The History of Steam Engines

What do Indian sugar processors and small scale CHP systems in the U.S. have in common? They are ideal applications for modern reciprocating steam engines. While the technology is well established in the sugarcane business, it is only beginning to be considered as part of a CHP package. This paper discusses the modern use of steam engines and shows how adoption of this technology can allow increased energy efficiency in a variety of industrial processes. The history of the industrial revolution includes a large chapter on the invention, introduction, and adoption of steam engines for all kinds of industrial applications and electric power. As time went on, the steam engine gaveway to other prime movers and industry switched to electric motors and gas engine powered equipment. Power plants, still using steam, moved to steam turbines. Until recently, the existence of a reciprocating steam engine in an industrial plant was usually vestigial, with the device being kept around as an oddi

Ashley Madison - A Threat to Married Life

"I wish I had the powers to ignore you like you ignore me". This is a very simple yet a very powerful quote which defines the lives of many couples. After a certain point of married life, the partners are not able to spend much time with one another and express oneself clearly thereby leading to differences in their relationship. Just like the matrimonial sites, we now have a 'married couple dating' site called 'Ashley Madison'. Ashley Madison is a Canada based online dating service marketed to people who are married. This site provides a perfect platform for married couples to have illicit relationship with any random person they desire. This website also has a very interesting tagline stating 'Life is short, Lets have an affair' which in every sense is controversial and not acceptable in our Ind

The Denial of Genocide in Turkey

The eighth stage of genocide is genocide denial, which most likely proves that the genocide occurred. It is comparable to a double massacre as it works to extinguish the memory of the event. It can be characterized in different manners; the most common are: it was self-defense, the killing was unintentional, there was no genocide. (Gregory Stanton) Denial has various intentions: ideological, strategic, socio-political but the consequences for the targeted individuals are always catastrophic. (Prof. dr. Smail Čekić) The Turkish government attempted to deny the Armenian genocide by trying to change the nature of the genocide and manipulating the death toll due to their fear of financial and physical reimbursement, their influence on Hitler, and the Turk's psychological instability. Armenian genocide refers to the first genocide of the 20th century committed by the Ottoman Empire, under the rule of the Young Turks. The Ottoman Empire embarked upon the systematic slaughter of its civ

Overview of Savant Syndrome

Savant syndrome is an uncommon disorder which involves a person that has mental illnesses or disabilities that also has an autistic condition. In having this serious condition, they are able to obtain certain wonderful qualities on an individual scale. Savant skills rely on huge memory stores and one in about ten people with the syndrome have extraordinary degrees that involve an amazing skill. In choosing to investigate savant syndrome I wanted to discover why people's memory stores are so remarkably big and if they have deficiencies in any other areas of their body's process like social skills (Treffert.).To have Autism means the brain doesn't function like the average human brain due to nerve cells being dysfunctional. This is a serious disability and is found in one of every five hundred people. The condition of autistic savants, means the aptitude and cleverness levels are lowered in a person. Therefore social contact abilities with people and messages through communication (or

External Marketing Environments

A marketing environment can be anything and everything an organisation must take into consideration when it is presented with a need of developing and selling any product in the market. These maybe internal environments or external. As for the marketing professionals, one must be able to acknowledge these environments and have a clear understanding of each of them in order to ensure there is a successful movement of the goods from the time of production to the time these goods reach the customers so as to generate profits as well as good will and thus customer preference and brand building. The external environment comprises of forces that cannot be in control of the organisation or the company. Elliott, G et al. (2008, p.11) say that these are forces that have an impact on the business and if understood and taken into consideration the impact can be positive. The uncontrollable forces in the external environment are: Competition Government policies Natural forces Social and cultural

A Response to the Medication of Children with ADHD

American high school and college students are currently facing an epidemic like no other. Prescription drug use by these students is becoming part of their daily routine. The use of psycho-stimulant medications, such as Ritalin and Adderall, to heighten their academic performance tempts almost every one of these students daily. Before I continue with this discussion about the overmedication of young students in America, I want to make it clear that it is not my intention to debate the reality, validity, or treatment of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Melika Loe's article, "The Prescription of a New Generation", makes this problem of overmedication very apparent. These young students have been socialized in a culture of instant gratification. When they have a question that needs answering, they send a text message, an email, or make a quick phone call to get it. If someone does not feel well, then they go to see a doctor who will give them a prescription to fi

Building a Mentally Healthy Workplace

Mentally healthy workplaces should be optimistic and beneficial, and maximize the skills and talents of its employees to be productive. Nurses who are mentally healthy and well supported by their team, leaders and organization have been proven to be more productive and less likely to take absenteeism. In the recent years, there has been a growing awareness on the psychosocial work setting of health care workers – amongst of which are nurses (Golubic et al. 2009). Nurses are prone to risk factors and become victims of occupational mental health problems on individual, team and organizational levels. This essay would breakdown the detrimental effects of unhealthy working environment to nurses' mental well--being and output and on the other hand, promotion of personal resilience and promoting protective factors at an organizational level in building resilience as coping strategies in promoting and maintaining a mentally healthy workplace. It has been proven that mental stress

America, Government and Respect of Citizens

Discrimination is the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people or things, especially on the grounds of race, age, or sex. Elizabeth Cady Stanton (1815-1902), the president of the National Woman Suffrage Association for twenty years, wrote the Declaration of Sentiments as a call to arms for female equality. Stanton wrote this exquisite declaration during the famous Seneca Falls Convention in July 1848. Another famous speaker is, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929-1968). Dr. King led the Civil Rights Movement in the United States from the mid-1950s until his death by assassination in 1968. Before his tragic death, he spoke one of the most important speeches in history, the I Have a Dream speech. In this speech, Dr. King spoke on how his dream was for everyone to be one instead of categorized as two different beings; he wanted black and white children to be able to hold hands and call each other friend, and most importantly, for people to be judged by their charact

Advertising - Class and Cars

Throughout history, automobile advertisements have been a staple in American culture. Beginning with the first advertisement for the Winton Motor Carriage in Scientific American: "Dispense with a horse and save the expense, care and anxiety of keeping it," car advertisements have been used to attract different populations of consumers. Looking back, many members in upper class society switched from the laborious horse drawn carriage, to a more sophisticated alternative around the early 1900's. This trend began in the late 1800's when Alexander Winton sold over 100 automobiles as a result of effective advertisements placed through various media outlets including but not limited to Scientific American, The Horseless Age and Cleveland's well known major newspaper The Plain Dealer. It wasn't until 10 years later that advertisements for the more affordable Model-T began to surface that appealed to the middle class. Today, there are countless car advertisements that appeal to the various c

The Imprisonment of Mary, Queen of Scots

A significant historical event that occurred was the imprisonment of Mary, Queen of Scots, in England, after the 1569 York Conference. It was significant because it was the turning point in the relationship between two female monarchs, Elizabeth I and Mary, Queen of Scots. Within its various causes and consequences, it is evident that the political factor is predominant over all – including international and religious factors. However, it must be noted that political factors cannot be seen in isolation. Its causes include the 1559 Religious Settlement, Mary's return to Scotland and claim to the English throne, and Mary's abdication and escape to England. Mary's escape to England was the most important cause, as it was the immediate catalyst that changed her relationship with Elizabeth – it made her an instant threat. The event led to several consequences that impacted many people, including the 1569 Northern Rebellion, the heightened Catholic threat in the 1570s and 1580s,

After reading the various College Success strategies, as well as looking over the modules, I have to decided to take a tad different approach in regards to my self improvement as a student athlete. An Overview of Carbon Dating

Radiocarbon dating (also referred to as carbon dating or carbon-14 dating) is a method for determining the age of an object containing organic material by using the properties of radiocarbon (14C), a radioactive isotope of carbon. The method was developed by Willard Libby in the late 1940s and soon became a standard tool for archaeologists. Libby received the Nobel Prize for his work in 1960. The radiocarbon dating method is based on the fact that radiocarbon is constantly being created in the atmosphere by the interaction of cosmic rays with atmospheric nitrogen. The resulting radiocarbon combines with atmospheric oxygen to form radioactive carbon dioxide, which is incorporated into plants by photosynthesis; animals then acquire 14C by eating the plants. When the animal or plant dies, it stops exchanging carbon with its environment, and from that point onwards the

My Struggle with Grave's Disease

I had been very sick the last two years. Grave's disease had taken over my life, just as alcohol takes over an alcoholic. This disease had eaten away at my immune system and left me feeling and looking like a train wreck. Thanks to this disease my olive skin was now grey like ash. My sickly body weighed only 27kilograms, which is under the average weight for a 13 year old. The hair on my head used to flow like a long river but now was short and thin, sometimes falling to the floor like droplets. Eyes that used to be small and beautiful were now so enlarged they looked as if they were going to pop out of my head. Most horrible of all was the large scar that crawled up my neck like a snake on a tree branch. I had learned to live with these changes to my body, but other people had not always been so accepting. So on this beautiful, enchanted day I headed for school and readied myself for the day's events. I was used to the daily taunts and teasing from everyone, but two girls in parti

Leadership Theories in Healthcare

Leadership or as I have titled my paper "LDRSHIP" is the Army acronym for what they want a leader to be Loyal Duty Respect Selfless Service Honor Integrity and lastly Personal Courage. I have lived by these seven values most of my adult life. "Leadership is a process of influencing people by providing purpose direction and motivations to accomplish the mission and improve the organization (ADP 6-22)." Purpose gives followers a reason to achieve an outcome. Direction giving clear direction to prioritize tasking, and assigning responsibility so not just one person is not doing everything understanding what is standard. Lastly motivation supplies the will to do what is needed to accomplish the goal. To sum this all up the ability to inspire and empower others. We as a class were asked to take some assessments to determine what types of leaders we were I took several different ones and the one that seemed more appropriate was the one that states I'm a creative leade

Lucky Strike for the Marlboro Man

It is hard to think about smoking and not immediately associate the act with gender and sexuality. Images of Audrey Hepburn smoking with a cigarette holder pressed against her lips come to mind and are linked to her femininity and beauty. Advertisements have portrayed smoking as something that is intrinsically connected not only to femininity, but to hyper-masculinity as well, particularly in the form of the Marlboro Man, who was ruggedly handsome and many American men tried to emulate his cowboy-demeanor by smoking cigarettes just as he did. Whether or not smoking ads are less prevalent than they once were, they still depict gender norms and sexuality through the shroud of smoke. In order to fully understand the sexualized nature and gender-targeted cigarette campaigns, one must analyze Phillip Morris' use of the Marlboro Man in their ads. Phillip Morris exploited the tremendous impact the Marlboro Man had on Americans (particularly men) and used this to redefine what it meant to b

Yellow Peril in World War II

FDR points fingers full of fear at the Japanese Americans in the US. Franklin Delano Roosevelt violated many Japanese American's Constitutional Rights by placing them in internment camps. On February 19, 1942 Roosevelt had signed Executive order 9066 which forcibly relocated Japanese Americans due to the fear of aiding the Japanese in World War II. There was no signs that showed that we had spies. There were only signs of discrimination all throughout the United States towards Japanese Americans. Though this sounded reasonable at the time, it was also new and gave little to no proof that Japanese Americans were aiding the enemy. Executive order 9066 was wrong due to the fact that it violated Japanese American's rights to forcibly be put in Internment Camps. Executive Order 9066 was an order granting the secretary of state(a.k.a secretary of defense) the power to designate military areas which "any or all persons may be excluded." This extensive power was used against the Jap

Morality and Prostitution

Prostitution usually surrounds with a lot of controversies and ethical issues because of many different reasons and the delicate issue it is to some people. In simple terms the act or practice into the engagement of sexual activities for a financial benefit is prostitution. Prostitution could be said to be the society's oldest profession ranging back to 1800s. Females usually engage in prostitution because of the nature of the job, however very seldom men also engage in prostitution. This essay plans to highlight why prostitution is favored or why prostitution is not morally wrong while the second part of the essay aims to highlight why prostitution is morally wrong. Finally the essay concludes with an ethical theory relating to prostitution learnt in the course and taking into account my personal view on prostitution. Firstly, one argument that justifies that prostitution is correct or is not morally wrong is that prostitution acts as a source of income and livelihood to many people n

Education and Human Development

Education is important nowadays because it gives us bigger impact in life. Without a well-prepared plan of our education, this country would not be developing. In my opinion, I agree because if we have no education, the country will not be well-developed and the citizens will be left behind. On top of that, education produces intelligent people with advanced knowledge and skills in a wide range of subjects. Moreover, education can gives us better job opportunity in the future. The education likewise can improve a country's socio-economic and political development. Therefore, I strongly agree that with education, the country will be well-developed and remain a successful country. One thing for sure is that education produces intelligent people with knowledge and skills of a certain subject which led to a better development of a country. Students will learn basic knowledge at school and college and they can learn on how to organize and be well-prepared of the oncomin

Gender and Intersectional Politics in Relation to Riots

The association between rioting, civil dissent and protest on the one hand, and intersectional and gender politics on the other, is something which has been noted in the literature (White, 2007). Where there is mass civil protest such as was seen in London in 2011 and Ferguson in 2014, questions of race, class, gender and other intersectional socio-political categories come to the fore. There is often an opposition between those who riot and those who oppose the rioters, between the establishment (represented by the government, the police) and those who protest against it. In London in 2011 thousands of people protested, rioted and engaged in criminal activity from Saturday the 6th August through to Thursday the 11th of August. The killing of Mark Duggan, a black man, on the 4th of August in Tottenham was seen as the trigger for these protests. Likewise in Ferguson, the fatal shooting of African American Michael Brown by a white police officer on the 9th of August last year was seen a

The Influence of Spain in America

Do you believe that America as we know it has been influenced by the Spanish in many ways? In the book Forging the American Character an essay written by Henry Wiencek called The Spain Among Us records many historical facts on the significance Spanish colonization has had on the Americas. America's identity is made up of many cultures put into one. Spanish colonization has had huge impact on the Americas in ways such as shaping the American character, contributing to American ranching practices, and by obtaining vital territory for its survival. The heart of the American character lies within the urge to discover the unknown and go to places that man has never seen before. As mentioned in the essay, "America was discovered by accident and explored to a considerable extent by people trying to find a way to somewhere else." (18) Francisco Vasquez de Coronado's exploration led to the first European sightings of the Grand Canyon. Even until this day it is evident that the act of seeking is embedded in the Ame

Causal Factors of the Reformation

The Renaissance was a period around the 14th and 15th century in which there was a great desire for knowledge and understanding, due to the influences of concepts such as humanism and individualism that lead to great advancements in a number of diverse areas. A main motivation for the movement is the concept of humanism, a belief that as humans, anything is possible. The Reformation is a 16th century upheaval that caused the Catholic Church to splinter, and Europe to be divided religiously, losing the religious unity in Europe. There are many causes of Reformation, such as the corruption of the Catholic Church, monarch's political motivations, and the Renaissance. However, I believe that the Renaissance played a major and vital role on the Reformation and without it, the Reformation would probably not be possible. The Renaissance is a period of time in which the European civilization had a great desire for knowledge and understanding. It was also a time of the revival of classical tex

African Americans: An At-Risk Population

African Americans are an "at-risk" population. Immigrants, who were forcibly taken from their families in Africa, brought to American, sold and used for manual labor on plantations. Slaves were stripped of their culture and given a new identity and way to live, being inferior to whites, as slaves. They endured horrific acts of abuse; racism against African-Americans was a justified way of life during the slave era. There is indisputable evidence that this population has had to face insurmountable challenges in order to survive and overcome the psychological and emotional scars embedded from years of torment. Systematic oppression of African Americans has become part of the everyday tapestry of the US society. Inequality within the educational system, housing market, and employ
