of their own. In The Outsiders, written by S.E. Hinton, there are some relationships that display people putting their friends ahead of themselves. Darrel, also know as Darry, defends and looks after Ponyboy. Likewise, the gang supports each other in a way no can explain. They have each others backs 24/7. In the same way, Dally Winston guards Johnny like a father might a son. These three examples, demonstrate that it is human nature to protect the ones you love. The Outsiders is a coming-of-age book, written by S.E. Hinton. It follows the rivalry between the Greasers, a group of young boys from a poor community, and the rich, high-class Socs of the same age through the view of Pony, a 14-year-old Greaser. Advancements of the 1920'sWhen I think of the 1920's I believe of the flappers, the growing economy and the glorious new ways of life. The 1920's was known for the way that the people pushed the envelope and were unrecognizable to earlier generations. This era was a major turning point for the culture in the United States. The technological advancements allowed for new ways to communicate ideas and beliefs along with increasing social interaction. The daring nature of the citizens also influenced this considerable change in American culture. Many advancements in technology allowed for people to interact more socially and spread their ideals and beliefs to a broader audience. The radio became a common household object, and many were able to hear the news, sporting games, and religious sermons. Even President Coolidge used the radio to deliver a speec |

Dulce et Decorum est by Wilfred OwenThe poem 'Dulce et Decorum est' by Wilfred Owen entails the experiences of soldiers in World War I. Owen's use of surreal graphics portrays an image of trench warfare that is gruesome and grotesque, offering a powerful message to the reader. Owen's poetry is used as a vehicle for the expression of horror and futility associated with war. Ultimately, the poem was written to dispel the notion that it is 'sweet and fitting' to die for one's country. In the first lines of the poem, horrifying imagery begins to introduce the poor physical condition that war has brought to the soldiers. Owen depicts the men as "bent double, like old beggars under sacks." This simile demonstrates how dirty and unhealthy the soldiers appear. Furthermore, the comparison of the soldiers and the "old beggars" is important because the adjective 'old' helps depict how the men have aged prematurely by their experiences. Not only does war have physical effects, but a completel |

Colonists and the Declaration of IndependenceWhat was the Declaration of Independence? The DOI was a 1776 document stating that the 13 colonies were a free and independent nation. Who wrote the DOI? Thomas Jefferson did, but why? The DOI was written because the colonists wanted to basically explain why they wanted to break away from Britain. Therefore, I am going to explain why the colonists wanted equal rights, a new government, and independence. Why did the colonists want equal rights? Well at the time parliament passed laws that violated their unalienable rights, and ruled the colonies without the "consent of the governed", thus making the colonists feel like they were being deprived of something that they shouldn't have been. In the Declaration of Independence it stated, "We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal, that are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of hap |

The Legacy of Rua KenanaRua Kenana's passive resistance against Maori enlistment and conscription during the First World War was an important event that affected New Zealanders, especially at the time. The most significant factor that contributed to this event was the government's confiscation of Tuhoe land along with the prophet movement and Te Kooti's legacy. However, another key cause of Rua's resistance was 19th century Land Wars, which along with the differing interpretations and neglect of the Treaty of Waitangi was a major source of grievance for Rua and therefore explains his resistance against Maori enlistment in the First World War. Arguably, the most significant long-term consequence of Rua's resistance throughout the First World War was the 2007 raid of the Urewera's and the Crowns apology to the Tuhoe Tribe. Other events that also affected New Zealand society include Rua's subsequent imprisonment as well as the social and economic decline of Maungapohatu. To a lesser extent, Rua's resistance also |

Claim of Fact: School UniformsChildren are easily influenced during the younger years prior to their teenage years. Beginning with the teenage years, children are more apt to make their own decisions, based off of what they have learned previously. Teenagers tend to not listen to adults as much as younger children would. This leads them to act on their own knowledge. That is why it is important to ensure children have the best foundation built, prior to their teenage years. This is particularly influenced at the child's school. Schools have great potential for positive improvements on children. The main way a school can make a difference is by having a school uniform policy. In the following paragraphs, you will see why it is a fact that school uniforms improve schools. Children spend so much valuable time in school. Uniforms create environments where learning can occur, behavior is better, the student's freedoms are not abused, and grades are improved. There where studies completed on middle school students that p |

Restaurants and Food Waste ProgramsIt's no secret that restaurants are a major source of food waste in this country, and a significant portion of farm-grown food never makes it to a customer's plate. American restaurants are notorious for poor waste management and it's painfully ironic how removed they've become from proper food and supply utilization. If our foodservice providers continue to waste food on such a dramatic scale, the American dining scene, as we know it, will cease to exist. To intelligently attack this problem, there are two routes that can be taken; waste management products and waste management procedures. Both approaches are vital to the sustained success of our countries food industry, and both approaches must be implemented, on some level, in every foodservice establishment. My background as restaurant cook has admittedly created some personal bias for this discussion. In my opinion, food waste in restaurants is a direct result of poor food by-product utilization and a lack of education in proper ingredient maintenance. The Concept of ProfessionalismIn my opinion, professionalism has many definitions and multiple meanings. Professionalism is a combination of expertise, competency, accountability, self-regulation and appearance. In an ideal workforce, professionals are committed to developing and advance their skills to deliver their finest work. They acquire the ability of efficiency and wisely manage their time. Professionals are honest and credible in all the work they do, as well as hold themselves accountable for any misunderstandings that occur in their way. Women and Religious TaboosAnthropology studies could be said to be as old as religious studies. In social and cultural anthropology, religion is considered universal. The presence of religious systems is expressed through a set of rules, precepts, and prohibitions that have to do with the family organization, the rules of marriage, the economy, the rituals, the different conceptions of health or disease, dietary prohibitions, gender relations, and others of different cultures. Most religions have their taboos based on ethical and moral considerations, as well as prejudices, and some of them concentrate on women, and we will focus on them. Anthropology has always been interested in studying the role of women in different cultures, how they lived, how they organized and how they are valued in a society, marriage and family. Anthropology also focuses on the perception of the differences between women and men, and thanks to it, new information is being introduced about sex/ gender. The sex gender system is "the s |

Becoming a Firefighter For my first essay assignment I will be discussing several different things that I have discovered about firefighters. For example I will talk about the history, what they specialize in, their skills, their pay, their requirements, the work environment, and also the types of advancements that they have. In addition I will be discussing both my thoughts on my son's desiring to join this career choice and also where I have obtained my information. Okay, let's start things off by explaining a bit of history on firefighters and how it began to adapt as time went on. The man that first came up with the idea of hiring people to combat fire was thought up by Benjamin Franklin while at Philadelphia in 1736. In New York, one year later the bucket brigade method was invented, which is one man passes a bucket of water to the next man until they get to the fire. Despite there being a fire department in 1871 there was a fire so bad that it almost burned down Chicago. Entering the 19t |

The Pros and Cons of Praying at HomeThere are many benefits and drawbacks to praying at home. If you pray at home, it is more spontaneous meaning that the prayer will come directly from the heart. When in Synagogue, people are not focused on praying, they just want to know what the football scores are. One of the drawbacks of praying in Synagogue is that when people around you are not focused, you will not be focused on praying. Firstly, if one prays at home, they don't have to worry about how they look or having to worry about fitting in by following a certain tune. When you pray at home, you can fix your mind on one thing, praying. In Synagogue, people lose concentration because no one around them is concentrated. At home you can pray spontaneously removing any distractions. Also if prayer is spontaneous, it comes from the heart due to there being no distractions. Secondly, G-D is everywhere around us. If that is true then why should someone have to do a long walk to go to Synagogue? For some people, going to Synagogue can be a real horror due to the fact that they live so far away. Praying while being angry affects the quality of the prayer. The Ba |

Aristotle, Democracy and DictatorshipIntroduction "Polis" is a Greek word defining villages and towns in a smaller sense and society and countries in a wider sense. A polis needs a form of leadership but the demands and definitions of leadership are inversely proportional to the number of inhabitants. For some a good leader is the person who protects them against hazards and enemies, for others it is the person who is a charismatic being who promises a bright future and there are those who prefer their leader to be a 'wise' man who makes all the right decisions. What all these independent civilians have in common is that they strive to for 'the good life. The leader is the guide who instructs his followers on how to realize the 'good life' goal. This should be done with respect for the people's independence and unless there is a major catastrophe like e.g. a threat of war, independence is sacred and people should never be silenced. To underpin this I, first of all, will answer the following question: How does the character of the leader(s) relate to the well |

The Benefits and Genetically Modified FoodsAs the saying goes "you are what you eat" and thus eating healthy and nutritious food is important in our daily life. However, a debate has been raised as more and more genetically modified food enters the market, as concerning the safety of genetically modified foods. Those who oppose GM foods argue that they are unsafe, but on the other hand, people who advocate GM foods, suggest that they are safe and beneficial to humans. As for my family, my mom used to be one of those people who were against buying GM foods and instead would buy organic foods, until recently. My mom read an article that said scientists have revealed GM crops are no riskier than consuming the same foods containing ingredients from crop plants modified by conventional plant improvement techniques (White). As far as I'm concerned, GM foods can promote the quality of our eating by improving the tastes, keeping time, nutritional value, and productivity. "Genetically engineered foods have had foreig |

Methods of Educational ReformAs John Dewey once said "Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.. » for years one of the main objectives of the government was to change our educational system which is known to encourage parents to give their child tuitions while young and stress them to earn admission to a state college. Our actual educational system gives place to elitism which leads to an alarming rate of failure among the students as most of the average students cannot cope with the pace of the educational system. The increasing rate of failure before tertiary level now reaching nearly 60% caused the ministry of education to take immediate actions resulting in an educational reform. In 2015, the government is aiming to introduce the nine-year schooling system. This vast educational reform has been presented to the parliament. They came with changes to the primary, secondary and tertiary educational system. Among the changes is the abolition of the Certificate of primary edu |

Compare and Contrast - Hinduism and BuddhismIn this paper, I am going to try and show how the Buddhist philosophy and the Hindu religion compare and contrast with one another. I will talk be talking about Karma, Worship Practices and, Dogma. By doing a compare and contrast of these three subjects with these two belief systems, we will see how they are similar and at the same time notice the differences. Hindu and Buddhist on Karma Karma is an ancient Sanskrit word that means "action." It means that our actions have an active force that can and will influence the outcome of future events for other people or us. Furthermore our Karma (actions) has a say on our reincarnations. The Hindu faith spans the globe and the people that practice this faith have many different rituals, they use many different images and names for the deities they pay homage too and have many different texts to read from. One Hindu belief is that when people die they are reborn into another life after this one. As stated in the introduction the idea of karm |
