Preparing for a Career by Derek Bok

The purpose of education is to inform upcoming generations the necessary skills to follow a career path and to obtain a meaningful position in society. However, education faces different obstacles dealing with changes and advancements over time. In his excerpt "Preparing for a Career," Derek Bok, former Dean of Harvard University, declares that universities are required to meet the demands of students and employers to build a curriculum that includes vocational training courses as well as promoting critical thinking through liberal arts education. Bok claims that universities have failed to fully integrate the two main components demanded by the students and employers successfully and for this reason, students' educational needs are not fully met. Bok explains that students tend to gravitate towards vocational courses, or pre-professional programs, because society perceives these courses to create competitive students when applying for a post-undergraduate education. These courses prepare students for a specific career and develop expertise in skills related to science and technol

The Columbia River Water Rights

What if the food you bought at the store cost significantly more than today? Imagine Joe, a farm worker in Washington. Now imagine Joe's farm shuts down because the environmentalists took down the dams leaving the farm without affordable transportation, water and electricity. Joe ends up on the streets, hungry, and unable to find a job because he doesn't have adequate education or training available to him. Farmers deserve water rights over the Columbia River because without them, the price of food will go up, people will go hungry, there will be fewer jobs. Without Columbia River water rights, the price of food will go up because we won't be able to transport goods as cheaply and efficiently as on the barges. "A bushel of wheat travels more efficiently and more cheaply on the Columbia-Snake System than on any river, highway, or rai

Effects of the Industrial Revolution

Revolutions are and will always be a turning point in history, whether it was the French Revolution, a political overthrow, or the Industrial Revolution, a new way of living. A revolution in its simplest terms is a series of forceful fights or events that lead to a new way of living or governing. In the 1800's a new way of living and working took place which was a major turning point in our society now; the Industrial Revolution. The Industrial Revolution brought about both positive and negative changes, such as the government reforms made, and the use of modern innovations, but, with this came along lots of negatives as well. The growth and advantages that came about in the Industrial Revolution wasn't worth the cost that society endured because of the negative working conditions, housing arrangements, and the people's lives they lived in general. The three main causes of the Industrial Revolution were the ideas of the Enlightenment and Scientific Revolution, England's government pol

Acting - Skills and Performance

The skills of an actor are used to bring the character to life on stage. It shows that the acting is more important than learning the lines and being on stage. The skills involve being able to engage the audience, having the ability to step into a new persona and create realism through their situation as well as having spatial awareness and expressive skills through their body and voice. Everyone knows that all good actors forget a line or two at some stage; the important part about this is the recovery. As they remain in character the audience is doesn't pick up on their forgotten lines, which can make the performance just as good. Knowing your lines is the most important thing to a performance it's where the creation of the character begins. By knowing your lines you are able to pick where the objective comes from in each beat from which the actor drives from. It is very critical to continuously rehearse lines as it tells the story, and is where the character is born from. As an ac

The Utopian State of The Giver

Throughout literary history the idea of a utopian society has been a prominent topic. Random House Unabridged Dictionary defines utopia as "an ideal place or state" or "any visionary system of political or social perfection," both of which have been used to define the state of utopia portrayed in literary works, however, after completing many of these works; it becomes extremely obvious that the eulogized "utopian society" is non existent and in most cases simply a misrepresented dystopia. The utopian society and its underlying problems are the base of literary works such as, Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, 1984 by George Orwell, and Lois Lowry's The Giver. Lowry's The Giver introduces readers to a world without pain, warfare, poverty, hunger, or terror. This may be what one would consider the basis of your typical utopian society, however, take away feelings such as love, diversity, the ability to make choices, and even the ability to see in color and

The Love Between Hester and Dimmesale

The Scarlet Letter, a novel written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, clearly shows the different ways a society and its members face sin. His work also shows how hidden sin can cause a man to perish, as well as the possibility of redemption. This is a story of Hester Prynne, who is the main character, and her acceptance of her sin. She does this publically and continually exhibits the characteristic of goodness and grace. Because of this, the letter takes on a new meaning, no longer does it mean "adultery,"now it means "able." And how Dimmesdale who has the same sin with Hester, endure the torment of his hidden sin. On the other hand, Hawthorne manifests Chillingworth's sin by describing the evil and envy which is deeply rooted in his mind. In a word, it is about a story of how people deal with their sin. While Hawthorne concentrates more on sin in this novel, the love between Dimmesdale and Hester plays a significant part in it as well. A general inspection of The Scarlet

Equal Opportiunity and Gender Discrimination

Any denial of equality and opportunity on the basis of gender is gender discrimination. Gender discrimination has been a part of the Indian society for a very long time and has affected both the genders, but more so over women. In the present time, gender discrimination has comparatively decreased with respect to earlier times but it still persists. It is also one of the biggest factors degrading country's development. This practice is not only followed in the backward areas of our country where people are not well versed but is highly common among our so called literate class of our society. They still think women are meant to stay at home, do the entire household and just bear children for them. Discrimination against women starts from their birth and continues throughout their lives. Gender discrimination can also be easily observed in our daily lives. An unborn child is aborted with the help of sex determination techniques. Some people consider girl child

Entrepreneurs and Finance Sources

Capital acquisition remains one of the most challenging and time-consuming activities for small ventures (Ang 1992). This section of the report aims to identify linkages between the literature on entrepreneurial sources of finance and Mr. Eswaran Chandra, the entrepreneur interviewed for the purpose of this report. Several studies have confirmed that the main cause of small firm failure is inadequacy in capitalization. During the interview, Mr.Chandra disclosed that Glide Agency was funded through his own equity, and this source of finance is called bootstrap financing. Firms experiencing difficulties in obtaining finance rely on bootstrap financing, which are alternative ways of acquiring capital without the use of traditional sources of finance such as debt and equity financing (Neely and Van-auken 2012). Bootstrapping is the best option to start up entrepreneurial firms and ensure it is in a viable position to consider debt financing from banks or equity financing from external in

Autism and I Am Sam

One never knows what it is like being a person with mental disabilities or intellectual disability. I also know that people out here today treat people with disabilities different. I know from personal experience that people with learning disabilities are treated different. I have worked with people with mental disorders for the last five years. I have had people come up to me and thank me for the job that I do, or I have had people ask me if I am crazy for doing the job that I do. Then you overhear the whispers of people saying" Thank GOD that is not my child". It breaks my heart to hear people talk like that. With that being said I chose to do my paper on the movie I AM SAM. I chose this movie because this is a wonderful movie that represents mental retardation or intellectual disability and a couple other things that I will mention later. Mental retardation means significantly sub average intellectual functioning paired with deficits in adaptive function such as self-car

Three Causes of the French Revolution

The French Revolution was a prominent revolution of its time. This revolution lasted for about ten years and completely altered the course of France's future. The results of the revolution resolved many of the causes that began the Revolution. Amongst the time of the English and American Revolutions, the French people were merely another oppressed group that rebelled against avaricious rulers. The French Revolution was caused by an assortment of factors. The causes varied in social, political, and economical aspects. Without the French society's actions, the Revolutions could not have been possible. A revolution began to boil in France's excessive population. At the end of the eighteenth century, France's population inconveniently rose. The rise, however, was mostly in the peasantry of the civilization. The increased vying of food and shelter caused rigorous competition between poverty stricken French citizens (Bosher 33). During this time there was also a decrease in grain productio

The United States After the Revolution

Thesis After fighting for their rights in the American Revolution many colonists had hoped for a political system that granted equal rights for everyone. However, in a society dominated by rich white males equal rights were only for the privileged, women, slaves, and the poor were excluded. The American political system was hanging by a thread, due to a weak central government and conflicting interests among the states looking to serve their own purposes. With a weak central government, conflicting interests, and with the privileged serving their own purposes, the time was not progressive and little changes were made. Many saw these weaknesses in the system and called for a stronger central government to help keep the nation they had created from falling apart. Then in 1787 the Constitution of the United States was passed creating a stronger central government to help the newly formed nation from collapsing. Civil In 1776 the Virginia Bill of Rights was passed granting rights that a

Peer Pressure in Adolescence: How Far Will They Go?

Introduction Many things can affect a student falling under the spell of peer pressure: types of friends, personality, trouble at home, parents, etc. To some extent, people can control the peer pressure in their lives. But what about adolescents? They are depicted as the type of people who, if asked if they would jump off a bridge because their friend did, would do it. The studies and articles I will present examine the effects of peer pressure under different circumstances and perspectives. I would like to see what peer pressure is exactly, and if it is does more harm or good. Do adolescences make their own decisions most of the time, or is it a reflection of their peers? What is Peer Pressure? First of all, it is important to have some background information on peer pressure. Some studies and articles presented peer pressure as something that was not harmful, even helpful, to adolescence. According to Bleyer (2014), "Peer influence is remarkably powerful all through our lives.

The Best Surprise Ever

Six years ago I got the best surprise news any one could ask for. I found out I was expecting a beautiful baby girl. For most women, this news comes by simply taking a home pregnancy test or a quick trip to the doctor and usually in the prime of their pregnancy. However, it wasn't so simple for me. It took me many tests, many trips to the doctors, many nights of uncertainty and confusion to finally get the answer I was hoping and longing for. It all started with subtle symptoms. I started having mild acid reflux, which was weird for me because I hadn't experienced that before. Every time I ate I felt a burning feeling in my esophagus. But being the stubborn person that I am, I just ignored it. Then, I began feeling nauseous after my meals. But yet again I ignored it, thinking it was related to the acid reflux. As time went on, I noticed I had gained a few pounds. That concerned me because I had actually stopped eating since I was always feeling sick. I finally built up the courage to g

Glenoak Soccer

I have a lot of goals for this upcoming season of soccer, personal goals and some for the whole team. One of my main goals for this year to improve my fundamentals as a soccer player. This pertains to improving my touch by a lot. I am not satisfied with my touch as of now and will do drills and work with a partner everyday I have the time to. I would also like to improve the technique of my shot. Growing up as a kid I was taught the wrong way to shoot a ball and I shoot it with my toe. I was taught this would increase the power and velocity of my shot. I will do this by taking shots after every practice and whenever the opportunity comes up. My other major goal for this season is to gain experience and relearn the game mentally. I quit playing soccer for two years and this killed my experience level compared to my teammates. Often in a game I find myself in a game where I don't know the right thing to do. By then end of the year I would also like to be playing on Jv-A at the very least. I

David Vetter - The Boy in the Bubble

After watching the film "The Boy In The Bubble" it was hard for me to decide whether it was the right choice or bad choice of David Vetter's parents to bring David into this world. I personally do not think it was right of David's parents to bring him to this world due to the fact that they had already experienced the loss of their previous son with the same disease, David was a child that was suffering, and lastly, the doctors didn't have any hope if there will be a cure to save him. Making these kind of decisions is hard, we have to think on how we can effect other people. David's mother has a rare genetic disease that could leave her sons without a functioning immune system called SCID. When David's mother got pregnant with her first baby boy she found out that her son was born with SCID, and died at 7 months. After the loss of her first boy she got pregnant

Strategies in Organizational Leadership

Introduction The situation that I chose to discuss in this assignment is the time when I was transferred to a new sister company to the one that I was working for, because of the poor performance that was being recorded at this company. My main role was to try and bring things in order so that the company would perform like the others. This being a new experience I was aware of the challenge that lay in front of me and I was ready to take up to the task. Some of the things that I was expected to address were the constant complaints from the workforce about several issues include the remuneration and compensation plan, working conditions among other many issues that affected the performance of the organization. I was also expected to address the issue of collaboration and working together to make the implementation of the strategic plan a success. The first step that I took was to make sure that I identified the people that were to help me establish the change process, and this involve

Dynamics of Web 2.0 in the Global Marketplace

Introduction The emerging need for technology today becomes more and more apparent with every day uses. With the rapidly evolving progression of technological advancements in today society the next step was to ultimately connect ourselves through networks between broad spectrums of various demographics. 'Web 2.0' has provided the next platform for interaction and connectivity. It has changed the means by which businesses communicate and has changed the perception in bottom line strategic aims and how business approach marketing schemes through targeting. This essay is a critical evaluation of the growing concept of web 2.0 and it's uses within today organisations and how it can be seen as both a motive and negative externality. Web 2.0 Uses and Application The qualitative movement away from Web 1.0 and it's limiting status, brought forward emerging issues that web 2.0 seemed to optimise and solve. Web 2.0 makes businesses more productive and more competitive (Palmer, 1997). From an

Movie Summary - Alien

After viewing Ridley Scott's, Alien, one may infer that, like many science fiction films that influence the film, tells the story of man versus nature. Where the nature of the alien is hunting them. Or it is man versus machine, where they are stuck in the space ship to ultimately survive and to kill and destroy the alien that is after them. Such a view, however, is far too simplistic because it does not account for the fact that there are many feminist themes that are in this film. This is very important because it shows that the 1979 film, Alien, is sophisticated in its treatment to women and it illustrates feminism by the treatment of Sigourney Weaver by the crew. This paper will show how feminism is portrayed in the film by examining the attuned anxieties of feminism. As the audience of the film view Alien, they should take into account the economic change that was occurring in the United States. At this point in the United States, there was a change in ideology with women. Women

Learning the Value of Trust

Staring at my battle buddy across from me with his heavy, cold steel rifle in hand, covered in dry, day old, dirt from marching all day, and listing to the sounds of the night fire on our way back to camp; exhausted, and dazed. I know I can trust private Ojeda because his core values inspire him to take lead on this mission, yet he still looks back at me with trust in is his eyes and ask "what's the grid location?" Because he knows he can trust me to get us home form any sticky situation. Trust is not a work that one throws around in the military because it is loyalty, personal courage, and duty that makes the word trust so powerful. One of the best times spent in my life was in the military; moreover, the values instilled in my military service. I've come across many different obstacles in my life that would lead me to disbelief in the idea of trust; however, I've also had the honor of serving on dozens of situations that yank me back to embrace the idea of trust; moreover;

Causes and Effects of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an anxiety disorder that develops usually in response to an overwhelmingly terrifying, often life-threatening event (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). It is debilitating in nature and it can stem from serious traumatic incidents such as actual or threatened death, serious injury or sexual violation (Keane & Barlow, 2002). When a person witnesses any psychologically traumatic event, it invokes a sense of intense fear and helplessness within them. This triggers post traumatic symptoms which at times may worsen so intensely, that PTSD is developed. Symptoms of PTSD are so devastating that they become problematic in a person's daily life. Bad dreams, fearful thoughts, flashbacks are some of the recurring symptoms. Flashbacks may consist of images, sounds, smell or even feelings. Dissociative reactions such as flashbacks could cause the sufferer to experience the same intense sense of physical feelings or emotions that occurred in the traumati

Neighbors by Tim Winton

Each country has its own identity, originating from its culture, way of life and history. When thinking about the identity of people from different countries, we often think about their stereotype and how that depicts them. Often, people are defined by the place that they are from, which is based on what people have heard and discovered themselves about that particular place. In 'Neighbors' by Tim Winton, we are introduced to a young woman and man, who have just moved into a new house, where they are surrounded with neighbors of different backgrounds. Through studying the different Stereotypes in this short story, different traditions and the different aspects of identity, it will become clear that identity is often linked to place. Tim Winton presents many ideas throughout the short story that define each of the different race people. The Macedonian and Polish are presented as having a very different culture and way of life to many other Australian families. Although Tim Winton doesn't reveal the nationality of the young couple, we can assume that they are of an Australian background due to their way of life. The Macedonian family are very close, loud,

The Fuel of American Obesity

"Since 1950, Obesity rates have increased by 214 percent" (Livestrong). Alarming rates like these need to be fixed. First we need to evaluate what is being done in school systems and find where we can increase food education. What we teach our children about food and how it is going to be a key concept in fixing the obesity epidemic because they are the future. Schools need to increase food education because children spend most of their time at schools. Also, society is changing so now parents are taking less time to teach them about food as we as good eating habits, but if kids received the education at school they are more likely to bring the information home to their parents. Until food education in schools increases obesity rates among our nation's youth will continue to rise. Obesity is a complex disorder involving an excessive amount of body fat. Obesity is measured, by Body Mass Index (BMI). Body Mass Index is calculated by pounds in kilograms divided by the square o

Britanny Maynard - Dying with Dignity

On New Year's Eve, 29 year old Britanny Maynard was diagnosed with brain cancer. Soon after she learned it was terminal, and she would only have a few months to live. Not wanting her fiancé and family to see her in pain for her final months, Brittany, as well as her family and fiancé decided to move to Oregon which is one of the only states that has legalized the Dying with Dignity Act and plans to take the prescription on November 1st, 2014 surrounded by her loved ones. This Act is highly controversial and each side presents a compelling argument and raises many questions concerning the difference between suicide and the right to die on one's own terms. Britanny addresses this choice saying, "All that I and people like me ask is that we be allowed to exert what little control we still have over our destinies, by choosing a death with dignity. Who has the right to tell me I don't deserve this choice?" Everyone should have the ability to control their life, so

Drugs as Predictors of Marital Dissolution

In the introduction of this article the author states some very interesting points. He explains it is common sense that alcohol and drug abuse lead to marital problems. In early studies of divorce, the husband's alcohol use tended to give a reason for the breakup of the marriage. It was found that drug and alcohol abuse are the third most common reason for divorce, which clearly made sense of why the rates of separation are higher among alcoholics, than the general population. Although it is not hard to see why excessive drinking leads to divorce, the author explains that it is hard to find support for this claim. A lot of genetic studies have found that there is a genetic risk for alcohol disorders which create negative personality factors. Negative personality factors lead to negative emotion which creates marital distress for the couple. The author is conducting the research to examine if alcohol, marijuana, and cigarette use are predictors of divorce among couples in their first marriage. I believe the author clearly describes the purpose of the experiment, but the hypothesis not as much. The

Stopping Community Gang Violence

It's hard to believe we can answer this question with a certain yes, but gang violence certainly cannot be completely stopped. In fact seems impossible to stop activities in gang violence from happening but there are solutions to minimize gang violence. Gang injunctions are court orders that attempt to address crime by prohibiting gang members and associates from things such as collaborating, public nuisance, and other criminal activities. Whether people are walking home late or wearing a certain color, many innocent people are harassed and become victims in a neighborhood that is occupied "turf" of an organized gang. Law enforcement implement Operation Ceasefire as a technique to stop the impossible mission of gang violence, however it doesn't address the root causes of why kids join gangs. There is too much room for reasons why kids join gangs such as education, economy, and racism aren't improved can lead to create gangs. How the economy is doing is a huge factor to the i
