Hotels and Protecting Patron Safety and Privacy

There are hotels located all around the world, which means that there are hundreds and thousands of guests and patrons visiting and staying at those hotels. Patrons can visit a hotel to use its facilities, like dining in a restaurant at the hotel, or it can be a guest who is using the hotel as their overnight accommodation. Some hotel guests travel for business, while some travel for leisure. Whatever their reason for traveling may be, guests travel with an abundant amount of possessions and valuables. In most cases, stays at a hotel with go without incident, but on occasions incidents do arise, for example instances where guests' property were lost, damage or stolen. In those cases, is the guest held liable or is the hotel at fault? Hotel thefts are more common than rare. Crimes common in hotels are an industry wide problem, and the criminals have grown more clever and complex over the years. Many hotel thieves are very good at what they do, and many can even be considered as profess

Little Saigon and Paris by Night- Creating a Sense of Identity

Abstract Ravaged by war, violently pushed out of their home country, separated from their extended family and friends, and evacuated to a foreign country where they have no commonality, Vietnamese refugees faced the worst after the end of Vietnam War in 1975. Although they are caught between two different cultures and expectations, Vietnamese refugees and immigrants successfully adapted and integrated into America with their infinite perseverance and diligence. Vietnamese American communities have developed, grown and preserved a place within American society along with other Asian American groups. Admittedly, they have proven their continued success to the communist government back in Vietnam and become the model minority group in American society. Based on a short-time study of Little Saigons, a Vietnamese ethnic enclave, and Paris by Night, a musical cultural variety show, this paper examines the social, cultural, and emotional significance of such culture preservation in the liv

After the changes in immigration rules in 1966, large portion of skilled workers and other migrants came to Australia (Museum Victoria. N.d.). According to Australian Bureau of statistics, in 2011, there were 5.3 Million migrants in Australia out of which 265000 were Indian born and 390894 had Indian ancestry[CITATION ABS14 n t l 3081 ] . Moby Dick by Herman Melville

As Deborah Stanley, editor of "Novels for Students" indicates, Herman Melville was born in New York City on August 1, 1819. He went to work as a bank clerk to help support his family at the age of thirteen after his father's death. Gansevoort, his older brother, was bankrupt, and Melville had to rely on wealthy relatives for financial assistance. Once early adventure drew his interest for the sea, he set sail aboard a whaling vessel. In the South Pacific, he left his ship to live with a native tribe. Melville escaped the island by finding passage on a whaling ship from Australia. As he came back to America, he immediately began writing about his adventures. Melville's first novel, Typee, described his adventure and captivity in the South Seas as well as his second novel, Como. During this time, Herman met his wife Elizabeth and decided to marry her. The 2016 Presidential Elections

The 2016 presidential campaigns are now in session. We all have an idea of who we want to run this country, but did you ever think about how they get to that point? It is by a lot of hard work, determination, and usually money. These candidates spend a lot of time writing out speeches, and practicing answering any question that could be thrown at them, but in the big view of things, they just want money for their campaigns and to win our votes. The big question is: How should these campaigns be funded? One view point being looked at is that campaigns should be allowed to accept contributions of any amount, and from anyone. Any person should be able to donate freely and contribute any amount of money they want. They work for the money right? Why not let them spend it as they please- it is called freedom of speech. The people who support this view are mostly the very wealthy, or "super PACS". As defined on opensecrets.org, a super PAC is: Technically known as independent expenditure-only committees, super PACs may raise unlimited sums of money from c

The Politics of Donald Trump

Donald Trump is a politician, an American businessman and a reality television star. However, he is also a candidate for the Republican nomination for President of the United States in the 2016 election. Aside from his extreme wealth, not much qualifies him for running the country. Some people believe Trump can "make America great again", but are unaware of what he truly stands for. Trump has an authoritarian view on government and many of his proposals are unrealistic. Some proposals are simply unjust and impractical, such as his idea to construct a border wall and make Mexico pay for it. Another unfair and unjust proposal would be to ban Muslim immigration. Many believe his harsh ways are going to help get America back on track, but there needs to be a balance between a serious leader and a leader who puts all Americans best interests first. Trump has made immigration a major focus of his campaign and that is why many fear that targeted immigration will only divide our great country. Trump states, "I will end fore

The Declaration of Independence

The Declaration of Independence states: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all are created equal, that they are endowed..with certain unalienable rights that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness". Our modern laws do not support these rights that are deemed unalienable; therefore, there are still issues with equality, liberty, and pursuit of happiness amongst citizens. Our modern laws are supposed to support our rights to pursuit of happiness, yet the laws that are created have guidelines for people to be welcomed here. Restrictions are placed on people, so it makes it harder for them to purse happiness. According to US Citizenship while obtaining citizenship in America you have to: prepare for the N-400 applic

College and Student Debt

Worries about student loans make us feel anxious of the financial burden of having to pay it off after graduating. Many students enter college without thinking about the financial realities of student debt and have never discussed a budget with their parents. To live a successful, financially stable life in our society today, students should realize the importance of managing finances wisely. For as hard as students try to save money, they tend to splurge in college; we decide to go shopping for a new wardrobe, watch a movie, and go out to eat at restaurants with friends on the weekend. Budgeting helps us understand where our money is spent and also builds up our spending responsibilities. Our jobs as college students are to stick to a budget, understand loans before we borrow them, and stay financially informed. Considering the whole cost of attending college, scholarships and financial aid are crucial to ensure that one won't accumulate huge student debt payments after graduating. I

The Treasure of Oak Island

Oak Island; its name, geography and land are ordinary. For anyone who visits it, however, there is an immediate proclamation that its history is anything but ordinary. "In memory of those who lost their lives while pursuing the Oak Island Quest", is engraved on a memorial. The grey rock eerily resembles a grave stone, and is located on the island's side of the causeway. Aside from the memorial, island is the center of mystery, legend and speculations of treasure. This paper will discuss a basic history of the island's treasure hunting past, and present the most significant discoveries to date. Structures such as the Money Pit and Ten X will be discussed, as well as popular articles written about the island. Ultimately, I will maintain that Oak Island has attracted the interest of many treasure hunters in the past decades because of its history of recurring, strange discoveries and will continue to do so for years to come. By all accounts the first alleged discovery was m

Narcissism in Dorian Gray and Frankenstein

There are many causes of evil throughout the gothic, such as supernatural events, the undead, and the clinically insane. But one origin of evil that is tremendously prevalent is the characteristic of narcissism. After analyzing both Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray, it is quite apparent that Victor Frankenstein and Dorian Gray's narcissism cause much evil, death, and destruction. Throughout gothic literature, narcissism amongst the evil is a frequent trait. Those who are in power tend to have more narcissistic characteristics, such as Manfred from The Castle of Otranto and Count Dracula from Dracula. The powerful have always had the tendency to be more arrogant; its human nature. But Dorian Gray and Victor Frankenstein didn't truly have any real hierarchal power, rather their arrogance and narcissism came from within which inevitably led to evil. Being a confident individual doesn't make you a narcissist. Oxford Dictionary defines narcissism as &

The Open Boat by Stephen Crane

In Stephen Crane's short story, "The Open Boat," Crane demonstrates, through symbolism and allegory, that nature is indifferent toward man. The characters in the story come face to face with and are nearly overcome by nature's apparent apathy. Man's struggles in the face of this elemental indifference are marked by a grim irony the oiler, the strongest of the group, drowns, but the sea leaves unclaimed the wounded captain and the cowardly cook. The story had been taking place as a third person, for example, the sentence "None of them knew the color of the sky" In this sentence, the reference is the use of the word 'them' which mean a third person pronoun. Great Britain in the 18th and Early 19th Centuries

During the 18th and early 19th centuries, Great Britain was introduced to the industrial revolution. Scientific development, living conditions and the progress of agriculture where all a benefit that the industrial revolution brought. All of these factors then restored health, jobs and money in to our country, but this meant all rural areas became industrialised and were more urban than countryside. Urbanisation is the growth of cities that occurred in the late 18th century, such as Manchester and Liverpool, this was produced by the urbanisation as this targeted urban civilisation more than any other. This essay will be including social reform, the difference that was made in the class system and how the industrial revolution affected the urban life, but also examining laissez faire which is a system in the government that contemplate the government should not be included in the economic affairs as much as possible. Scientists combine genes from different species of food to create new foodstuff with higher yields, more nutritional factors and ecological value. The Confrontation

One day while me and my friend Chris were walking on the campus of Alabama A&M University we hear a commotion coming from the middle of the quad. The quad is a block in the middle of campus created as a hangout spot for students. I turn to Chris and ask "you know what's going on?" Chris loves to get smart so his reply was "how do I know; I been following you all day." After a few minutes of debating we decide to see what the commotion was all about. After pushing my way to the front of the crowd I find two of my friends in a confrontation. Immediately I regret the need for me to be nosey. Quickly Tray, one of my friends, notices me and I'm dragged into the confrontation. By me being both of their friends, I say, "I'm not choosing a side, you guys handle it." I try to leave but the confrontation just keeps building and its starti

Problems In Public Schools

The average student goes to school from kindergarten through twelfth grade. That's approximately thirteen years of our lives devoted to schooling. Therefore, shouldn't we get the most out of those thirteen years? Shouldn't every student get a quality education? A quality education is an education that is meaningful, worthwhile, responsive to individuals and social needs (Pirotta). In order to reach a quality education it is necessary to have proper funding and adequate teachers who let their students be creative and shine through their work. The effects on society and individuals that either do not do well in school or drop out are very overwhelming. A lack of funding, creativity and adequate teachers are negatively affecting our students and society in life after high school. In preschool, we learn through finger painting and making macaroni necklaces. This also teaches us the concept of creativity. However, as we work our way up through grade school, our lessons and displays of cre

The Importance of Showing Initiative

What is initiative? One definition of the word is the ability to assess and initiate things independently. Another would the power or opportunity to act or take charge before others do. When used correctly taking the initiative can move help a person move mountains if needed for the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step as the saying goes. Still like with most a little personal courage is needed to take that step. Here is an example of distrust that eventually leads to the tragic end of a girl's life. The protagonists of this tale were partners in arms and were facing a killer robot. The boy had a secret ability to rend space that he could have used to aid in the destruction of the automaton. He knew if he'd used it he would have been able to deal significant amounts of damage to the machine maybe even destroy it, but he was not sure this was information he wanted to provide to his partner since he knew she did not trust him as much either. Resolving to fight using h

Why We Like Social Media

I remember the first time I heard of a website called MySpace. I was in middle school and a friend of mine asked if I had an account so he could add me. I went home that day and made a MySpace account and added him. I then had a list of suggested friends, and it happened to be a lot of my classmates from school. That was the beginning to an endless social media lifestyle. Since then, I have found many social media websites on the internet. I have at least three social media accounts but find myself active with only one. In today's society, we all have or know someone who has a Facebook account. Facebook has become one of the most popular websites known to man, and I feel it can be a positive tool in the world that we live in today. Communication is the most common reason why people use social media. It gives access to talk to people, make friends, share stories, comment your opinion, etc. Facebook gives you the ability to instant message someone. In order for you to gain access to th

World War II: The US Navy in the Pacific - 1941-1945

During World War II, the U.S. Navy's main concern was planning for any attacks from Japan in the Pacific. Ever since the open door policy, the relationship between the U.S. and Japan had been tense as Japan continued expanding its territory in the Pacific. Japan invaded Manchuria in 1931 to further expand Japan's territory. As a result of the increase expansion in China, Japanese aircraft launched an attack on the American gunboat USS Panay. Japan had numerous reasons for their recent behavior. The Japanese home islands did not contain many natural resources. Japan had no source of petroleum and had to depend on oil imports, which only came from the United States. As of result, Japan expanded into oil-rich nations such as Singapore, Thailand, Philippines, and Hong Kong. To hide these actions, Japan hide their plans under diplomatic negotiations. However, because the U.S. controlled the Philippines which lay directly north of the Dutch East Indies, Japan felt threatened that the U.S. c

The Reality of Bigfoot

Bigfoot is an unidentified creature that has been rumored to exist over the centuries. Bigfoot is known to be around eight feet tall, is said to have a long face, weigh around 400 pounds, walks upright, muscular and human like feet. Bigfoot has primate features and also humanistic features. Bigfoot is covered in fur all over his body just like a primate. But the real question is, does this creature really exist? In 1967, the United States was taken by surprise when the Patterson-Gimlin film was released to the public eye. This was the first time Big Foot was caught on film, in motion. This groundbreaking evidence was shocking and raised many questions. Many people tried to debunk his video, but there was no evidence. Every attempt to prove that it wasn't authenticate, never worked. No one could ever remake the costume or the film, many tried but it all ended in failures. Big Foot has been in history all over the world. Ancient civilizations have had crave drawings and writings about

Movie Summary - Rushmore

Writer/director Wes Anderson has carved out his career as a filmmaker, with odd ball characters and plotlines that often resemble a Nyquil dream. Rushmore is his second solo project and mixes reality with absurdity to perfection, as we delve into Max's world. It is set in an ambiguous time and place, something Anderson prefers, "I do it because the nature of the stories is that they're not topical or timely, and I don't want them to be. I want them to be the kind of stories you can go back to and they won't feel dated" (Phillips,www.avclub.com). Co-written with Owen Wilson, the story is based on their prep school past in Texas and told through the twisted viewpoint that Anderson has made his niche. The exclusive Rushmore Academy is where Max Fisher walks the halls, possibly on his way to a meeting of the fencing or beekeepers club. Max isn't what you'd call a typical high school teenager he could be described as a mi

Changes in the Land by William Cronon

Sir Isaac Newton's third law of motion states, "For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction." In life everything one does has a positive or negative effect on the surrounding population and environment. This is evident in the European conquest of New England. In order for one to understand how the conquest caused distinct changes to the culture and ecology of the native population and land one must first understand how the New England natives and environment functioned before the Europeans landed, how the European settlements functions differed the natives ideals and culture, and what effects European conquest had on the native people and the land. The native population, often referred to as Indians, can be split into two different groups based on their locations in New England and customs. While both groups lived a life based on sustenance how they gained this is the key factor differentiating them. The Northern Indians were a hunting-and-gathering society while th

Globalization and a United Earth

It is as difficult to track the evolution of globalization as it is to define the term itself. The spread of information, the ease of communication, and the loosening of national boundaries have changed the way we think of and treat others from different communities. Thomas Friedman and David Harvey have both examined, from different points of view, how our global community has emerged. From an economical perspective, Harvey illustrates how easing market transactions between countries has had a substantial effect on globalization, while Friedman claims that technology has been the primary influence. Although both authors come at their understanding of globalization from different viewpoints, it is apparent in their arguments that they both agree the transformation of our world into a global community is only possible through individual freedoms. Harvey argues that a sound structure must be put in place by governmental forces to maximize the collective influence. He also acknowledges th

Maya Angelou - Champion of the World

People look at society and think there is no way segregation existed between African Americans and Caucasians. Periodically, young adolescents hear older African Americans telling them about what their ancestors experienced and what some of them witnessed within the African American culture. In "Champion of the World," author Maya Angelou talks about listening to Joe Louis' fight on the radio. She recalled how much anxiety people had built up over the fight because African Americans had something to prove. In the piece, Angelou suggests that Louis' win symbolizes African Americans' victory as a race while his loss would potentially and unfairly "validate" many Caucasians' claims that African Americans were inferior. Through the diction she uses, Angelou reveals the bigotry of the era and shows the match represents dignity for African Americans. The language Angelou uses such as, "cracker" and "niggah" signifies the state of the world during that time. Unfortunately, the continuing use of these words encourages behavior typical of the era when Dr. Angelou wrote "Champion of the World." Although the use of these terms
