Life Span Perspective Paper

Life Span Perspective Many individuals within someone point in their life do reflect back on earlier stages in that individual life and think about the many differences from how they use to be to how they are now. We often wonder why we have changed and when it takes to create the person we have become. Our changes without our life is examined through the science of human development. It examines why we change as time goes on. "Scientists examine the young, old, rich, poor, various ethnicities and cultures, as well as those of various sexual orientations. They seek to better understand the continuity and discontinuity, and the consistencies and transformations the human race goes through from the point of conception until death (Berger, 2011)". This is how we get a better understanding to who we are becoming. Views of the Life Span Perspective The life span perspective "holds many principles within human development. In our earlier school years Newton's Law of Motion taught us that for every action there is a reaction (Boyd & Bee, 2009)". During the study of human development we find th

1984 - Are We Being Watched?

In a world controlled by a higher power, constantly living in fear of doing or saying something wrong, thoughts can be incriminating. Even worse, any impure thoughts may make you disappear, constantly being watched, and observed without knowing. A Telescreen watching every facial expression and recording any abnormal body language and movement everywhere you go. Even in your home there is no escape. You are unable to get away or turn off the power of the Telescreen and "Big Brother". This novel is of a man's struggle against a totalitarian government that controls the ideas and thoughts of its citizens. The devices used by man come with many consequences that some people may not be too fond about, as expanded upon in George Orwell's novel 1984 . The Telescreens in the novel 1984 are an example of security cameras in current times, but the only difference is that the cameras aren't only in the people's houses, they are everywhere always watching everyone's actions. How Rap has Influenced Youth Culture

For the past few decades, hip hop and rap have had an enormous influence on youth culture. It affects how we dress, talk, what products we purchase and helps shape our identities. Many of the early rap artists such as 2 Pac and Dr. Dre released tracks about rebellion and creating a radical attitude and that ideology reflected in their music videos. Big baggy pants and shirts, snap backs and bandanas were covered all over rap videos and each particular item sent out a unique message to the impressionable youth. As well, the language they used in these videos gave us new meaning to old words and created a new type of language. Rap music have influenced youth culture in many ways but particularly in how they choose to dress. Since its birth over 35 years ago Rap has continued to thrive across America and now into the UK and now plays a large role in the music industry. Rap, is a cultural force that has gained steam in its ability to produce results when paired with existing clothing and

The Voyage of a Fortunate Soccer Player

Music has always played a significant part of my life. I played flute and piano throughout my high school years and was a member of the Junior Choir and Orchestra at McNeil High School, but we never know where life will take us. It took me years to realize that playing an instrument wasn't really my passion. I felt like something was missing in my life. Therefore, I pleaded with my parents to let me quit because I didn't want to waste any more time. They had encouraged me over the months to pick up the instruments again, but I always protested that I didn't have time, nor an ear for music. It was not long until my father took me to register for soccer at our church camp. Noticing myself as inexperienced in any type of sports, I decided that maybe I should try something new for once. Therefore, I was able to be part of my high school soccer team, McNeil Mavericks. Soon, I was proficient that I joined the discourse community of Mavericks Soccer by demonstrating my commitment as a team pl

Sula by Toni Morrison

Toni Morrison, one of the most remarkable African American authors and her novels remind readers that there is a past to remember. African American literature, has its origins in the 18th century, has helped African Americans to find their voice in a country where laws were set against them. The position of African Americans in the leading society of the United States of America has not been an easy one. African Americans needed to find a new identity in the New World and were considered an underclass for a long time. In literature, African American writers have been telling the story of their multifaceted experience and history. The mission to find their own voice was even more difficult for African American women who became targets of numerous insults, both during and after slavery, and were forced to be silent and to stand in the shadows for a long time. A lot of stereotypes existed about African American women, about their behavior, family organization, or their abilities. These st

The Seriousness of Climate Change

Global warming tends to be seen as a myth to many people in today's society. They see people who only think and care about the polar bears in the North Pole. However these people who care about climate change understand the affects it has on the earth. On the contrary these same people aren't taking action for this global crisis. For the truth is the problem at hand is only solvable with people who understand and are willing to take action. Often times people tend to steer clear of problems they do not understand. Also, this issue is not something that is easily seen or able to spot, which is a good reason as to why climate change and environmental problems need to be brought to the surface. Global warming deserves to be taken seriously because it could cause a lot of damage to this planet. When it comes to the topic of climate change, many Americans will readily agree that it's a worldwide problem to which needs help to solve. Where this argument usually ends, however, is on the que

Media-Effects Research Study

Method In carrying out research based on the media, such as the effects of mass media, the social media, and the various ways that they may be affected; various approaches have proven very instrumental. Some of the techniques that researchers have applied include; surveys, laboratory experiments, content analysis, observations, field experiments, and panels. The approach will mainly influence the outcome, though; all are the same. Either way, the main determinant of the success of a research is the reliability and accuracy of the findings of the research. For the purpose of this research, the researcher used the survey method, which entailed the use of questionnaires. The respondents were mainly students from the University of Liberty. The main reason for selecting the university was its background, which emphasizes on Christian morals and values. As such, the belief was that the students would take a very neutral ground as not

Why Social Networking Isn't Really Social

From children to adults, we are all using social network more and more as the evolution of smart technology is rapidly swelling. People saw convenience and enthusiasm in social networking that connects with friends, family and even strangers through Facebook or Twitter, and watch videos from YouTube that were posted 100,000miles away by clicking the mouse of desktop computers or even with a touch of the screen of a smartphone. Social networking and smart technologies so closely connected with each other that it could be impossible to live without them. Mark Zuckerburg, the founder of Facebook quoted, "Think about what people are doing on Facebook today. They're keeping up with their friends and family, but they're also building an image and identity for themselves, which in a sense is their brand. They're connecting with the audience that they want to connect to. It's almost a disadvantage if you're not on it now." I personally agree with Zuckerburg that social networking bro

Racial and Gender Discrimination in Jury Service

The case Strauder vs West Virginia, 100 US 303 (1880) was a Supreme Court case pertaining to discrimination of race in jury service. Former slave, Taylor Strauder, was convicted for murdering his wife. He was scheduled to die by hanging. At that time only white males were allowed to serve on juries. Since blacks were not allowed to serve on juries, he challenged the verdict of the West Virginia court. Strauder argued to the state court that a law that limited jury service to only white male citizens denied him equal protection of the law. His argument was unsuccessful in the state court. However, he appealed his case and the Supreme Court found that colored people are singled out and denied by a statute all right to participate as jurors  is practically a brand upon them, affixed by the law, an assertion of their inferiority which makes it unconstitutional under the Fourteenth Amendment equal protection clause. The Fourteenth Amendment prohibits states from denying any person within i

New Zealand and the Treaty of Waitangi

The Treaty of Waitangi is a significant event in New Zealand history that has caused many debates among historians due to the many differing perspectives towards the events that took place. The Treaty takes its name from the location in the Bay of Islands where the first signing occurred in 1840 on the 6th of February. Following the arrival of many missionaries stationed in New Zealand, increasing numbers of British migrants and labourers settled in New Zealand in the late 1830's by the lead of the New Zealand Company whose intention was to gain immense profit through extensive expansion. Upon the influx of these new British settlers proceeded a new lawlessness within New Zealand, and during the same time period there became signs of the French planning to annex New Zealand however the British Government were still tentative about acting to adjoin New Zealand as a colony. Nonetheless Britain decided annexing New Zealand would be fundamentally beneficial to the Crown and its economic i

Women in Management and Leadership Roles

Abstract There is a world-wide controversial issue regarding women in the workforce and their leadership roles. Women in leadership roles have been an ongoing issue for centuries. There are numerous factors that play a part in the struggle of women working and moving up into leadership and management positions for example: the old era versus the new, perceptions, difference in leadership styles and ignorance. Are women still viewed differently than men? Women today have more presence and are more professional than even men. In the United States alone there are women governors, senators, CEO's of large corporations and presidents of companies. As times change leaders are expected to evolve and more opportunity for women will be available. Gender restrictions have dramatically reduced, giving women the opportunity to enter into other leadership roles that were not previously available or considered possible. Transactional and Transformational leadership styles have contributed to the aw

Painting Overview - American Gothic

The artwork I choose is a famous painting called American Gothic. American Gothic was created in 1930 by Grant Wood, yet is still shown all around the world today. The painting is located in the Art Institute of Chicago. With the simplicity that comes across at first glance, there is always a deeper meaning. The whole painting itself contains a man and a woman, older in ages, who are standing in front of a house with a barn next to it. The man and woman take up most of the painting with just a glimpse of the house and barn in the back. They are standing fairly near one another making it appear like they are familiar with each other. American Gothic displays modern colors with no use of abstraction. The lines utilized are basic and easy to see, almost like it was a photograph. You can assume the time period by observing their clothing. The woman is dressed in modest black and brown attire while the man is cl

Biography of Eli Whitney

Throughout the history of the United States there have been a vast amount of significant inventors which have helped contribute to the success and triumph that this country has accomplished. One of these inventors would help change the course of history with an invention so innovative that it would later cause the death of millions of lives. That inventor is Eli Whitney, whom which could be considered the most important inventor of the nineteenth century. Then when Whitney was

Wouldn't Take Nothing for My Journey by Maya Angelou

Maya Angelou's book "Wouldn't Take Nothing for My Journey Now" resonates with my thoughts as a professional counsellor always. Counselling is a profession that sometimes gets difficult to understand. A successful counsellor is one who goes into a session confident and competent. One who listens and is not quick to judge others. The fundamental goal of a counsellor is to empower the client to make appropriate and rational decisions on how to deal life situations. Professional counsellor apply mental health, behavioral and cognitive intervention strategies to address effectively the personal growth and wellness of an individual (Herr & Cramer, 2008). Maya Angelou reflects on life teachings that help people to discover themselves and rejuvenate their energy when faced with issues in their life. In her book she discusses her faith in God, value

Mothers and Daughters in Literature

In Amy Tan's "Two Kinds," Jing-mei struggles with her mother's high expectations to be a youth prodigy through constantly bucking and opposing her mother's wishes. Along a similar path, the mother in Jamaica Kincaid's "Girl" holds practically the same high standards as the mother in "Two Kinds." In the short story "Two Kinds", it is made clear early in the story that the family immigrated to America from China to give their children a shot at the American dream. As Tan indicates with the quote from the mother saying "You could open a restaurant. You could work for the government and get good retirement. You could buy a house with almost no money down. You could become rich. You could become instantly famous" (305). This quote tells me right away that the mother's intentions are very pure even though she conveys it in a different way than most mothers would. A Chinese Shirley Temple. This was the first thing that the mother thought Jin

Preventing the Spread of Ebola

What is Ebola? Ebola is a rare but deadly virus that causes severe internal bleeding and outside the body. As the virus spreads through the body, it damages the immune system and organs. Ultimately, it causes levels of blood-clotting cells to drop. This leads to severe uncontrollable bleeding. According to The Center for Disease Control and Prevention, said that in a worst-case scenario, Ebola cases could reach 1.4 million people in four months (qtd. In Grady 10). But if that would be the case, what could the international community do to prevent future Ebola outbreaks? They could possibly not let people from other countries enter the United States through airports, they may help scientists create a drug that could fight or treat the virus, and they could help people with a weak immune system get stronger. For these reasons, Ebola could be preventable. The first reason Ebola could be preventable is by not letting immigrants enter

D.H. Lawrence - Lady Chatterley's Lover

A relationship between a man and a woman can last long when they both can reach the integrity between love and sexual pleasure. Lady Chatterley's Lover, by D.H. Lawrence is an amazingly well-crafted piece of fiction. The fabric of this work is carefully weaved; everything from the characterization, sexual scenes and settings to the vocabulary are chosen with care to convey the author's vision about the harmony of love and sensuality. It would seem that Lawrence felt there is a definite division between the intellectual and the sensual. A person could only be on one side of that; making the choice to embrace one or the other. Lawrence perpetuated the idea that people should embrace the sensualities of life. With the subtle way of using language, many sexual scenes in Lawrence's novel are far from what is called pornography. Through sexual adventure in Connie's affairs, D.H Lawrence covered his novel with the human being desire theme which is the hunting for the harmony of mind and body

Amazon Warehouse - Business Narrative

Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon, founded this organization with one goal in mind. This goal is the commitment to sell more items at a lower cost, rather than a few items at a higher cost, while simultaneously attempting to cut operating costs. One look at Amazon's warehouse is all you need to see in order to know that they are truly committed to achieving that goal. The utilization of random storage helps workers to manage the massive amounts of inventory stored at the warehouse. They also utilize a process that can keep up with the massive demand from consumers and makes the whole process run smoothly to ensure that everyone gets what they want in a timely manner. The entirety of the warehouse process is extremely efficient. Upon arrival at the warehouse, the product is scanned and placed in one of the numerous storage cubes. Only now will the item appear available to purchase online. The location of each item in the warehouse is not stored with similar products, it is instead placed in

The Unavoidable American Revolutionary War

The North America Continent was not the main battlefield of the Seven Years' War, yet the aftermath of the war had significantly altered the situation in the British colonies on the continent. When the war was finally brought to an end, the French Colonial Empire had ceded Quebec, the former New France, to Britain; so the British Empire finally established its hegemony in North America. Nonetheless, tremendous public debt had forced Britain to increase the revenue by expanding the taxation in its colonies. This alteration inflamed public feelings in the Thirteen Colonies. Regardless of the close ties of people and culture with Britain, the colonists started the American Revolutionary War. They also invited the habitants, of which the major population in Quebec was composed, to stage a rebellion with them. An all-out independent war spreading over the entire North American Continent seemed predictable because the habitants, early French settlers in Canada, were from Britain's archenemy

The American Gilded Age

By the end of the 1800s, many problems in America as a result from rapid industrialization, immigration, and urbanization. One of the problem that came from the industrialization was the factory work. Most workers worked for 12 hours a day, 6 days a week. They were paid by the numbers of finished products, not the time they worked. For example, they just got a few cents for a garment or a number of cigars. This is a system called piecework which means people who worked the fastest and made the most amounts of products earned the most money. They were not only working for long time but under harsh and poor conditions in a place called sweatshop. Another problem was monopoly, which means to control all phases of steel industry. In order to do monopoly, a business needed to bought its competitors out or took them out of business. The purpose of monopoly is when consumers got no places to turn for a given product, the company had the right to

The Jewish People and the Holocaust

The extermination of the Jewish people was to a large extent the singular goal of the Holocaust. This is proven by the definition of the Holocaust, rhetoric of the Nazi leaders and by their continued assessment of the Jewish people survival even before they were singled out. It is also proved by the fact that the Jewish people were targeted, the systematic extermination of the Jewish people and the scale and proportion of the Jewish extermination. The meaning of the word Holocaust is large-scale destruction, especially by fire. The meaning of the word helps to argue both ways; the large scale destruction the Jewish race faced implies that the Holocaust was directed towards the Jewish. Along with this meaning the word also has a second meaning of which is related to the Jewish race, when said the word brings the knowledge of what happened to the Jews. Although the Jewish suffered greatly other smaller groups also were affected. These groups were people who were disabled, homosexual, not

Saving Earth and Going Green

There has been big talk about saving earth or going green, over the past few years. The main purpose is to preserve earth's natural raw resources because we are running out of natural resources including gas, oil, and coal. There are energy efficient products being promoted such as battery operated cars, appliances, light bulbs and even homes. The problem is many energy efficient items are so expensive, that not everyone can afford to pay for an energy efficient car or an energy efficient home, but there are still many ways to help save the planet earth. Think about what is in that trash bag before you throw it away. Saving the trash could possibly mean saving the earth. If consumers could do something with the trash they discard the manufacturer would not have to use raw natural materials to make products. The average person generates four pounds of trash per day (Brown Par 2 ). If consumers could recycle some of that trash they could reduce landfills. Landfills are a place where yo

My Personal Story As A LGBT Citizen

As I decided to tell my personal story, I was up and down whether it was right or wrong. Maybe this story is not a kind of attractive or special story, but I hope people would understand and sympathize after they had read this; then they would look at LGBT citizens in a different and natural way as other species in the nature. Ghose stated: "Humans aren't the only species that has same-sex pairings"(Ghose). This story is about my life as a LGBT citizen, and all of the suffering that I have experienced in order to become myself today. When I think back of my early childhood, my health was not good, so I was not allowed to play soccer or basketball as other boys. However, I myself also didn't feel interested in those useless and dangerous games. I liked to play at girly, flexibility games such as rope skipping or dolls with girls. Some may see this as normall, but at that time, kids didn't think like that, especially my classmates; they laughed, made fun, and spoke ill of me. They were
