Federal Mandates on Gay MarriageRecently homosexuals have been trying to change the proper and current meaning of marriage into one of their own, allowing people of the same sex to get married. Currently there is no federal mandate allowing same sex marriage, however 17 states have already given in to the demand for same sex marriage and have happily allowed unnatural behavior to continue. Though many people see no problem with same sex marriage, there should not be a federal mandate allowing it because same sex marriage makes churches practice/perform undesired rituals that go against their beliefs, and it changes the meaning of the valued ritual of marriage. Freedom of religion was a founding principle of our country and is guaranteed by the constitution. There is a direct conflict between the majority who are religious and believe that marriage is ordained by god and is between a man and a woman, and the minority who want same sex marriage. The issue can not be debated in a vacuum, ignoring freedom of religion. M |

The Internet and DemocracyThe internet is a technology used worldwide and is not only essential to the lives of twenty-first century citizens, but it is an extremely powerful and influential tool. The internet is used to process multiple daily transactions from business correspondence, overseas purchases and online banking. As the internet becomes an increasingly integral component to everyday life, the question of implementing online voting has been widely discussed and debated as demonstrated in articles "Why Internet voting is bad for democracy" by Froma Harrop and "Internet Voting can Reform Democracy" by Nobuo Ikeda. These articles represent different views about the relationship between internet voting and democracy. The Internet continues to influence and evolve society and as a result political discussion on internet voting is necessary as the implementation of internet voting will have an impact on democracy. With internet voting as a subject of debate in today's society, it is evident that society is |

A Special Memory - The BeachI decided to go to the beach on last summer. I was very excited to enjoy this vacation after long year of hard work and study. In this trip, I was enjoying the wondrous beauty of the mother earth. This is one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Perhaps, the most beautiful time of the beaches is in the dawn. When I was driving on the way to the beach, I felt the salty breeze that carried from the aroma of the sea. The beautiful glowing sun rise slowly over me, hovering like a ripe orange radiate light and breathed life into the sea, bringing a gleaming light to the beautiful sand and sea. Everything likes being illuminated. It was vibrant long after a night of sleep. A radiant pink streak on the horizon, growing until a road paving petal pink, radiant from there to us. Sea surface sparkling pink dress, as far as faded. Looking directly up at it, I closed my eyes tightly as the intense bright whiteness of the sun blinds me. Then, like a miracle, the round, big and red sun was rising out of the sea, majestic views on every side. Everything at sea, on |

The Comforts of My Grandparent's HomeMy favorite place is my grandparent's home, because it is a place of comfort, security, and yet also a place to let loose and have fun. Their home has something special about it that sets it apart from the rest. It is a home away from home. Regardless of any life situations, their home is still a place of laughter and cheerful people. My grandparent's home is a place of many family gatherings. From holidays to our routine Sunday dinners, their home is always packed full of people, laughter, and cheer. Uncle Larry's deep, signature laugh can be heard from miles. Everyone sitting around the dinner table can be heard making jokes about one another, telling the newest joke they heard, or being quiet hoping they do not get the next joke put onto them. Many laughs, jokes, a |

Walter White and Breaking BadWho could imagine that a show detailing the life of a chemistry teacher who turned to a life of drugs and crime become one of the greatest television dramas? What made this story so appealing to those who watched? Consider this quote, "Who are you talking to right now? Who is it you think you see? Do you know how much I make a year? I mean, even if I told you, you wouldn't believe it. Do you know what would happen if I suddenly decided to stop going into work? A business big enough that it could be listed on the NASDAQ goes belly up. Disappears! It ceases to exist without me." ("Cornered.")Breaking Bad these comments were made by Walter White and he was the creation of director Vince Gilligan. The drama was Breaking Bad and it ran from 2008 to 2013. The quote illustrates the effect of power on an individual and ultimately what corruption it will lead to for that individual to remain in power. The topic of power and corruption is certainly relevant in our world toda |

Citizen Rights and Gun Control LawsAmerica has always prided itself on being the land of the free. Our national Constitution and Bill of Rights have ensured that the people of America maintain their basic rights, and more. Nevertheless, many of the rights guaranteed in these historic documents are often the subject of heated debate. The right to be free from unreasonable searches and seizures under the Fourth Amendment, the Fifth Amendment's guarantee against self-incrimination, the First Amendment's protection of speech and petitioning activity, all of these issues has been subject to contentious arguments in courts of law and the courts of public opinion. Of late, however, the most lengthy, argumentative and noisy debates have focused on gun control. Some people think that guns should be more harshly regulated, while others believe that they should be more easily available. Gun control lobbyists and activists claim that firearms only cause pain and destruction, but they couldn't be more wrong. In this country, fire |

A Perfect Bond DestroyedI've never understood how a mother's bond with a stranger could be stronger than the bond she has with her own daughter. A bond is a soul-to-soul connection with someone you love. A bond is developed over time, so in order to have a successful bond, one must have patience. A bond is an imprint of unconditional love left on one's soul. A bond is divine and delicate, and it should not be taken for granted. Bonding is important because it adds value and a sense of respect to your life. It also gives you an idea of what nonjudgmental and unconditional love is. A parent's bond with her child should be strong and unbreakable. This shows the child that the parent loves and cares for her, so that the child feels safe. My mother divorced my father when I was two years old. Two years later, shortly after my fourth birthday, she married a man named Joey. Immediately after the divorce of my parents, the safe matrix I had once known was destroyed. The unbreakable bond I once had with my mother was |

Understanding the Challenges of ELL AssessmentThe articles read for this paper outlined many of the challenges of ELLs and assessments. My understanding of the challenges of ELLs and assessments begins in the classroom. In the classroom, teachers have to assess ELLs on many skills. These skills are related to listening, language, speaking, and writing. As teachers, we know that ELLs progress at different rates among the language sub-skills and these are not always equally proficient. ELLs have various experiences learning styles and real-life experiences. In reflection, I think about the ELLS proficiency in the English language to actually listen and speak. If they are new to the United States, they may not be able to understand any language at all. This could create problems in learning conversation an |

The Desolation of the Pop BottleThe average pop bottle to most people seems very insignificant, but we rarely think of the adverse effects that they have on our life. The vast majority of pop bottle are made of a plastic material called Polyethylene Terephthalate, or PET. Out of the 50 states in the United States, only 10 of these states requires a bottle deposit. It is in strong opinion that the other 40 states enact a bottle deposit law of some kind for many reasons. These reasons include, the increase to recycling, cleaner environment, increase income of the poor, and the increase of jobs. Recycling today is becoming more and more important. As said by the University of Alaska Fairbanks, "Recycling is an important part of a sustainable lifestyle and in preserving the resources used by society." Recycling of plastics has become important because of the fact that plastics are made from petroleum, which is a non-renewable resource. With a bottle deposit, the amount of plastic we recycled has gone up quite |

The New England and Chesapeake ColoniesAlthough they were settled mostly by people of English origin, the New England and Chesapeake regions developed very differently due to social, economic and political factors. New England developed into religious based communities that relied economically on trading and a merchant class. The colonies in the Chesapeake region developed into societies that lacked communal values and consisted of scattered plantations owned by individuals interested in their own success. The large differences between these regions would become a problem later in American history, when the different parts of developing America would face each other in the Civil War. The kind of people that settled in each region effected the New England and Chesapeake colonies social development because it provided a basis of the values each region would possess. John Winthrop explained to incoming settlers of the Massachusetts Bay Colony that they would be a model of future settlements and must act as a "city upon a |

Global Warming and the EnvironmentGlobal warming is a major concern to our environment. We should be doing more to help the environment instead of using things that are bad for it like fossil fuels and greenhouse gases. Some of the signs of global warming are higher temperatures, melting glaciers, more droughts, and rising sea levels. With the rise of the Earths surface temperatures we will start to see effects like our rainfall patterns are going to change, the ice caps and glaciers are going to start to melt, the oceans will start to rise because of the ice caps melting, there will be more coastal erosion. It also can also make some infectious diseases go more places than it could go before. What greenhouse gases do is they trap heat in the atmosphere. So the more greenhouse gases are in the air, the more heat is trapped on earth. Emissions from greenhouse gases have increased by 5% from 1990 to 2012. The thing that gives of the most greenhouse emission is electric generation. After that is transportation. Carbon D |

The Geranium and My LeanneObsession is the most destructive human emotion; it may well be a driving force of one of the biggest issue of the world- that being domestic abuse. Abusive mindset may have a detrimental consequence on both the victims of abuse, and the abusers themselves. Abusive behaviors can lead to people deteriorating mentally, and emotionally. Abusive behaviours can also lead someone into thinking less of themselves. By looking at specific instances of domestic abuse, Patricia Grace has taught the 20th century reader what a possible root of this type of abuse is and what the effects it may have on both the abusers and the abused. Grace displays her condemnation to abuse through her short stories. This is exemplified in her short stories The Geranium and My Leanne. In the stories Grace employs narrative viewpoint, dialogue, symbolism and narrative structure. Grace explores two similar instances of domestic abuse in the two short stories. Grace uses the characters Marney (The Geranium) and Dean |

Analysis of The Sun Also RisesErnest Hemingway's novel, The Sun Also Rises, follows Jake Barnes and Lady Brett Ashley through their adventures from Paris, France to Pamplona, Spain for the annual bull-running festival. Hemingway writes of the Lost Generation during post-World War I life. This is a time where parties were bigger, morals were looser, and alcohol was cheaper. Jake, Brett, and their companions take on the fiestas throughout the novel, while Hemingway carefully uses symbolism to relate their actions to the morals of the Lost Generation. An analysis of symbolism that Hemingway uses in The Sun Also Rises reveals the depth of the novel, while expressing the age of bankruptcy, illusions, and unrealized love. Throughout the majority of Book II, Jake and his companions parade through Pamplona to watch the running of the bulls. The bulls and the act of bull-fighting are very symbolic to the Lost Generation. Bulls represent passion, freedom, and energy. Bull-fighting represents seduction, sex, and manipulation |

Simple Rules Lead to Drastic Benefits and ChangeHaving a healthy lifestyle requires plenty of motivation and determination because of the multiple sacrifices that may occur during this process and overwhelming feelings that you are going to have to get over in order to become a healthy individual. Through the article "Unhappy Meals", author Michael Pollan reveals many simple, yet equally important principles of healthy eating. Pollan provides nine rules on how we should change our eating habits and, as a result, become healthy people. As a part of his nine rules, he advises that we should eat food that we know of and are familiar with, and to consume mostly plants and home cooked meals (Pollan). Pollan informs his audience that following these rules will provide them with a healthy lifestyle. I do comply with most of Michael Pollan's principals, especially with eating healthy plants, home cooked meals, and avoiding food products that contain ingredients that are unfamiliar to me. For example, most of my meals are cultural |

Colonial Virginia and Colonial MarylandIn 1607, one hundred and four men landed in Virginia traveling aboard the Susan Constant, Godspeed and Discovery. Later in the 1600s, in 1634, about two hundred emigrants settled in a colony and named this colony Maryland. Both colonies were formed in a part of the "New World". With this being said, the women of both colonies played roles of servants that depended on men, the English in Virginia did not respect the Indians as much as the French in Maryland, and lastly, how indentured servants and slaves were being treated and used had a large impact on the development of Colonial Virginia and Colonial Maryland. Colonial women in Maryland and Virginia were very similar. They were very scarce and the women that were there were protected. Most women who came to either Maryland or Virginia were typically indentured servants or the wives of the men. However, Maryland women were portrayed as having very frail bodies. Women in this colony were constantly being stated as having fra |

Standard Testing - No Child Left BehindAs a fragment of the American Education system assimilates testing has been around since the mid-1800s. China used these tests in order to test the knowledge of citizens who were applying for leadership job positions. The ACT and SAT which were found by the College Board a profitless group of universities at the time are still two of the most popular and important standardized test today because they a |

How to Be a Successful StudentWhat do you imagine when you think to be an international student in the U.S. before you come there? Many students have wrong imagination of studying abroad. They think they can become successful there without any effort. Unfortunately, the first time in the U.S. is difficult and overwhelming, and they do not know what to do to be successful. Based on my own experience, there are three things that I recommend to new students to be successful in the U.S.. The first thing that they should do to be successful is not to be afraid to communicate with people. When I came to the U.S., I was alone and lonely. I had barrier to conversing in a new language, so I was afraid to speak incorrectly. I studied at school. Though there were many different students, it was hard for me to make new friends. I thought no one wanted to be a friend of mine because they did not talk to me f |

Opposing Views on AbortionAbortion is a very biased topic that many people shy away from because there will always be a difference of opinions due to the severity of this issue. Abortion is defined as the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy, most often performed during the first 28 weeks of pregnancy. This is such a hot topic because there is an innocent being and terrified mother hanging in the balance of the madness. The biggest question that separates the world when in it comes to abortion is, does life begin at conception or after birth? Roe v Wade is the court case that made the issue Pro Life or Pro-Choice and with this case it brings the question of how does one truly decide. Pro-Choice means that one supports the woman in her decision to choose simply because it is her body. Pro-Choice supporters view the unborn baby as an undeveloped human being that has not yet taken its 1st breath. Roe v Wade is the court case that would change the way women view their options when it comes to their bodies |
