A History of Furniture

During the second quarter of the eighteenth century, the bold turnings, attenuated proportions, and dynamic surfaces of the Early Baroque, or William and Mary, style were subdued in favor of gracefully curved outlines, classical proportions, and restrained surface ornamentation. This new style, variously called late Baroque, early Georgian, or Queen Anne, was a blend of several influences, including Baroque, classical, and Asian. Boston was the leading colonial city in the early eighteenth century and the first to implement aspects of the new style. "Crooked" or S-curved chair backs, which conformed to the shape of the sitter's spine, first appeared there in the 1720s. This feature was borrowed from Asian designs and reflected a growing concern for comfort in the period. By the 1730s Boston makers had developed a standard chair form with a vase-shaped splat and S-curved cabriole legs (46.192.2). With their rounded outlines, chairs of this type represented a dramatic departure from th

Is Haig the Butcher of the Somme?

In February 1916, the Germans wanted to take control of a French town called Verdun to wear down the morale and strength of the French soldiers. They were determined to "bleed the French white". After a battle that lasted for 5 months, 700,000 French soldiers were dead and were desperate for relief from the British army. Sir Douglas Haig therefore led a major attack on the Germans by the River Somme, this battle thus was called, the Battle of Somme. The battle started on the 1st of July 1916 and lasted for 4 months. In this trench warfare, it was mainly the British versus the Germans and it was the bloodiest battle in World War 1. Not only did a lot of British soldiers die but Germans and French as well, this earned Haig with the title 'the Butcher of the Somme'. A lot of people at that time thought that Haig was a heartless, idiotic savage beast; but historians tried to look at things in a different perspective and realised, maybe Haig wasn't a butcher after all since

Capital and Financial Markets

Capital markets are financial markets concerned with raising capital by issuing long term securities. The securities in capital market are issued in primary market and traded in secondary market. The primary market is a market for new shares, where the secondary market is the market where existing securities are traded. The most common type of securities which are traded in capital market is stocks, bonds and mortgages. Bonds are long term debt securities that are issued by companies, municipalities and governments in order to finance their capital expenditure. Bond is a form of debt security where the issuer owes the holders a debt; therefore the issuer is obligated to pay the interest. There are both advantages and disadvantages of issuing bonds for example, when someone issues a bond, they tell the bondholder exactly when they can cash in the bond. They also set the rate of interest you will pay, and this makes the repayment of the loans very predictabl

Evolution of Languages

Except Chinese, the English language is spoken in more parts of the world than any other language. English is spoken in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and many other countries English is the official language that many nations exercise. It is thought to be the number-one language around the world. English was evolved from Germanic languages, which is part of the Indo-European language.  The English language has been around for more than 1500 years and has increased significantly since then. A Modern English dictionary like the Oxford English dictionary has 13 volumes. Each volume is said to contain around half a million words. On the other hand, an estimate of the present vocabulary consists of more than a million words. The dictionary consists of words that have been in use after the middle of the 20th century. Slang words, scientific terms, and dialect expressions are just some of the words used after the 20th century. The English v

Oreo Company and Online Brand Management

Oreo, the brand name and logo is recognized everywhere around the world and became the best selling cookie of the 20th century. But they didn't stop there. The company has one of the most active and effective social media strategies and expertly manages its Twitter account with approximately 442K followers. The reason I've chosen Oreo (owned by Nabisco) to make my research on is because I think it is a very reputable and nice company with a great practice of creating mini content series and marking them with creative hashtags. The social media campaigns I will outline below are some of the highest quality in my opinion. Real Time Posts Oreo's marketing team were the real heroes of the day during the 2012. Superbowl when the stadium suffered a 34-minute 'blackout'. Oreo's quick-thinking team came up with t

Bank of America/US Bank Financial Analysis

The financial analysis of the bank is a descriptive analysis of the financial performance of the bank that helps to evaluate the performance of the given entity. The banks financial statements are a different type of problem when compared to the other manufacturing companies. It requires therefore a careful approach when analyzing the performance of the bank due to its own unique risks involved. The banks profit making is considered from the total earnings from the borrowers return to the principal amount paid which is paid with interest. Banks encounter challenging risks and if not managed appropriately there is a huge danger of collapsing.[ CITATION Raj13 l 1033 ] They therefore require regulators that will ensure minimum levels of capital and hence help protect the banks and the banking system. According to the banking system in the US the banks there are regulated by the Federal Reserve Board, the Office of the Currency Controller or the Thrift Supervision Office. Due to these re

The History and Fall of the Berlin Wall

After World War II, Europe was in wreck. Germany was divided among the victorious allies in two blocks, West and East. West Germany was under the control of United States of America, France and England, whereas East Germany was led by the Soviet Union. The end of World War II was quickly followed by the birth of a new war, the Cold War. As a result, the situation emerging from 1945 and so on, was laying the foundations of a new chapter in history that would stamp European biography and global politics once and for all. According to Ross, this separation of Germany caused approximately 3.5 million people out of 18 million, many of them who were skilled workers and intellectuals, to head towards the western side of the country (459). "Moreover, the open border and possibility of flight to the West placed certain constraints on the entire 'construction of socialism' in East Germany" (460). These circumstances caused a loss of labor force, directly impacting the economy of East

Classification of Government Budget Expenditures

An administrative classification (ministries, departments, etc.), identifying the entity responsible for managing the public funds concerned. This classification must be sufficiently detailed to identify the expenditures of all government departments, including regional departments, to give managers greater predictability and facilitate internal control, in particular management control. It depends on the country's administrative organization and must cover all administrative units. It may include different levels, from ministries and higher institutions, departments and directorates, right down to individual operating units. An economic classification, or classification by type of expenditure, is used for day-to-day administration. Classification by type (e.g. electricity expenses, student grants, transportation expenses) can also be used to compile the government flow of funds Table (TOFE) and the national accounts. This classification must be consistent with the economic classificat

Quebec and Bills 101 and 14

English. French. Spanish. Italian. Mandarin. All of which are languages present in Quebec. None of which are superior to one another, or at least shouldn't be. Is any language better or superior? If I tell you that a man got fined $1900 for having the name of his coffee shop spelled in Italian rather than in French. The man spelled it caffe; C-A-F-F-E. The way the OQLF, the Office de la language Francais, wanted it spelt was C-A-F-E. This man got fined ONE THOUSAND, NINE HUNDRED DOLLARS for and extra "F". This is due to the Bill 101 section 58. Good morning Mr. Dufault and class, today I would like to talk to you about the language dispute over English and French in Quebec and the language affects of Bill 14, the revised version of Bill 101. Bill 101 was created to recognise French as the official language of Quebec. This Bill applies greatly to the educational system, the use of French in the workplace and the use of the English language in Quebec. This Bill should be changed. But in the coming future, Parti Quebecoise is trying to impose Bill 14. This Bill is created to enhance Bill 101 due to the fact that Parti Quebecoise was not satisfie

When Athletic Training Backfires

This article written by Gina Kolata, is about a 15- year old boy named Erik Kraus, who had been heavily training for track & field. Over a period of 18-months, Erik's training was intense and he'd become a lot faster but what he didn't know was that training too much can have a negative long term effect on the athletes body. His father, Dr. William Kraus, an ex- track athlete and now a cardiologist became concerned with the health of his son and started looking into the condition "overtraining". He had his son tested for "ferritin", an iron stage protein to help with low iron levels and anemia. "Overtraining is the downside of training, the trap that can derail an athletes success." Every athlete wants to be as fit as possible for their sport, so they begin to train as hard as t

The Calais Migrant Crisis

The featured article concerns the Calais crisis, where dozens of migrants unlocked and broke through a supposedly secure door into the Eurotunnel complex in order to migrate from France into Britain. The article describes how the migrants were believed "to have guessed the code by examining which numbers were the dirtiest on the security code lock system." It is believed that most of the migrants were intercepted by security staff and thereby interrupted in their attempt to escape France. The article states that Britain has committed £19 in extra funding for security measures since the crisis erupted in June. Furthermore the article describes how a Sudanese man named Abdul Rahman Haroun walked all the way to England through the tunnel where trains travel at more than 100 mph only 80 cm. from the side of the tunnel. Facts about the Calais border is featured at the bottom at the article, and it states that

Why The Great Gatsby is Valuable Literature

At first inspection F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel "The Great Gatsby' appears to be just another novel about post world war one America, but viewing it as such would only be scratching the surface of a much deeper, darker and depressing story. The novel, which was published April 10th of 1925, is now considered a piece of classic American literature and is seen as valued by many. However, to be considered as such it would have to meet the criteria of being able to explore and deal with important philosophical and moral topics of importance such as: love, class, wealth or death. These are but a few examples of what is considered 'valuable literature' would contain. I believe that Fitzgerald's novel does meet the criteria of 'Valuable literature' and will explain why I think this in this essay. Love One of the first themes we see in the book is love. There are many examples of love, or seemingly a lack of it in some relationships, such as Tom and Daisy and the way in which

Men in A Streetcar Named Desire and All New People

In "A Streetcar Named Desire," the men are seen as cruel and bitter through their harsh use of force to achieve what they want. Whereas in "All New People," the men are perceived as the victims of society rather than its actual driving force. In A Streetcar Named Desire, Stanley fulfils the duty of carrying the traditional patriarchal role of the breadwinner in the society of the 1950's era. He is represented as masculine through the use of his dominance in the household, control over Stella and being the prime influence in his social group of friends, as they see him as someone they want to be. However, this is contrasted in the modern day text of All New People, as Charlie conforms to the image of the 'new man' by emphasising the different types of masculine forms in society and how they are widely accepted. He expresses this through the use of showing emotion and being more considerate of other people's feelings, while being aware of his own. Tennessee Williams makes it promi

Advantages and Disadvantages of Technology

Technology today can be described as computers, cell phones, televisions and mostly anything electronic. The simplest tools were first used and soon became important for communication, transportation and even weapons. Technology is a part of our everyday lives and is even our whole life for some. Today's generation focuses upon the advantages of technology rather than disadvantages it can cause. This can cause society as a whole to be fascinated upon materialistic things rather than the relationships around us. Aymar Jean Christian, a doctoral student at the Annenberg School for Communications at the University of Pennsylvania, demonstrates in his article from Flow TV, what we must do to change that. He first argues that YouTube only benefits a small group of users and focuses upon views only. YouTube has become a place for both amateurs and big corporations to broadcast new and exciting things. These corporations have also put a damper on the use of YouTube as well. Christian argue

Untested, Unsafe and Unhealthy GMO Foods

"When you light a candle, you also cast a shadow." – Ursula K. Le Guin. No matter what good some people believe they are doing, everything seems to come with a consequence, and the question is whether or not the good overpowers the bad. Many experts argue that Genetically Modified foods are actually beneficial to, not only people, but animals, plants, and the world overall. Some experts even state that, not only are they beneficial, but that they also protect the environment and aid food productivity. Most farmers actually recommend GMO's because they are easier to grow, maintain, and tend to be more profitable; however, countless other experts have come to realize that GMO foods are untested, unsafe, and unhealthy. Studies indicate that these "acclaimed" GMO foods will not, feed the world, end hunger, increase the profit of farmers, or reduce the cost of farming. GMO's even have long term effects that haven't been adequately tested, and the effects could be catastrop

The Evolution of Pablo Picasso

Pablo Picasso arrived in Paris with great talent. Picasso wanted to create something different from the art of the high and powerful royalty. Schama says "Modern arts was modern because it turns its back on those grand standing histories painted for aristocrats and kings". "Portrait of King Philip IV of Spain" by Diego Velasquez depicts royalty and honor on a horse with pride in King Philip's eye. Pablo Picasso paints a related piece called "Boy Leading a Horse". It is of a naked boy leading a barebacked horse. This painting does not imply a hero like in "Portrait of King Philip IV of Spain". This is only one example of how Pablo Picasso went against the art norms. Around 1910 Picasso switches from beauty and history to something even more impressive. Picasso started painting in "a different vision from what things really are - cubism" (Schama). He felt that everything contained hard lines and images that can be put into boxes. In 1920s Paris, Pablo Pica

Accountability of Sensitive Items

Accountability of sensitive items is essential to job performance in all aspects. We not only rely on ourselves to get jobs done, but also the necessities that help us do a job correctly as well. It also plays a major part in personal/civilian life. Lack of accountability not only affects you, but also affects your subordinates, peers, and leaders. Although accountability of items has heavy effects on things you do, there are many simple things you can do to maintain control of your items that not only must be carried on you, but also things that are not continuously needed and are locked away. By maintaining control of sensitive items, you put yourself in an exceptional position to stand out above your peers and help yourself strive towards professional development. Learning to do this religiously will ensure timely execution of tasks, and will enhance job performance.  Positive results start when service members view accountability programs as helpful and progressive methods of assi

The Nuclear Accident in Chernobyl The day-care centre was located just two miles away from Chernobyl, a nuclear power plant in Pripyat, Ukraine. Today there is an off-limits area of 38 miles in diameter, officially called the "Zone of Alienation," surrounds the day-care centre, and the rest of the town, which had a population of roughly 50,000. The Chernobyl accident was the worst civilian disaster in the history of nuclear energy-and as scary as it seems, it could be repeated. Two of Chernobyl's four reactors remain in use, despite continuing safety problems. Severe cracks have been reported, yet thousands of people continue to live and work there. Roughly five hundred of them have been moved back into their old homes inside

Allegory - Animal Farm by George Orwell

George Orwell employs a variety of allegorical devices in his novel 'Animal Farm' including personification, naive narrative and irony to produce an allegory that voices his concerns over the outcome of the Russian revolution, and more broadly the dangers of unchecked power. Personification is used in Animal Farm to express the characteristics of the people and organizations that played an important in the Russian Revolution. The naive narrative technique gives the animals' perspective, showing us that they notice things but don't really get it or necessarily observe it. Orwell uses irony in the form of 'dramatic irony' to lead readers to draw conclusions and express concerns about the result of the Russian Revolution and the threats of unconstrained power. These factors make us all look back at what the true meaning of this book actually was. Orwell uses personification as an efficient way to express the nature of the targets of his critique in the time Animal Farm was w

Personal Freedom and National Security

A topic that is being debated throughout the United States is whether people should have their personal freedom or the government should take whatever means necessary to protect the country or national security. This debate first opened up after the terrorist attacks on September 11. What this act does is it allows the government access to your accounts made such as: phone records, emails, library records, social media etc. The side of Personal freedom makes more sense but people can see the reason why people would go with the side of national security. The main reason why people would choose the side of personal freedom is because people believe the government is not even attempting to protect the citizens and the people siding with national security are mainly afraid of terrorists. Personal freedom is in the people's constitutional rights and those are the rights given to the people ever since this cou

Short Story - The Future Innovations Fair

Jake, an ordinary student from Washington Middle School, was walking to school one morning when he saw a bulletin on the board about an upcoming science fair where the first place winner got a huge trophy, $100 in cash, and was distinguished at a banquet afterwards. Excited to tell his friends, he ran to his science class where his friends, Chuck and Brittany, were comparing answers from the previous night's math assignment. When he saw his friends, he heard Chuck's voice saying, "No, number 2 was 22 not 35." Brittany answered back in an irritated tone, "What are you talking about?? I'm not sure why our answers are in contrast of each other!" Jake interrupted their conversation exclaiming, "Guys, guys, let's participate in the Future Innovation Science Fair next week!!! The first place winner gets a huge trophy, cash money, and gets to be recognized at a fancy banquet by developing an invention useful in the future!" Both Chuck and Brittany looked at each other and said at the same time, "Let's do it." Th

Challenges Facing the Disabled in Zimbabwe

In Zimbabwe, people with disabilities (referred in this essay as PWDs) are among the most vulnerable group in the society. They face many obstacles in their struggle for equality such as failure to assess basic human rights i.e. health and education, barriers to equal participation in all aspects of life, attitudinal problems, decline of state support, negative perceptions at socio-cultural level, unequal employment opportunities, environmental challenges and so on. The writer of this essay would like to assess some of these challenges or obstacles that are faced by people with disabilities and suggest solutions; as the essay unfolds. Definition of Terms According to Disability Works Australia Limited (2013), a disability may be generally defined as a condition which may restrict a person's mental, sensory or mobility functions to undertake or perform a task. On the other hand, the Disability Services Commission (1993) defines the term 'disability' as any continuing condition
