Life Lessons in To Kill a Mockingbird

There are several ways that people grow up. Not all of them turn out to be what they are expected to be. The way a person acts is carved out by the peers that surround him. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus, a single-father of two school aged children, teaches life lessons to them, both explicitly and implicitly so he is an excellent role model for his children who can change them into better people. He teaches his children about the values of respect, understanding and tolerance. As a man who values respect, Atticus chides his children when they display negative traits of people in Maycomb, "No putting his life's history on display for the edification of the neighborhood"(page 119). Even though he loves to see his children have fun, he does not want them to disrespect other people and businesses just for their pleasure. During the trials, Scout disagrees wit

Social Barriers in To Kill a Mockingbird

Harper Lee's critically acclaimed novel, To Kill A Mockingbird, looks deeply into the beliefs and opinions of the characters and further analyzes the prejudice, racial stigma, and social barrier that took place. The story is told through the eyes of a young, adventurous girl, Scout, giving the novel an innocent and uncorrupted perspective of the society. Due to the abundance of prejudice in Maycomb County, many people were judged without getting known and, therefore, were outcasted. The novel refers to these people as Mockingbirds, hence the title. Atticus tells the kids "it is a sin to kill a mockingbird" because "they don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy" (Lee 119). Mockingbirds later become the symbol of victims of prejudice and innocent people who are outcasted and ridiculed due to the flaws of society. Some examples of mockingbirds throughout the book include Atticus Finch, Tom Robinson, and Boo Radley. Atticus Finch defended Tom Robinson, a black

Present Learning Habits

Visual, verbal, and kinesthetic are different types of methods in which people learn. People learn most efficiently by being taught in the way they can best comprehend and understand the material. Based off my past experience, I have noticed that some of my teachers would limit their ways of teaching which made it hard to learn what was being taught. Asking for help from my peers, getting a different explanation of the material benefitted me because I was able to understand it better being taught verbally. Educators should expand their ways of teaching in all ways so that all their students can fully take away the material they are teaching. Personally, I have come to realize about myself that I learn effectively all ways. When it comes to learning something, I try my hardest to understand it right away. If I'm confused or I don't understand, I don't become worrisome because I know that I will find a way to understand it. Listening to someone speak about something one time doesn't really help me because I tend to forget things easily. I have to be told multiple times in order to remember something. If I'm speaking

Once More to the Lake by E.B. White

E.B. White's "Once More to the Lake" is a descriptive essay that relates his trip to a lake with his son, to the trips that he used to take with his father. Though it is very descriptive, I personally think that it was too descriptive, and less entertaining. It being only around five pages, it could have had more of a plot, and less about telling the reader how it smelt and felt at the lake. White used description about the sight, smell, and sounds of the lake to help transport the reader to his location, and help them visualize it and see why he loved it. However, I think that the excess of description made it boring to read. I got tired of reading about the sounds of boats, and their cylinders. Though I felt it was too full, he did do a good job at paint

Overview of Anorexia Nervosa

Anorexia nervosa is a disease with a long history. While the length of time, an effective treatment still evades physicians and clinicians. It is known to have the highest rate of mortality of any psychiatric illness, between 20-25% (Watson & Bulik, 2013). What is it about this disorder that makes it so difficult to treat well? Anorexia nervosa is a disorder with a multifactorial epidemiology; it is thought to have a biological, psychological, and a social aspect. Treatment focuses on each of these areas, but has not been found extremely helpful. In this paper I will discuss the different aspects of this disorder and how it is treated. Anorexia has a very extensive history beginning first with the Greeks and Romans. Because of their dislike of obesity, women would starve themselves to look thin. Extreme fasting occurred in the Middle Ages among very religious women. In the 16th century the "fasting girls": women who would say they had magical powers that they could go wit

Marketing Strategies of Multinational Companies

Globalization is one of the most powerful concepts in today's economic development. National companies are highly attracted to the global market, and their interaction with foreign countries is becoming inevitable. For this reason, Wang claim that globalization results in the homogenization of buying habits of people from different geographical locations (2007). However, Mooij claims that "Although there is evidence of convergence of economic systems, there is no evidence of convergence of people's value systems" (2002). Rather, Mooij predicted that as income converges, people's consumption mode will diverge, leading to demonstrations of value differences. For that matter, Heatwole emphasizes the importance of studying the way of life that characterizes a group of people, by marketers, (New York State Education Department., 2006) to succeed in the long term expansion of the marketers' firms. Also, the shared meanings, beliefs, morals, values, and customs of a group of peop

A Prison Reformation

In America, prison reform is a significant growing issue. The prison population is expanding at a phenomenal rate, exceeding the capacity of the system to accommodate the inhabitants of the incarcerated. The focus is increasingly on rehabilitation as a means to reduce recidivism or prisoner relapse to crime. Prison in the United States is utilized more than any other nation, and the economy suffers financially from the extremely high costs. Prisons are expensive to build, maintain, and operate. However, addressing the issues are also extremely expensive but can be considered an investment for the future safety of the community, creating a healthier, higher educated, less drug-dependent, more available form of the prisoner who has a better chance of staying out of prison. The American corrections system in the previous decades has become a severe problem for the US economy. According to Krisberg and others, "The general US population grew by 37% from 1987 to 2009, and the prison

Innovation of Higher Education in America

In 1880-1910, the history of higher education in America experienced drastic changes that were necessary to move forward with the democratic way of thinking. This unit's reading demonstrates novel characteristics that were becoming a norm throughout higher education institutions across the nation. In 1892, the Committee of Ten began the conversation of what secondary education should entail throughout all of the institutions in the nation. The article "Importance of Post-Graduate Training," (Lane, 1926) highlights the importance of independent thinking as one learns a new subject. Thelin's outline of the major characteristics in higher education around 1880-1910 was meant to aid in the preparation of a formal infrastructure in higher education in the United States. The overall theme within the new infrastructure is that of a clear description of the role of any person within the institution. Thelin promo

A Choice: Adoption or Abortion?

According to US Abortion Clock, 979,066 abortions have been performed in U.S.A in 2015. In the worldwide, 36,351,269 abortions have been performed in 2015.There are many people waiting to adopt a baby. In the organization of American Adoption, the range of an adoption waiting time is from at least three months up to more than five years. Considering the possibility of the physical and psychological side effects as well as losing potential contributors to the greater good, and a long waiting list of adoptive parents, choosing adoption may be a better choice than abortion. There are several methods of abortion followed by possible physical and psychological side effects. According to National Right to Life, in abortion techniques, suction aspiration uses a suction device to sharp end to the empty uterus. Dilation and evacuation uses a sharp metal jaw to grape and tear apart and crushes a skull to remove, and mifepristone-abortion pill stops giving nutrition and attacks with a toxic chem

Human Spirit in The Hungry Tide

This novel is divided into two broad sections: "The Ebb:Bhata" and "The Tide:Jowar." The Hungry Tide is set in the Sundarbans, an archipelago of hundreds of scattered islands, some densely populated while others completely uninhabited, at the mohona of several rivers in the Bay of Bengal. Here there are no borders to divide fresh water from salt, river from sea, even land from water. Successful Surprises in Literature

In the short stories "Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge," by Ambrose Bierce and "The Lottery," by Shirley Jackson, the authors left their audience in shock and awe. These authors were successful in their surprise endings because of the unique arrangement of the story; they carefully set up subtle clues, and told the reader everything they needed to know at the end of the story. The authors of "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" and "The Lottery" did an astounding job at keeping the audience from guessing what the ending will be by writing the story in such a way that almost distracts the reader from the true outcome. For example "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" was written in anachronic order starting off by telling a story during the civil war era about how a man is about to be hanged. Then the story then changes direction by introducing that man as Peyton Farquhar and finally telling the audience about his untimely death. All the whi

The Manufacrturing and Use of Nail Polish

Compared to other cosmetics used today by many people all over the world, nail polish is a fairly recent invention. Around 600 BC, during the Zhou dynasty, the royalty used a nail polish-like product. By the turn of the ninth century, nails were tinted with scented red oils, and polished or buffed. A product closely related to nail polish was used in ancient Egypt. The wealthy class would use henna to dye their hair and fingernails. Henna is very different from modern day nail polish in the sense that it has completely different chemical components to it. In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, people preferred a polished rather than a painted look by mixing tinted powders and creams into their nails, then buffing them until shiny. Today nail polish is sold in tiny bottles with a brush for self application. Nail polish tends to be very popular due to a fast waiting period after application, and can easily be removed by a substance that breaks down to dissolve the nail polish

Technology and Education

Using technology by education, video games specifically, should certainly be implemented. Throughout the history of education, technology has been a vital tool for the advancement of learning. Long ago, charcoal sticks and boards were used for learning. After that, those primitive tools were replaced by pencils and paper. Just as long ago, so too today we are now on the brink of transition from conventional means of education to the new forms of learning via computers and or educational games. So it seems irrational that today's society is tentative about fully incorporating this new transition. This is clearly brought to attention by Pamela Paul in her essay "Reading Writing and Video Games" she states that "Even parents who scoff at the idea of toddlers learning from Dora gleefully boast about their 2-year-olds' having mastered basic math on Mommy's phone". Using technology in accordance with education, video games specifically, is beneficial to the learning proce

Radical and Liberal Ideologies

Introduction The liberals interpret and fundamentally believe that change must be devoid of any conflict to avoid disrupting the processes in society while the radicals believe otherwise and categorically state that change must be revolutionary especially that conflict is inherent in most capitalist setups in which the class is divided by social formation of the society. Change is concept of development and relates to complete or partial transformation of the society. The liberals and radicals both agree that change in the society and its political life ought to change but only disagree on the mode and process that this change should take in order to ultimately benefit society. Definitions The Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English defines change as to become or to make something become different. The same dictionary goes on to further define change as a process or a result of something or someone becoming different. There is no standard agreed upon definition of social change th

Comparing Religion and Science

Since the 17th century European renaissance, the debate about the relationship between religion and science has never been put to a rest. Even today, there are a diversity of theory describing the relationship between those two fields. Although different models of this relationship were supported by different philosophers, theologians, scientists, and others, and they are co-existing with each other, no one really has the ability to prove which model is more accurate and superior. Accordingly, this essay was written at the aim of expressing my own opinion in concerning to this ongoing debate. First of all, in order to carefully examine the relationship between science and religion, we have to explain what science and religion really are. In my opinion, science is both a gathering of knowledge of nature and a process to gain the ken of the universe we live in, and religion is, which I believe as after reading "the crowd", an organized system of beliefs, practices, and rules

Rodrigo Moya's Guerilla in the Midst

Rodrigo Moya was a famous photographer in Mexico who began his work in 1955.He was a renowned photographer but abandoned photography as a profession in 1967.He started photographing the sea, Mexico and the people living in it. His exhibitions are located at The Wittliff Collection at Texas State University, where I visited. From all his amazing work I found "Guerilla in the Mist" 1966, Sierra de Falcon Venezuela the most fascinating. This was a piece of five guerillas, who were part of FALN organization that were fighting against Venezuela's government. I was drawn in by this exhibition more than others as it showed a lot about what they were going through. The piece is in the color black and white. This bring a deep contrast between the men and the background with the trees. The background almost looks foggy. There is a clear definition of lines brought by the trees with branches. Argumentative Essay - Internet Connections

"Oh, no. I have used all my data this month, so I cannot connect to the internet." Many of us probably have said this or at least have heard this. If you encounter this situation, what is the first thing you do? You maybe look for whether there is free Wi-Fi. Many places such as an airport, a library or a subway station offer free Wi-Fi, but still many people will agree that the range of free Wi-Fi isn't wide enough. We are living in the digital information era, and the internet has become a necessary thing similar to water or electricity. It is important to stay connected to the world and people via the web, so cities should offer free Wi-Fi for the public. People who are living in poverty may not be always able to connect to the internet because they cannot afford it. Many schools give students on-line homework or use e-books for their textbooks. Then the kids from poor families need to go to public libraries to use free Wi-Fi in order to study and do their homework. But what if their parents are too busy and do not have time to take their kids to public librari

The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver

"A mother is a mother from the moment her baby is first placed in her arms until eternity. It did not matter if her child were three, thirteen, or thirty" (www.goodreads.com). Being a mom is more than just a relationship; it is a responsibility and obligation. However, the advantages outweigh any and all disadvantages. Part of that relationship is the unbreakable bond between a mother and child; a mother is a protector and provider, who would sacrifice everything so that their child can be successful. Each of the mothers in this novel leaves their priorities behind as they begin to put their children's needs before their own, showing their unbelievably deep love for them. Madoff Securities, which was created to match up stock buyers and sellers who were looking to trade smaller stocks. The motivation one would have to research the topic on the Bernie Madoff Ponzi scheme would be a result of the scandal constantly being spoken about on the news. Thus once intrigued by the recent scandal, one may wish to seek more knowledge on the issue. The Bernie Madoff scandal poses many concerns on the topic of business ethics, as well as posing an impact on the accounting community. It also becomes a present-day example of can occur in the business world behind closed doors. Bernard L. The American French Revolution

As you wished, Mr. Editor, I did my rhetorical analysis over "What Class Warfare Really Looks Like" by Dee Dee Myers, which is about the wealth distribution in our America and ongoing battle over which social class deserves a better tax break. This article talks about our ever increasing gap between the super wealthy and the lower classes, and what our political leaders are trying to do to reduce it. This topic affects us all, whether it affects us in our pockets or socially, college students need to know what is happening in the real world in order to be better prepared and not become part of the problem that our leaders are trying to resolve, and since we are in an election year, this topic becomes even more important. After reading this article I have concluded that this article should be published in The Shorthorn because I think it will get a great deal of the readers intellectually attached to what Myers is trying to say. In this article Myers explains the state in w

History of the Roman Empire

The Roman Empire was an undisputed superpower in Western Civilization. The Romans dominated the ancient world for five hundred years. Although the empire was once a powerful kingdom various contributing factors such as, internal decay in political and military issues, economics, sociology, and religion brought about the demise of Rome. The decline and fall of the Roman Empire was a long slow process with one problem leading to another, marking the transition from Classical Antiquity to the beginning of the European Middle Ages. The Roman Empire emerged from the Roman Republic, when Octavian defeated Anthony and Cleopatra at the naval Battle of Actium in 31 B.C.E., ending the civil wars. Octavian, who came to be known by the title of Augustus became the first Roman Emperor. He transformed the Roman Empire from a republic into a monarchy. Although he instituted many important administrative reforms and continued to grant the senate a role in governing, most of the political power remaine
