Physician Assisted Suicide - People Shouldn't Suffer

What is physician-assisted suicide? It is a controversial debate so powerful and complex that it creates a lot of issues not only in the laws of public policy, but also in the ethical and moral values of people. It is a matter placed on the minds and hearts of all those involved in its decision making process. According to MedecineNet.com, physician-assisted suicide is "the voluntary termination of one's own life by administration of a lethal substance with the direct or indirect assistance of a physician; it is the practice of providing a competent patient with a prescription for medication for the patient to use with the primary intention of ending his or her own life". Put simply, it is a substance provided by a doctor to end a person's life. Research carried out by the Pew Research found than in America, views on physician-assisted suicide are just about equal when it comes to public opinion. They found that 47% of Americans are in favor of allowing physician-assisted sui

Reasons for High College Dropout Rates

According to a new study from Harvard University, only 56 percent of students who enter America's college and universities graduate within 6 years. It means more than 4 in every 10 students failed to graduate within 6 years. Having an excellent educational background is an essential factor to get a better job and to work effectively. However, one of the saddest issues in today's society is the college dropout rate. In many colleges it remains absolutely high. There are diverse reasons for that matter, but they all come down to poor academic performance, financial problem, and troubles with relationships. Firstly, the ability to study is the main element for learning effectively. Consequently, poor academic performance is a leading reason t

Proving the Existence of God

Questions about God's existence have been a source of confusion, debates, and disagreements for thousands of years, with believers, atheists, and agnostics holding various positions regarding the existence of a Supreme Being (Kreeft, 2013). As Pack (2013) notes, millions of people believe that God exists, but few can offer strong proofs of such a claim. Further, any means of proving God's existence would solve many controversial debates and lay questions about the origin of life to rest. A look at the intelligent design principle and the nature of the human mind indicate that it is possible to prove God's existence. Arguments based on design involve a strong premise that the existence of any design suggests the presence of its designer. Kreeft (2013) explores the intelligent design principle, noting that there is irrefutable evidence of detailed design in the entire universe that leads to conclusion

How the Ravens Will Make the Playoffs

I believe that the Baltimore Ravens will make the playoffs this year. They have a lot of talented players, and if they don't get injured, I believe we can make the playoffs, and maybe even the Super Bowl. We have speedy receivers, a quarterback with a strong arm, and an elite running back. On defense, we have all-pro edge rushers, a great defensive line, and a good cornerback. But we have to be better than teams like the Bengals and Bills to make the playoffs. The Ravens have a lot of talent, but their key players are Justin Forsett, Breshad Perriman, and Terrell Suggs. Justin Forsett didn't live up to expectations last season, only rushing for 64.1 yards per game, after rushing for 79.125 in his first season in Baltimore. He did break his arm during his tenth game, but in the first nine games, he averaged 68 ⅓ yards per game. I think that was just a slow season for h

Calico Joe by John Grisham

At one point in John Grisham's life, he had wanted to play professional baseball. Unfortunately, he found that he was not major league material. Later in life he would decide to go to law school and practiced law for almost ten years. At some point in his legal career, Grisham decided to start writing novels that revolved around the courtroom. While many people tend to associate those types of novels with Grisham, he has a few that stray from his usual crime themes. Many years after Grisham began his writing career, he published his first baseball book, Calico Joe. Knowing Grisham's past with baseball, it is easy to see why the story felt somber. During an interview, Grisham even admitted that a good baseball story needs to break your heart the way the game breaks the players. Calico Joe certainly fits that criteria as it is filled with heartbreak and pain. Calico Joe has many themes that not only draws the reader in, but makes this story a heartfelt and touching read. Grisham immediately presents the reader with a prett

The Value of Human Life

John Geiger once said, "A beautiful day begins with a beautiful mindset. Every day you wake up, think about what a privilege it is to simply be alive and healthy. Stop focusing on the negatives and everything that could go wrong and start thinking about what could go right. Better yet, think of everything that already is right. Be thankful for nights that turned into mornings, friends who turned into family and past dreams andy goals that turned into realities. Use this mindset of positivity to fuel an even brighter today and tomorrow." He shows how you should be proud of what you have accomplished and keep sticking to that attitude and mindset to continue doing what you're doing. Steve Jobs attempts to continue to this aspect by using rhetorical devices to convey his three stories, however he is dealing with graduates who just paid a fortune to be where they are today so it shouldn't have been issued the way it was. Steve Jobs composed a commencement speech to be directed

The Hound in Fahrenheit 451

Ray Bradbury believed that if information were to be restricted from individuals, that they would become assimilated to the only information a society allows or creates, eventually depriving them of their ability to be human. Mr. Bradbury depicts this concept in his book Fahrenheit 451. Even though the Hound is not present in the movie relative to the book, control is equally obtained in both mediums of this dystopia presented by Mr. Bradbury in spite of the differences between the book and movie versions of Fahrenheit 451. In the book, the Hound plays a crucial role in the way control is obtained in the isolated society. The Hound acts as the enforcer of the law in this society through inciting fear and implementing surveillance. If Chief Beatty wants, he just sends the Hound to survey an individual that is believed to be doing something unlawful such as possessing books which leads us into the next important piece. It is able to track its victims based on the chemical makeup of the ind

Abortion - One Last Heartbeat (APA)

Since 1987, there has been a debate on the physical and psychological implications on the health of a woman. In 1973, the American Supreme Court legalized abortion following the letter to the then President Reagan on the research findings of the minimal effects associated with the choice to abort (Eastek, 2007). There is an existent legal and moral controversy over the consequences of abortion in the mental health of an individual. Most Republicans and their supporters in America focus on the religious aspect of viewing abortion as murder because it is the elimination of a person. The Democrats, however, concentrate on the choice as a woman's responsibility because she has control over what happens in her body. This concept follows the recent legalization of abortion under the democratic rule in America and legal operation of the abortion and family planning clinics. Discussion Abortion causes psychological retributions that relate to the morality of the matter. Pregnancy happens as a

America and the War on Terrorism

The incident on 11 September 2001, which is well known as 9/11 tragedy, has dramatically changed the international security constellation. Some scholars believe that the threat to national security could occur at any time, in any form, and the actors itself are difficult to predict. The collapse of the World Trade Centre (WTC) in New York America, which were executed by the group of terrorists, was seen by many scholars as a defining moment that ended the post-cold war era. Indeed, the September 11 tragedy brought fundamental implications to the international political arena. For the United States, the incident was a "serious attack" to the supremacy of the superpower, which demands response in the form of a "war against terrorism". The pattern of inter-state relations also began to change by the increase of tension, suspicion and vigilance among the states which is portrayed in the multilateral interaction. The WTC tragedy, therefore, alters the international perception on terrorism

Eminem (Slim Shady) and the Rhetoric of Rap

Marshall Bruce Mathers, aka "Eminem," aka "Slim Shady," broke the barriers of rap, and changed the game of hip hop. Slim Shady became one of the most popular artists of all time through rhetoric. He did not appeal to one genre, rapped with great controversy, and did so with great success. Marshall Mathers grew up in a predominately black community of Detroit, where he would attend rap battles gaining the approval of the underground hip hop audience of a majority black crowd. Eminem was ridiculed, thrown off stages, and even bullied. Although this seems bad, it was nothing compared to black rappers coming from Compton and Philadelphia. Yet Eminem used his struggle as an advantage, and instead of rapping about his struggles through the hood, Eminem rapped about fighting and making fun of the media. Slim Shady breaks stereotypical boundaries, embodying the image of an anti-authority rebel, rather than the "white working class." In the song "Who

American Intervention in WWII

The 1930s were a very difficult time for most of America. The great depression could still be felt across the country and most Americans first priority was fixing the dreadful situation at home. The United States was becoming insensitive to what was happening to other democracies around the world. After World War 1 many Americans developed a strong sense of isolationism because they felt that we were tricked into the war and did not gain much compared to the amount of lives we lost. Isolationist also believed that America would not be affected by the war in Europe as long as we didn't get involved in any way. It wasn't until 1937 when President Roosevelt gave his famous "Quarantine the Aggressors" speech that finally started to get Americans to open their eyes and admit that if we did not help our allies in Europe then we would be next. Even though most Americans have started to realize that it will be impossible to stay completely isolated from the events taking place is Europe, the vast majority still condemned the thought of going to war. When the neutrality act of 1937 was passed, it allowed for w

Students and the Learning Sciences

The chapter described how learning sciences perspective has developed from the behaviourist models into the emergence of interdisciplinary field of cognitive sciences to the rise of computer technology as a platform to help children learn. The chapter also discussed several research findings and theories to include context in understanding learning and development and to provide some ideas for instructional designers to design more effective learning environment. I agree with the theory of Vygotsky's Zone of Proximal Development when students collaborate with more knowledgeable others and distributed expertise to complete the task rather than working single-handedly. A carefully managed group work will encourage critical thinking and active discussion compared to a traditional teacher-centered classroom that focused on drilling and memorisation of facts. According to Vygotsky (1978), children first develop lower mental functions such as simple perceptions, associative learning, and involuntary attention; however, through social interactions with more knowledgeable others, such as more advanced peers and adults, children eventually develop higher mental functions such

Social Classes and the Middle Ages

"There once was a time when all people believed in God and the church ruled. This time was called the Dark Ages." – Richard Lederer The Medieval Ages is the period of time between the fall of Rome in the 5th Century and the beginning of the Renaissance in the 15th Century. The Middle Ages was also characterized as the "Dark Ages" because it "described the cultural and economical deterioration as well as expressing what little was known during that period "("The Dark Ages,"). During this period, Europe adopted a feudalistic social system. Feudalism in essence meant, "the country was not governed by the king but by individual lords, who administered their own estates, dispensed their own justice, and demanded their own military services" ("Feudalism in Medieval life"). During the Middle Ages there was a very distinctive system of social classes each playing different roles in society. Church, royalty, nobles and peasant m

The Origins of Volcanic Hotspots

Introduction Plate tectonics is the main process that produces volcanoes, at subduction, convergent, and divergent zones. Yet, we see volcanic activity without the plate tectonics. "Hotspots" are found around the world. Many people who hear of the term hotspots, think of volcanoes and then the association of Hawaii, since it is a very common known hotspot. The Glossary of Geology (1987) defines "hotspots" as "a volcanic center, 100 to 200 km across and persistent for at least a few tens of millions of years, that is thought to be the surface expression of a persistent rising plume of hot mantle material. "Hotspots" are not linked with arcs, and may or may not be associated with oceanic ridges." "hotspots" are formed in the ocean by producing basaltic magma sources in the oceanic crust (Hawaiian Islands) and under continents where they produce granitic magma sources in the continental crust (Yellowstone). The concept of "hotspots&q

What is Ultimate Reality?

Christianity, just as any other religion, has a number of beliefs or protocols to follow in order to show one's love for their God. When we look at Christianity, there are multiple messages of how the gospel of Luke 4:1-13; 15:3-32 can relate and help us in our daily lives. Luke 4:1-13 is a passage that focuses on the temptation of Jesus by the devil over the course of forty days in the wilderness. While Luke 15:3-32 contains the parables about a lost coin, sheep, son, the father's love, and the older brother. Following the theme of "What is ultimate reality?" I believe these parables give a little insight of how people follow the belief of God to grow a closer relationship with him and how society incorporates the teachings of God into their lives. When we break down the sections of Luke 4:1-13 there are three major temptations that Jesus was faced by the devil but it all leads to being fulfilled with the holy spirit. Satan's first temptation was using the three words &qu

A Dill Pickle by Katherine Mansfield

In her short story "A Dill Pickle," Katherine Mansfield uses character construction to represent power imbalance between the sexes in a context of changing social norms. "A Dill Pickle" was written in England in 1920, during a period of significant European social and economic revolution. Labour movements and the steady recognition of women's legal rights were challenging traditional class and gender structures. Nonetheless, women remained disempowered in society. By juxtaposing the two psychologised characters, Mansfield contrasts Vera's feminine insecurity with the man's self-assuredness, demonstrating the power difference between men and women. Mansfield develops the character of Vera both to present her particular individuality and also to represent female alienation and disempowerment. Through the use of free indirect speech, the semi-omniscient narrator allows the reader to know Vera's thoughts and follow her stream of consciousness. Vera is quiet, self-depreciating and anxious. The frequent use of short sentences and exc

Apple and the Mac That Sold the World

The highly memorable and successful commercials of Apple Corp. we all know are the "Get a Mac" advertisements, but the commercial that started the campaign titled "Better" does a lot without saying a lot. Just like the title, the general statement that this ad tries to make is Mac is just better than PC. There are many tactics the "Better" ad uses, but the 2 main tactics used are simplicity and controversy. The advertisement uses simplicity and controversy by making the blanket statement "Mac is better at life stuff" but gives no detail how or why. This starts a debate between PC users and Mac users and that debate then creates a competition that generates recognition and recognition is necessary for expanding and selling more products. The commercial begins with 2 men standing in a blank, white room and from here we can see what Apple is visually trying to do. The PC character is wearing a brown business suit and large eyeglasses while the Mac

Columbine High School and Social Isolation

Social isolation was under-researched in a number of ways prior to the occurrence of the Columbine massacre on April 20, 1999. The perpetrators who were involved were young teenage students who had been described as loners and "socially inhibited." Social isolation appears to have contributed to that watershed event in Columbine, and therefore needs to be addressed. (Cotterell & Cotterell, 2007). The event was orchestrated by said psychopath Eric Harris and accomplice Dylan Klebold. These two students had, when it was finally over, taken the innocent lives of thirteen of their fellow classmates, wounded twenty-four others, and then eventually taken their own lives. The results of the tragedy were suspected to have been linked to the issue of social isolation. The intentions of those two young men were to not only seek revenge, but as a means of a protest of years of being bullied, intimidated, and humiliated by their peers. (Larkin) The prevalence of students who suffer from

The Life of Marilyn Monroe

Norma Jeane Mortenson, Marilyn Monroe was born on June 1, 1926 at 9:30a.m. in the hospital of Los Angeles, California. She died on August 5, 1962 caused of an over dose of sleeping pills. She was 36 years old at the time of her death. Marilyn Monroe's nickname was the blonde bombshell. Marilyn Monroe's childhood was described as unhappy because she was in a lot of foster homes and had alleged sexual assault. At the age of seven Norma began to live with her biological mother for a while, but her mother was then admitted to a rest home in 1934 because she was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. After this occurred Monroe went to live with a friend of her mothers, Grace, until Grace got married. Norma was then sent to live in an orphan home in Los Angeles, where she spent two years in. The Benefits of Whey Protein

In general, whey protein is advertised as a top performance enhancer for athletes/strength trainers. The general advantage of whey protein advertised by companies that process it is the speed that it travels to one's muscles after a workout (Also known as a fast digesting protein). Casein protein is referred to as a slow digesting protein. Both types of protein are components of milk. Milk is approximately 90% water. The remaining parts of milk are the proteins and carbohydrates. Out of the protein in the milk, 20% of it is whey protein and 80% of it is casein protein. Nutritionists emphasize the importance of both kinds of protein. Whey protein is used as an immediate source of protein, which is absorbed by the muscles quickly after consumption. Casein protein is a slow digesting protein, which is slowly absorbed by the muscles after consumption. The whole reason of manufacturing an entirely different product that separates the two proteins from the rest of the milk is the fact that t

Album Review: Lemonade by Beyonce

Beyonce's Lemonade is a piece of musical and visual art that is meant to talk about a great and deeper meaning in the world. In her visual album she brings up historical and controversial moments from the past. These include black rights, slavery and women empowerment. In my opinion her album could be connected to in an emotional level. She reaches out to her audience to let her own emotions be known throughout her songs and scenes. In terms of myself i connected to her emotional standpoint on strength and her own personal loyalty. In order to connect to Beyonce through her lyrics i feel as if i have to introduce myself and my own identity. I am a 18 year old boy. I believe in personal strength getting you through all bad situations. I believe that loyalty is one of the most important things in this planet. I feel strongly that keeping your family close will help you have a healthier life. I am very self orientated and now i am listening to an album about a married black woman going
